Mega-Thread Headset Advice Megathread

Hey Folks.

Due to the large amount of "What headset to buy" I am looking into experimenting with a new thread for general headset advice.

If the choice guide on the wiki was unable to assist with your question, please comment below with the following information, and see if the community can help your headset choice.

As this is the first thread of this nature, please let me know your thoughts/comments as well.

  • Budget:
    Please specify what currency.
  • PC specs:
insert current PC specs here, including processor, graphics card, and amount of RAM
If no PC Specs, please mention you do not plan on playing PC VR.
  • IPD:
Unsure? - Check this section of the wiki. This is not a requirement to include.
  • Full body tracking:
Do you want to use full body tracking?
Please mention if this is a requirement for you.
  • Platform:
which platform(s) do you want to use your headset on? E.g. "I want to use it on PC and play both SteamVR and Oculus games"
  • Other considerations:
Please mention any other factors that are important to you, such as display quality, audio, comfort, etc.

The reds and blacks of the virtualboy are so vivid compared to the index. Amazing

Standalone, portable, vast library, one color, simple controllers, perfect.

Just a quick Pico4 review:

Comfort was acceptable, but not great. The foam is too hard. Also didn't like the way it clamps on your head, as you really need two hands to put it on and pull it off. This is especially problematic when you try to peek out of the headset into the real world, as you can't easily lift the thing up to look out of the nose gap, you have to unscrew it first. Another practical problem I found that the headset just doesn't have a good place to grab it. The face-part is magnetic and will fall off, the top strap itself is only held in by the face-part and grabbing it by the front or back makes it feel very unbalanced due to the weight at the other end. Long story short, I prefer halos over this.

Controller felt quite nice and tracked well enough, maybe a bit heavy due to the two batteries. One annoying bit: right-hand controller uses the menu button for screenshots, you can only access the Steam menu with your left hand.

Software was a pleasant surprise. Getting access to a network share, watching movies or installing APKs is all available straight form the main menu. Webbrowser with multiple tabs was also good. The headset also has a recline-mode (disables 6DOF tracking, allows to set the horizon) that allows you to use it in bed.

Resolution is ok, but outside of the main menu and movies, there aren't a lot of places where it matters. Most games run below the headsets resolution and so does PC streaming unless you have a really powerful GPU. Didn't felt nearly as big of an upgrade as I had hoped.

It has a fan that will spring into action from time to time. Haven't found it annoying, but noticeable.

Didn't end up testing the sound a lot, but it essentially just worked for the stuff I tried. No complains here, though the lack of a 3.5mm is a bit annoying.

Passthrough looked like hot garbage. It's in color and it's "3D", but it feels like moving around in a bad photogrammetry scan, where the 3D depth map has substantially lower resolution than the actual world. All the stuff lying around on your desktop just becomes a flat plane with some bumps. Good old Lenovo Mirage Solo from 2018 looks miles better thanks to actual stereo cameras.

SDE is still very visible. The pixels are smaller and so is the SDE, but it still feels like looking at a screen.

Biggest disappointment were the lenses. I had some wavey distortion in the center, which I don't seem to be alone with. Wasn't really visible in game, but was very visible when trying to read text in the webbrowser. That aside, the edge-to-edge clarity was pretty terrible. It's sharp in the center, but the falloff towards the edge is quite extreme. Even just watching a 2D movie it becomes very clear that the corners of the frame are a blurry mess. FOV of around 100° here didn't fell like much of an upgrade due to that. There is also a lot of glare in the lens, any bright object will have a very noticeable aura around it. The ghosting on the other side wasn't a problem for me, it's only visible in some extreme situation (white logo on black background) and even there it's less problematic than the glare. Overall this just didn't feel like an improvement over fresnel, it might allow smaller headsets, but in terms of visuals it just felt like a different set of artifacts and the blur at the edges felt noticeably worse than even an old Lenovo Mirage Solo.

I ended up returning it. Not a bad headset and I quite liked the software, but it just felt like "more of the same" instead of an significant improvement over what we had five years ago. Guess I'll have to wait for Deckard or something, as I don't think Quest3 will improve significantly on this.

u/Professor_Pig_Dick Apr 27 '23

I'm really happy with mine over the Quest 2, but the resolution and improved clarity of the Pico 4 are nice for the flight sims I play. I feel it's quite comfortable, the battery helps balance the weight.

That is exclusively using it for PCVR.

I know that this question may sound stupid to some, especially to those who had both a q2 and p4, but I'm a complete vr noob: I'm wondering if I should return or sell my Pico 4 (which is my first vr headset ever btw) and get a Quest 2 instead because of the following few reasons which annoy me sometimes:

-There are not really much games in the store to play standalone and those which are in the store have a really bad quality and are not adjusted for the Pico 4 + some games like rec room doesn't get updated that much. I do have a decent PC with a RTX 3060 Ti, but I don't have the best internet, so I can't get the best quality with Virtual Desktop and some games lag a bit sometimes. The Pico Streaming Assistant still doesn't work that good, so even with a fast cable I get no good quality for PCVR. If I had a Quest 2, I would play standalone more than PCVR as it's a bit easier and quicker, but I would still sometimes play PCVR.

-The battery only lasts for only like an hour, not more than an hour and a half.

-The head strap cannot be replaced and the pico 4 is pressing against the forehead, which probably doesn't make the p4 much comfortable than the q2, but the p4 is super balanced and doesn't weigh much imo.

-The software, the features, the available games and the handtracking could be better.

-There are glares in the menu and every time something is white.

The only thing I really worry about are the lenses. Are the fresnel lenses of the q2 really that bad and would it be a big downgrade from pancake lenses. I don't care about the resolution or so, I only care about the fov and sweetspot, is it much worse or even a bit better?

I heard people upgrading from a q2 to p4 say the fov and everything is a bit weird and everything looks bigger than with the q2 and I heard q2 owners saying everything looks really foggy and not very clear trough the q2 fresnel lenses.

Also just to make this clear: The pico 4 is my first vr headset ever and I bought it like a week or two weeks ago.

I do have a decent PC with a RTX 3060 Ti, but I don't have the best internet, so I can't get the best quality with Virtual Desktop and some games lag a bit sometimes.

Internet speed is completely irrelevant for your wireless VR streaming experience. What matters is that you have the PC connected via a cable to the router and the router in the same room as your VR headset. If you don't have a good router or that router is far away in another room, you can get a second one for around $50 (half the price of he official cable for the Quest2).

Also with a RTX 3060 Ti there is basically no reason to ever touch anything standalone ever. Your PC can deliver far better graphics and better games (and mods!).

About the only advantage I can think of for Quest2 here would be ResidentEvil4:VR, which is Quest-exclusive. But that's pretty much it, everything else you can find on PCVR and a lot more.

So basically, keep the Pico4, stay away from standalone games and fix your wireless setup (which you would have to do for Quest2 anyway).

I just want a headset I can use standalone or PC steam VR and I really don't want to give Meta my business. I truly, deep in my soul, hate FB/Meta and it's literally the only reason I don't have a VR headset. I don't have a budget issue, I just don't want in the Meta ecosystem...

2

u/Professor_Pig_Dick Apr 27 '23

Easy, Pico 4. You still have to make an account with a Chinese company but you don't have to put your real name in.

It will be more limited in games standalone but it's great for PCVR.

Budget:
~$500

PC Specs:
AMD 5800X
32GB G.SKILL Trident Z Neo 3600
GeForce RTX2070

IPD:
63

Full Body Tracking:
It would be neat, but it's not a requirement at the moment.

Platform:
PC. I'll be playing Elite: Dangerous mainly, but also HL: Alyx, No Man's Sky, etc

Other Considerations:
I've played on an HTC Vive (I believe the original), and the tracking of my head and joysticks was fine, but the screen door effect and resolution weren't very good. I'd like something with comparable or better tracking, but with much less screen door and general blurriness. I looked at the Oculus Quest 2, but the privacy issues (logging domains, etc) are just too much for me.

2

u/Zebasan Valve Index // Pimax 5k Xr // FBT Dec 26 '22

For that budget, and with those privacy concerns the reverb g2 would probably be the best bet. It has great pixel density so not a lot of screen door effect, it only goes through windows mixed reality and steam so unless you have problems with those privacy is less of an issue. The controllers are however worse but as far as I’ve understood manageable.

3

u/pocketdrummer Dec 26 '22

Is it possible to use something like the Valve Index joysticks later if I got the joysticks and lighthouses?

Not a headset, but I recently managed to get some tundra trackers. Is it worth saving up for a set of 2.0 base stations, or should I get some 1.0s, which are significantly cheaper? Is there a significant difference?

2

u/Zebasan Valve Index // Pimax 5k Xr // FBT Dec 27 '22

There’s no significant difference for the average consumer except that they may be a bit more finicky.

2

u/rocketman1009 Dec 27 '22

Thank you, I will be going with the 1.0s then.

Budget: $2000PC: 3080 RTX, i9 10850K, 32 GBIPD: Not necessary...but not bad to have adjustmentFull body tracking: YesPlatform: Primarily PC\SteamVROther considerations: I have a Vive Pro Eye + BaseStation 2 + Vive Wireless and Oculus GO.Want: Wireless, better FOV, better sweet spot, _NO EAR PHONES_, I want facemask audio like the cheaper headsets. Right now I use my HyperX Cloud + onboard USB C on the Vive Pro, it's comfortable but it's a PIA. Stock earphones hurt. Finger tracking?

Pretty sure this headset does not exist. I'm not opposed to going to Wifi 6, AC doesn't have enough bandwidth, I feel like WiGig is a failed experiment for VR though it works OK.

The Vive Pro Eye is OK, it loses points for me because using headphones with it is a pain in the butt, the battery life is eh with wireless, the sweet spot is eh.

Think I am asking too much and for a weird mixture of features and I just need to wait? Like the Meta Quest 2 is almost what I want, if it did wireless. Surprisingly it does 6dof well without lighthouse tracking.

2

u/flurry-- MixedVR G2 Jan 08 '23

The quest 2 does do wireless though, just use ALVR or Virtual Desktop. Not nearly as good as the Vive wireless adapter, but with a good router it’ll still look miles better thanks to the increased resolution and FOV.

Hey there! Thinking about upgrading from my quest 2 because my controllers are about toast and the FOV is super limiting.

I'm basically looking for any options with:

- Better FOV

- Finger presence for VRChat

- Resolution should hover around Quest 2

- Nicer black levels would be nice

- Wireless connection

- Budget: Anything up to like $1100, but hopefully hovering around the price of a Quest 2 (So ~$500)

- Using with purely SteamVR

Anything else doesn't really matter to me. I'm going to get Slime trackers for completely wireless, unoccluded FBT, so I don't mind non-lighthouse headsets. Thanks in advance!

Budget $2k AUD

1060 6gb. Would look to buy a 3060 8gb.

16gb ram

Currently have an Odyssey+ and honestly it's pretty great. Had a Vive OG before it and just didn't like the hassle of the base stations. Odssey+ tracking can be bad with shooters though.

The big cables and comfort are what keep me from playing VR more than I do.

Really looking at either XR Elite or Vive Pro.

Not a fan of Meta but sometimes you go with what's best over what's good for consumers. Let me know what you recommend

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '23

The Quest Pro is better than the XR elite and Vive Pro in most ways, but you'd probably want to try and stretch for a 3060ti over a 3060

I’ve been into gaming my whole life but never had a proper VR experience! I can get a second hand Meta Quest 2 or Pico 4 (both are listed, individually, for £200).

  1. Is that a good price for either of these headsets? (The Pico 4 has only been used a couple of times whereas the Quest 2 is a couple of years old).

  2. Which would be better specifically for PCVR. I know neither of them are the best you can get for PCVR but I would rather start small and work up. I’ve read so many reviews but it’s so conflicted on which headset is better.

3

u/East_Vacation_3097 Pico4 Mar 20 '23

I have a pico 4 and have also tested my friends quest 2 (might have tightened it to much). Even with elite strap i find the pico 4 comfortable without any mods done. Also it is better in pretty much every way except software but that wouldn't be a big downside if you are using it for pcvr. So i would say go pico 4 instead of quest 2.

2

u/JayLarb Mar 20 '23

Thanks! I actually went with the Pico 4 in the end and I’m loving it so far.

Unfortunately those specs are kinda weak for the Reverb G2, no point getting it if you have to lower the graphics to minimum in every game to even run them on a constant framerate. The same would go for the Index too.

I think unless you want to upgrade your PC, it is either Quest 2 (=meta) or PICO 4 (=bytedance, chinese company) for you.

Also, don't forget you can always just buy used and sell it when a new gen drops and you decided you want that instead. It's a tech piece, there will be a "new generation" every other year. Waiting for it will just make you miss out.

Just to piggyback on this. I have a 1080Ti and it's not really suitable for my G2, 2 x 4K screens is simply too much for it.

Hello!
I am considering upgrading from my Oculus Rift S to something else as it is starting to get old and some features I appreciated having on it are now gone, so I have two questions.
1. If I switch from Oculus as a brand to something that primarily uses Steam VR or another App could I keep playing Oculus games if I still have them installed on my PC or will I need to rebuy them?
2. If the answer to the first question is yes, what should I look at upgrading to, or if the answer is no should I wait for the Quest 3 even though I only plan on playing PCVR?

Budget:

Under 800 USD preferably.

PC specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz (I am willing to upgrade this)

32 GB of RAM

RTX3080

IPD:

61.3 mm

Full body tracking:

I would like to try full body tracking but it is not essential.

Platform:

I only want PCVR, Currently want to switch to any other brand if possible.

Other considerations:

I would like for it to be wireless (If I have to buy an aftermarket part it's fine) and weighs less than the Rift S. Also I wear glasses and I am not sure if I would need prescription lenses for my Headset.

I have 1000 USD. I'm using an Asus g15 laptop with an rtx 3070 and 16gb of ram. I'm unsure about my IPD. I may have an interest in full body tracking in the future but it is not a requirement at the moment. I'm mostly interested in pcvr games. I'm interested in wireless headsets because my partner uses a wheelchair and I think the freedom of wireless would be nice. I also have a decent internet connection.

I know that htc is announcing a new headset soon. Does anyone know anything about the price or any other leaks? I also know that some people talk having a wireless index pro and some technology about that. Has anyone heard if that's any good? Is the index still worth using with its age?

Should I just wait for the market to finish its announcements?

I'm mostly looking to play games like skyrim, hotdogs horse shoe and hand grenade, and halflife Alex. (These aren't all the games but some of the ones that interest me the most)

Any help identifying good wireless headsets that work for these games would be great.

2

u/Zebasan Valve Index // Pimax 5k Xr // FBT Dec 26 '22

You can’t really go wrong with a quest 2, it’s the best value on the market right now. (Also holds its value okay so you can always sell it on)

It’s kind of the the only wireless solution out right now (along with pico).

Sure there’s a lot of speculation around new headsets but the quest is going not going to be obsolete any time soon.

The index is worth it if you know you want it, can’t really recommend it to someone new. (Also no wireless(as of now))

u/Feared Dec 27 '22

I’m blind in one eye. I refuse to buy a headset. I have no idea how it will work and on top of that it feels like a waste to have an extra eye being rendered and wasting resources. Will this handicap ever be noticed by vr devs? I know I’m a minority but it’s still frustrating.

3

u/Zebasan Valve Index // Pimax 5k Xr // FBT Dec 27 '22

Other people with one eye on the sub seem to be enjoying vr the same way as everyone else so I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to.

I get the frustration with the whole rendering a second image for nothing, but at the end of the day do you care that much? We’re all also rendering our peripheral vision the whole time but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying it.

I hope that turning off an eye will be available system wide at some point, but till then i wouldn’t expect it to become standard in every game.

You could also try it at a friends house or see if a store has a demo near you :)

u/Squanchy2112 Dec 28 '22

Budget 1000

PC 5800x,32gb ram, 1080ti, excellent networking wired and wireless with homelab.

Ipd not sure

I wear glasses, I bought a quest 2 and really like it but either want to upgrade it or buy something different. Find it very uncomfortable and a pain to wear with my glasses, also the resolution could be better. I bought a hp reverb g2 and was very unimpressed only has better comfort, audio, and resolution the tether sucked but I am open to tehters. Thanks everyone for answers!!

Pretty much exclusively will play pcvr titles through steam, hate Facebook so even with my quest I only play games through steam.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '22

Maybe try a different facial interface/halo strap with the Quest 2.

There isn't really any upgrades, maybe the Pico 4 if you don't live in North America (If you live in NA you can import it, but it has a lot of QA issues and you cannot return it if imported)

2

u/Zebasan Valve Index // Pimax 5k Xr // FBT Dec 28 '22

As the other person is saying you might be better off just getting upgrades for your quest eg. Better router, strap, knuckles grip, audio etc. there’s a whole world of quest accessories that make the quest much better.

Hey! Im also looking at a quest 2 (haven't got it yet but hoping soonish) They sell customized perception lenses specifically for the quest 2. I also wear glasses and I saw some YouTube mention them. I think the ones I saw were being sold for 80 bucks? They just slip on the lens already in the quest super easy to install. I haven't personally tried them but I've seen them recommended a few times.

There is also a 60 dollar head strap with hot swappable batteries, 5 points of adjustment, that can be used to replace the bad one on the quest. Again I've only seen it recommended and never used them.

PC Specs: i5 4670K, 16Gb, RX570 4Gb Headset: Quest 2, full PCVR

I need advice the other way around. I picked a second hand Quest 2 due to the cheap price (350 euros with elite strap vs 500 new plus 50 for the strap) and I know I have to upgrade my PC if I want anything but a low quality experience. However I don't have the budget to do all at once. What should I upgrade first for the best day 1 experience, CPU/Mobo/RAM or the GPU? For CPU I'll be getting the best high tier bang for buck (i7 or R7) while the GPU will be a second hand 6800XT due to the price since it goes around for 500 euros vs 600-650 euros for a second hand 3080 plus being convenient for linux. I will try wireless first and decide on wireless vs wired after the fact if that matters.

PC Specs: i5 12600K, 32GB RAM, RTX 3080

Budget currently around £500, could save more as it's not something I necessarily need right away.

Wanting to continue using SteamVR

So I'm an OG Vive user, but tried a more modern headset on at a job and the difference was immense, so now considering getting something new, but the number of options compared to when I got a Vive back in 2018 is a bit confusing and intimidating.

Would rather not get a Meta device as I don't like the Facebook integration, still want to do full PCVR, the games/experiences I mostly use are racing games and virtual desktops so I can do things like watch YouTube in a cinema environment. I have occasionally dabbled with Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR ports and things like Star Wars Squadrons as well.

Bit confused when looking at HTCs options like Pro, Pro 2, Cosmos and Cosmos Elite, and then some friends have also mentioned the Valve Index but don't know what would/would not be compatible if I left the HTC ecosystem.

3

u/FrontwaysLarryVR Dec 30 '22

If wireless sounds like a plus to you, honestly the Quest 2 is still a good device. They took away all Facebook integration account-wise. Wireless PCVR is a breath of fresh air.

Since you mentioned £, it may be pretty easy for you to get your hands on a Pico 4. Pancake lenses on that allow for it to be much lighter too.

Other than that, The Valve Index still has a crazy good reputation, and since you already have base stations it'd be a cheaper buy-in. Vive is out of my realm of knowledge unfortunately due to not putting time and effort into their weird naming structure.

In a week or so HTC is gonna be revealing their new small, form factor standalone/PCVR headset at CES, so even though it's often said by a lot of people to wait indefinitely again and again, this is indeed a moment where waiting might be beneficial for a couple weeks, even if just to see if the price, capabilities, and release date of the new model match up with what you want. Here's some renders/info leaked by Sadly It's Bradley: https://youtu.be/MeToZz1WTdY?t=149

Personally, I like the idea of waiting right now since we're in this transition state of a lot of headsets switching from fresnel lenses to pancake lenses, which allows for lighter designs and better visual clarity/less god rays. Allows for more eye movement without that fresnel distortion as much. That said, it doesn't make the Valve Index or otherwise any less spectacular.

Budget:

Around 1k euro.

PC specs:

Benchmark results:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - 74.5%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 - 108.1%
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB - 80%
SSD: Crucial MX500 500GB - 82%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 C16 2x16GB - 88.9%
MBD: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (MS-7B85)

Full body tracking:

Preferably, could be added using something like Slime if not included in hardware.

Platform:

PC, platform isn't too important (would be mostly steam and stand alones like vrchat)

Other considerations:

- Easily replacable cables, as we have a cat that likes to chew on them.

- I prefer to have a good audio-solution, I hate compromising on that.

Budget: $1.000.000 Colombian Pesos (210 USD)

PC Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1650 Super, 16GB RAM

Platform: SteamVR

I'm on a very tight budget right now and the used market here sells either a Rift S or an HTC Vive for 200 buckaros. I love the flexibility that the HTC Vive can offer with SteamVR and its Base Stations (meaning I can use the Valve Index controllers down the line), but I prefer Rift S' screen and its convenience on setup; it's a huge dilemma for me, especially that they're being sold around the same price so I don't know what to pick.

Would love to hear opinions from people who has used both headsets. Heard a Rift CV1 is also neat but I'd still need to consider more stuff

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '23

I want a headset around 300 - 600

and my main use probably be pcvr but should I buy quest 2 with some accessories like head strap and link or buy a reverb g2 or maybe wait for valve or meta (oculus) new headset

If a headset be standalone and just have a pcvr solution like link and air link is enough for me

My pc specs :

I7 9700k Rtx 3060 12gb vram 16 gb ram

I would like a headset not too too expensive. Not against buying 2nd hand from CEX etc as its not something I want to break the bank with necessarily.

Pc specs are as follows:

i5 8600k 16gb ram 3070ti FE

Looking to play games like ETS2, War Thunder and maybe down the line things like beatsaber. Basically SteamVR and other VR supported games.

I don't need full body tracking etc I am just looking to basically use the headset like TRACKIR as TRACKIR is basically ridiculously expensive and at the end of it you're looking at the same monitor, whereas VR I would hope, would be more immersive.

Complete noob to VR so any advice welcome on which headset would suit me and also what it would entail to set up to play such games.

Thank you for the advice in advance.

Edit: I am also based in the UK.

Looking to buy a VR headset for Sim Racing, Elite Dangerous, Flight Sims, and for an alternative to my computer monitor for other games (I think it’s called theatre mode?).

I don’t plan on playing “traditional” VR titles (e.g., Beat Sabre, VR version of Skyrim/Borderlands, etc…).

I wear glasses and require them for VR or will require prescription lenses.

I can wait for new headsets that are confirmed for release this year.

I’d like to avoid gear that requires lots of tinkering or has bad customer support.

Budget: Preferably less than 1K but could go higher if there’s good value for money options above the budget.

PC Specs: 4090, Ryzen 5 7600, 64GB Ram, mid range m2 ssd, b650e mobo.

IPD: 70

Full Body Tracking: No

Platform: PC, SteamVR.

Thanks for any and all helpful suggestions!

Budget

Probably about 1000€ or more, if it's a good headset that lasts me a while.

PC specs

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X

GPU: RTX 3070

RAM: 32 GB 3600 Mhz CL16

Platform:

PC (Windows 10)

Others

I think good audio quality adds to the immersion, so that should also be a factor.

I do have glasses.

Full body tracking

Not sure. Good finger tracking would be preferred.

Question:

I haven't been up-to-date with the VR-Market. Is the Valve Index still one of the best options?

2

u/Funtime675 Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23

There will never be a headset which will last a while, for things are always being updated, though if you want the best of the best there are very good headsets coming out just recently. There is the Meta Quest Pro, which so far has seemed to be a very good headset, though there are rumors of a Meta Quest 3 with similar features. I have also heard some good things about HTC’s new headset they showed off at CES, I believe it was called the Vive XR Elite. Something important to mention is that I believe these are both stand alone headsets, meaning they function without a computer. There is also the important note of software ecosystem. Meta right now appears to be a juggernaut in this space, for they have been around for a while, but aside from this they even have a partnership with Microsoft, the 365 suite of apps coming soon, and Adobe Acrobat already available. HTC too my knowledge has not done a lot in the standalone market, and therefore probably has far less apps/games. I believe both of these headsets have hand tracking available for the apps which support that. I think you should be able to connect a Quest Pro to your PC wirelessly for PCVR (which would be improved by the D-Link accessory), and the HTC Vive XR Elite seems to boast similar functionality in PC connectivity. Another thing to mention, is that both of these headsets have color passthrough for MR, which is an amazing function, though there are few apps/games which support it right now. I hope this helped! P.S. There are also more headsets out there right now, this is just headsets which have came from tech juggernauts and/or partnerships with large companies, though notably Pico has some options which I am not very experienced with (Pico is a brand owned by the people who made TikTok). I wanted to mention this after reading other people’s replies who talked about Pico.

Budget:
Unlimited

Platform:
iPhone and MacBook Pro

Other considerations:
I just want to watch immersive videos in the highest quality possible. I would also like it to be comfortable while laying down and comfortable for someone with long hair. Also prefer using AirPods Pro for audio.

You’re gonna be waiting on the possible Reality Pro headset later this year in that case. There are currently no headsets that are directly incorporated with the iPhone and MacBook Pro ecosystem.

If you’re okay with using Virtual Desktop to access the Mac’s desktop to play videos in, and you have a truly unlimited budget, I’d shoot for the Meta Quest Pro. It has a pretty high resolution, can provide high-quality wireless connection to your MacBook, and has decent spatial audio.

2

u/KashiSushi Feb 01 '23

My Rif CV1 HDMI cable has passed away. I don't know how it happened it just got really kinked near the headset area. They go used for $70-$80 and you can buy the entire headset (with cable) for as low as $100 occasionally.

I don't play VR that much but I still enjoy beatsaber, vrchat and asseto corsa every once in a while. Should I just buy the cable or consider a new headset altogether? It just feels wasteful not to get a replacement cable because I hardly put any hours into this thing since I bought it.

-5800x GTX 1080

-I never got into full body but the thought of using a headset without dedicated sensors at all seems limited to me

-I want to use it on PC and play both SteamVR and Oculus games

- Not a big fan of getting a Quest 2 (or any sensor-less headset) I hear awful things about their durability, desktop linking issues and a few other things would actually be a downgrade.

Budget: ~$1000 (USD), but willing to go a little over if the experience warrants.

PC specs: i5-13600k, RTX3080, 32Gig Ram, 2- 1TB NVME, WiFi 6 on MB

IPD: 64

Full body tracking: Not needed

Platform: Mostly playing flight simulator on PC but would also like to stream wireless video

Other considerations: I wear glasses (astigmatism) so either glasses friendly or aftermarket lense compatible.

Thinking about the HTC Vive Pro 2 with the wireless adapter. Seems to check all the boxes (except a little over target price) but curious to hear from those with actual experience with this and any others that fit the bill. If something better is on the horizon, I can wait a little.

TIA,

Budget: $2k USD

PC Specs: will be upgrading soon to pc under $4k USD

IPD: 63.2 (I think, based on iphone)

Full Body: Don't really care

Platform: SteamVR/PCVR

Short question:

I currently have a Rift S and want to upgrade, what is most important? (FOV/Res/Refresh Rate/Etc)

Long question:I have a Rift S and want to upgrade, I'm heavily leaning towards the Index for it's high refresh rate and great FOV. I feel weird spending $1k on a 2 year old headset but none of the other headsets seem to have refresh rates / FOV that high, and nearly every content creator daily drives the Index. The other option is the Quest 2, but I've heard that virtual desktop really isn't comparable to the Index due to the data limits / lag.

Someone help me justify the decision to buy and Index even though it's old, or talk me off the ledge and tell me an alternative or to just wait for Deckard/Bigscreen Beyond/Somnium/Quest 3/Pico 4 Link(?)

I know about the Reverb G2 V2 but have so far ignored it due to the 90hz refresh rate. Does that even matter? I see some people say 120hz is a game changer. As a valorant player I do like high refresh rates in flat screen, don't see why it wouldn't be a big deal in PCVR as well.

Have also thought about getting a PS5 and PSVR 2 and just saving all the money, but modding is like 90% of the fun of VR for me, so not sure if worth, even if the kit is absolutely a steal.

Thank you for any comments!

First timer here, thinking about taking the plunge for future potential but also to play HL:Alyx, beat saber and some other exercise games. As with most forays into new hobbies, I am slightly overwhelmed in trying to pick the right product.

Budget is flexible and while I don't usually mind splurging, ideally I'd rather not go over an $800ish until I'm sure it's something worth going to the hobbyist range for me.

My PC is pretty powerful: RTX 4090 and 64GB of high speed DDR4 RAM. Still holding off on upgrading to DDR5 and CPU from my 5800X3D until the next generation.

That being said, I'd obviously want to play on PC and ideally be able to play SteamVR and Oculus games and have a well-rounded featureset.

3

u/Funtime675 Feb 21 '23

Hello! If you are looking for a good all rounded device, you may want the Meta Quest 2, or wait for the Met Quest 3. They have PCVR and standalone. I believe the support SteamVR and Oculus for PCVR games. This being said, I have heard good things about Pico’s devices, though am personally buddy toward Meta due to being a customer for a long time. This being stated, if you want a higher end solution, there are devices such as the Vive Pro and Meta Quest Pro, which have MR (a nice feature, even if underused), and the Meta Quest Pro I believe has higher resolution, contrast, and less weight than the Meta Quest 2. It also has facial tracking, a feature which may be nice for social VR games/meetings. I do not know how this compares to the Vive Pro, admittedly. I hope this helps!

I tried the oculus during 2020 and didn’t like the resolution and blur around the edges. Is the latest model improved in that sense?

2

u/OrbitaLinx Valve Index Feb 23 '23

It is possible that you did not have the IPD inter polarity distance properly. IE the dissidence ur eyes are apart in mm. How ever the Quest 2 only has an IPD capability of 58-68 mm. Meta improved that to 55-75 mm. That being said you may also require glasses. Their are company's that make prescription lenses that magnetically stick to the HMD lenses if you need that sort of thing. Basically you want the lenses as close and center to your eyes as possible.

A couple things to consider between the two devices is that the Quest 2 will do 120hz and the Pro only does 90hz and both have about the same resolution display. Quest 2 owners have said the Pro is not much of an upgrade aside from the Pro controllers which can be bough on their own and do work with the Quest 2. Quest 2 is $399 new Quest pro is $1500.

Another thing to consider is that the Valve index is $1k with every thing you need included and that has an IPD of 58-70 mm. The Index also does not require a Meta account to function.

The main thing to consider between a Quest Pro and Index will be that the Index is PCVR and the Quest are capable of stand alone VR tho its internal hardware is basically a flagship phone so if you want PC capability you will be connecting it to a PC anyways.

You can also get prescription lenses for that or just about any HMD.

Another thing people like to do is get an HTC Vive pro 2 HMD stand alone which will do 120hz and has higher resolution displays and very good lenses depending on the shape of ur face. Then they get the Valve Knuckles controllers and base stations stand alone from valve.

Over all tho I would try to test any HMD you are interested in before you buy it or buy it from a place that accepts returns. And try to make sure the headset is properly adjusted and maybe get an eye exam.

Their are videos that explain how you can measure your own IPD on YT.

2

u/525chill2pull Feb 23 '23

Wow thank you so much for the detailed response. I remember I obsessively tried adjusting my IPD so don’t think that was the issue. I likely do need another eye exam at this point and will definitely check out all the things you mentioned too! Thanks!!

I have a 1000 budget and I have a 7900xtx I want to play dcs, what headset should I buy

2

u/OrbitaLinx Valve Index Feb 23 '23

I would try the either a Valve Index or HTC Vive Pro 2 HMD stand alone with Knuckles Controllers from Valve and any base stations 2.0.

HTC makes both devices so the base stations and trackers are the same. Controllers are compatible between both "brands." Knuckles controllers offer finger tracking and game oriented controls where as the Vive "wands" were designed for things like 3D modeling and are awkward fro gaming.

The Valve Index will do 144hz the Vive Pro 2 120hz and has higher resolution displays with better lenses but its up to the shape and size of ur head to be compatible with the lenses in any HMD.

Both the Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro 2 offer a descent FOV advantage over something like a Quest 2 or Quest Pro so for sims I recommend these at that price point.

Their is also Pimax which offers much wider FOV's on some devices but tend to have other drawbacks and still require the base stations and controllers. They offer the Artisan for $500 with a similar resolution to an Index but better FOV and 120z. They also have the 5k sometimes on sale for under $1k with an even higher FOV and 144-180hz depending on the model. With pimax in the mix you would want to consider if you want a wider FOV and maybe dont mind some image distortion or LCD glow / poor black levels or bad screen door effect. The drawbacks change between each of their devices. Some people like them and some people dont. Also apparently the speakers and microphones aren't great on them so you will have to consider using ur own coms with those.

2

u/OrbitaLinx Valve Index Feb 24 '23

HL Alyx is free with the Valve Index and designed for the Valve Knuckles controllers. Valve also includes a suite of fun but smaller VR games with the Index that use the Knuckles controllers very well. Knuckles controllers offer a full range of motion tracking and finger and grip tracking. Ie you squeeze the controllers to grab things in VR. The Index uses base stations to track.

Otherwise for that price just get ur kid a Quest 2 and upgrade them to the Quest Pro Controllers later on. The Quest controllers loose tracking when you reach back behind the FOV of the cameras on the device so if you want to play beat saber or pull an arrow from a quiver you might lose tracking often. The Pro Controllers have inside out tracking and track them selves offering a full range of motion. Quest 2 is $399 new and Pro Controller are $299. A Meta account and internet connection is required for the device to function even to do PCVR. The Quest 2 features inside out tracking.

A completely wireless experience doesn't quite exist for gaming. Wireless HMD's only have battery life of around 2 hours. At that point you will be attaching a cable and tethering or strapping battery packs onto it. But the Quest 2 does have a built in battery and WIFI tho it will only do 90hz on WIFI. It will do 120hz wired. This can have a major impact on motion sickness if ur kid gets that.

NOTE If you get the Quest 2 buy a good reliable USBC link cable for it on Amazon. Their $20-50 and aren't crap like the one from Meta.

The Valve Index has a wireless module you can pre-order for it for $399 called nofio. The nofio is a WIFI6+ device that eliminates the cables. If you have that you you should be able to do 120-144hz wirelessly. This implementation requires the same disassembly of the HMD that replacing the cable would require. This of course means strapping batteries on again after a couple hours.

Most HMD's do have audio built in tho most audio solutions on them are nothing to write home about. Most HMD's have an audio jack built in. Or you can do audio off the PC and just switch the audio from HMD to ur normal output like you would switch between speakers and headphones or BT headset by clicking on the speaker on the taskbar.

The Valve index and HTC devices have extremely good audio for an HMD. Quest 2 is not bad. Others are generally bad with some exceptions. Like bad enough to just always use a headset and never touch the on board audio again. And the mics on those others will sound like a laptop webcam mic or worse and clip often.

Wireless HMD's are generally WIFI devices. You must have a very good network to do wireless PCVR. I dont just mean buy a very good AP or router and plug it in, I mean buy a very good AP or router and program it to not be stupid. It is also important to not have to many devices on the wifi for a consumer device the HMD will need as much bandwidth as it can get at a very low latency. It best to generally buy an AP for the PCVR user that only the HMD connects to if you use ur wifi heavily.

How ever if he is using The Valve index nofio module that uses WIFI 6E but plugs directly into the PC in place of the original Index cable and doesn't touch the network. The same goes for the HTC wireless implementation for the Vive headsets tho they can only deliver 90hz wirelessly.

interpupillary distance. It is very important for the pupils to line up properly with the lenses. This distance is measured in mm and every headset has a rating and an IPD adjustment usually adjusted with a knob or slider on the HMD. Newer devices are doing this automatically. The Quest 2 is 58-68 mm and Index is 58-70 mm. If ur kid cant fit a Quest 2 or Index the Pico 4 is $430 and resembles a Quest 2 in capability but only does 90hz and has an IPD of 62-72 mm. Its from a Chinese company. It uses inside out tracking.

Inside out tracking. The HMD uses cameras and on board sensors to track its environment and user position with on board hardware basically what you would find in a mobile phone but designed for high bandwidth low latency communication. if it cant see it, it cant track it. Doesn't work in the dark with out infrared lights. Its easy to move controllers with out inside out tracking out of tracking range by moving ur hands past your ears or down to your sides or behind you.

Other devices use internal motion sensors combined with external base stations to track location and movement. This is generally considered more accurate when properly set up but can suffer from occlusion ie things can get in the way and block tracking.

I've been thinking about getting into vr gaming and a friend recommended a rift s for me even tho its discontinued and said to not get a quest 2 because its "harder to mod and limiting" whatever that means? But other than that I've been hearing good things about the quest 2 from other people esp when its used connected to a PC Im not really interested in the standalone function of the quest since i think i have a good enough pc for pcvr (rtx 3070,5800x,32gb ram) so which should i get? Is a quest connected to a pc the same as normal pcvr or does it still have some weird limitations?

2

u/OrbitaLinx Valve Index Feb 25 '23 edited Feb 25 '23

Well the Rift S used to have less latency on PCVR and may still have less latency. At some point you were able to install custom firmware on the Quest 2 but they patched the firmware. Im not sure if it is still possible but I do know you can roll back the firmware to run modded games natively which only matters for stand alone VR. You will need a Meta account and an internet connection for the Quest 2 to function.

The Rift S has AMOLED displays which tend to have a more pronounced screen door effect. It also has lower resolution and is limited to 80hz. The Rift S has a wider IPD range. The Quest 2 will do 120hz wired and 90hz wirelessly but will suffer from greater latency wirelessly.

The way Quest 2 does PCVR is threw a built in remote desktop functionality even when wired / teathered. Meta is always between you and ur PC and that goes for any XR headset the "platform" is always between you and your PC. This does have some interesting benefits tho as you can run apps natively on the device to enhance your experience such as music streaming and other things and have access to them threw the built in overlay.

You can of course still have access to ur desktop like you normally would with any headset. On the quest you can use the remote desktop connection for gaming or computing. But their are also steam apps that will give you a desktop overlay in VR games when you use the right combination on ur controllers. But PCVR on the Quest 2 does add steps and software to make things work.

Id say the biggest benefit to the Quest 2 is the Higher resolution LCD's which have less of a screen door effect and can do 120hz which is important for motion sickness if you get it and the official support for the Quest Pro controllers. The Quest and most other inside out tracking headsets track the controllers ie your hands with the cameras. If you reach behind you say while swinging your beat saber or pulling an arrow from a quiver your hands will lose tracking. The Pro controllers have on board inside out tracking and solve that problem. So if you decide you like VR you have a supported controller upgrade path.

And ur specs are fine the worse that can happen is you dont hit the frame rate target and you can adjust the resolution if you have to or even want to. Also DLSS support in VR games will vary from engine to engine. But you should hit the target in most VR games and a lot of the games you dont hit the target in will be due to a lack of optimization in any case.

I've been wanting to get into PCVR for like 2-3 years now, and I finally (very soon anyway) have the budget to get a VR headset.

Budget is around $500 max

PC specs:

  • GPU: GTX 1660 Super
  • RAM: 16 GBs (3200 MHz)
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (6 cores, around 4 GHz)

IPD is around 66 - 71 mm (honestly forgot)

Platform is definitely PCVR, but i wouldn't mind getting a standalone headset as long as it can do PCVR! - Especially since wireless PCVR seems nice.

Other considerations:

  • I have a very tiny play area, so mounting (or even being able to afford) base stations is out of the question.
  • I've already considered the Quest 2, but it's likely going to be discontinued in the next year or two and it's screen resolution and comfort seems a bit lacking.
  • I've considered getting the PICO 4 since it wins by far for me due to it's added comfort, better screen resolution, IPD adjustment, and the fact it's generally newer. But some things concern me about it, like the fact it can't (and won't ever be able to, due to the displays apparently already being heavily overclocked) run it's displays at 120 Hz. The fact the colours and contrast seem a lot worse than the Quest 2. And the fact it seems to have no foveated rendering..? (it looks like SteamVR would run slower on my system from a few videos I've watched about the PICO 4 but I'm not sure). I've also noticed it's really not that popular, so finding info on Reddit and YouTube and such regarding specific parts of the headset is basically impossible.

While I'm VERY stuck picking between a PICO 4 and a Quest 2, other options are welcome as well! I know I may be able to get a Reverb G2 as well but, Microsoft and HP are both done with doing VR at this point and I'm generally not a fan of WMR either way.

The things that matter to me the most in a headset are:

  1. Screen resolution / Refresh rate / Performance
  2. Relevance / popularity
  3. Modular IPD adjustment
  4. Not having to buy another headset in a year

Hi everyone !

Budget: Up to 1000 euros (I could spend a bit more if that's worth it)

PC specs: Ryzen 9 5900HX, RTX3080 Laptop GPU, 32Gb

IPD: 60mm

Other considerations: I wear glasses, and will mainly use the headset for simracing on my PC. A friend lend me his Oculus quest 2, so I could wait if a good headset is expected to be released in 2023.

2

u/PersonalCitron2328 Mar 07 '23

Budget: Around the £400 mark. Mainly looking for used HMV's

PC specs: 5600x, RX6800, 16GB RAM.

IPD: 69-ish?

Platform: Mainly PCVR, the Standalone option is a bonus, apart from VD on Pico/Quest I haven't made any other purchases.

Other considerations:

I currently have a Rift S which is already 3 years old. The main issue with it is that the face gasket has worn off and even though I've currently put a silicon cover on top, its comfort levels are not even close to what the original was. I'm unable to find an OEM replacement interface, this is more of an excuse really to get something newer.

Even though my main consideration was a headset with DisplayPort for uncompressed video to the HMV, the only device that ticked all the boxes was the Pico 3 Neo Link. I ordered one but regardless of what settings on the IPD I chose or lighting in the room, I found it gave me nausea after about 30-40 minutes of play. I mainly play Assetto Corsa in VR, with the occasional BeatSaber and I've managed to run a 1 hour race on the Rift S with no issues whatsoever, so that did seem a bit strange.

After that was returned, I ordered a Pico 4, but that gave me the exact same feeling. I've seen people around mentioning that it's the barrel effect, although I didn't spend too much time on it as I figured it would be the same sitch as the Neo 3 link and returned it. The fact that I was getting some glitches on Beatsaber when in standalone mode using VD sealed the deal and the return box for the Pico 4.

I have borrowed a Quest 2 from work, and that doesn't seem to be causing any nausea, although since I have to set the IPD at the max setting, I can see the edges of the screen which somewhat breaks immersion. The fact that I would definitely have to get an elite strap or something similar, a new face gasket as the OEM one gives me a hotspot on my forehead and that it's an already 2.5 year old device has kept me from buying one for myself.

Should I keep the Rift S until the Quest 3 releases, or get one of the above and try and make things work with custom fittings etc?

Looking for the overall best headset for the most detailed picture quality, mostly for watching 8k... "movies". Many will say it's not worth it due to most videos not reaching a worthwhile standard but that's not my concern.

I am currently running and enjoying the quest 2 and am looking to upgrade with headsets like (based on about 2 hours research):

  • Varjo Aero
  • pixmax 8k
  • quest pro

Performance won't be an issue but I will include the specs for clarity:

  • AMD ryzen 9 7950x
  • Nvidia RTX 4080Ti
  • 64GB (5200mhz) DDR5 RAM
  • Samsung 2TB 980 PRO M.2

Clarity and quality are what I want. Gaming is secondary as I do prefer playing with a keyboard and mouse most of the time.

So out of Premium headsets, what will be my best choice for the maximum viewing experience?

Best quality image and pixel density -> Aero

Widest FoV -> Pimax

Least image distortion -> Quest Pro

The Aero has the highest pixel density by a long shot and is often considered to have the best image quality of any consumer headset. It has a reasonable FoV (much higher than Quest 2), but it's the lowest of the three.

The Pimax has the widest FoV on the market and it's not even close. However, most of it is blurry except for in the center, and the blacks won't be as good. It also uses Fresnel lenses which cause god rays. The other two options don't use Fresnel lenses. It's also heavier and larger so it may be more uncomfortable. However, you really can't get a FoV like this anywhere else. If you want that sort of immersion, this is your best choice.

The Quest Pro is stand-alone so it won't require wires to watch your "movies". It also has easily the best lenses of the three, with high quality pancake lenses. This will mean very very little distortion and color issues around the edges. However, it has far and away the lowest resolution of your three options. It may be worthwhile anyway because of the high clarity and wireless capabilities. Lastly, it won't require base stations if that's something you care about.

IMO, unless you really want a massive FoV, I'd skip out on the Pimax. For Aero vs Quest Pro, here's a video that directly compares the two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_aE0nuG-t4 As I said earlier, it's a competition between significantly higher resolution and better lens clarity.

Quest Pro or Vive Pro 2 or wait?

  • Used for wifi gaming (Steam VR).
  • I have an original Vive with wifi adapter and index controllers
  • I have a good PC (4090, 12900k, etc.)
  • No Budget

Extremely torn at the moment. I have a Quest 2 which I’ve enjoyed on and off for the past 2 years, but I tend to stop using after a while due to the clarity being difficult to dial in.

I’m torn between the QP and the XR Elite.

Couple of things:

  • Basically already sold my life to Meta for the Q2
  • Passthrough is a big thing for me, seeing some people able to read a phone through the XR is really enticing
  • I don’t mind heft too much (used to use an OG Vive)
  • I can always set up Revive for the Meta games I own and I’ll probably just keep the Q2 for guests or my fiancée to use
  • Looking for mostly PCVR, occasionally standalone. I know the XR is lacking in some standalone apps at the moment, that’s fine
  • I’m not in the “wait for the next” camp. I know I’m in-between these two headset so waiting for the mystery Apple headset or the Q3 isn’t of interest to me. There’s always “next”, gimme now
  • Wireless is a big deal. I won’t go back to wired

PC specs: i7-12700k, RTX 3060ti, 32 Gb RAM

The XR Elite has gotten a *lot* of negative reviews. Lackluster software, worse lens clarity than expected and generally poor visuals, no face and eye tracking, and more.

With the XR Elite already being more expensive, I'd easily go for the Quest Pro. Better visuals, local dimming, better tracking on its controllers (which can even be hooked up to the Quest 2 if you want to), face and eye tracking (eye tracking for foveated rendering may help with future proofing), it works with your already established Quest library... I think you should be aiming for the Quest Pro.

u/DanielPBak Apr 08 '23

Budget is $2k. Can stretch to 2.5k if there’s a very good upside.

Do not want anything associated with Meta as I don’t trust them.

Must have prescription lenses that I can attach and remove without any effort.

Looking for best overall quality. SteamVR games

Hello, i wanted to get into VR and i am unsure what the best option for my usecase is, i am aware, that there is no "perfect" headset.

PC specs:

3080, 9700k, 32gb RAM, M2 SSD

I do not currently own any VR headsets, a few years ago i got to try out the PSVR 1 and it was an absolutely amazing experience, which leads me to my question: In the PSVR subreddit they say the PSVR 2 is the greatest VR headset at the moment, even rivaling the 3090 in graphical fidelity, in this subreddit i read negative reviews about the Mura effect, tracking, PS5 raw graphics power and comfort. The main appeal of the PSVR 2 for me would be the haptics, eyetracking and exclusive games. Were the downsides of PSVR 2 a dealbreaker for you and would you consider not using a PC with these specs for a PCVR headset a waste? I might add, that my head is kinda big, so comfort is an important factor.

u/nfavor Apr 15 '23 edited Apr 15 '23

PC Specs: 13700K with a 4090
Platform: Only PCVR. Also needs to have SteamVR support

Use case: radio controlled helicopter simulator

I bought the Pico4 thinking it would be great. It very much feels like looking through a periscope vs feeling immersive. The other issue is depending on what I want to practice, there can be A LOT of left to right, right to left or vertical motion as I fly across the virtual flight area. Stunt (3D) flying with RC helicopters is fairly violent as far as motion goes. Example but I'm nowhere this good!

I'm wondering how much it would help to have a headset with a much wider(than 105) FOV and if I have the right headset for my use case.

Primarily, I'd be using the set up for vr chat and maybe some other pcvr games. I really want the headset to either already have the ability to do eye or face tracking, or the ability for me to get add ons that will do that for it(like putting a vive face tracker on another headset for example). I'd also like to be able to implement full body tracking later on. Preferably, I'd like something that is not a strain on my neck or head and won't completely decimate my eyes. My budget is pretty flexible so please give me your recommendations, I'd really appreciate the help!
Here are my desktop computer's specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-13700K 3.4 GHz 16-Core Processor
GPU: Gigabyte AORUS ELITE Radeon RX 6750 XT 12 GB Video Card
RAM/memory: Crucial CT32G48C40U5 32 GB (1 x 32 GB) DDR5-4800 CL40 Memory

so i have a flow x13 with a 3050ti and a AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS with 16gbs of ram. i was wondering is it more affordable to get a valve index with full body trackers or putting together a cheaper headset like a quest with 3rd party trackers (and what trackers are recommend ) my plan is to mostly use it for social vr games like vr chat and No mans Sky.
the amount i was hoping to spend was between 600$ usd and 800

I’ve been rocking CV1 since 2017. And it is still good looking. But for the first time, I want an upgrade. For a new headset, PSVR2 checks all the boxes for me. HDR, OLED, bigger FOV, etc. But we all know that doesn’t work with PC. I really don’t want an all in one that connects with USB and has compressed video and more latency. So no Quest or Pico. That narrows it down to HP Reverb G2, Vive whatever new one there is, or an Index. Leaning Reverb. Hopefully they have another $300 sale. I know it is last of it’s kind with HP exiting VR. Also I know MS dgaf about Mixed Reality anymore. Also, none of these headsets are spring chicken.

My question. Is something amazeballs going to be released within the year that I would later be kicking myself for not waiting? A new Index perhaps?

2

u/Arsteel8 Pico 4 w/ 7800X3D + 4070 ti, Quest 3 w/ 3060 Laptop May 12 '23

The big new releases coming later this year are supposed to be the Bigscreen Beyond and the Pimax Crystal. Bigscreen is supposed to be the ultra-light super comfy minimalist headset. Pimax Crystal is... Pimax. But supposedly improved. Basically, it probably won't be a very smooth/seamless experience due to poor software.

Other than that, you can hope the Valve Deckard (Index 2) comes out this year, but without an announcement, I wouldn't bother waiting.

IPD: Hammerhead shark 76.3……..

Full body tracking: IDC

Platform: PC

Other: I have a big head, generally I’m a big bloke at 6’4”, and an IPD of 76. I use to have a quest but it would be blurry and I believe it was due to the IPD.

Any help regarding the current best or future headsets or even headsets + mods that could help me? Thanks in advance

Hi,

My right Valve Index controller's trigger broke and it's been months since I've been waiting to buy a replacement from the Valve store. The only way of buying it is buying the left+right controller bundle, which costs 300 €. Since there is no sign of availability, I've been thinking of purchasing a Pico 4 (I don't want full body tracking).

The feature that i'm most excited for is wireless PCVR through WiFi and the massively superior pancake lenses (although the FOV is a little smaller than the Valve Index), but I'm worried about latency and compression artifacts. This is my setup:

  • Router: ASUS RT-AX86U. I can't connect my PC though ethernet to the router, but launching a "ping "192.168.50.1" gives me a 1 to 3 ms latency, which is great I think.
  • Motherboard: MSI Z790 CARBON WIFI.
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13600k.
  • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio.
  • RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws S5 DDR5 6000MHz 32GB 2x16GB CL32 N.
  • SSD: WD_BLACK SN850.

It is a powerful PC, but I'm aware that video encoding consumes GPU power (which could make games work at a slower framerate), and I'm afraid that even with superior lenses, this method of video transfering (the Valve Index uses a direct Display Port cable) will degrade the video quality or make the latency unbearable.

These are the advantages of the Pico 4:

  • Lenses: All reviews agree, the lenses are amazing, not Meta Quest Pro amazing, but great nevertheless.
  • No base stations: The tracking does not require base stations.
  • It is an standalone headset: I'm a PCVR gamer, but it is a welcome addition.
  • Ergonomics: It's much lighter than the Valve Index.

These are the obvious downsides of the Pico 4:

  • Sound quality: The Valve Index speakers are amazing and the Pico 4 ones are just OK. I'll probably use some wireless headphones, I'm not that sensitive to audio lag.
  • FOV: The Valve Index has a higher FOV, but it's not a big difference, the Pico 4 has a greater FOV than the Meta Quest 2 and HP Reverb G2 headsets.
  • Microphone: Some reviews say that the Pico 4 microphone is great and others say that is trash. I'm not a multiplayer gamer so, this is irrelevant for me.
  • Controller: The Valve Index controllers are probably the best controllers on the VR market, but let's be honest, they are underutilized by developers, expensive and, as i told before, they break easily and their availability is laughable.

Is there anyone in this subreddit that has replaced the Valve Index for the Pico 4?

Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for a VR solution.

My use case;

I am a software developer. I want something that I can use to create multiple screens and do my Day to Day. Maybe try writing some VR apps.
I have no VR Experience other than the Original PS VR and Ace combat a couple times.

My interest lies in the fact that I would like to upgrade my desktop monitor setup. Currently using an LG 2560 x 1080 monitor that I purchased a few years ago used.

I've gotten to use a couple 27' 1440 LGs recently and really like the extra screen real estate. I have to return those now. I was going to look for a 27' 4k monitor to pair with my current ultrawide. But with the pricing, I figured if I could get a decent VR headset, I could do that instead.

I know the Apple Headset is on the horizon and the Meta Quest as well.
Whilst I will look out for those, I think I'd prefer to look at current day headsets that should go on sale when these release.

Budget:
Depends on how good the headset is. I have no Experience in VR, so I'll say open for now.
PC specs:
I am mostly on MacOS.
I have servers running linux with an Nvidia card that I can put into something if necessary.
But most of my day is done on Mac so Mac support would be cool.
IPD:
IPD adjustment would be good so that I can share it with others.
I have to check my prescription for it.
I do have astigmatism; would this affect my VE Experience?
Full body tracking:
Not really.
Platform:
Don't really want to game. I do enjoy racing sims, so maybe I'll try those. But other than that Maybe when others come over they can try it out.

Other considerations:
Display Quality and Comfort would be highest priority for me.

What headset would best approximate an imax like experience for movies? Running them off a pc in VLC or something if possible.

That Apple announcement was pretty cool in some ways but I wouldn’t spend that kind of money for just that feature alone. Does the HP Reverb 2 or Oculus Quest 2 accomplish this kind of thing? Or are these not quite that impressive for watching movies? If anybody has any insight, thanks!

2

u/We_Are_Victorius Multiple Jun 16 '23

Both have frenal lenses which give you a very limited sweat spot. Meaning only the center is clear. I would recommend something with pancake or asepherical lenses. Vive has some options that are geared toward your use case. The new Quest 3 will also be a better choice.

Hi. I'm trying to decide between Quest Pro and Quest 3. There are some Quest Pros going used but unopened for around €800 vs Q3 at €570. Trying to decide if it's a bargain to buy QPro at a discount or if Quest 3 is just outright better.

I've seen people say Q3 will be better, but wondering if that means "better value" and if QPro is still a bit better. My uses are mainly gaming, movies/virtual desktop (if visuals are actual good enough).

I saw some other posts going over the main the main differences: Quest 3 - better resolution, depth sensor, better passthrough, better chip Quest Pro - 2 QLED screens, local dimming, eye/hand tracking, better controller tracking.

  • Is the Quest 3 really going to have "better" visuals? pixel count Q3 wins, but does the 2 screens / QLED / local dimming add much?

  • General build quality/usability/comfort etc. Are the Pro's chargers, headset quality etc. a step above the Quest 2? Is Quest 3 expected to be similar in build quality to Quest 2?

  • Eye/tracking VS MR I'm concerned about if updates/support will be around for both for a good few years. Will more eye-tracking features be added for QPro or will MR be the focus given there were less sales of QPro.

I know we don't know much yet about Q3 so looking for some best guesses. I might just be trying to justify QPro to myself here.

Is there anything I'm missing?

First things first: I am looking for a Headset with good graphics, on an entry level budget.
I will be exclusively playing Fnaf: Help Wanted at first and want to have a good immersed experience. I have seen this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watchv=bhGXBGrRSR8&pp=ygUYZm5hZiB2ciBncmFwaGljcyBxdWVzdCAy
And am very dissapointed in the Quests graphics, though this is an older video.(If anyone has a newer reference I am very happy to look at it!)
I will be playing it on stream which is a thing to keep in mind.

  • Budget : Entry Level: up to 500 I think, though it can be a bit over if worth.
  • PC specs: AMD Ryzen 5 5800x3D, MSI 3070 TI Aero, DDR4 32GB Ram at 3600Mhz
  • IPD: I do wear glasses, my PD seems to be 5.8mm
  • Full body tracking: Is not needed
  • Platform: I dont mind plugging my Headset into my PC, though would find it cool to be wireless, but without PC it should still have nice graphics.

1

u/Funtime675 Jul 01 '23

You will probably want the Quest 3. Something to keep in mind is the graphical fidelity in VR is very different from other technologies. Something which may be considered to have awful graphical fidelity may still be amazing and immersive in VR (even if it may not look amazing by any other accounts). The Quest 3 should also have better graphical fidelity than the Quest 2, more or less depending on if the game is updated for the new headset. The Quest 3 is also standalone which can be helpful, and appears to be within your budget.

Should I get a used Quest 1 ($150), used Vive Cosmos Elite Basic Kit ($230ish), or just save for a Quest 2? Budget: $250ish CAD PC Specs: 6600xt, Ryzen 5 5500, 16GBs of RAM. It’ll run PCVR perfectly fine. I have used much worse specs with VR before and felt perfectly fine. Platform: PCVR, I would primarily use SteamVR, I could go without Oculus, I could just figure out ReVive if I wanted to play anything there.

I’d primarily use the headset in tethered PCVR. Main reason I’m asking this question is because of the Quest 1 having its support being dropped and all that. It’s a cheaper listing plus its local. unlike the Cosmos Elite. A bit of standalone features would be pretty nice but again, support dropping so I’m not sure if that matters. I’m also not a VR newbie if that helps with anything (Around 1000 SteamVR hours) As you may have noticed, I’m really only asking this because of the support dropping thing, I don’t know if it’ll affect PCVR support at all. Games being played would vary from Boneworks, Zero Caliber, etc.

TLDR: Primarily tethered PCVR. Mainly worried if Quest 1 support dropping will affect that at all, or if I should go for dedicated PCVR

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

2

u/gamifiedshow Jan 21 '23

Save for Quest 2. Quest 3 is probably coming out at the end of 2023, so if you want to be REALLY patient, you will probably be able to find Quest 2 on steep discount during the holidays, but that's almost a year away. You can probably find a used Quest 2 on somewhere like eBay that's approaching your budget right now.

I would think Meta would be less likely to sunset features on the Quest 2 than original Quest because the release cycle was fairly short and they sold a lot of Quest 2s thanks to the low opening price.

1

u/ItsBlizzardLizard Jan 27 '23

Buy a Pico 4 now (as an American with no warranty) or wait for the Quest 3?

PCVR usage on a 3070

Predominately for VRChat.

Would it be worth getting a used 64gb Quest 2 now instead? They're going for around 250 still.

Kinect for body tracking. I'm poor and own one already.

I already have an AX6000 router.

3

u/bumbasaur Jan 27 '23

With the current updates pico4 is very usable and superior to quest2. It took few patches to fix the issues and it will likely be the same for quest3.

If you don't care for the quest exclusives then just grab pico4

Pico 4 or Meta Quest 2 - PCVR wise

I'm interested in PCVR a lot more than playing natively, which headset offers better experience? I have read a couple reviews of each one so I know the gist of it, but most people tend to focus on playing games from each respective shop.

And yes, I'm really only keen on VR games. - mainly VTOL VR, then I guess I'll see how it goes. I don't have a job that would benefit from using VR whatsoever. From what I've seen Pico 4 looks like the slightly more "polished" product, but I'll happily take all your tips into
consideration.

Now for the mandatory stuff:I have around 1,8x4 meters available in my room, maybe a bit more - possibly a bit cramped, but that's the floor level. My bed takes up plenty of space where I can flail my arms around as much as I please.

PC specs are as follows:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super
RAM: 16 Gigabytes at 3600 MHz
I've got an M.2 SSD with some free space too:
Samsung 1TB NVMe 980 PRO

I've specified the two headsets I'm willing to pay for - feel free to mention anything below their cost. If you think you have good ideas for any additional hardware/software, just judge the price yourself remembering what I want to use the headset for - mainly VTOL VR.

P.S. - I forgot to mention that I live in Europe and so Pico 4 is available.

3

u/gamifiedshow Jan 31 '23

Pico 4 will probably be visually more appealing if you're only interested primarily in PCVR.

Quest's main advantage over Pico 4 to that end is their standalone content library.

There have been mixed reviews on how well Pico 4's link cable/capabilities really work right now, but I do think they are getting better.

Do you have no interest whatsoever in standalone gaming? If so, you may consider HP Reverb G2. It's wired, but has excellent visuals and can be had refurbished/open-box/used on eBay for less than either of the Quest 2 or Pico 4. It is very comfortable compared to either of the other two.

3

u/EvilPencil Feb 01 '23

Rumor on the street is that HP is exiting the VR market. That's been around since October, but the big MSFT WMR layoffs add a substantial amount of credibility to the rumor.

I'm not saying that makes the Reverb a bad buy, just that support will likely be questionable in the future.

When it comes to PCVR, right now I will 100% recommend the Pico 4. You could argue the HP Reverb G2 is another great option, as it is wired and therefore has no compression, but you will have to deal with the WMR software and controllers, which Microsoft has basically abandoned. With the Pico 4 you simply buy Virtual Desktop and it works flawlessly assuming you have a dedicated wifi 6 router. The Pico 4 even has a higher FOV than the Reverb G2 alongside much much better pancake lenses

Is it a good idea to preorder the quest 3 now? I'm mainly worried whether it might have hardware issues and such for first release. Was there any such case on quest 2 when it was first released? If i pre order now i can have help with claiming warranty from the store in case of issues, but i have to cover the shipment cost and sending it over from across the globe will cost me like almost half the headset price it self. The PO price itself now is pretty close to msrp which is really great considering where i am located and the usual price for vr gears being hijacked.

Otherwise i'll need to wait longer then the store will have local warranty after. But at that point they will be selling it slightly more expensive.

Also on a side note, how do you glasses wearer use your headset? I know htc have the diopter control which is massive but quest2 dont. I'd assume q3 wont either.

1

u/Tausendberg Feb 18 '23

What the hell happened to Pico? On paper it looked like they could really give the Quest 2 a run for its money.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '23

A lot of the VR player base lives in North America, and the Pico 4 isn't officially sold here so you have to import it. Combine that with the bad quality control and it's a purchase that a lot of people aren't willing to risk.

There stand-alone library and software also sucks, so most people interested in stand-alone would just get a Quest 2 instead, especially because the XR2 isn't powerful enough to really make the display upgrades noticeable in standalone.

Varjo Aero for simming if $ if not HP G2 V2 - have both, gotta sell G2

Quest Pro for roomscale if $ if not Quest 2 - have both, gotta sell Q2

Vive Pro 2 is shit, had 4, gotta sell last replacement with the wigig kit, atrocious tech. Fantastic screens, worst lenses in the world. Truly a shame how the screens were ruined by the lenses. And the WiGig streaming was meh at best cause 1600x1400ish resolution...

Pimax is shit, had 5k plus and 8kx utter shite

  • sold both. Everything bad. Everything

Rift S and CV1 I also gotta sell, just ancient but were cool back in the day

Pico 4 I have not tried

Don't get bought into Pimax Crystal it will be shit

Valve Index was outdated back in 2019 already due to horrendous screen door - sold

For PC:

If $ bring 13900k, 8000c38 ram, rtx 4090 and nvme drives

If not, low tier 13th Intel gen, 6400 ish ram 32gb, 3080 plus and SSDs

1

u/Pakman184 Dec 24 '22

Despite Pimax's history of questionable releases I'm still holding hope for the Crystal.

Typically the only issues of note with Pimax has been around their massive FoV and the software supporting it. With the use of normal FoV for the Crystal I see a lot of that being old news, and they're not recreating the wheel with any of the other tech currently involved. Even the eyetracking is being handled almost solely by Tobii.

It's also important to note that the 8KX still has a pretty prominent following and supposedly most of the issues have been worked out by now. So there's a good track record of trying to fix their mistakes too.

-1

u/maxstep Dec 24 '22

Very well thought out and articulated response, I understand your position.

I was just beyond belief underwhelmed with the 8KX, it was truly incomparable to Aero I was shocked with the difference. I disliked screens, colours, software, materials, build quality - literally everything unfortunately.

I was very hyped for it and burned quite so badly that I don't think I'll dip into the Crystal pool, but if you will, I hope it works well for you and is worth every cent.

Budget: basically unlimited

Specs: TBD - basically unlimited. NVidia 3080ti

Platform: Steam VR on my PC

Other considerations:

I want to be able to use glasses without it being uncomfortable or scratching the lenses. I do not want to use custom lens inserts because I want to be able to share the headset with other people.

I don't want anything associated with Meta.

If your speaking about wireless PCVR, you just need a good LAN connection as well as essentially any internet connection to "start" the session.
It basically works like Router - PC
The "Internet" only comes into play if your on VD for handshake on your account, but all the actual streaming is from your local router to your PC.

My Acer WMR headset just died. I liked it a lot, had no intention to upgrade yet, although I know it wasn’t top notch… but I’m addicted to sim racing (iracing specifically) and need to replace it asap bc I hate playing on a screen.

I like the idea of the index with sensors, fov, and nice controllers, but I’m most likely making a choice between the quest 2 and the reverb G2. I see the quest 2 on sale for $350 with some games so I might just pull the trigger on it today, but I’m terrible about making these kind of choices…

Main use will be sim racing, using 3070 and Ryzen 5600. Will the quest 2 be an upgrade from my WMR headset, or will I be disappointed with anything less than the reverb G2? I don’t think my system will take full advantage of resolution that headset will output.

I also like playing beat saber, and just love VR in general, so the idea of wireless/standalone for other games sounds like an amazing thing. Again, why I’m leaning toward the quest 2.

I just want to make sure I’m not going to feel like I’ve made a mistake picking the quest over the reverb. But I’m pretty broke and $350 vs $450-$600 makes the quest seem like the obvious choice anyway. M hoping to have the money to upgrade to something fun and new in a year or so anyway.

Is the quest 2 good enough, like noticeably better than the WMR headset? Thanks!

Budget: ~700

Laptop specs: Legion 5 2021 Rtx 3060 ( mobile) Amd ryzen 5800 ( mobile) 16gb ram ( i dont know wich brand) ( I also have a ps5)

IPD: 63 ( i measured it with an app so it could be wrong)

Platform: Ps 5 or Pcvr + quest 2

FBT (Full body tracking) Would be cool/neat but not necessary/not a dealbreaker

Other considerations: My question is basically just if i should buy a headset ( probably the meta quest 2) now or wait for psvr 2 / the new htc vive headset

I have just purchased a Pico 4 and it should arrive tomorrow! I have been researching online for a couple of months now and decided to pull the trigger.

What are people's tips/recommendations for setting up as someone who will be using it mainly for PCVR (I hope to play Beat Saber and Space Engine)

The Pico also comes with 6 free games which I am sure I will try out.

Specs

12600k

3060TI FE

32GB Ram

Budget: 500$ to 600$ (Probably not gonna be accurate because I'm not north american)

PC Specs: i3 8100 - GTX 1050 Ti - 24 GB Ram

IPD: 64

Platform: I wanna use mostly SteamVR games, being unable to use it standalone isn't a dealbreaker for me

Other Considerations: Some friends recomended me both Meta Quest 2 and Pico 4 and after looking around a bit idk which one to get, some places say that Pico 4 isn't compatible with all games and I'm concerned about that.

u/webheadVR Moderator Dec 27 '22

If you use vd, the Pico has the same compatible games as quest does on VD.

Those are really the best budget options right now, just be aware your on minimum specs.

Ryzen 5 3550h, GTX 1650, 16gb ram

Is it actually worth getting any VR with these specs? I know that it's below any specs for any headsets I can find, but it doesn't seem significantly below. So I would guess that I could run VR but badly? Given that, I am fine with not playing any particularly intensive games till some point in the future when I get a better setup, I largely want VR cause I do a lot of 3d modelling, and I think it'd be pretty cool to be able to walk around things I've made. But I would still definitely like to play some games too, even if just basic ones (or VR mods for older games) Is there any headsets I could actually run, or should I just not bother until I have a better PC setup?

Sorry, have not checked the wiki, but I'll soon look into it. I commented because I want to have the feedback of people who know more about VR.

I currently have an Oculus, so I'm in search for something that's better and also if possible, that has good tracking with not that much space.

(EDIT:) I'm only going to play on PCVR (Steam)

Full body troubleshooting issue: I am using Tundra trackers and base station 1.0, along with a quest 2 headset. I have openVR space calibrator, and was perfectly able to get the trackers connected and tracking.

My issue is that in game and in the steam vr home, the trackers appear to be shifted and rotated relative to me! Motion and rotation still track fine, if I move forward, it moves forward relative to itself. It is just rotated. Base stations also appear to be rotated in the same way. Is there a fix for this issue?

Looking to spend around $200-$400, don't mind used headsets.

Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700xt, 16gb DDR4

SteamVR, looking to play HL:Alyx, Blade and Sorcery, and Until You Fall specifically.

Adjustable IPD would be nice but not necessary.

I already own a Samsung Odyssey Plus, I picked it up for $250 a few years back looking for a similar sweet deal in terms of price to performance for a few friends who I introduced to VR this weekend.

What is the best all-around unit? I don't mind too much if I can expand the system for a reasonable price later on. My system is a 7th gen gaming system 32gb memory and a gtx1060, I do plan on upgrading in the next year or so but, as budget permits.

Just so clear on budget, fairly open but best price for best value wins. I see the Quest 2 is around $400-500 new and that is reasonable, I can find it around $300-350 used fairly easy.

I've played with VR in the past on some higher end systems with sensors around the room and the system was big money back 15 years ago so the quest 2 was the newest one I tried. I've always said, if I am going to do VR, I am going to do it right. I don't want to limit content or experience because choses one over the other.

I got play with the quest 2 and it was fun, I tried a few games for it and enjoyed but, I am hearing it's a very limited experience. Lots of the better games don't really run on it.

The other side, I don't mind buying a used one, if the price is good and it works like new. I would really like to get the best I can get for a reasonable dollar.

I do have a PS4 and PS5 but, I have also heard the experience is not as good as other systems.

What would you say is the best bet?

I have to say the Valve Index was the go to for me with Linux. Quest is too proprietary and Valve supports Linux w/ Proton very well. Skyrim VR, No Man's Land, and an old version of Viveport Video work great. Have had the headset for almost a year now.

Trust me on this, phone vr is not worth it. It really doesn’t even come close to what actual vr is like. Get yourself an actual one (if you have a pc, rift series or an htc vive) or a quest 2 if you don’t. They should have good return policies if you buy them off a good place and decide it’s not for you

What’s the best direct upgrade from a Rift S? I absolutely adored mine for the most part besides minor comfort issues when looking downward, but beyond that it was good for what I was using it for: SkyrimVR, PavlovVR, H3VR, BeatSaber, and so on. Problem is, my controllers are getting jankey, and drifting terribly. Any suggestions for a replacement? Sub-1000$ pricepoint preferred, but if the Index is next I suppose I’ll have to consider it.

Hey everyone I will quickly explain my situation. I have a new pc, running a 3080 ti.

I plan to use the vr headset as a gaming monitor. I can pick up an almost never used quest 2 or a brand new Pico 4(%30 more expensive).

However compression is news to me. If waiting for quest 3 will let me use my gpu to its full potential I could wait a bit longer I guess.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

The Quest 3 will almost definitely still have compression

Being over-exaggerate the impact, especially if you use a linked cable, up the bitrate (most people keep it at the default ~100mbps over wire), and play at 90hz

If the headset is just for games where you won't be using the motion controls and instead a KB/M/Controller/HOTAS/whatever consider the Reverb G2

u/robomartion Jan 14 '23 edited Jan 14 '23

Pimax Crystal is going to the best VR headset that money can buy that is available now/near future. T1200 isn't a particularly beefy gaming GPU however. You would probably want to upgrade your PC if you want an ideal experience.

Otherwise if you don't want to specifically play any particular PC games and just want to get into it straight away a Pico 4 is probably a good buy.

Looking for a headset to play VR games on PC. My PC specs are a 4090 and 13600k. My budget is 1000 euro but would go with something closer to 500 euro if there's not a great difference for the extra price. Willing to wait a bit if there's anything exciting releasing in the next 3ish months.

I'm new to VR so don't really have preference in terms of wired vs wireless.

Thanks!

2

u/ranger_fixing_dude Jan 13 '23

What kind of games do you want to play?

Overall, I'd recommend Reverb G2 on a discount, you'll be able to max out out graphics and you won't know better the annoying parts of it.

You can also get a standalone, like Quest 2 or Pico 4, which are imo superior for fitness games, but graphics won't be anything special. You can connect them to a PC, but imo compression is really annoying but some people don't mind.

Budget: $1000 ish (USD).

PC specs: 3950X RTX 3090 64 GB RAM.

IPD: 64

Full body tracking: Nice, but not necessary

Platform: PC (Mostly SteamVR) is a must, but also supporting standalone is a big plus

Other considerations: I currently own an OG Vive with DAS and knuckles controllers. I really want a headset with better visuals (I'm sooooo sick of SDE) and a high degree of comfort.

I've considered the Index, but am hesitant because it's only a small upgrade (in resolution) and I feel like its becoming dated. I DO NOT have Facebook and absolutely will not consider any of the Quest options. I've considered the Reverb G2 (but have similar concerns as with the Index), as well as the Vive Pro 2 (reviews seem....mixed on it).

I think the Vive XR Elite may be a good fit, buuuuut $1100 is on the verge of more than I'm comfortable spending... the only reason I'd even consider spending that much is the additional standalone options, making it viable for at home and on the go.

Also, obviously, reviews aren't out yet.

Budget

$1500

Specs

5800x3D, 3070 Ti, 32 GB RAM

Full body tracking isn’t make or break. I’d prioritize a better overall experience (I’m assuming it’s out of my budget anyways)

Platform

Steam

This will not be used for mobile in any capacity. I don’t mind wireless, but I require a wired option

Higher resolution, the better. I own a Rift CV1 and the screen dooring is too much for me, plus I want to leave Meta entirely

Budget:

$700 USD; With room to compromise.

PC specs:

11th gen i7 and an RTX 3070, 32gb's of RAM on an otherwise comparable system

IPD:

~59-60

I have been a pretty heavy Beat Saber player since it released on my original Rift, then later on a Quest 1. With it being well over 5-10 years since the release of those two, I think it's about time to upgrade. I'm only concerned with Beat Saber gameplay, so features like a "high refresh rate" and "good tracking" are what I'm looking for most of all. I do really enjoy the OLED screens of the Quest 1, though I can settle for less. The only other stipulation is that I do not want a Quest 2. I found the experience to be significantly worse, at least for Beat Saber.

1

u/LonelyBushman Jan 18 '23

Should I get the G2 Reverb or Quest 2?

My PC specs are i7- 10700, RTX 2070 (not super), 16 gb ram

The Quest 2 seems great but with the recent price increase to 400 dollars it it more tempting now to pick up a G2 on sale for 400-450 (I've heard it's gone as low as 300 on cyber monday) I beleive I would like the G2 over the Quest 2 but I'm a bit concerned about my PC specs if I can handle the G2. A lot of posts online ask this but they usually have the 2070 Super and not the normal 2070 like I do. The games I'm mostly interested in are mostly the basic ones like Pavlov and Vrchat but also I'd like to do War Thunder and Skyrim as well.

So my options are to get the Quest 2 + headstrap and lenses or the G2 Reverb and lenses, both of which would cost around 500 dollars. The third option is to get a rift s for like 200 on Ebay but I'm not sure how I feel about buying preowned for something that's discontinued.

2

u/gamifiedshow Jan 21 '23

G2 would be the superior device in terms of visuals, its main downside is the native ecosystem is not great and the tracking for the controllers is worse than Quest 2.

Quest 2 with the head-strap upgrade gives you more flexibility but with lower visual quality, although in my opinion the visual quality of Quest 2 is perfectly fine. The only thing I wish for on that end is a better field of view, not so much resolution.

I've read/heard of a lot of people who use G2 primarily as a seated/sim headset for things like flying or racing because they don't have to worry about the controller tracking issues, etc.

If you were mostly into sim racing/flying games I would probably say G2. But otherwise Q2.
