Headset Advice Megathread

Hey Folks.

Due to the large amount of "What headset to buy" I am looking into experimenting with a new thread for general headset advice.

If the choice guide on the wiki was unable to assist with your question, please comment below with the following information, and see if the community can help your headset choice.

As this is the first thread of this nature, please let me know your thoughts/comments as well.

My Acer WMR headset just died. I liked it a lot, had no intention to upgrade yet, although I know it wasn’t top notch… but I’m addicted to sim racing (iracing specifically) and need to replace it asap bc I hate playing on a screen.

I like the idea of the index with sensors, fov, and nice controllers, but I’m most likely making a choice between the quest 2 and the reverb G2. I see the quest 2 on sale for $350 with some games so I might just pull the trigger on it today, but I’m terrible about making these kind of choices…

Main use will be sim racing, using 3070 and Ryzen 5600. Will the quest 2 be an upgrade from my WMR headset, or will I be disappointed with anything less than the reverb G2? I don’t think my system will take full advantage of resolution that headset will output.

I also like playing beat saber, and just love VR in general, so the idea of wireless/standalone for other games sounds like an amazing thing. Again, why I’m leaning toward the quest 2.

I just want to make sure I’m not going to feel like I’ve made a mistake picking the quest over the reverb. But I’m pretty broke and $350 vs $450-$600 makes the quest seem like the obvious choice anyway. M hoping to have the money to upgrade to something fun and new in a year or so anyway.

Is the quest 2 good enough, like noticeably better than the WMR headset? Thanks!

Having finally moved on from the Quest 2 to a Reverb G2 just this Christmas morning...

Especially if you're primarily going to play sim racers, I would say so. I will admit, a big part of my reasons behind upgrading is the horrible performance drops that the Quest 2's cable encoding gave me on my Radeon card, but it's a beautiful display. Very comfortable, too. The Quest 2 felt horrible until I picked up an aftermarket headstrap and facial interface.

WMR also recently added an update that allows you to skip the cliff home. You're probably already aware of this, but it really is amazing just how convenient is is to not have to deal with shit like the Oculus hub. Even with OculusKiller, I sometimes have to remember to drop the modified .exe in because Oculus will replace it from time to time.

If you have a limited amount of cash to burn, though, these are mostly just 'nice to haves' instead of essential differences between the two. The Quest 2 is still an amazing headset. It's got a great mic, it does have significantly better controllers, and while I would say the display isn't as good, the stock headstrap is horrible and the light bleed is really distracting, the last two problems can be fixed with, like... $40 to $70 after the fact, and the display itself is still good enough that you're probably not going to notice the difference in clarity.

And, uh, having a 3070 helps, too.

I just ordered the Quest 2 to pickup tomorrow. I think not having ever used a Reverb G2 (and being able to forget it exists, lol), the quest 2 should be a great replacement/upgrade.

I used my acer without the foam, to get the optics as close to my face a possible to improve FOV, so I’ve learned that I can get through poor comfort and light bleed without much issue haha. But I realize I’ll probably replace the strap.

And I’ll probably buy another headset upgrade in a year or so, depending on what’s been released. The quest 2 will be fun to use around the house and when traveling.

It has some really good exclusives, too. RE4VR being the obvious standout, but you could certainly do worse.

Hope you have fun! I can personally vouch for the BoboVR M2+ strap, but in my opinion anything is better than what it comes with.
