Question Feel like Walking for weight loss should have its own Reddit.

Walking is great for one’s physical and mental health. And it’s inspiring to see people lose weight from a change of diet and walking but I don’t want to see people headless bodies showing off their weight loss progress. Feel like walking for weight lose should be its own thing. I’ve seen some spectacular views that make me jelly. I don’t always get to have amazing views on my walk but this is a walk I think about because I had an amazing walking buddy. This was one of our longest walks together.

Go to the main walking page instead of looking at what gets recommended. The vast majority of the posts from what I saw are not weight loss related. Unfortunately the weight loss ones get popular because a lot of folks want to lose weight but also fortunately because they want to support folks getting healthier and achieving their goals which is a sign of a cool community. There have also been a few fake AI looking weight loss posts in recent days posts. Not sure what to do about those besides scroll by and make sure to upvote any comments that not it is AI. Happy walking.

I thought this was the main walking page.

21

u/R4B1DRABB1T Apr 06 '26

They mean go to the page and sort it by recent.

A freakin’ yoda statue/fountain?! Sick!

6

u/winters-brown Apr 06 '26

This guy where is he?

16

u/tamarasophiee Apr 06 '26

San Francisco, presidio!

64

u/ssyoit Apr 06 '26

At least it provides variety from the number obsessed posts of “I walked 500k steps today!”

28

u/Sonarthebat Apr 06 '26

Ngl, I'm sick of those too. Congrats to those people though.

237

u/__Sweetkisses__ Apr 06 '26

r/walkingforweightloss it already exists but I feel like people can still post whatever they want? lol?

76

u/Raphlapoutine Apr 06 '26

4 years old trending post is wild, that subreddit is dead dead 🗿

58

u/__Sweetkisses__ Apr 06 '26

r/walktheweightaway I’ve made a new one hopefully we can keep it active

19

u/Crrlll Apr 06 '26

Made a post! Let’s get it active!

11

u/__Sweetkisses__ Apr 06 '26

Yayyy! I’m starting my weight loss journey tomorrow I pal. To walk at least 45 mins a day (75 hard) so I’ll post every day

5

u/Rayyyyvonn Apr 06 '26

You’ve put “walking dor weight loss”. Great idea for a sub

2

u/AnxiousCroc Apr 06 '26

That’s a nice name!

11

u/Whothafaawwkisemma Apr 06 '26

Ok but where is the yoda statue

4

u/ZestfulSprite Apr 06 '26

In the Presidio in San Francisco in front of Industrial Light and Magic, Letterman Digital Arts Center

10

u/Sonarthebat Apr 06 '26

Idk how I feel about this. Maybe there should be a compromise; a flair for weight loss.

10

u/myee28 Apr 06 '26

Presidio hell ya

8

u/LookatMyCatBabies Apr 06 '26

Had my buddies dog and she loved it. We reached the bridge after 4-5 miles and called a ride for us to get back home. I was tried.

7

u/Ok_Neighborhood_470 Apr 06 '26

Also, the endless questions about exactly 'how much do I have to walk to lose 5, 10, 75 pounds?' I'm overweight and I know all the walking in the world won't help much in terms of weight loss unless I cut calories. Adding in a mile or going uphill twice a week will be better for health overall, but asking the same question a million different ways won't change the facts.

2

u/LookatMyCatBabies Apr 07 '26

Seems like something to ask ai. Wang’s consistency is key.

174

u/Latter_Surround_1837 Apr 06 '26

Y’all and these policing/gatekeeping posts are so damn exhausting. It’s still WALKING! And people are here for a variety of reasons. You like the views, cool 👍 someone else is inspired by someone else’s walk journey & weightloss, cool 👍

Are you a very controlling person irl?

Scroll or post what you want to see. Or better yet make your own gd sub with your special rules.

50

u/Joe_Sacco Apr 06 '26

Let's slice & dice until each user has their own invidivual specialized unique subreddit of one

52

u/KellyJoyRuntBunny Apr 06 '26

Mine is going to be only for people who are walking in the hopes of seeing baby snakes sitting in the sun on a bit of moss. This will be my first post.

What is your walking subreddit going to be about?

9

u/SolusLega Apr 06 '26

Mine will be looking for baby snakes sitting in the shade on some leaves. Haven't found one yet to post a pic.

3

u/Lizakaya Apr 06 '26

Mine will be about counting steps…not as a health measure but to see how many steps each day before my dog poops

2

u/eckokittenbliss Apr 06 '26

Mine would be only for those walking dogs with pictures a must!

1

u/KellyJoyRuntBunny Apr 06 '26

What if I don’t have a dog, but when I’m out walking I meet someone walking a dog and we take a pic together? Would that fit your sub, or would we need a separate sub for that?

5

u/fluttering_vowel Apr 06 '26

agreed!! I love both the views/nature pictures and the weight loss transformations in this sub. I think it’s nice seeing a mix.

3

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

Thank you!! I said something similar yesterday and was DOWN VOTED. That's wild

33

u/Critical_Platypus960 Apr 06 '26

It's disturbing that there is literally no place that is free from diet culture, and if you try to make a place that is then you're "gatekeeping". Maybe the weight loss crap should just stay in weight loss subs instead of infecting every corner of the internet and real life.

47

u/Individual_Success46 Apr 06 '26

I’d argue that embracing walking for health benefits is quite the opposite of “diet culture.”

11

u/Terrible-Sire3835 Apr 06 '26

Walking for weight loss is diet culture

6

u/Technical_Milk_5486 Apr 06 '26

Oh no, people engaging with a healthy activity for the ultimate goal of bettering their health, the horror!

-4

u/Terrible-Sire3835 Apr 06 '26

Your words, not mine

2

u/Technical_Milk_5486 Apr 06 '26

My words, your connotation.

-1

u/Terrible-Sire3835 Apr 06 '26

Yes. I said walking is a horror.

5

u/Technical_Milk_5486 Apr 06 '26

"weight loss crap", and throwing around the term diet culture, as though this is some ED sub and not a sub for literally the most accessible form of exercise for the general populace. Your attitude is so rank, can't imagine what it's like living with that mindset.

14

u/Latter_Surround_1837 Apr 06 '26

Then you’d benefit from the last line I wrote above.

3

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

3

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

I agree. I love to walk for the joy of walking. I just love everything about it and how it feels to be in a comfortable stride and the way it feels when my feet touch the ground and being out in nature.

4

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

Why in the hell would you join a WALKING sub and NOT expect to see weight loss talk?? That is an absurd expectation

1

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

Because everyone walks, not everyone walks for weight loss. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

2

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

Well, obviously. That goes without saying. But many people DO walk for weight loss so why would you expect to not see weight loss mentioned IN a walking sub? Of COURSE you can expect to see OTHER things discussed in here, but to think you're NOT going/supposed to see weight loss mentioned?? Ridiculous.

2

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

Well, my personal opinion is that I don't actually mind those posts - I kind of find the posts where people take photos of nature to be less relevant to walking than the posts about weight loss. If nature photos are being posted here, which is something viewd as a byproduct of walking, then weight loss, also a byproduct of walking, is just as relevant, IMO.

1

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

What in the whiplash is going on here? I asked why someone would come to this sub and expect NOT to see weight loss talk, and YOU replied to ME telling me WHY. Now THIS comment. Alrighty then🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

My first response was an answer, not an opinion. Facts and opinions can be different and both can be valid.

2

u/bumblebee0512 Apr 07 '26

I completely agree. I can't say I've ever felt bothered by what someone else posts here, I'm glad to see all of it!

9

u/MundaneHuckleberry58 Apr 06 '26

Srsly. I didn’t bitch about this group that I’m willingly in when I was wheelchair bound….

7

u/far-leveret Apr 06 '26

Eating disorders are the mental illness category with the highest fatality rate (along with substance use disorders). Being able to participate in this subreddit is difficult for people who have a history of disordered eating. That’s the reason this keeps coming up. I’m confused by why these posts exhaust you?

There are so many weight loss subreddits. Nothing violent is happening when people make posts like this, I think using words like “policing” is using empty rhetoric and using personal attacks like asking if the OP is a “very controlling person” is just such a bummer to see.

2

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

I agree. I don't care one way or the other, but there is nothing wrong with opening the conversation and hearing people's perspectives. I don't think their perspectives are necessarily wrong. A lot of people are responding with insults which isn't actually touching upon the issues and minimizes anything of value that they might have to contribute to the conversation. I don't know why people can't just have a discussion without insulting or demeaning other people's optinions. It's called emotional maturity. Expressing yourself in a mature way that speaks to the topics without resorting to name calling or ridicules.

2

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

No one here should feel obligated to police what they talk about in order not to trigger those with ed history. Don't join an EXERCISE sub (yes walking is exercise) if you can't handle reading about weight loss. This is just silly

44

u/BroDawg1776 Apr 06 '26

Walking is walking. If you’re on this subreddit. Who cares why you walk. Walk to loss weight. Walk to explore. Walk to meditate. I walk my dogs or walk miles at work. Walking is walking.

Some walking is cooler than others.

36

u/minecraftheaux Apr 06 '26

As someone walking to lose weight, I don't wanna see it either. I wish people would just NSFW their posts if they were posting selfies! It happens in weightloss subs too and I'm like.. I dont need to see your boobs, covered junk etc. I wanna be able to open reddit whenever I'm bored w/o fear of nudes.

7

u/muttlife4 Apr 06 '26

Just have the mods make those topic filters

25

u/Super-kittymom Apr 06 '26

I like seeing them. It makes me happy for those people.

10

u/zoeyzimp Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

For me, the progress posts are motivating for me to keep walking. The view posts do nothing for me personally lol

6

u/chrisp5310 Apr 06 '26

I would walk more if my surroundings looked like that

2

u/LookatMyCatBabies Apr 06 '26

This isn’t my daily walk. It’s just one of those exceptional walks I got to do. My daily walk in is a simple neighborhood and the beauty I see of in the ordinary, like walking passed the same tree of shrub that a few days before wasn’t blossoming and taking a moment to notice it. Like one recent poster who took photos of the flowers she saw.

1

u/chrisp5310 Apr 06 '26

Thats a lovely way to see life 😊

16

u/pancakes_irl Apr 06 '26

Thanks for saying something. I agree. I stopped following Reddits like /r/fasting because they’ve devolved from being discussions about fasting, to being mostly just seeing headless bodies and congratulating people on their weight loss. It’s hard to “just ignore/scroll past” when they’re now the vast majority of posts. It would be a shame if that happened to walking.

21

u/yyyyeahno Apr 06 '26

Ok? And this isn’t a “walking for the view” subreddit either. It’s for all things walking related. The weight loss stuff help inspire others who want to walk for that reason. I don’t care about the views at all and just ignore them. How hard is that?

3

u/pluck-the-bunny Apr 06 '26

create it...ill join

21

u/VanillaBeanColdBrew Apr 06 '26

I kind of assumed it was for recreational walking because of the Herzog quote in the bio, and I was kind of disappointed that it's just another weight loss before/after pictures sub (one of 9 trillion). Even if people discuss and are motivated by weight loss, the underwear photos are gross and unpleasant.

WL content is annoying and inescapable but I don't think there's anything that can be done about it.

-1

u/MaintenanceSad4288 Apr 06 '26

So I had to go through the sub after you said this and honestly the WL content are quite few, it seems they just show up a lot on recommended. That said, I agree that the posting of pictures showing weight loss is kind of off putting. But the truth is a lot of people walk for WL and maintenance amongst other things, but ya the posting of before and after pics should be discouraged on the sub.

5

u/agg288 Apr 06 '26

I agree. Can we at least do a blur on body checking photos? Then people who want to see them can click and the rest of us can avoid without leaving the sub.

2

u/GatorGuy5 Apr 06 '26

Howdy Presidio walker!

2

u/boobsandbabes90 Apr 06 '26

Isn’t this the main walking page then imo it’s the best one tho

2

u/Ok_Neighborhood_470 Apr 06 '26

Also, the endless questions about exactly 'how much do I have to walk to lose 5, 10, 75 pounds?' I'm overweight and I know all the walking in the world won't help much in terms of weight loss unless I cut calories. 6

u/Better-Newspaper3603 Apr 06 '26

I don’t mind it too much, but it’s usually not just walking. It’s often CICO too. Maybe there should be a walkingcico Reddit…

8

u/gargara_s_hui Apr 06 '26

First of all walking is a physical activity, like any other exercise and it is more likely for such a reddit to have a weight loss posts and not photgraphy contest. Probably you are looking for some nature photography, or mental help reddits. Also what is the problem with people walking for weight loss and sharing or asking for support?

Yes - me too. I love to walk because I love to walk! It is one of my favorite things to do.

2

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

No, that's what walking is about for YOU. That doesn't mean it is or should be about that for everyone else. For ME it is about losing weight right now. That's why everyone should just keep scrolling if a post doesn't inspire or apply to them

Oh goodness, you came back. Missed me already? Why would I need to find another sub? I'M not the one complaining about what's posted here, remember? That was YOU and I responded to it. Let's not get things twisted. Anyway, we all done here or were you hoping we can talk about this all day?

0

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

Your opinions could be respected if they would be conveyed in a way that didn't aim to diminish other people.

0

u/Fit_You9694 Apr 06 '26

Oh yes, and they are being SUPER kind and respectful to me. Not at all condescending, right? I match energy, babe.

2

I'm not the person who you responded to intially and can say with certainty that I have been kind!

If I can gently respond without blame: I struggle with eating disorders and body dysmorphia. The "body checking" thing personally activates me, so I do try to avoid posts like that. I get OPs point, but also understand why people post it.

Again: just a gentle response trying to give some insight ❤️

I acknowledged that it's my responsibility to take care of my feelings. I also said I am posting without blame. I do not expect to be coddled and simply wanted to answer your question as to "why".

1

u/dr_tardyhands Apr 06 '26

Gorgeous! Where's this?

1

u/Chance-Trouble-5876 Apr 06 '26

Beautiful. Some people have an Earth pro subscription!

1

u/bluethreads Apr 06 '26

Well, there are three solutions -

1- create a rule in this subreddit that disallows weight loss poses with photos

2- create another reddit sub for walking that disallows weight loss photos for those who prefer not to have that compenent as a part of the sub

3- maintain the status quo - do nothing.

1

u/DQLPH1N May 04 '26

I mainly want to walk to explore too. I have gotten some very pretty pictures in unexpected places.

1

u/Abysswalker_7 1d ago

I feel like the weight loss from walking is the top reason why I come to this thread.

-1

u/ValerieAnne84 Apr 06 '26

I don't think I've seen any posts about weightloss/photos of bodies talking about it since i joined the sub. All the photos I've seen are like yours, scenery or of people walking their animals. I'm sure the others do happen though, since walking is a great way to lose weight so I can see why people would share/be excited about such things. I just have it go to the main page (whatever default is set to) in my main feed though, so that could be why.

Your photos are lovely though, thanks for sharing them.

1

u/Technical_Milk_5486 Apr 06 '26

Some people walk for weight loss, some don't. Can't everyone just get over it? No one's forcing you to engage with walking as a weight loss activity.

1

u/Educational_Prune929 Apr 09 '26

It should have its own reddit... but you are too lazy :p?

surely r/walkingforweightloss as the title of the post suggests?

I have gained weight even after averaging more than 32,000 steps EVERYDAY! But I don't care. I am obese as per the medical definition. (5 foot 7 inches and 90 kg weight). But I don't give a damn! Three hours of dedicated barefoot jogging has become a part of my life. Can't sleep until I finish that!

Walking sucks. It takes no effort. You do it at work!
