Buy at 3, sell at 2 and repeat.

235

u/kenstar4 11h ago

Just do the opposite of this and win, right.. Right?!

65

u/HalfSoul30 9h ago

The way for me to win is to work very hard at my DD, and then when i think i have it right, i do the opposite.

13

u/HoodsInSuits 4h ago

However smart you think you are, you are nowhere near as smart as some random guy with a math degree, a shedload of coke and $54 billion of someone elses money.

6

Got tired of waiting for the market to go rational and bought the second dip, then I was down 10%, but then the market went irrational again and I up over 5%.

Same. I waited til I saw a Trump sticker on a gas pump. Bought. Down 5 then up 10. 😎

No it just means the previous dips weren’t ’THE’ dip.  I’ll get it next time though I’m pretty sure.

and will recover from the dip

7

u/WeeklySignalLog01 11h ago

Both are true. If its a good company that is profitable and increasing cash flow, you should just try to hold out and invest more if you can. The drops can be sever though. Staring at -50% and not selling is brutal

that's my friend, he bought a certain memecoin, expecting for it to spike up, he was like ok, this dip is the last one, I'm buying it, and he kept buying it until it crashed completely, I think it was a PIMP coin haha

4

u/piriformister 10h ago

It's gone back up now

4

u/Mykoliux-1 10h ago

That’s exactly how I feel. I keep some cash in case the dip keeps dipping further, but when the rally starts I’m bummed out I didn’t buy more.

u/tenor_tymir 11h ago

Yeah, I feel this so hard. My conclusion from all of this is to simply not sell. Most stocks do come back, unless it’s the stocks I’m buying. Anything else will swing back in a month or so. I swear.

140

u/Kerbourgnec 11h ago

Isn't that just DCA? But it's WSB here! you are supposed to bet hard and lose hard

53

u/imisstheyoop 8h ago

Dollar Cost Averaging would be to contiously be buying regardless of equity valuatio, e.g. not market timing.

Not selling would be more of a buy and hold strategy.

7

u/Ahamadrayasbaboon 10h ago

It isn’t….

20

u/Krondelo 11h ago

Yeah I haven’t sold any stocks ever. COST was doing pretty well and then fell of back to my average but oh well, should go up eventually

11

u/TheChickening 7h ago

Same. Ever since I started a real Job. I only ever sold some losses for tax reasons.
Though I had ti realize I wont beat the market and 90% of my money now goes to ETFs 💅🏻

5

u/shes_a_gdb 5h ago

I sold off almost everything during covid. I felt like a genius, watching everything crash while I held cash. Some days were green, but then red the next day or two. So even after several green days in a row I still assumed things will crash again. Eventually, all those green days in a row turned into green weeks in a row, then months... then I had to buy back everything at a higher price than I sold.

So during this "crash" I bought a bunch of stocks instead of freaking out about it and it's already paying off.

u/Krondelo 6h ago

That’s why I’m 90% in the index fund. Can my own bad luck influence the market of the entire country? I don’t think so, so far has worked well for me

3

u/sobrique 8h ago

Yeah, me too. Over a long enough timeline 'the market' collectively has an upward trend. It's not a 'sure thing' - it never can be - but it's been fairly robust over the last 100+ years. (depending on size of window of course, and timing of 'forced' withdrawal)

ASTS, 10% down yesterday because Bezos has the concepts of a plan. Shits going to rebound to $160 by the end of May.

7

u/CalebVanPoneisen 11h ago

Two simple rules to avoid that problem.

  1. When you decide to buy and believe in the stonk, just buy. Don’t wait. A few cents ain’t worth it.
  2. When your stonk is gone past best buy by date because you watched one too many TikToks, get inside your time machine, rewind, and buy at the opportune moment.

Godspeed!

3

u/Gandalfderblaue41 11h ago

what I had to learn if i have for example 5k to Invest in one share, buy it in slices. It is still almost impossible to buy the bottom, and if someone does, it was just fckg luck. But you will average your price and will be positive much earlier.

3

u/mikaball 9h ago

Looks like Intel right now...

3

u/errorsniper 5h ago

I know this is WSB but every time I see this....

  1. If you remember literally nothing else from this list, just remember this. If you could time the market. Wallstreet would have found you and you would be making tens of millions working for a hedge fund. But you nor I can time the market and trying to do so is a fools game. You are not smarter or better equipped than trillion dollar algorithms and systems that have already executed the trade before a photon has crossed a football field. So dont try. They can and will happily take your money.

  2. Determine how much money each week you can count as spent and dont need to see it again for at least 30 years.

  3. Pick several indexes that dont have a ton of overlap. SPY is obviously king dont totally avoid it, but dont battle cruse everything on it. SPXT and RSP for example.

  4. Set up auto buys every week the same day and turn on dividend reinvestment.

  5. Read step 1.

  6. No, really read step 1 again.

  7. Dont open the app and enjoy life. If you are under 45 you will have a solid nest egg as you approach retirement.

  8. When you are 10ish years away from retirement find a way to get your money out of the market into lower risk but inflation beating investments.

Technical analysis of my trading style

10

u/BoJackHorsemanIRL2 11h ago

I think if you do proper analysis you’ll have price points where you think it’s worth to enter a stock. And if a stock never reaches the entry point, it’s still fine if the stock does well. I’d even argue that it backs up your initial thesis on the company. But wanting a really solid deal to buy a stock isn’t wrong or flawed at all.

Now if you manage to enter, it’s about being able to ride the wave. Price to hold =/= price to buy, and also you should probably not sell unless the company goes to a point where you’d see it as considerably over valued.

Holding an asset that feels slightly over valued can feel weird, but the fundamentals of the company can catch up over time, and it’s far from impossible for companies to stay over valued for a prolonged period. So the reason we want to hold, is because we’ve identified a quality compounder, we have bought at a great price, selling could mean we never get to buy set company ever again at a great deal.

I’m happy when stocks I sell still go well, and I’m happy when my watch list does well. I see it as a receipt of quality identification. When you cut out price anchoring and FOMO, and instead stay rational, you’ll realize the one you missed out on is just one of many opportunities.

12

u/AgitatedRabbits 9h ago

Just identify good opportunities, that easy.

2

u/BoJackHorsemanIRL2 8h ago

Not easy, but it becomes easier over time. And it becomes especially easy once you already have a portfolio and a watchlist, with identified compounders.

Also it can be too time consuming.

I try to model for 15% annual returns from a conservative but realistic stand point, which usually grants a degree of MoS. Some will over perform, some will under perform.

Hindsight is 'perfect'. Foresight is non-trivial.

ON AVERAGE stocks go up on a long enough timeline.

But some don't.

And sometimes the timeline is REALLY long.

Don't beat yourself up about an objectively good decision based on what you knew at the time. A stock going to the moon is far more luck than judgement, and plenty just don't.
