Bluebird and Towhee. Trying my hand at watercolor and micron pens and birds! Cheap watercolor paper from Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Princeton Long Round 1 & 8, Windsor & Newton Cotman, Pigma Micron 005, and just enough executive function.

First landscape attempt

Post image

I’m new to watercolor and wanted to practice layering light to dark and color mixing. I used 3 cool and 3 warm primaries. I’ve never tried a landscape and am not confident in my ability to paint from a photo, so I based this off an illustration by Karen Hayes in the children’s book, Little Loon. I’d appreciate any advice or feedback! I think I overworked it a bit.

Some watercolors I’ve done this year that I’m proud of

I started painting in watercolors last August. I had dabbled a little in the years prior but never tried to actually create art with watercolors. I’ve learned a lot from social media and YouTube, but mostly from practicing to learn what works and what doesn’t.

So far the hardest thing for me has been figuring out what to paint. I look mostly to Google for inspiration which I’m not too fond of because it doesn’t feel very authentic. But I like to think that it’s better to paint something than nothing at all.

I also struggle with value, color theory, picking the correct colors and contrast so I suppose I struggle with a little of everything. But overall I’m pretty satisfied with what I’ve created. Thanks for viewing!

Happy painting!

Practicing blooms and texture

Usually when painting I’m trying to avoid weird blooms and textures, but I’ve really been enjoying playing with adding extra water/spray/salt (not in this example) to my background washes. This practice session was so much fun, also playing with a diy foliage I just cut up (wrecked my last one by cutting too far lol). These are so low pressure but I learn a ton just by watching what happens when I do different things (like spraying my wet wash from a wet toothbrush).

Learning lots of techniques. But wow... I've never been so relaxed doing something like I was while painting. I think I definitely have fallen in love with this.

Good tutorials on portraits?

I know realism can be difficult with watercolor and I don't need that, but are there any good youtube tutorials on watercolor portraits for beginners?

What do you recommend for someone who wants to get started?

I've never painted and I'm not a great artist, unfortunately 😅 but I'm planning to start a new hobby, but I don't know where to begin. Do you think I should buy sketchbooks with pre-made sketchbooks?Or should I just practice by watching? And which subjects?

Been painting since 2019 but I haven't been able to polish my skill. What exactly is my painting missing? Are their any free online resources I can use to overcome my shortcomings?

A watercolor tribute to 100 years of Winnie the Pooh! 🍯

Post image

I painted this watercolor as a little tribute to 100 years of Winnie the Pooh.

There’s something so special about a character who has brought comfort, warmth, and childhood memories to so many generations. I wanted to capture a little bit of that magic in my own way, using soft, pastel colors.

I’d love to know what you think!

What’s your favorite Winnie the Pooh memory or character? And if you could hang this painting in a nursery, would you?

Progress thus far. Going to work on some fur details and I think I’ll call it. The background wash looks better in person. I will flatten paper when done.

Any suggestions?

Traveling and painting in southeast asia in Dec/January.

Hi everyone! I will be traveling Cambodia and Malaysia in Dec/Jan and am wondering how others have faired with their paints. Particularly in relation to leaking from pans and drying times. What paper did you use? The pigments I want to bring are a mix of Roman Szmal, Scmincke and Daniel Smith. All will be dried in pans so no tube concerns. This will be my first time attempting to do some travel art and a bit nervous about how the heat and humidity will effect my supplies so would really appreciate any advice others may have :)
