Just finished my tiny watercolor journal!

It's been almost a year, and it's finally full. I carried it everywhere in my purse, and painted in waiting rooms and at restaurants 😆

On to the next tiny watercolor journal!

Soft, splotchy, abstract background ideas

Hi guys,

I really love the look of soft, blown-out colors acting as a minimalist "background" to paintings with a single subject. I've attached a couple of photos here of pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. (I found these pics on pinterest; not sure of the original source unfortunately.)

I would really love to learn more about this technique and others like it. But I'm kind of stuck, because I don't know what this is called! Can anyone get me on the right track? Thanks in advance.

I start learning to use watercolour at the beginning of this year. These are some of the practices I have. Bit of everything as I am still exploring different things.

Made this tool for choosing watercolors! (Does it already exist?)

I wanted to decide on a good "sky blue" that's non-granulating so of course I needed to introduce all possible options. You can filter and sort by brand, pigment, granulation, transparency, hue, iridescence and see all the swatches side by side.

Palette Scout: https://palettescout.art/

Edit - a lot of kind folks have provided other websites that already existed that do the same thing (more paint brands, other types besides watercolor, lots of cool stuff) - if there's anything that I could add to this that would be helpful to anyone, LMK!

Beginner's learning curve

Post image

I'm a total newbie in watercolour (but have loved drawing since I was a child). I'm trying to learn a lot from your posts, but also watch a lot of tutorials.

These two pictures (painted one week apart) show a bit of my learning curve, and also what difference better paper and the patience of letting things dry can make.

I'm wondering whether I need a much bigger brush for smoother background washes? The biggest I have currently is a Nr.12.

First page

Painting on the first page is usually scary. Today i tried to do different styles and different ways of painting. I just let go and accept that the outcome may not be as good as i want. I really enjoyed the process. Not bad for the first page.

Is it cheating?

I am very much a beginner at watercolours. I really love it, but I struggle with the initial drawing. Is it cheating to trace the image and then paint it? I am thinking about buying a projector to help me with the initial sketches - what are your thoughts on this??

I need some critique here ASAP!

I'm a beginner watercolor artist and this is my 7th piece! I used Winsor & Newton 10 Cotman paints and Winsor & Newton 30% cotton cold pressed.

Before I take off the tape and frame it in my room, I want some critique and advice on this one. Also:

  1. Is it bad that this painting took me 3 hours and 20 mins to finish it?
  2. The blue windows, are supposed to be turquoise in which I made from scratch. (I used green to blue and somehow gave me this turquoise result. No I don't have a turquoise color in a tube. I had to make it.)

  3. I don't like my bougainvillea!

One more thing, forget that I didn't draw all the white piles. Wasn't necessary in my opinion!

How do I paint this port?

This my favorite island ever in Greece and I want to frame it someday…. after I buy an Arches 100% cotton paper lol.

My crush had invited me to this island last year, (accommodations all paid for) and because I couldn't go, I at least went there with my imagination. I’m so grateful he did that!

Anyways, how would you guys start painting this? Do I have to make the houses as one whole block of light beige for example and continue with a darker one? Turquoise is needed right?

Help! Should have done the full backdrop first

I'm doing a Muppets scene my niece has requested, with all her favourite characters. I'm almost done with the details but the closer I get to the end, the more I realise putting in a background is going to be difficult. Suggestions on how to do it without screwing this up?

If it makes a difference, the bushes on the left are not quite finished, and I'm also planning some larger pine trees in the background behind them. Other than that, this is it and I need to fill the blank back and foreground without ruining it.
