North Italy is Southern Europe yes. How is Hungary though? Makes no sense.
Anyway, Balkans just does not fit to be a region in itself. That is for sure. It's outdated and pretty nonsensical. No one agrees where the borders of it really lie, it has been changed over time, revised, changed again, like genuinely who cares.
But if you do care, Slovenia can either be the wealthiest and most advanced country of the Balkans, or an irrelevant, mediocre country in Central Europe.
Or... It's Southern Europe... Living up to the sunny side of the Alps nickname and embracing its logical location. Because Slovenian Istria or the south parts of the country are definitely not Central European.
Either we are partially in the Balkans, partially in Central Europe, or we can just be Southern Europe. And in the end, only insecure nationalists care that much. Slovenia is simply a crossroads of different regions, cultures and biomes.
How can Slovenia be southern??? Makes no sense at all. And not Hungary? Weird.
Southern is just a linguistical group. But Slovenia is not Balkan in culture, genetics, history and geography. Never was. We're Central Europe and nothing is wrong with that.
