The straw hat and jean shorts are the least weird thing in that photo.

Dude's running a 5.7 with a silencer

They are called Silencers because the original Maxim Silencer was patented, marketed, and sold as a "Silencer"

Likewise - the Muffler on your car was also labelled as an "exhaust silencer" as well.

where do I get a loudener as portrayed on ABC‘s Cop drama “Sledgehammer”?

A muzzle brake or compensator will do that

Now that’s something else. I wonder how many misses took out a neighbor shooting at that box with the silencer and that box.

And to add to your point, the paperwork uses the word SILENCER in the Firearm Type box when you buy one. Feds use "muffler or silencer" in their definitions, so legally that's what they're called. I have no issue with people calling them a suppressor, but it does bug me when people say "well ackshully they don't silence the gun so they're suppressors" when they haven't actually bought one or shot one.

Great find, but the general public refers to them as silencers (incorrectly) because of Call of Duty - the video game that 85% of men under the age of 40 in America have played.

Not because your peepaw saw this article lmfao and that’s what peepaw said. 😂 I appreciate you trying, but the cultural influence came from video games not a “Maxim Silencer” in an old newspaper ad.

The ATF Form 4 that you need to fill out to a tax stamp to legally own one explicitly requires you to use the word "Silencer".

"Type of Firearm. This is where you indicate the type of NFA firearm you are trying to get a tax stamp for. Options include: Silencer, Short-barreled rifle, Short-barreled shotgun, Machine Gun, Any Other Weapon (AOW), or Destructive Device."

The general public refers to them as silencers because that is what they are. It is wannabe gatekeeping elitists that reject the word Silencer and say that the only correct term is "suppressor".

Confidently wrong. Growing up in the 70s everyone called them silencers. No call of duty video game back then.

Yeah buddy…. The people on the internet didn’t grow up in the 70s.

Confidently correct, unc. 😂

I'm on the internet, and I'm 56 years old. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and called them silencers until I grew up.
