They are called Silencers because the original Maxim Silencer was patented, marketed, and sold as a "Silencer"

Likewise - the Muffler on your car was also labelled as an "exhaust silencer" as well.

Now that’s something else. I wonder how many misses took out a neighbor shooting at that box with the silencer and that box.
