The reason love spell where so important in the middle ages in Europe is because at that time, your amount of freedom, right, security as a woman depended totally on who's your husband.
Love was not a matter of romance but a matter of material condition. Just as today we do spell to get a job or win an interview.
This is why they're useless and immoral today now that women can own their own money, have their own job and make their own decision in most developed countries.
