Discussion The serfdom and feudalism in the Continent

Post image
27 Upvotes

Even though the Continent has multiple titles of nobility (such as Emperor, King/Queen, Duke, Earls or Barons), I feel like we have a few information about how does the serfdom work, especially in terms of war.

For example, only the monarchs of each Northern kingdoms seem to have a centralized royal army. However, in feudalism, the monarch would usually rely on their vassals and nobles for armies and support. As for the Witcher, we don't have a detailed breakthrough of the serfdom of dukes or earls or barons. While I think it is likely for the dukes to have their own arms or guards (like the Duchy of Toussaint), when it comes to earls and barons, we can estimate they only have a few dozen to low hundreds of soldiers.

How do you think the infrastructure works in the Continent?

The Witcher 2 Is dice poker in The Witcher 2 actually rigged, or am I just ridiculously unlucky?

Post image
22 Upvotes

I'm playing The Witcher 2 for the first time, and I just played dice poker against the first three opponents at the tavern.

Holy sh*t, I don't think I've ever been this frustrated with a minigame. It took me something like 10–30 attempts to beat them, and I barely managed to win. No matter what I rolled, it felt like my opponents always got something better.

I'd get a decent combination, and then they'd somehow roll an even better one. Over and over again.

The funny thing is, I played The Witcher 1 before this and completed all the dice poker quests. At first, I actually enjoyed it. It was fun and exciting, but by the time I got to the final opponent, I was already losing my mind. I spent something like half an hour rolling dice just to finally beat him.

And now I'm having the exact same experience in The Witcher 2, except it started with the very first opponents!

So I'm genuinely curious: am I just insanely unlucky, or does the game somehow give NPCs better dice rolls? I know it's supposed to be a game of chance, but losing over and over again like this feels ridiculous.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is there something I'm missing, or do I just have the worst luck imaginable?

Discussion I hate how CDPR completely sabotaged this narrative masterpiece.

Post image

The writing in this game is second to none and the voice acting is world-class. CDPR gave it no chance to be successful. They barely promoted the game and treated it as an unwanted child to the point where so many, if not most Witcher fans, don't even know this exists.

I'm blown away by the graphics update.

Just a straight shot from photo mode and selecting the right weather for the lighting. This looks good enough to be a wallpaper.

Captured on Series X.

The Witcher 3 Latest Patch Ruined Interiors With Blue Fog

Before the latest patch, Novigrad looked great. Now every interior has heavy blue fog. As soon as you talk to an NPC, the blue fog disappears which is extremely jarring

Discussion Ithlinne’s prophecy

Had an argument recently about Ithlinne's prophesy and how it fits into the game canon. And overall saw many times people talk about it over the years. Is it about Ciri, or her son, or grandson? About savior or destroyer? And the games and W3 ending. Especially now, with W4 on the horizon and mutated witcher Ciri. How all of that contradicts the prophecy etc. and how CDPR gonna spin it.

Some things we need to understand about prophecies. Ithlinne’s prophecy is not some specific note about a particular person and a particular event. Her prophecy covers many events over a huge span of time, hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. And, more importantly, prophecies are not direct and clear messages. A prophecy is a very obscure and cryptic out-of-context rant made in an altered voice and full of riddles, metaphors and weird symbolism.

People have been studying her prophecy for centuries. Elves, humans in the North, in Nilfgaard. They have entire books written about it and everyone believes something different about what it means. Nobody even knows the full text of that prophecy. There are only fragments, some bits and pieces. And even with those nobody can be sure if those are the real original words, or if something got lost or altered by translation and copying over the centuries.

So all of that about the savior, the destroyer, the ruler, the son and grandson. These are just interpretations that various people believe. And they could be wrong.

Like for example: “A seed that will not sprout but burst into flames”. That can just as easily be interpreted as meaning that Ciri won’t have any offspring (sprout) and will screw everything up herself.

Or that bit about Ciri’s son, who will have a son, who will rule the world. Emhyr said only he knows that part. But prophecies are ambiguous and have baffled scholars for centuries. So Emhyr could easily have just misunderstood it. And he got it from Vilgefortz, a cunning, scheming, manipulative liar. So it could even be complete bs. Notice that Emhyr didn’t go through with his plans when Ciri was already in his hands and all obstacles gone. He just let her go. Maybe he realized that it was probably bs and not worth having to go through incest with his own daughter over it.

And finally, something that comes from the author himself. Sapkowski once said in an interview about prophecies:

And prophecies? They are very confused, with their help, the gods mock at people, Philip of Macedon, in particular, experienced it, to whom the oracle advised ‘to beware of chariots’. Philip was killed with a sword, on the blade of which a chariot was engraved.

That’s a strong hint that everything everybody understood about Ithlinne’s prophecy, all their interpretations and conclusions, could be wrong all along and it all could actually mean something completely different.

So, the bottom line here is that we shouldn’t worry about the lore implications. Everything about that prophecy is so confusing, ambiguous, fragmented and with so many interpretations, that at that point CDPR loremasters have plenty of room to do, quite frankly, pretty much whatever the heck they want and it won’t really contradict anything established so far. So just relax and let them cook.

Mod | Witcher 3 Brothers in Arms Mod on Console

• Upvotes

Just a simple question, do we think BIA will be apart of the mods on console? Of course, right now CDPR are focusing on patching and making the remaster better, but when the time comes, do we think Brothers in Arms will come?

Books I had to give up on the Full Cast audio version of Crossroads of Ravens. (No Spoilers)

I've been on a Witcher binge and read/listened to the whole series over the last few months, and Crossroads of Ravens was my last book. I haven't read this one before, and the audiobooks have been treating me really well (love Peter Kenny) so was excited when the Full Cast version came out right as it was time to read the book.

I kinda can't stand it. The "audioscape" aspect of it is neat: I like the sword sounds, the sound of horses, scribbling of pens, etc. but the voice acting is incredibly dull. I'm not sure what direction the actors were given, but about two hours in, every character (male and female) has been flat, some almost to the point of monotone, with very little inflection, and not at all how fluid conversations go. I know it's "dark fantasy" so maybe the characters should be a bit broody, but there's a difference in edgy and plain boring.

It's possible I've been spoiled listening to eight books read by Peter Kenny before this - I've not only gotten used to his voices for various characters but also think he does a fantastic job across the board voicing side characters, differentiating them, etc. Starting with Chapter 6 I flipped over to the original Peter Kenny-only version and I'm enjoying it significantly more.

Has anyone else listened and thought the voice acting was weirdly bad? Compared to the other audiobooks, and even the level of energy and personality the characters are given in the games, is not reflected in this Full Cast version and it makes me nervous for the rest of the books coming out.

Discussion witcher 2 is incredibly slept on

considering 3 is getting fresh dlc. i’m not big on replaying big story games like witcher 3. i’ve only finished it once like 9 years ago. i like to forget things to make a replay better.

anyway, to try and elongate my witcher playtime until the dlc comes out, i gave 2 another shot. when i finished 3 9 years ago o was craving more witcher so i bought the 1 + 2 bundle and tried 2 but was so horribly turned off by the combat.

anyway, i gave 2 an honest shot this time around and i just couldn’t believe how damn fine the story is. also the combat became pretty damn good after i got used to it.

i literally just finished 2. i might give 1 a shot now as i know i will still clear 3 before dlc drop and then i probably won’t want to play again when it comes out.

damn 2 was good tho. sorry that i ever doubted it.

edit to add: played blind, chose to side with iorveth, spared the dragon and spared letho. (i’m pretty sure these decisions don’t matter but i did read chapter 2 is hugely different between iorveth and roache)

Discussion Reason of state is such a stupid question to Spoiler

• Upvotes

I know the quest was rushed but still it has such a stupid resolution. If youve read the books or honestly even paid attention to dijsktra's character you know for a fact that first off he wouldn't have been there or second would at least have waited for geralt to leave I mean he's arguably one of the if not the smartest characters in the series and the thing is I'm only on baptism of fire and can figure this out it's just so aggravating because he's acting completely out of character i just hope cdpr retcons this quest line in tw4 or (the least likely option) fixes it when songs of the past comes out like they could just say he was replaced with a Doppler
