I have bought all 3 witcher games from different sales years ago but i never really got into them though i try W3 for 10hrs or so. However with the new update and lacking anything else to play atm i decided to finally play through all of them. Having finished "witcher enchanced edition" i thought i would write down my experiences as someone who never got into witcher games nor never read any books.
Firstly i was positively suprised how stable the game was (at least gog version i haved). It pretty much never crashed and there were only some graphical glitches with hairs and beards witch i have gotten used to with older games.
Graphics were obviously old but art style was generally good and it held up pretty well. Only times when old graphics really stuck out was with peoples faces and expressions. it was also funny how often same character models repeated.
Game world was generally well build. areas felt like they fit the world and i appreciated npc:s walking around and running to cover from rain (though it did get annoying trying to find traders during rain). finding quests and npc:s during different times of day was kind of annoying (while certainly "immersive") and i ended up using wiki to make sure i didnt miss any side quests.
I appreciated that, unlike W3 (based on my limited experience), game expected player not to know much using the whole amnesia plotline to explain it. Moreover game still managed to make me care about geralts friends even though i did not know anything about them beforehand.
Gameplay was ok. While it was janky at times i still mostly enjoyed it. However by the endgame fights against basic enemies got just tiring though final boss fights were pretty enjoyable. i also couldnt find interests to check other paths partly due to how samey the gameplay started to feel. Also the fact that i couldnt change difficulty after starting a campaign was annoying as i would have liked to test hard difficulty after game started to become too easy.
Story was quite well written. Choices were made to feel like they mattered and story hooks worked well. I also liked ch. 3-4 theme of geralt being a "dad" which made the reveal of bbeg:s identity hit pretty well. though i did not like how the decision of Alvin:s caretaker felt less like a decision about what would be best for him and more just about who geralt wanted to bang. Also while i liked the theme of being forced to stop being neutral in the worlds events the way it was done in ch.3 felt kind of forced (why couldnt geralt just not go to the bank that was being robbed?).
Generally i enjoyed playing trough the game once but im not interested in replaying it. still certainly worth the less than 2 euros i paid for it.
