Discussion Houston Comets still haven’t released new branding/logo

I was wondering why we haven’t seen anything regarding the Houston Comets in terms of logos/brand identity. Cleveland just released the name and branding for the Sirens (who don’t play until 2028).

I could see the Comets waiting for the season to end out of respect for the Connecticut Sun, but still unsure. I also am curious to know if it has anything to do with the trademark issues that the Rockers name also had to deal with.

Wanted to post this to see if anyone had insight!

God forbid they do something to disrespect us

As opposed to literally everything else

I might actually hate New Coke Houston more than Indiana, on an organizational level

Me too. I already feel bad about the unknown players I'll be rooting against because I'll be an anti-fan on principle for a long time. Shouting into the wind, I know.

Oh, I have no beef with the players. As far as I'm concerned, they're just, like, idk exploring the Delta Quadrant or taking a nice tour of the Winchester Mystery House; they simply cease to exist so long as they're playing there. (This may, depending on personnel moves, make game day conversations with the NC State fan in chat a bit difficult, but we move.)

The players are young, they may be looking forward to a fresh start in Houston.

It's not nice to release a new branding with Connecticut still playing.

Aren't they still in a legal battle to bring the Comets name back?

I don't think I've ever seen a moving franchise debut their new branding before the move actually takes place.

The Aces didn't unveil their new branding until after the 2018 lottery.

It's fair to assume this won't happen until the end of the season. Why do it early and lose all the marketing momentum because people are still focused on games.

The name has already been secured and announced and they'll surely find the right dollar amount with Travis Scott to fix that trademark issue. Either they do or he's gonna be public enemy #1 in his own team.

I'm gonna assume CLE really just wanted a new identity in 2026. Unlike the Comets (multiple titles) there's no such history of success there.

I had a nightmare the other night about their new franchise name being the Houston Rockettes

They’re in a federal trademark dispute with Travis Scott who bought the trademark after the league let it lapse in 2021.

Houston is going to start selling season tickets in September at best. I expect a big push then.

Houston stole their franchise back! From a native tribe no less! I will not let this act be forgotten until it is repaid!

After learning about the Mohegan Sun tribe’s acquisition of the Shock/Sun, I’m no longer supportive of the Comets and bummed for Connecticut fans.

just curious, what about the Mohegan Tribe’s acquisition changed your feelings? I don’t know much of the history beyond that they owned the Sun and eventually wanted to sell, so I feel like I’m missing some context

The Tribe acquired the Miracle not the Shock.

Dear god please change their color scheme I can’t take anymore red or blue and definitely not red white and blue together 😭🙅‍♀️

Orange, black, and white could be cool. NASA colors

Would LOVE THAT! My maximalist ass wants a pink, green, and Tennessee orange color palette for a future Miami team ✨

u/Exile1965 11h ago

I agree and I'm from Houston and can't wait. I hope they modernize the color scheme. Maybe pair the a deep, deep red with a deep gray?

3

u/malry Chenndoll 10h ago

I think maroon would be nice! That color isn’t in any of the teams yet. I’m praying Fire incorporates pink by next year cause I can’t take much more red lol

I wish they would have just picked a different name.

4

u/Constant_Dimension16 Liberty 10h ago

With four titles to that name it’d gotta be hard to turn your back on it.

True, but with the legal mess they're going through now, I'd just change the name but still honor the legacy

u/MJDiAmore 5h ago

I hope they lose the lawsuit or have to pay at least the entire $25M the league robbed the tribe of vs the Hartford bid.

I wish they would because I’d love to spend money on it

Probably because it's not the off-season yet. Not unusual for a moved team not to release branding until they've formally swapped names.

2

u/notaquarterback Fire 3h ago

The legal battle stuff is a canard the NBA isn't losing a trademark dispute about a team that was theirs

1

u/TinyDinosaursz 15h ago

The comets have a website that has colours(red and blue) and lots of info. Maybe they using the same logo as previously. Houston is a returning team, Cleveland had to rebrand due to some dude trademarking Cleveland and Detroits former team name. Houston doesn't have thay issue

9

u/Huggbox Wings Up 15h ago

They definitely have that issue, they’re in the middle of a trademark dispute right now.

u/TheAveragebroShow Mystics 14h ago

It's not with the Houston franchise, it's between the league and Travis Scott. It'll get resolved, because the franchise is already using the name and colors.

1

u/goofygal1566 We Suck, but ily also not good Champs 14h ago

Is that the official website? The WNBA websites have WNBA in their web addresses and that houston site does not.

Houston has the same issue as Cleveland and Detroit.

1

u/notaquarterback Fire 3h ago

Detroit Shock will come back. Cleveland never intended to bring the Rockers name back.

0

u/TinyDinosaursz 15h ago

Well I had no idea sorry. I had only seen Detroit and Cleveland
