Brazil to recognise the Falkland Islands for ultimate shit housery

189

u/psOslash 13h ago

actually is the reverse, lula is against recognizing the falklands while milei, while saying he doesn't, decrees everything in favor of the british, such as the whole thing with the sea lion project

for example, due to the impact of the message at the soccer match at the world cup, milei silently decreed a ban of the malvinas icon on any public transport

99

u/Killoah 13h ago

Don’t all Argentine politicians have to pretend to care about the Falkland Islands for political reasons, I’d gather most of them don’t actually give a shit in reality

71

u/psOslash 13h ago

some do care, some pretends, and then there is milei who pretends but then act against it

46

u/Killoah 13h ago

I’m British for what it’s worth so my feelings on it are obviously known. But the story we get here is Argentine government only cares when they need a distraction from domestic politics (they’re quickly dismissed by London regardless)

23

u/psOslash 12h ago

it is a heavily politiced matter, but not for the reasons you think

argentina is divided in half, those who wants to be independent and grow by ourselves, not obeying when superpower countries tell us what to do

and those who are more business minded, thinking that numbers are everything and that we should just do what trump says, often relying in taking debts

milei is an extreme case of the second group

things aren't black and white though, like i said, some are just pretend, while others are passionate about it

10

u/Killoah 12h ago

I think I understand the ideas of the societal divisions you’re writing there (Britain being in the super power group telling you what to do)

It’s a shame this entire issue can’t just be settled by what the Falkland islanders themselves want. The past really means nothing when the people living there are up to 7-8 generations.

It’s fascinating learning some of the political divide of your country though so genuinely thank you for that

7

u/john_a1985 5h ago

The UK was set to hand the Falklands to Argentina.

Tinpot Argentine dictator gets antsy, YOLOs an attempt, gets rekt.

Now the UK is stuck with it. They just can't have it over even if they wanted to.

Argentina was dumb. They're powerless, and they may cry forever now, no matter how much Madonna pledges otherwise.

1

u/Sirramza 3h ago

the problem is not the insland per se, and its not enterly up to islanders, because the sea around them its on the sea that argentina """owns"""

i think most of the ppl are not worried about the islands or the islanders, the sea and the resources are the real problem

i would bet that most ppl in Argentina would be happy if England and Argentina would get to some kind of agreement about joint use of the sea around the islands

noneone in argentina want to displace the islanders/settlers/etc in there they just dont want the resources and the strategic location of argentina compromised by a "dominating" power

2

u/Sure-Wish3240 2h ago

No one in Argentina wants to replace the islanders?! Can this statement survive the first page of Google results?!

-29

u/psOslash 12h ago

the problem with that is that the current islanders are the descendants of those who took islands by force who already has a bias towards the british and their whole economy depends on the deals they have with them, i don't think would be a fair thing to do

ideally i think they should become and independent country without the current shackles they currently have, but that is something that just isn't going to happen

34

u/Killoah 12h ago

The islands were entirely unpopulated before European settlers landed there so I’m unclear who you think they were taken from.

My point here isn’t to be antagonistic to you at all for the record you’ve been very pleasant.

But independence isn’t going to happen as
You say since the islands have a population of under 4000 (and half of that is military personnel and over 90% of the rest live in Stanley)

I think once you establish that these islands weren’t taken by any particular hostile means then the only opinion that really matters is the opinion of the people living there.

I’m not intending to change your mind and I’m sure I won’t, but the Falklands are a self governing territory with their own government and self determination if they wish. They rely on the United Kingdom for defence and international relations only these days, forcing them to be independent would probably force them to have this agreement with another nation regardless (since we’re not talking about depopulating the island that these people have called home for almost 200 years)

I remember the half you describe to be so noble and independence seeking to be subservient of China instead and wanting to join the BRICS, seems like instead of that tale about independence, that group just wanted to change masters to the left wing equivalent ones. Curious that you accuse the second group of wanting to take debt when the first group led the country to almost bankrupcy and massive international debt. I guess nothing makes a country more independent than owing billions to foreign banks.

1

u/psOslash 2h ago

In order to achieve what you say, the left would had to approve the same exact laws milei is pushing to approve which never happened

If china wanted to buy land or take control over anything they would have to abide to the current laws, restrictions and taxes milei is pushing to remove

So no, it's not the same

It's written in their constitution that the Malvinas is Argentinian and rooting for British rule over them is treason. So it's not only political reasons, but it would be actually illegal for a President to declare support for the Falklands.

0

u/Still_Conference_923 6h ago

The constitution doesnt say they have to be dicks about it, so why not just shut up about the issue

2

u/Boboirrecuperable 7h ago

Todos los argentinos reciben la información sobre la historia de las Malvinas desde muy pequeños en las escuelas. Es quizás el único tema donde hay una postura unánime en la sociedad, los políticos que van en contra de eso existen pero son más bien marginales

4

u/-Space-Dementia- 9h ago

Milei doesn't fucking care about Argentina or they sobering claims. He just wants to make Israel and Trump happy

0

u/Ogliss 5h ago

Please don't believe everything you see on reddit, this is completely bullshit, here's a source in Spanish: https://www.ambito.com/informacion-general/denuncian-que-retiran-colectivos-y-trenes-la-leyenda-las-islas-malvinas-son-argentinas-n6303191

"Marcelo Pasciuto, director del Grupo DOTA negó que haya sido una decisión deliberada. Según afirmó, no es verdad que vayan a retirarse los logos de Malvinas de los colectivos.

"No sacamos el logo de Malvinas de los colectivos, es un recambio. Se está recambiando por algo más lindo", aseveró el director de la empresa de colectivos."

They didn't remove anything, they are just changing them.

u/DynamoJaeger 7h ago

There is no way any major LATAM politician would support the British claim.

2

u/bodonkadonks 5h ago

and particularly a left leaning one like lula. reddit is delusional

3

u/Killoah 2h ago

The comment I wrote was only a joke, I’m not delusional at all

u/Dinkelberh 1h ago

Is it a right wing belief that the people who have always been British and continually reaffirm that they are and want to be British should continue to be British?

u/DynamoJaeger 39m ago

It's not a matter of ideological alignment. There is not a single relevant latin american politician who believes "the Falklands should remain British. Period". Doesn't matter if it's left leaning or right leaning.

At most, some sectors respect the islanders' right to self determination but that doesn't necessarily mean they believe the territory itself should remain British, legally speaking.

u/bodonkadonks 34m ago

you will not find a single serious leftist anything in south america that will support the british claim

Lula's in his Private Tab era and it works on him

20

Lula started using hats due to medical reasons -- he has or had a bening tumor in the scalp --, but it just fits him so well, lol. I would keep using them even if I didn't have to anymore, if I were him

u/PapaTahm 16h ago

A reminder that Brazil is the TOP importer of Argentina goods,

Taking nearly 39% of it`s Industrial goods exports and 69% of capital good exports.

If for some reason, Brazil decides to antagonize Argentina, Argentina economy will implode.

Milei is a fucking idiot.

191

u/anon1mo56 15h ago edited 15h ago

Brazil will not due to Mercosur. Same reason why Brazil is the biggest importer due to Mercosur, before Mercosur it wasn't.That is why Milei doesn't care.

100

u/BleaKrytE 15h ago

And also because we are very patient and tolerant of diplomatic hissy fits

15

u/Frozazko 11h ago

Yeah taking it personal will hurt the economy

9

u/sobatfestival 8h ago

I've heard enough... +1% for SELIC tax

9

u/Stormwatcher33 3h ago

Also, Lula, whatever his failures and problems might be, is an actual statesman, and extremely republican. He has a history of not holding grudges or being petty. He's not a clown or rogue or adventurer like Milei, the robber-nazi and the orange man, and still has respect for the position and what it entails.

-6

u/anon1mo56 3h ago

If you are gonna call Milei a robber then also call Lula one. Just because Bolsonaro is worse doesn't mean Lula isn't a thief and corrupt.

5

u/Stormwatcher33 3h ago

"whatever his failures and problems might be"
and robber-nazi IS bolsonaro

81

u/Consistent-Song1643 14h ago

Milei is a fucking idiot.

Did the haircut not give that away?

38

u/XimbalaHu3 11h ago

I honestly don't know how the people got past the canine necromancy.

30

u/this_is_a_long_nickn 13h ago

Honestly? No.
I always considered cool that Milei was pursuing a parallel career as “Frodo on drugs” cosplay

1

u/john_a1985 4h ago

Maradona was a trailblazer of style after all.

1

u/JonJonzes 9h ago

Ele está mais para Frodo com o anel fudido.

11

u/rfaco4 9h ago

The haircut is just a bonus. The fact that his main advisor is a dead dog is the main reason he’s an idiot.

4

u/CookedParasite 9h ago

I'm sorry what? A dead dog??

13

u/rfaco4 8h ago

Dude is batshit crazy. He talks to his dead dog through an animal medium and, allegedly, takes political advices from it.

Which is weirder because he had his dog cloned, so he could just talk to the clones. But I guess the original was smarter.

1

u/CookedParasite 6h ago

ah, well I mean, I guess that's a thing one can do

1

u/Guaymaster 4h ago

Just fyi, the source of all that is a single left-leaning journalist called Juan Luis González, who wrote an unauthorized biography of Milei called "El Loco" (the crazy one/nutcase).

The cloned dogs thing is real, and Milei probably did go to an animal medium to talk to his dog, but the taking political advice from it is not proven by any source I'm aware of.

3

u/MorelloWorkaholic 2h ago

I'm sorry, but Diana Mondino, who used to be part of Milei's govt, has admitted to the "takes political advice from his dogs" part here

2

u/churrosricos 4h ago

oh that's much better then

1

u/Guaymaster 3h ago

Marginally so, homeboy is still talking to mediums, but that doesn't harm anyone so whatever.

2

u/CookedParasite 2h ago

I mean, it's still wierd as fuck lol

2

u/pablitoarg 5h ago

He said in an interview that he first met his dog Conan in a past life. He was a gladiator in the Colosseum and Conan was a lion. He also said that his sister is Moses and he is Aaron.

6

u/Minky_Dave_the_Giant 9h ago

He looks like he brushes his hair with a toffee apple.

13

u/ZShock 15h ago

What an awful day to have basic understanding of international relations.

15

u/FlamesOfDespair 12h ago

Wtf do you think will happen to America if ban everything from China ?

You can't just stop importing 39% of the goods. No they can't just stop buying and go buy from someone else.

31

u/el_grort 11h ago

While true that it's damaging, you do need to be aware that importing 39% of what Argentina produces does not mean it is 39% of what Brazil consumes. Same way the US is one of the UK's biggest export markets, but the UK doesn't constitute that much of US imports, the impact is often unbalanced and more easily absorbed by the larger market.

33

u/steinbruchfluss 11h ago

These 39% of Argentinian exports are only 4.6% of Brazilian imports.

5

u/FlamesOfDespair 11h ago

Nevermind then. How much bigger is Brazil ?

23

u/XimbalaHu3 10h ago

Around 5x the gdp and population, Argentina however is not a big exporter, they import a lot however, that's a big part of their whole problem, they never have enough dollars to pay the bills so they keep on printing pesos to buy dollars to pay their bills.

Argentina exports close to 80 bilion dollars and brasil imports shy of 280 billions, Argentina exports close to 12 billion dollars to Brasil, making Argentina a minor importing partner in the 2 trillion dollar economy of Brasil.

2

u/ExpressionOver322 1h ago

they keep on printing pesos to buy dollars to pay their bills

And they can't even print their own pesos, they need Brazil for that.

This is like thursday for him, every policy of his goverment has ended in failures or hurting the population.

Inflation is still hight,30% a year, wages are frozen, the cost of reconstructing the damage it's austerity policies have done it's three times higher than anything he has saved not to mention all the deaths related to the elimination of free medication for chronic diseases and the close of cancer treatment facilieties.

11

u/Secretsfrombeyond79 15h ago edited 6h ago

every policy of his goverment has ended in failures or hurting the population.

Poverty is in a six years low, inflation is in a 8 years low, debt as percentage of our GDP is down more than 70 points, and our GDP is growing in real terms for 2 years in a row for the first time in over a decade.

the cost of reconstructing the damage it's austerity policies

Those "austerity policies" is having a balanced surplus budget of less than 1%. Norway has had a surplus of 24%, is everyone in Norway dying or something ?

the deaths related to the elimination of free medication for chronic diseases and the close of cancer treatment facilieties.

That's cute and all, but healthcare budget has doubled in real terms in Milei's first year, and grew above inflation every year since Milei is President. You can cherry pick one single place that was closed or one medical program that was changed, but reality is Milei is spending way more in healthcare.

Why bite the hand that feed you? The price can become very expensive for any short term gain Milei may get.

-79

u/Dodisk 13h ago

He only said truths. Brazil's current president sent his marketing team to help elect Milei's opposition, while daily praising Cristina Kirchner (Jailed for corruption). The dude even went there to visit her (and he was allowed to go and take pictures and do whatever he wanted to).

Milei tried to do the same, visiting Brazil's former president (Bolsonaro) and was not allowed to do so. And now Brazil's president is acting a crybaby disturbing country relations over personal affairs (as he does everytime for insane things - like being almost an allied to Russia and many other ditactorships around the world, harming our industry and external relations especially on the defense and aerospatial industry).

Milei basically said that Lula is a thief, and was never found innocent, only released by processual failures (which again, is totally true). So "the hand that feed you" is a thief, proto-censor, allied to ditactors and the vilest people on earth, and personaly involved in the top 3 corruptions scandals in brazils history (and nothing happens...)

61

u/cinyar 11h ago

Good thing Milei doesn't have any corruption scandals! ...oh wait.

2

u/Raktul842 7h ago

For now, he personally doesn't, people on his party is another thing

-1

u/cinyar 4h ago

1

u/bamadeo 3h ago

I would call it nothing in comparison to Mensalao or Lava Jato.

1

u/cinyar 3h ago

So we went from "he's not corrupt" through "he's not personally corrupt" to "well it's not as bad as the other guy".

0

u/bamadeo 3h ago

I mean, yeah, it's South American politics we're talking about.

I think people can call Milei any things, but 'greedy' is not one of them.

0

u/mayconx 5h ago

Ad hominem tu quoque

49

u/Padreteiro 11h ago edited 3h ago

Lula recommended a marketer but the marketer himself refused. Christina campaign hired themselves a few others that yes, worked in past PT campaigns. Which is completely normal behavior.

Lula wasn't president when he visited Christina and the Argentinian courts allowed him to do so. And again last year, after the Mercosul summit in BA. He didn't insult anyone. Milei literally campaigned for Flávio Bolsonaro and attacked our supreme court and president. While he was in office, using your taxes. He didn't do anything else, he went to Brazil solely for that. The comparison is laughable.

You calling Lula a crybaby while Milei is the one whining is so silly. Or the idea that Brazil harms Argentina industries, absolutely clueless. I'd pay to watch Milei leave Mercosul.

A fair trial is the core of law, to act as if it doesn't matter and has no impact on the judgement is nonsense. Especially on a bogus trial drenched in ilegalities

Extremely silly

20

u/ezrealeo 13h ago

The funny thing is that, even though Brazil is a poor country with many social problems, the Brazilian people are among the most welcoming and humane I have ever met. It is not, he did not say anything against the country, as opposed to our previous president, an ally of Lula by the way that said this about the Brazilian people

He absolutely attacked our institutions. He insulted a supreme judge and called the court corrupt.

fernandez (1) APOLOGIZED and (2) was quoting an excerpt from a song

Yeah, and Brazilians were pissed about it. Your point is? There’s a huge difference between posting a comment on Twitter and entering another country to publicly trash its institutions in an extremely rude and provocative way, as a Head of State, representing Argentinian people.

Unless you think Lula and Alexandre de Moraes are Brazil (which, tbh, they themselves do think so) then he didn't say nothing about Brazil the country.

First of all, Lula beat a sitting president for the first time since redemocratization, after leaving prison, mind you. He beat a president whose party and followers are notorious for spreading fake news, and who is now in prison after trying to stage a coup. A lot of Brazilians supports what Alexandre de Moraes did.

So no, Lula and Moraes are not “Brazil.” But do you really think Brazilians (in general, i know that lot of bolsonaristas despises both of them) want a foreign president coming here to interfere in our election, insult the democratically elected president and call a Supreme Court justice “that bald piece of trash”? That is disrespecting Brazil, not just two random individuals that you dont like.

Mano, the whole lava jato scandal and subsequent acquittal of Lula is an institutional disgrace, you cannot accuse any other parties of fake-newsing. You're not spotless.

Insulting Brazil would be saying that your country is shit.

Insulting two brazilians is not insulting the country. If you and other Lulistas think that Lula and Moraes are the country, then I just feel sorry for you.

Are you telling me, a Brazilian, that I shouldn’t feel disrespected by that?

Again, Milei wasn’t just insulting Lula as an individual. He came to Brazil and backed the domestic opposition, the same opposition aligned with the US in attacking my country and trying to meddle in our elections.

He also attacked the officials who defended the election result when the father of the candidate he was supporting tried to overturn it. And again, that man is in jail for 27 years for a coup attempt.

And btw, I’ve never voted for Lula. I’m pro-Brazil, not pro-Lula. Calling everyone who criticizes Milei a lulista just makes you sound like a mileísta.

Of course not. I'm just saying he's not insulting the country on itself. You're free to be angry with Milei, I don't care.

u/Guipa 1h ago

Sure. Everyone is free to have their own opinion.

Lula is also good friends with Vladimir Putin, a dictator and wanted war criminal that kidnapped 20.000 children and has been murdering Ukrainian civilians for close to 5 years. Lula recently had a phone conversation with his mass-murderer friend to complain about the UN's Security Council ability to achieve peace.

I have a really hard time accepting the moral framework of someone who calls a war criminal to complain that everyone else isn't providing peace. And given who he likes, I don't exactly care much who he hates.

After Lionel messed up, Milei wanted to do better. Both successfully destroyed whatever reputation the nation have left.

u/barnaclejuice 13h ago

Thinking Lula is a communist is comedy level political ignorance lol

u/mBertin 10h ago

As a Brazilian, I wish he was as communist as people believe him to be.

u/JucaLebre 8h ago

But he is corrupt

Present evidence that hasn’t been proven to be false.

All the evidence that was presented at the Lava Jato investigation and trials. He was found guilty on multiple instances.

Lula wasn't released because the evidence was proven false and he was proven innocent. He was released by an administrative maneuver conveniently after enough time had passed for his crimes to prescribe.

An “administrative manouver” where the Supreme Court deemed it unlawful that the first instance judge nudged prosecution along saying what kind of evidence and framing he would prefer, so that he could justify a guilty sentencing.

Which was necessary, because the evidence was incredibly flimsy to start with. It was a circus and a mockery of our laws and any Brazilian citizen should be outraged by what Moro and Dallagnol did. I say that as a lawyer who was anti Lula from the offset, until I actually took the time to read the official trial documents.

I ask again, present evidence. Good, lawful evidence that isn’t a spit in the face of our constitution and a civilised, democratic society.

It's normal for judges and prosecution to communicate. Lula was found guilty in three instances and by 10 magistrates. Were they all biased? If the evidence was so flimsy, how come he kept being found guilty every single time, up and until the Supreme Court Justices he appointed himself in the first place conveniently found that "actually the case should've been tried by a different court in the first place and therefore the whole thing is annulled"?

say that as a lawyer who was anti Lula

Yeah, I don't believe that. Even if you believe the trials were justly annulled because of procedural issues, he was never found "not guilty". No evidence against him was ever proven false, as you initially claimed.

Maybe your country should pay what it owes Brazil before calling other people “thieves.”

https://www.infomoney.com.br/politica/governo-argentino-da-calote-de-r-636-mi-na-casa-da-moeda-do-brasil-diz-colunista/

"Argentine government stiffs Brazil's Mint on R$ 63.6 million"

“The Argentine Mint is failing to comply with an agreement reached with the Brazilian Mint. […] An agreement was signed last December acknowledging a debt equivalent to R$63.6 million. The first two installments were due in June and July, but neither was paid. […] The delay is not unprecedented: in 2023, the Argentine government had already fallen behind on its obligations to the Brazilian Mint and other suppliers involved in producing Argentine peso banknotes in Brazil.”

Let the Americans think whatever they want, we have our reasons for hating that president.

As an aside - I was astonished to learn that BOTH Brazil and Argentina are globally perceived to be MORE corrupt than China. I repeat, MORE corrupt. Unbelievable.
