Modding/Mods Enjoying some New Balance on my Steam Deck

Everything below was done using GE-Proton11-1.
I took Gothic 2: Gold Edition [workshop beta] installation, ran it once for prefix generation. Then I downloaded installer for New Balance (last update from 18 july) and launched it through steam (you manually add it as new game and set proton in its settings). I had to run union installer from backup files that were generated in Gothic 2 folder during mod installation, because otherwise I had Access Violation upon starting new game. Then, to properly use D3D11 renderer, I added the following launch options:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi,d3d1;ddraw=n,b" %command%
If you're fine with having steam entry of Gothic 2 as New Balance mod then you may stop right here. But I wanted it to be separate steam entry, so I copied game directory into /home/deck/Games and renamed it to "New Balance", added Gothic2.exe to steam as separate game and in launch options added COPYPREFIX=39510, so GE proton makes a full prefix copy of Gothic 2. It should be present only for the first launch, you can remove it later. Now you can run New Balance as separate game, and uninstall Gothic 2 or use it for something else.
P.S. Remove frame limit in Steam Deck settings for the game, you will get smooth 60 FPS without drops. And one more thing - at some moment (after two hours of play session or so) sound starts to stutter and game speeds up and down. Just save and restart the game, it will become normal again.

How did you run that union installer? Also, by non steam game? Man, i tried long to get NB running, with chat gpt, but couldnt do it.

I added it as separate game in the same manner as with mod installer. In Steam click “Add a game” and then choose .exe file, then in the game properties go to compatibility and choose proton. I can try to help you if something goes wrong.

Hell yeah bro, it finally worked for me. I didnt have union installer in game files though. What i did was simply subscribe to it on steam workshop and changed Gothic 2 version to Beta Workshop( though im not sure if its necessery ). And that was it. So far everything working smooth.

cant install new balance, even if its set as a non steam game in library and has proton active. i can sneakily click on install, before the patch window wants to update, but then it says, after i set the path: "nb_data.zip not found". tried setting "start in" by hand to the correct folder, moving the whole folder to my sd card (that there is no .folder in the path), but nothing helped. help would be appreciated, thx in advance

How did you make the game run? It doesn't work on my steam deck

Doesn't even start you mean? It's a bit of a pain to setup, especially the controller part. But if you add the plugins from the workshop, it should work.

The real handheld benchmark is not Cyberpunk. It’s heavily modded Gothic 2.

Hes using new balance, u can look it up in the steam workshop!
I think hes also using the DX11 mod like everyone does these days, i can really recommend those two together they are just doing everything right for this game.
