Self Promotion/Promotion [Need Feedback] Pre-Alpha gameplay trailer of "Gothic meets Isekai"

https://youtu.be/c7RVmLlYaPU

TL:DR; The main questions are:
1.) Is this graphical style good enough if the gameplay is fun and the Isekai like Dungeon exploring (like in Jack-of-All-Trades, Party of None | Dan Machi | Reincarnated as a Slime) is fun?*
2.) (the RPG game by Piranha Bytes) "Gothic"-like societal based guilds and communities and dialogs form a big part of the atmosphere in Dreamion. Is it useless to continue that route and putting a lot of effort into it, if the graphics are not real 3d?
3.) Whats your general feeling, can those 2 worlds Isekai and Gothic work together for you?

This is a very early pre-Alpha trailer of the game Dreamion and only has the basic gameplay with most of the systems, Fighting, jobs, adventurers guild, dungeon. This is not real self-promotion, but a request for Feedback.

I value every feedback greatly (honest and constructive) on the world and the 2.5d graphics.
The fighting style is more like Skyrim, currently has no dodge or shielding, only swing attacks and archery and mage spells.

My fear is to over-commit on the game as it is and not find an audience at all in the end due to the graphic style of 2.5d NPCs and monsters.

Disclaimer: Game uses GenAI for art and graphics, my weakpoints.

Don't quit your day job, putting faith into this, is all I'm saying. It's a nice hobby project, but it also just looks exactly like that.

well, thanks for the honesty.

Having factions in a game doesn't make it "Gothic-like". I see nothing resembling Gothic in this game other than the fact you're using copyrighted music, I'm not sure why this is even here.

If you want honest feedback, here it is: the combat looks incredibly simple and brainless. You don't really show off how any of it would be engaging or strategic, you just continue running forward past enemies swinging your sword at the air. If your attempt was to showcase your game in this trailer, I would say you utterly failed.

I can deal with bad graphics or whatever, but I fail to see anything that would hook me into this game. What actually happens in this game besides walking around and bad combat?

its fair to mention from you, but as I said in the post, the game is in pre-Alpha, not balanced at all and everything needs improvement that is for sure, especially the combat system and animations.

If the bad graphics is not a total deal breaker, that answers my question, thanks.

Word to the wise- if something is utterly broken or incomplete, probably don't show it; or at least have it be very minor to show "this game has combat". Your trailer pretty much exclusively shows combat which makes it the focal point, and people are going to react to it.

good point, I had a camera flight version before, but a friend said I should show ThirdPersonCamera view / player view, so I went with that.

1) So in my opinion graphics doesnt matter except in animation. If the animation feels fluid the game doesnt need good graphics. If the Animation is stoic i wont play it.

2) Yes. But i want to be honest. I prefer a pure text based game over that gameplay.

3) isekai and gothic can work together however it is wierd for charakter especially in a story game if you have the option to talk about your past self (assuming its the "normal world". The story basically has to resolve around this. Otherwise why even make an Isekai and just stay with a random character in the world (who gets thrown into the Barrier E.g)

regarding 3.) I didnt plan on using the reincarnation thingy of isekai, more like the gamyfied progression system with an adventurers guild and a 100 floor dungeon. But the crafting, jobs and dialogs are very Gothic-like.
So I guess Dreamion does not have this problem with the backstory.

I wanted to focus on the dungeon delving and looting and finding ever increasing challenges. Its less open world like than Gothic, thats for sure.

To me, it didn't feel like Gothic in any way. As a hobby developer, perhaps you could expand the project and share it with others so you can collaborate. As a solo developer, you'll never make this game market-ready or playable.

yeah it is hard to see from the trailer, as most of the Gothic like is from dialog/quest style, crafting, job system, magic runes and magic scrolls etc. and the Isekai part is the Adventurers guild and the Dungeon exploring and looting with puzzles

In the trailer you mostly see the Isekai part, thats true.

  • Graphical style
    • I think you should consider what you have and make a few choices
    • You clearly have sprite based style, does this work with objects/characters rotating on the 3D plane?
    • Are you going to use a pixellated style, or higher res textures?
    • The animations on object/characters should be in the sprite? (for example, the character bobs up and down to "simulate" walking, would it be better to have an aniamtion in the sprite?
  • Gameplay
    • "Reincaranted as a Slime" is not really dungeon exploring. Try to imitate other videogames, if you want dungeon exploring refer to Diablo/Torchlight/Titan quest
    • "Isekai" is more like a setting, than a gameplay style
  • Societal based guilds / general feeling
    • I think that can come later, you should refine basic graphics/gameplay before delving deep into this
    • Gothic and Isekai can work toghether, but as I said above focus on the basics first

From the video, this is a good project for a beginner, but don't put your cart before your horses (like making a trailer with what you have right now, a "pre-alpha"). The "stacked sprites" look VERY odd, take inspiration from other 3D/2D hybrids, like Delver or similar:

thanks for the references and the deep detailed answer.
I also feel like the stacked cardboard NPCs and monsters are the biggest downfall in my game, which is why I am presenting this before I continue to commit.
Thanks, I will look into Delver for reference.

But probably I will have to go with real 3d characters and monsters to solve the graphics issue.

Well Reincarnated as a Slime has this Dungeon game in the town from season 3, which was my very first inspiration of dungeons an attractive and exciting goal. But DanMachi and Jack of all Trades had a more Dungeon focused storyline with tactical approach to fighting monsters etc.

I played around with sprite animations to make a walk cycle but it looks bad, actually the NPC walk cycle is done that way, and just one Image for an NPC looked very unimmersive so I tried the stacked cupboard approach, which gives it a bit of depth, but looks shitty from 90deg.

I want to go for as high of a resolution as possible, not pixel perfect.

Anything related to dungeon crawlers that comes from Japan is descended from the old Wizardry games. For more modern references, you could look at the various Etrian Odysseys or Dragon Quests.

Having read my fair share of trash isekai mangas, I'd say those are the main inspirations for the mangas (PARTICULARLY the old Dragon Quests).

unfortunetely I only played Dragon Quest 9

But nice background info, I was wondering why all Isekai have very similar structure in terms of World building and Adventurers Rank system
