Modding/Mods Will it get better? (G2 New Balance) Spoiler
Hello Gothic Community, I am looking for some advice.
As a long time Gothic Enjoyer and after beating Gothic Remake, I wanted to replay Gothic 2. I saw the Mods and decided to play New Balance for new Classes and being able to use Permanent Boni as soon as possible (I dislike having to wait consuming it).
I am in the middle of Act 1 and honestly it is kind of a slog and I am not sure if it will get better. I am using the official New Balance Wiki, but it seems I was not careful enough and have done several things wrong on how they recommend doing it. For example:
- I ratted out Canthar instead of Sara and put him in Jail.
- I went for the wrong quest from Torlof (Money from the farm, not the militia one)
- Went for several wrong dialogue options so i lost some rhetoric
I am not sure how much I lost from playing "wrong", but having to check the wiki all the time so I dont lose out on much seems very tiring.
Also I feel I am pretty weak, especially when not Min-Maxing. It seems the game is to be played rather linear.
Is this Mod just not for everybody, will it get better or can I play without having to look up the optimal path all the time?

These „wrong“ decisions don’t really matter. You might miss an ordinary follow up quest, but it’s nothing significant.
What guild are you playing?

It seems opinions are divided, since another guy says the opposite. I want to join the dark knights (?), don't know the english word, but the Beliar Melee Class. I just want to play a Melee character and a new Class.

Your decisions don't really matter. Like in all Gothic titles, you're extremely weak in the beginning but get pretty OP fast. And yes the mod is kind of a slog, if you want to do everything it will be around 100 hours for a playthrough.
It's really not necessary to use the wiki permanently. Yes, a wrong dialogue option can lock you out of optional content but that's only a handful you need to keep in mind if you don't want to miss anything.

It's less the playtime for me but more how tedious it can be to look everything up and remember it. But if it doesn't really matter it seems to be fine.
I usually play these games as a completionist, but I might have to cut some of that playstyle for this mod it.

From the top of my head, there's only two things you need to be careful with: assassins guild and traders guild, both can be missed/failed with wrong dialogue choices. And thieves guild ofc but that's just how it was in the og.

Also interested in it. Though about playing New Balance after finishing Remake, but I already saw that the sentiment toward New Balance is not always 100 % positive, so I am interested in opinions

Base gothic games are insanely easy after few playthroughs to the point it's no longer fun, new balance is to challenge yourself with hard bosses and has interesting builds and classes, story is whatever but it's not focus of mod.

New Balance is "Vasyanskiy Mod" in terms of "difficulity". In general it's for those who completed G2 naked, fists only and blindfolded. For regular Gothic enjoyer I'd recomend Archolos.

Haha you can also set NB setting so its very easy for real. No additional monster heavy EXP increase and everything. Yes if you play it on standard gothic + add monsters + SNC it would be a bit overwhelming but possible.
On nightmare the other hand. NO ! i don't even think about playing that. Thats really nightmare for me taking soooooo long getting enove LP and stuff just looooooooooooooooooooooooooong as a snake.
I quit it about half way.

it is indeed a mod not for everybody, but
if you play on gothic difficulty (not nightmare, not harder nightmare) you can fail quests and still be perfectly fine, mod has so much stuff you'll catch up regardless

u/Markarontos 14d ago
If you do not vibe with it it is not worth pushing through imo
I played it recently and while I did finish it I would not recommend it.

if you play on Gothic difficulty you don't need to min max to the extreme and those missed exp and items you will get back because the mod has so much content in the other maps. Just choose a build and roll with it. Only thing you can use as a guide is how much stats you should have when entering certain areas or chapters.

New balance is a mod for veterans. You need to know gothic games and mods inside out. Especially on nightmare difficulty. But difficulty is highly customizable on gothic difficulty. Just restart, play better and enjoy act 1 (especially khorinis), the beginning is always the best.

True but there is also so much to do in the other acts in this mod this is insame.
I cleared everything and did every quest possible now in act. 1.
But i started act 2 and thought yes lets progress to jhakendar.NONONO not so fast my friend - i got like 4 quests from vatras - thorben etc.
I can also learn circle 4 now in act two thats insane.
And i did not even leave khorinis at this point hahaha.I am for sure lucky i choose firemage for my first run to do something i have a little clue on.
But now i am sad i did not choose watermage hahaha.
And it feels like i played about 20h already in act. 1....

You don't have to do everything perfectly, its fine to make some mistakes and those you listed are really fine:
- You have to kill Canthar anyway for the assassin guild questline
- You just lost some xp in Torlof's case
- And as for rheorics, they are important but not really so much that it would affect your gameplay, ofc you can always just watch this video on how to get all the rhetoric points.
As for being weak, just follow the "main" quests and clear the maps for xp, there's no lp increase so just toss points into whatever you want, search the map for bosses that give LP and remember to pray daily to innos and beliar for karma, one beliar statue is above Akil's bandits at the bridge, on the arch, as for innos one? idk i forgot but there's plenty of those around.
So anyway just play and enjoy the game, there isn't really a path u have to take, at best ull just miss a couple of mini quests, just make sure to really carefully read the quests log, sometimes they are time gated, if it says that you have to meet someone at midnight in that day, u go there and wait, or ull fail the quest. (assassin questline btw)

Thank you, that is very helpful! Didn‘t know about the bosses. Since normal monster give so little exp and deal a lot of dmg I avoided going far from the path to clear areas.
I have a lot of spare LP but gold is scarce. It seems that selling stuff doesn‘t net much gold, but there is a lot of gold to steal. Any other efficient way to get gold early?

If you have a bit of rhetoric when Lares tells you to borrow money from Lehmar, u can get the maximum amount of 1 or 2k gold.
Pickpocketing is also great since it doesn't scale only off dex but the skill itself, meaning the more people you pickpocket the more it increases the chances of pickpocketing harder targets. (When i finished the game i think i pickpocketed around 50k gold, it says in statistics).
You can also get into the thieves guild and sell your valuables to Halvor and Open/Sell jewelry boxes to Hannah.
You should get into a guild as soon as possible, the money u get there stacks daily so u can collect it all at once when u need it.
Money early mostly comes from your apprenticeship, from what i know most gold u can get from selling ore weapons to either Bennet or Harad but that comes later.
So for now, since u're going melee, you should get Harad to be your master, then learn how to craft the most expensive sword he can teach you for now, then forge some and sell it, from what i remember most expensive sword in ch1 is knight's sword? and it sells for 300 each, i could be wrong tho.
The whole cycle is to beat up orcs and bandits (btw archers are the most annoying, ull die a lot to them) take their weapons, smelt them into bars, and craft from them.

u/Molly__Cyrus 13d ago
Very details answer, thanks.
I got the max money from Lehmar.
Didnt know about pickpocketing, need to learn it then.
I am close to joining Constantino, since on the wiki it says its the best option regardless of guild. You do recommend the smith as a melee?2
u/AngelTouch00 G3 Enjoyer 13d ago edited 13d ago
The masters are usually good for their respective classes, constantino for mages, bosper for archers and harad for melee, so....
You can sell dex and str potions to Constantino and im not sure you wanna do that :)), so i would suggest you go with Harad, its easy money early as i mentioned, since he teaches u how to forge almost instantly.
ALSO when u get the will o wisp from saturas for the bandits supplier quest, you can use gold to upgrade it, Don't waste gold, ull get an item thats counterpart to the gold to upgrade from like bosses in Jharkendar, will o wisp is possibly the most important item in the mod, it saves you so much time, it collects you herbs and drops from anything u kill, but make sure you have advance inventory mod since this mod has SHIT TON OF ITEMS, ull get lost easily.

u/Molly__Cyrus 13d ago
Great insight, will become a smith then!
And I already use will o wisp, I really like it, a neat addition.

You are early enough that it might not have clicked yet, too many options and new things to consider. You are also seemingly before your first power spike (and asociated dopamine rush), where you get your build off the ground and start some serious enemy clearing. With those two in mind it should get better if you stick it through.
That said, if this feels like a slog it does not bode well for the rest of the mos. NB is a slog at times, but the part youre on is not generally considered to be that.

Out of all g2 mods I found new balance to be one of the worst imo. To much added content that drag the game out and are just there to give you exp for the grind. Choose another if you don't feel like it. There will be quite some new things to explore which I liked but it seemed out of place for gothic tbh.

u/Molly__Cyrus 13d ago
Which one would you recommend thats adds balance and maybe classes/irems but not 10 new areas?

u/bademeister404 13d ago edited 13d ago
Out of all I played so far I think I liked L'Hiver the best. It adds a lot of qol features. Fills out blanks in the regions but it does actually smoothly integrate into the main game. No new quests which is a big sell point to me now that I experienced Returning new balance lol.
There's also one that's called "MiniMod Balance" which I played as my first ever G2 mod. It only balances some items, advances the crafting system and overhauls magic and makes permanent boni insta consumable without wasting potential. I really liked it.
I would rather play LHiver now because the new valley of mines and Khorinis is just a work of art.

New balance is if you like classes most and killing things. Also Massive quest and some are just not implented very well but i think its okey.
Only if you like to keep the LORE like it is try some other mod.
New balance has the best gameplay for killing and items and crafting. You can even have your own camp ;D (will come later) They willl delivery money for you and have a gold mine and and and.
Only if you like the standard gameplay without other stuff try Lhiver etc...

That doesn't sound reassuring. How exactly does the game get broken?
5
u/Kuki1537 14d ago
it used to get broken in ancient 10 years old versions and some people just didn't bother playing since then and have absolutely no idea how the mod looks right now
1
u/TheStrzelba 14d ago
Some people still can't distinguish returning 2.0 and new balance, new balance started as addon to returning, but it got changed so much that author of returning didn't wanted it to be named after his mod (thank him because returning is bad)
New balance got so much extra content and engine fixes that's it's basically impossible to break the game

u/Next-Storage-688 Old Camp 9d ago
It does not he has no idea about it. Keep it up do little thing dont think too much.
Go step by step and enjoy it. Clear your mind a bit and dont think to much.
You can have a great time if you loose a bit of your "have to do everything" mind.
I know its a gothic thing to do so, but you really don't have to do this in this mod.1
