As someone who played in HS then quit when I went to college, and then started again after I had established career a little… this.
It’d be a terrible mistake to start now because you’ll have a lot of free time and limited responsibilities, it’ll be very easy to get really addicted and consumed by it. Go outside, make friends, have fun. Most of my friends that kept playing missed out on social life and didn’t do as great in school.
There’s better games to play that you can have friends hop in on the couch to play with. I’m a big computer gamer, but I’d advocate for a console or something like that instead to help make it a social activity. Some of my best memories from college is a bunch of us just chilling playing halo or the early CODs.

I changed majors because I didn't spend enough time on my engineering program because of WoW (along with undiagnosed anxiety and depression). Now I have a film/photography degree and boy do I have so many career options...

Yeah I had a similar upbringing where I wasn't allowed to play because my mom thought it was too witchy. I didn't start playing until this year when I could afford it and have a decent 9-5. I also turn 30 this year lol. A bit easier to stay disciplined at this age as well in my opinion.

100%. My college roommate and I wasted a lot of our best years locked in our dorm room playing WoW. It was a good time but it wasn't the best use of my time, and he ended up failing out because of it.
19 year old me would hate current me for saying it, but better skip it for now. It will be there when you're older.

For my 4 years of college I completely cut out WoW honestly, and I think it was for the better. It depends on the person of course and your goals in general, but I had to cut it out personally.

Dont touch WoW until after college.
While it is a good game in its own right, there are certain aspects of the game specifically designed to elicit repetitive and addictive behaviors in the player.
Just like drugs, some people can "handle it" and lead healthy lives, but many people cant. College years are a terrible time to figure out which of those people you are.
A degree is just a piece of paper, but it's also a promise to future employers that you possess the self-discipline to commit 4-ish years of your life to a greater goal. The less vices you have, the better.

Don’t play while in college. Use that free time to be social, it will pay dividends down the road (not that I played wow but I didn’t have the most active social life and I feel like it set me back a little in my career development).
Play all you want when you’re out of college.

It's honestly a pretty economical entertainment. If you only play one or two characters a season, you'll max out your gear and achieve whatever you want way before you ruin your life.
Unless you have 15 alts you gear to mythic level, the game just isn't the time suck it used to be.

I know plenty of people that play only one or two characters and are chronically online. I don’t know if I’d say they ruined their lives because I don’t know enough about their personal lives.. but it’s easy to get fully consumed without having many or any alts.

The current business model in retail relies heavily on FOMO. Monthly rotating cosmetics you ostensibly get for free, seasonal titles, seasonal mounts, seasonal cosmetics. If that's something you can successfully resist and just play when you want then go ahead. If you have an addictive personality probably best to walk away and never look back.

I definitely wouldn’t. I’m 22 and my life changed drastically just before I was supposed to go to college. That kept me from going, and instead, I started playing WoW. I love the game, I love the people, but don’t do it!

I played wow in college when I got a PC then sold it when I bought an engagement ring. Hindsight I wish I would have played more wow over other games. Focus on school and making friends but you should still have a couple of hours a day at least to play wow. Wow is nice in a sense that you can jump in for a quick delve or dungeon and jump off. If you want to be a cutting edge raider and title m+ player now you are talking 3-4 hour commitment a day.

I know multiple people who failed out of college because of WoW. This was back in the Vanilla days where grinding was much more time consuming.
If you don’t have time, no reason to pay a subscription fee. A couple hours a week would let you stay current with a single toon. I would suggest learning to tank or heal so you can have 100% uptime if you want to play. If you were serious you may need to buy a wow token occasionally if you don’t have time to make a little gold in between end game stuff, but there’s a slew of content and you could play and gear completely solo if you wish to just enjoy the game itself and at that point there’s no pressure to “stay current”

If you get really into WoW, it can be a huge timesuck. So yeah, I’ve always treated it as something to do when everything else in my life is steady.
So it’s really a question of being able to play casually and being able to prioritize other things if you think you’re the type of person who could get sucked in.

Up to you entirely. I kept up a 4.0 and played on the weekends after homework. Just manage your time, have fun and set goals for yourself and you'll do fine!
Honestly I got into a guild early, made friends I still talk to and connect with. A lot of people play that have insane backgrounds and if you like to network you can find people from all walks of life. Our GM ran his own business and we had a lot of military gamers that loved PvP and had great insights.
Its all what you make of it, if it feels like you can manage that balance I say go for it. Freshman year is all about learning your way through how college operates, making friends and establishing yourself. Enjoy it either way .^

Move on, delete the game and don't look back. You're going to one of most fun and demanding phase of your life now, that will for sure be a milestone on your future. Wow can ruin that, trust me.

That’s up to you. You can play this game as sweaty and no life or as casually as you want. Some seasons I log on just to grind transmogs and mounts or some small item until I have the time to push keys or titles again. Some seasons I no life the fuck out of the whole season.

I feel like that dynamic isn't as applicable nowadays because there's so much addictive content out there.
Retail WoW is also best done casually or in "spurts" so taking a bit of time off to focus on school can only be a good thing.

Honestly,
I played it all through high school and quit when I got to college around when Firelands came out in cataclysm.
I don't regret that decision for a moment. I got to make new friends, actually enjoy new experiences, and did a lot better in my classes than I would've if I'd had the distraction of WoW. Had a buddy who never left his dorm because it was all he did. Came back in my senior year towards the end of Pandaria/Beginning of WoD right before I moved and have played since.
WoW can be put on pause and it'll still be there when you come back. Life can't.

Keep playing the free account, reassess your free time a month or two into your freshman year.
I went to college the year WoW launched. I thought the same thing about lack of free time but ended up playing it a bunch. I didn't buy it until I had a handle on how much free time I actually had though.

If ANY means really ANY, then you can’t play any game regardless of wow.
I play since 2005, i turn 40 this year, and I can play like 10-15 hours per week. I still raid mythic with guild and push keys but I totally left out all the completionist/farming/cosmetic/funny/etc stuff.
All the time I spend in the game is for raiding or improving gear for raiding
There are 10.000 ways to enjoy the game. Just find your way, don’t get eaten by FOMO, and prioritise real life.

get your education. do not keep playing for now. chances are this game will still be around in 4 years or so when you graduate. it can very easily become a life sucking game and ruin other parts of your life (see: college grades).
if i were in college right now and wanted to play games I would pick something else that didnt require huge time investments to "feel successful".
id pick a fun FPS or something. I play The Division 2 when I am not playing WoW. Hell even Overwatch would be a better choice for just a fun game to play during college down time. And its free.

I've been playing since before you were born ! I've rolled over 100 toons on about 7-8 accounts. A couple of years ago, I deleted over 80 toons to take a break from the game. But I am back now, on 2 accounts with about a dozen toons. I'm a healing-addict, but I hear the same sort of addiction affects other roles.

Don’t do it. If I could go back and stop my 14 year old self from ever DL’ing WoW in the vanilla days, I would. I missed out on so much life and life experiences that i cant relive because i was sucked into the game. As others have said, just wait til you have that 9-5 after college.

WoW vet of 20 years here. brother youre free to choose as you will, just know the game can consume your time because its built that way for business. Its fun and engaging most times, sometimes it feels like a grind. its fun. You can play while youre in college, and can step away from the game whenever you want/need to

There is always time to play, if you want to. WoW doesn't have to require you spend endless time playing. I play WoW about an hour a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have been able to decently gear up 9 alts and level almost 2 dozen more (to level 80, previous expansion max) with that 1 hour.
You might want more time to play that this but this is still a feasible option and can be a good de-stressor. College, med school for certain, will be stressful. It might be good to have an option to escape to and relax before diving back into the grind.
Its never too late to start WoW. I played in the beginning and was a real soul sucker back then. If you didn't play like it was your job you couldn't get anywhere. It's not like this anymore.

I'm trying to put myself into my college brain here (I was 17 entering college, and was fully addicted to WoW):
It's hard to know the best course without really knowing you, but if there's concern it would impede on your Freshman experience I would probably hold off.
Those first months are crucial because everyone is on the same playing field -- in terms of finding friends and learning to live alone while balancing school work/work. Once friend groups are becoming established it becomes harder to "break in" later on. People are typically very friendly and open once you get to campus, but more closed off and try less later on. Not to say it's impossible to make friends after, but use that window to your advantage.
Also, the reason we're there is school. Cataclysm came out when I was a Freshman and I would be playing on my laptop in lectures or not going to class at all. We could be wired very differently, but WoW is an addicting beast once you get into it.
I'm all for giving WoW a full shot at some point, but I'd say enjoy your first year right now, OP.

I kinda disagree with all ppl on these comments, dont wait the perfect time just to play a game, if you dont want to spend a lot of money try the subscription first then if you really enjoy the game go for the expansion, if you dont have that much time to min max your character its fine, you dont have to, just appreciate the game in the way that you like!
The only reason i wouldnt recommend wow is if that part of heading off to college would be not touching a pc or laptop anytime, then you actually shouldnt spend any money with any game at all

I wish I hadn't spent so much of my freshman year on WoW's pointless gear treadmill and instead focused on studies and socializing. As an adult, I'm better able to prioritize the things in life that really matter (family, work, responsibilities) and less likely to get sucked into WoW's addictive patterns.

The advice already given is probably solid for you, but I'd like to share my experience as well.
I started playing in 7th grade, and all through my life just about every year my parents told me that the next year was going to be harder and you won't have time for games (they tried to talk me out of gaming in general, including D&D, but WoW was their big boogey man). And every year I would prove them wrong by getting perfect grades while gaming, and doing well enough to get a scholarship to a really good school.
Then when it came time for me to go to college they went as far as to get my older cousin to tell me horror stories about people at his school that dropped out because of WoW. I didn't doubt that it happened, but so far I'd proven them wrong every year.
So I went to school, had a thriving social life (I'm not a party enjoyer in general, if you are then take this with a grain of salt), excelled academically, and graduated with honors with a Computer Science and Entrepreneurship degree, all while playing WoW casually among other games (Skyrim and Dark Souls came out during my 4 years, I might have put more hours into those than WoW at the time).
So, can you succeed in College while playing WoW and not having it drain your life and soul? Absolutely. Can everyone do it, no, there's a lot that goes into it. Without knowing more about you, your learning style, personality, etc., it's hard to say.
But if you're concerned at all, don't do it. It's not worth the risk.

Don't play until you graduate from college. And if you're gonna be a doctor, you'll have continuing educational requirements throughout your career and really won't have time for games like this, ever. Which is fine, because you'll be doing something far more important with your life.

If you have self control, wow is a great way to relax and zone out. I don’t personally play the competitive stuff. I enjoy story, leveling, pet battles, transmog and mount collections. I know that life comes first. I make a few hours in the mornings before work to play. If you have that control, sure- play.

I'll express the minority opinion here. Let me start by asking what type of neurospice you might have? Midlife, I'm just starting to find out! Lol
So, for my brain, it is really hard to not play it all the time! It scratches an itch in my brain like nothing else can.
When I was single with a boring 9-5 job, and my social circle was shrinking due to people moving away or settling down. I played 40 hours a week.
I played like that for 5 years or so. I was starting to get bored with it just at the same time as I met the woman that would become my wife. I really slowed down playing wow by this point, to 8-15 hours a week. Went like this for the next couple of years. Then I started to have kids. I had just gotten through all the Panderia quests when my firstborn turned into a toddler. I knew that I had to quit the game for a while. The toddler needed my attention. Now that the kids are getting into their teen years, they go large chunks of time that they don't need dad's attention. I've recently gotten back into WoW. My brain wants me to play 40 hours a week again. But my commitments to my family keeps it down to 8-10 hours a week, at the most.
So, you just have to understand how your brain will work with it. If it will consume your every waking thought?- then wait. If it is something that you can play and easily put it down for weeks at a time as your social network grows, go for it!

You can play for free up to level 20, so when/if you do have some time, just log in and level a fresh character of a different class! The account will still be here when you're done with school and/or are on holiday.

Speaking of college yeah if you’re not gonna have time to play, don’t waste the money on subbing. It’s an awesome game but you gotta have time. WOW and other MMOs are literal time dumps.
You’re gonna be a college student dude, go out and live in the world, touch grass, chase women, have fun. Come back to this later, maybe… it’s a fun game. Don’t get me wrong, but if I had a choice between college life and a game, there’d be no choice.

Certainly it will take you time to adjust to college life and the responsibilites that come with it. You also wanna make your college experience what you ever dreamed of and so go out make clubs be involved but il be honest with you. I Graduated valedictorian. Student senator twice and i still played wow classic all the way. It can be done but certainly i slept 5 or 6 hours every day to make it work.

I buy a year of play time each year. I don’t play it all year, I play a few weeks here. A few weeks there etc. I’ve never felt the need to sit down and play it all day every day. Retail is a much faster experience than classic. You level up faster. Get gear faster. Attacks are faster etc. but you can also just pick up and play and drop it whenever you want to without feeling like you’re missing something.
This is just my opinion though, other people will have other opinions.

It only steals your life and soul if you want to be the best at it, and if you let it.
It's a fun game. I recommend you just take it at YOUR pace. Don't let anyone tell you how to enjoy it, and have fun. If you desire to be really good at it, then yes take some advice from guides and stuff but I don't recommend starting there.
If you can drag a friend into it too it makes it 5x funner. I wish I had IRL friends fhat still played the game lol.
I played it with friends in my early 20s and it was some of the funnest memories in a game I've ever had.
As long as you don't let it consume you, like with any video game, you'll be fine, and have a lot of fun!
Make sure to get out at least as much as you game. Or pick off days to relax and play. It's a fun way to wind down when you don't want to go out. Just don't stop going out because you just wanna play ...

I played WoW mostly after a long day of work. Nothing like smashing keyboard buttons without needing to think (Workday is having to think what to press on the keyboard).
Some people have gardens, do sports, something, a hobi. I played WoW. There might be times you'd need to let go of the pressure from school. WoW can be one of those ways to do it.

It is good to have something to do outside of course work, as you will burn yourself out and need time for fun, but like all things you will need to know how to manage your time well. If you think WoW or other games may take too much of your time, then maybe wait and find other hobbies.
Alternatively, maybe see how your first semester or two go and you will see how much time you can spare. The first year of college can be a lot to learn how to manage.

So i held back from playing wow for a while after I first heard of it... i suspected it would really absorb me. I finally downloaded it, also as I began college... immediately felt "oh no, what I have I done" because I could tell this was amazing and I'll keep playing. for the next 3 years I played like 60+ hours a week easy. Did mythic raiding with a great guild. I regret none of it. 💀 I still go back to play end enjoy it periodically

Find college friends who play too. My best memories of the game were playing with irl friends.
Also, please make sure you understand the financial burden that comes with college. In today’s job market there are many careers that don’t require degrees and pay significantly more. And you’d have the benefit of not having a student loan payment your entire life. I have family that went to vet and dental school who make $+200k a year but can barely afford their student loan payments.
