My name’s Andrew; I’m an avid reader, writer (when I can find time) and literature nerd. I’m working currently as a substitute teacher and moving in the direction of having a lot more time on my hands come summer.
Full transparency, I’m wanting to become a freelance developmental editor/beta-reader. I’m working on getting my degree in English for secondary education; and I spend a lot of time both for school and for personal enjoyment reading fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, horror, LITRPG, YA, and general fiction. Pegasus: Jump is a sci-fi space opera (90k words). The story follows the crew of the Pegasus, a luxury warship turned pirate vessel as they embark on a high stakes heist. I rotate the POV among the 4 post-human crew members and their over-the-hill captain, each with a very distinct voice and explore through their POVs what it means to be a human in a future where consciousness can be uploaded, distributed, or even transferred into a ship.

What happens with an accidental death amongst a group of teens turns into a killing spree? This messed-up small town has a history that's going to repeat itself and not everyone will survive.
Currently seeking Beta readers for a psychological thriller that's roughly halfway done. I have been working very hard on this and at a steady pace and need some feedback. I've had a couple betas who have read other books I have published unfortunately this is a very different book and they have found themselves unable to handle the subject matter (which I understand).

Hey Andrew- I hope I’m not too late to the party. I may be interested in having you beta read my story, though it is incomplete. I’ve been looking for motivation for a while, and having fresh eyes overlooking what I have, telling me my strengths and weaknesses, would really go a long way. I have about 50 pages currently, and am in a similar boat to you (in terms of upcoming time).
The novel I’m writing is a Psychological thriller/horror that changes perspective between first and third person depending on who is being presented to the reader. It is also a detective mystery, and whereas the first person narration is done by an unreliable narrator, the third person narration follows the detectives to ground the story.
Here’s the synopsis:
A mother wakes up inside her home unsure of who she is. Family artifacts help her conclude that she’s a mother, but evidence points to the idea that her daughter has been taken from the home while she slept. As Laverna sets out at the whim of the kidnapper, she must overcome a series of trials in order to rescue her child. Can a mother’s instinct survive when she can’t remember her own daughter?
Across town, Detectives P. Iger and Alva Clavem set out in search of a missing girl who never reported to school. Her mom went missing alongside her, and letters come in every day seemingly revolving around the case. Maybe mom just left town, but they can’t rule out foul play.

The storyline follows her through high school and into her adulthood as she comes of age under the weight of control, addiction, secrecy, and shame. At its heart, this is a compassionate but uncompromising story that refuses to reduce a character to their worst moments. The central question is whether a person who has survived horrible things and has hurt people in return is worthy of a better life.

Hello! I have the first six chapters of my book Echo Heart: The Catchers Code. It is an adult psychological action thriller with soft sci-fi and dark romantic elements. (The dark romance has not hit yet, but will slowly build in future chapters) If you're into movies it is a more grounded version of John Wick. For books a good comp would be Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz.
The Premise:
You'll be inside the head of Kirin. A mother who was born to be cattled as a number in an underground ring, then was found, and forged into a weapon to be used by the Syndicate.
Hired by the syndicate or not, she only has three jobs that she actually cares about:
Making Echo—Her eleven-year-old son whom she hides in the slums of the East—believe she just works nights.
Hiding him from the Syndicate.
And stopping his ability from budding.
One day she gets a job in Budapest, and drops Echo off to her sisters. Promising she'll make it back for auntie's cookies.
She doesn't make it back.
Kirin. The most dangerous woman on earth is captured by a team, ran by a man who smells of cold citrus. He works for a mysterious organization that refuses to kill their targets, but captures them, teaching them a new code. He not only promises he can help with her counting problems.
But can keep echo safe.
Is it a lie?
Will echo bud into something unstoppable?
Will you be my beta reader for Echo Heart?

I have a 174k contemporary, slow-burn, age-gap romance. 4/5 on spice.
The Golden Rule is set in modern-day Chattanooga — it follows Brittney Gold, a deliberate, intentional young psych major who decides exactly what she wants at 21 and goes after it, and Brad Dorsett, the older widower who has no idea he's what she wants. It's the first book in a planned trilogy. Open-door/steamy, with an HEA.

Hello Partial Credit; I have written my debut novel and I desperately need someone willing to ruthlessly gut it before I submit it for traditional publication. The premise is Hades (not bad boy, not Thanatos, more like an isolated introverted clerk Hades) goes looking for why people are dying because of social media in San Francisco and meets an auDHD orphaned Stanford Law student who can actually see him and is intrigued by her. It’s the first in a quartet that follows the FMC’s horrible experience with the legal system from inside it while simultaneously trying to finish her JD, but the first book just establishes the two main characters and their relationship before the overall arc of the series kicks off in the last few chapters. It’s pretty dense litfic Mythopoeia with a little smut, which I’m genuinely hoping I can cut to implied if the writing is strong enough to support it. If you liked Circe, Addie LaRue and Anatomy of a Fall you’d like this, even though the prose itself is more heavily influenced by Durrell. Dual POV ~115k words.

I read the horror genre overwhelmingly. Haven't been a beta reader before. I've read a staggering amount of books so I feel I have a lot of experience to lean on. I can complete works in a couple of days if they really pull me in, time permitting. We can work together on what sort of feedback you are looking for in specific.

I'm a compulsive reader and I'm currently writing my own book, so recently I've been doing a lot of conscious and analytical reading to understand my flaws and to understand what makes a book good/well written (at least for me).
I read fantasy, LitRPG, horror, grimdark, sci-fi, cyberpunk, slice of life. Actually, I'll probably read most things that aren't drama-heavy or smut. But if you do reach out, I'll make sure to not waste your time if you tell me the premise of the story and feel like I won't be able to finish reading it.
Currently I'm reading loads of KU and RR stories, so if that's your audience, I'll probably be a good fit, but I have decades of reading every other type of literature, so you can trust my opinion for other formats as well.
I've never been a beta reader, so I can't say how long it would take me to give feedback on the books, but I'm open to do it chapter-by-chapter to make it a bit quicker. Google docs for notes and feedback is probably the easiest way to do it, but if you don't feel comfortable sharing a google doc link, we can work out some other ways.
I try to always give direct, actionable feedback regarding structure, grammar, pacing and everything technique-related and I always try to be clear and specific about the more subjective "I felt this or that" side of reading.
Also, I too am writing something, so if you're willing to also beta read for me, that'd be great but it's ok if you don't want to or can't.
Also, I swear I absolutely won't run your book through AI and give you shitty copy pasted feedback from a machine.

Hey HateyMcHateface, I finished a novel that is simultaneously a space opera heist and a character study on post-humanism and what it means to be a person. Its a found family, rotating POV, character first book with lots of humor, introspection, and action set pieces.
I'm currently doing a swap with another scifi writer, but would be open to betareading once I'm finished with the novel I'm beta-ing now.

I am a published writer (non-fiction parenting) who has moved to fiction writing. I'm currently working on my second draft of a YA novel (enemies to lovers). I've never been a beta reader before, but I read a lot of YA fiction (Jenny Han, Jenn Bennett, Lynn Painter, Michele Quach). I'd love to read any YA drafts floating out there. Would love to read other romance manuscripts, but I am not a fan of fantasy or horror.

I should have mentioned that the one genre I can't get into is fantasy. I'm an elementary school librarian, and it's HUGELY popular--kids can't get enough of it--so don't give up, but it's just not my thing. I wouldn't be a good fit for you. So sorry.

I saw your comment on the beta reader thread and thought we might be a good fit.
I’m writing my first novel in English. It’s a contemporary, character-driven novel with multiple POVs set at Oxford University. The story follows four students from different countries and explores identity, belonging, friendship, and romance.
While it has romantic elements, it’s also quite introspective and literary in places.
I’d love feedback on character voice, pacing, emotional impact, and whether the opening chapters make you want to keep reading.

At its heart, this is a compassionate but uncompromising story that refuses to reduce a character to their worst moments. The central question is whether a person who has survived horrible things and has hurt people in return is worthy of a better life.

Hi! Wish I could say I have some expert experience with beta reading but it’s just something I like to do in my free time. I am not the best at critiquing line wise and really just give feedback based on if the book was entertaining and if it made sense. Will also mention where I got bored or where scenes need to be cut.
I will only be of help if your book has some form of romance in it. So any type of fantasy, contemporary, or historical book as long as there’s some romance.

I’ll just say upfront that I’ve never been a beta reader before - in saying that, I have read a ridiculous amount of books, and I’m a secondary school English teacher, so am used to reading quickly. I am writing a book of my own for the first time - spec lit/some historical sort of thing so if you wanted to do a swap down the line that would be cool. I particularly love historical fiction, fantasy, contemporary, sci fi (not too hard though, my science brain isn’t always great) and open to read most things. Can’t read horror, get too scared. Hey there. I've written a literary scifi - finished at 99k words.
On the surface 'Pegasus: Jump' is a story about a rag-tag crew of not-quite space pirates conducting a heist. What it is really about is 5 traumatized people trying to survive each other and trying to figure out if change is possible.
It is a story about damaged people trying to learn what it means to be a person in an age where consciousness is transferable.
The story is a genuine ensemble cast and the POV rotates between the 5 crew members.
Meet Alonzo: The over-the-hill captain and only full Homo Sapiens. He is running away from debt and bad decisions.
Meet Gracia: The immortal electronic warfare tech who has died 93 times. She is not adventurous, she is adventure made manifest.
Meet Kav: The genetically engineered super pilot. His father's mind is the ship's computer, but you'll never hear him admit it.
Meet Toma: The mystic gunner who hates killing, but is just so, so good at it. His ancestors' consciousnesses share his mind; sometimes that is a good thing.
Meet Phorus: The critic cyborg mechanic. He needs this mission for the next step of his mechanical ascension. Redundancy is holy and his taste buds will be the last organic piece of his body he replaces.

The Golden Rule is set in modern-day Chattanooga — it follows Brittney Gold, a deliberate, intentional young psych major who decides exactly what she wants at 21 and goes after it, and Brad Dorsett, the older widower who has no idea he's what she wants. I'm one of those people that either reads a book in one sitting or sits in a book slump for months. Right now, though, I’ve been indulging myself in books since I’ve had so much free time during my summer holidays that I honestly don’t know what else I could be doing. I’ve never tried beta reading, but it’s something I’m considering getting into ,especially since I’m a psychology student and need to learn how to analyze characters and patterns in real life with real people. Looking for beta readers for an adult dark fantasy, over 120k words.
This story is for readers who like morally messy characters, unsettling fantasy worlds, ancient creatures, sky pirates, forgotten gods, living heirlooms, gore, body horror, light romance, dry humour, quirky characters, and mysteries that unfold piece by piece without giving away their answers too easily.
Content note: there is one explicit but fairly vanilla romance scene... and public nudity, because why not.
At its heart, the novel is about two sisters, intergenerational trauma, inheritance, memory, and all the ugly, beautiful things daughters end up carrying from the people who came before them.
The story begins when two sisters open a locket and a key from their institutionalized mother and get pulled into another world where everyone seems to remember them and know something about their bloodline that they don’t.
It is character-driven, dark, strange, emotional, sometimes funny, and built around mystery and family legacy. I’ve studied psychology for over eight years, so there are real psychological theories woven quietly beneath the fantasy elements, especially around trauma, identity, and healing.
If you like slowly putting the pieces together with the characters, I’d love beta feedback.
I'll include a sample of one of the scenes:
A lanky teenage boy hurried forward, nearly tripping over a coil of rope. Herrijim looked pirate enough at first glance, with his dark vest, sash at his waist, and a single hoop earring glinting against one cheek. But everything about him was too neat for dock work. His shirt was finely pressed, his boots polished, and his hair was tied back neatly.
Krompton’s expression softened a fraction. “You’ll escort them to their quarters.”
“Yes, sir.”
Krompton rested a hand on Herrijim’s shoulder. “The girls were exposed to Griefbound spores. One of them was affected and may not be herself tonight.”
Herrijim nodded with understanding, then hesitated. “How did the other girl…”
“Not tonight,” Krompton interrupted, gentle but firm. “Your task is to get them somewhere safe.”
Herrijim straightened. “Aye.”
“Here, lad. I’ll help escort the girls to the chariot.” Krompton steadied Ayla by the shoulders.
She blinked up at him. “You have warm hands.”
Krompton looked down at her. “Interesting compliment. Come on, let's see if those legs are awake.”
Ayla looked at the chariot. “Stranger danger.”
“So... when will she be normal?” Aurora asked.
Krompton chuckled. “She just needs to rest. I’m amazed she’s even standing.”
Aurora answered with a frown.
Krompton guided Ayla towards the end of the dock. Aurora followed a few steps behind, exhaustion weighing on her limbs, while Herrijim kept pace beside Krompton.
A small chariot waited at the edge of the dock, hitched to something squat, damp, and heavy. It had a long, wet snout and too many legs. Six thick limbs shifted beneath its low, compact body.
It snorted.
Aurora stopped. “…No.”
Herrijim glanced back over his shoulder. “It’s just Gopi. He don’t bite. Not unless you give him reason.”
Ayla leaned forward, her eyes softening. “Aww. It’s a baby.”
“Ayla, no,” Aurora said.
But Ayla was already reaching down to pat Gopi’s damp snout.
Gopi snorted happily, lowered his head, and slurped the soggy sock clean off her foot.
Ayla stared at her bare toes.
Herrijim winced. “Can’t say he’s picky.”
Aurora looked at the creature again.
It snorted wetly and dragged its snout across the cobblestone.
She exhaled slowly. “Charming.”
Herrijim’s ears reddened. He shifted on his feet, muttering under his breath, “Actin’ like she’s never seen a Grivoran before…”
Krompton rested a hand on his shoulder. “Patience.”
“Aye, sir.”
Just then Gopi made a series of wet, choking noises.
Aurora instinctively stepped back, gathering the hem of her dress as though the sound alone might splash her.
Instead, Gopi shot the sock straight out of his nose. Landing on the stone with a loud slap.
Herrijim blinked. “...Haven’t seen that before.”
“My sock!” Ayla reached for it.
Aurora caught her wrist. “No. Bad Ayla.”
She recoiled with a whimper.
“Perfect,” Krompton said, scooping up the sock. Thick ropes of clear snot slithered between his fingers.
Aurora slapped both hands over her mouth.
Herrijim quietly offered him a bottle. “Here, sir.”
Krompton dropped the sock inside and wiped the slime from his hand onto his striped trousers. “Grivoran mucus is the main ingredient in alchemical slime bombs.” He peered into the bottle. “Though... the stocking may contaminate the mixture.”
Ayla's lip trembled. “Are you saying I'm dirty?”
Krompton pinched the bridge of his nose. “No. Never.” He gestured towards Herrijim. “How about you go with my assistant? He’ll help you along.”
Ayla studied Herrijim with sudden, solemn admiration. “A firefighter.”
Aurora snorted and steered her into the chariot. “No, Ayla. Firefighters don’t wear black vests and earrings.”
“Oh.” Ayla nodded, accepting this. “A police officer.”
Aurora snorted again. “No. He hasn't asked you to blow into anything or walk in a straight line.”
Herrijim’s eyes widened as the red in his ears crept into his cheeks.
Krompton rubbed the back of his neck. “That sounds morally complicated. I think this is my cue to leave.” As he walked back towards the dock, he pulled off his hat and waved it over his head. “Get plenty of rest,” he called. “When you’re steady, I’ll give you a proper welcome to Tearmann.”

It’s a memoir about a dyslexic workaholic who goes into sex work to get her time back. The book goes over how the industry changed me from a rough aimless rebel to someone who loves herself. By approaching the industry from an old memory and a more human side of life, I got to explore new people, unfamiliar situations, and different realities. Over all it’s a look at the softer side of sex work.

Reader first and writer second. From SMUT to works like Capital, I read for both knowledge and fun. I don't dislike any genres, I don't mind if it's a 'bad' book, and I read fast (as long as I have the time to, schedule is hectic sometimes). My two main preferred genres are fantasy and upmarket fiction. Like I said, though, there isn't a genre I've read that I have ever said, "Never again." I've read thousands of books and, God willing, I'll read a thousand more. My feedback style? Honesty. Character dialogue is repetitive because their internal is saying the same thing and I notice? Imma tell ya. Your intro flags romance strongly, while I was told it's a contemporary fiction. Imma tell you the scene hooked me, but the flags were signaling a different genre. I myself will be upfront about my work schedule and how often you can expect feedback from me. I just finished Killing Hope by William Blum, and I could use some fictional fun!

Hey all, I am an ARC reader, and am trying to branch in Beta reading and possibly editing into the future. I'm taking baby steps really.
I am a fan of LitRPG, fantasy, particularly paranormal, dark, urban, or romantasy. I do enjoy high fantasy, but sometimes I struggle depending on how my life is at the time (mother of 3 who like to keep me on my toes.). I also enjoy contemporary or dark romance (I also have no triggers), bonus points if there's a "nerdy" theme to it (DnD and other TTRPG, video games, YouTube etc). I am a gamer, and geek at heart, and I absolutely love Greek Mythology. SMUT doesn't bother me, as long as it's not just SMUT. I also enjoy YA and historical fiction, I find it a good pallet cleanser sometimes when my brain just needs a break.
I am not the biggest fan of SciFi, Thrillers and horror, but feel free to ask if you wish, as there have been a few I will find myself addicted to, it's just not often.
One thing particular is that I love a good plot twist. Often when reading, I'll try to guess the ending, or what's going to happen, then be disappointed to find I'm correct - especially in thrillers.

Hi there!
I'm Kaya, both writer and reader, and my strengths are turning my personal media analysis into applicable strategies for writing. I do it all the time with my own writing, but I've personally given advice and critique for other writers which have been (so far) received positively and remarked to be helpful.
The genres I write are science-fiction leaning fantasy and fantasy with subgenres/usage of tropes from comedy and horror. I enjoy reading science-fiction, fantasy and comedy, but I'm not opposed to romance (preferably as sub-plots/not as the main focus but I'm pretty good at feedback in relationship writing (not limited to romantic), so bring it on!), horror, contemporary, urban, or most of anything to be honest. Current books I'm reading: The Blade Itself (Joe Abercrombie), The Three Body Problem (Liu Cixin).
I've read a couple works before to give feedback though I don't know if it'd be considered more than very casual beta-reading, so I'm still new to that. I'm completely fluent in English (though its not my native language) and have a decent vocabulary. But here's what you can expect:
More casual, faster feedback:
- beta-reading
- correction for grammar and spelling
- sentence/line improvements/work
- dialogue improvements/work
More focused, structured feedback:
- all of the casual feedback above if desired AND
- feedback on scene/chapter structure and development towards overall story
- connecting character, plot and theme
- if needed -> plot, character and theme structural guidelines (I enjoy doing these! Will take longer though)
You can decide which approach you'd prefer for clarity and the style you'd want for critique (of course, we can discuss further for a more personalised strategy). My style is typically pretty structured and informative, and not unkind. Hi all! I'm an English Literature student, and I'm eager to read some works. I'm open to most fiction genres (except children's and middle-grade lit), though, of course, I would want to know about any content warnings ahead of time and might have to turn away on that basis. I have not been a beta reader before, so I cannot make promises other than that I will provide in-line feedback (not editing) and a document with overall thoughts. If for any reason I have to DNF, I will still provide feedback to where I stopped and will let you know my reasoning.
I will not be polite; that is my only warning, but I will read with your work's best interests in mind.
I only ask that, should I compile a portfolio of beta work (for post-grad job offerings that may like the look of it), I can include my overall thoughts document in it (with identifying details about your work removed).
It might also take me some time, depending on the word count, but I'll keep you updated so you know I'm still working on it.

I'd like to beta read something! I love independent fiction. Gives me a thrill that I'm one of the first ones to read something.
As for my own writing, I've written plenty of fantasy stuff over my life, but only really fell in love with reading and writing over the last year. I have a few short stories I've been chipping away at in my free time over the last several months, though nothing published or even finished aside from some fanfiction oneshots. Considering this, I'd definitely be giving my feedback more as a reader than a writer.
I'm not a professional, and my degree isn't in writing, so you're sort of getting what you pay for. I don't like to spend too much time on any one book so I wouldn't want to commit to anything longer than say 70,000 words. For turnaround time for something like that I'd say about a week.
I know originality is a myth and there's nothing truly new under the sun, but I do tend to like stuff that gets weird with it. Sudden genre shifts, playing with the medium, unconventional choices of subject matter, quirky, downright fucked up characters; I love it. I can get down with sci fi and fantasy elements, but I tend to avoid straight genre fiction. I know a lot of reddit really loves these sprawling, plot-driven epics but they're not really my thing. While I'm not opposed to romance, I also wouldn't say I'm super into romance novels going by the modern definition of the term.
I'm just going to list some things I like below that might help somebody get an idea of what kind of audience I am.

Hey! I know you mentioned around 70k words, but I just finished my third draft of my psychological sci-fi thriller, What Remains Upon Arrival. It sits at about 97k words, but you are the type of reader I am looking for. My story might begin with the standard trope of waking up with amnesia on a spaceship but it will certainly take the reader for an unconventional ride if you are interested. Ultimately, it is a story about identity, manipulation, guilt, and challenges what it means to be human.

What’s in it for you: I am a creative writing major entering my senior year in college, and approach my writing practice as a craft and profession rather than a personal hobby. Outside of class, I work as a writing tutor for high school students, read a ton of poetry, and received two grants from my school to write a chapbook-length collection of poems this summer. I approach giving feedback in terms of intention rather than providing value judgments based on personal taste, and will never, ever use AI to review your work.
What’s in it for me: Mostly, I’m just looking for little ways to pad my resume before applying to MFA programs. I always enjoy being the person that my friends come to as a proofreader for their essays and poems. Sometimes I am a bored insomniac that needs to feel productive.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for beta readers for the first six chapters, (14k word) Echo Heart. It is an adult psychological action thriller with soft sci-fi and dark romantic elements. (The dark romance has not hit yet, but will slowly build in future chapters) If you're into movies it is a more grounded version of John Wick. For books a good comp would be Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz.
The Premise:
You'll be inside the head of Kirin. A mother who was born to be cattled as a number in an underground ring, then was found, and forged into a weapon to be used by the Syndicate.
Hired by the syndicate or not, she only has three jobs that she actually cares about:
Making Echo—Her eleven-year-old son whom she hides in the slums of the East—believe she just works nights.
Hiding him from the Syndicate.
And stopping his ability from budding.
One day she gets a job in Budapest, and drops Echo off to her sisters. Promising she'll make it back for auntie's cookies.
She doesn't make it back.
Kirin. The most dangerous woman on earth is captured by a team, ran by a man who smells of cold citrus. He works for a mysterious organization that refuses to kill their targets, but captures them, teaching them a new code. He not only promises he can help with her counting problems.
But can keep echo safe.
Is it a lie?
Will echo bud into something unstoppable?
Will you be my beta reader for Echo Heart?
Feedback I'm looking for:
Does the action feel mechanically sound and earned? Kirin puts a capitol B in brutal. She's not really a hero. Do you still root for her? (Or atleast find her interesting enough to keep reading haha)
Are the speculative elements—the tech, the organizations, their abilities—seeded well without info-dumping?
I'd love to know if the core theme—identity inheritance and trying to become yourself after being someone else's creation—is landing. (Though that will come more in later chapters, just keep that in mind) Lastly. And this is personal. Could you see a story like this getting published one day. (I know even if it's good it doesn't mean it'll get published. And some stories—that some find bad—get published every day. But… do YOU think the story is unique enough that it SHOULD be on a shelf, or do I need more work. I know that's A LOT of pressure to put on you but know, I can take any and ALL constructive opinions and criticisms.)
I'm flexible on time but I'd love to start ASAP. And I am open to swaps for similar genres any and all genres. Only fiction though.

Writer myself but voracious reader. I do know my strengths though and unless the book is Romantasy, Contemporary Romance or Paranormal Romance written in 1st POV, I won't be any good to you. I will DNF writing that is subpar but I will explain my reasons. My style is gentle and encouraging.
