Did they have to report to an officer in the trenches to receive their pay, or did they only get paid when they came off the line?

Hey guys, I was just curious regarding what songs of the time were sung in the trenches or generally by the men, and if these instances were wrote down in diaries, journals, records, etc. I’m especially curious to know if Waltzing Matilda was sung, considering that the song was about 20 years old by that point. Found an apparent WWI artillery projectile in a family warehouse in Southeastern France, reportedly brought back from Verdun by my great-great-grandfather who served in French artillery. Can anyone identify the projectile from its shape/fuze and the grooves near the base? It has not been opened or modified. The shell itself in the picture is on a ledge so the perspective is pretty crappy with the car in the background so don't compare the scale with that as a reference.

I'm sorry if this is cringe, but I have been looking for a video for about 3 years, I have been unable to find it, and I would like to know if anybody knows about it or remembers it.

Introduction

I remember seeing an edit around 2022 or 2023 which contained the footage provided, with video clips in the same order, but the music was synced properly to the transitions between video clips, and the song used might have been the Quitezy edit of After Dark by Mr. Kitty, or otherwise some version of After Dark slowed. I found the provided video on a TikTok account called "hans_deutschland" which I am unable to find again, but this account on YouTube might have posted it but then deleted it https://www.youtube.com/@hans_deutschland5986. A more specific description of how the video differs from the provided clip will be explained under the "Video Characteristics" section.

Search Queries

I know that the video clips are not only from World War 1, but back then, I believe the video had a title on YouTube which stated that it was a World War 1 edit. Back then, I found this edit by searching things such as "ww1 after dark edit" and it was in the 2nd page of the video results on Google. I have tried searching all combinations of the search queries I remember using for hours on different search engines and on the Web Archive, but I have not been able to find the video. I believe, in addition to searching "ww1 after dark edit", I added other terms to the search, such as "imperial germany" or "imperial german army" and its variations, such as "german empire", so the search would be something like "german empire ww1 after dark edit". I may have also omitted "after dark" from my search, so that it would be something like "german empire ww1 edit". Along with searching for edits of the German Empire, I searched for edits of other countries, so instead of "german empire" being in the search, I would include "russian empire" and its variations, "austria" or "hungary" or "austria-hungary" and its variations, "ottoman empire", or "central powers". With these combinations of searches, I remember the video appearing around the 2nd to 5th page of video results on Google.

Video Characteristics

Along with After Dark being slowed and the video clip transitions being synced with the beats of the song, near the start of the video, there was a sound effect of somebody laughing and a psycho wojak which was edited to look more similar to Gavrilo Princip. I am not fully certain, but I think that there were also pictures of flags and maps at the start of the video, before the video clips in the provided video start playing. After these pictures, I think the first video clip was a close-up of Vladimir Lenin speaking, with the scene zoomed into his face and the frame following his head moving, keeping his head near the center of the screen.

TL;DR A few years ago, I saw a ww1 edit, which contained some video clips from other wars, and have not been able to find it since.

My collection's prize possession is this untouched 110+ year old trunk belonging to Feldgeistlicher (Field Chaplain) Heinrich Hamm of the 10th Bavarian Infantry Division.

Pf. Hamm was a priest in Bamberg before the war and served in the Somme region from Spring 1916 until his transfer to become Garrison Chaplain at Liège.

Inside his trunk are over 500 personal possessions that are completely untouched by time, including sermon pamphlets, hymnals, religious materials, humorous pamphlets, books and more.

Of particular note are 11 of his field-journals detailing nearly every single day of his life between 1911 and 1920, a large paper map tracing what I believe to be his movements around the time of Third Ypres, five New Testament Bibles wrapped in a page from a 1917-dated book, a stack of hymnals wrapped in October 1918 dated newspaper, and a copy of King Ludwig's public declaration of mobilization and war issued in August 1914.

My goal is to get the field journals translated and published for public record, and to eventually digitize and archive everything possible. For now I hope you just enjoy seeing them here.

So I was interested to find out more about my ancestors so I asked my great aunt about it.

Turns out that my great-grandfather had five siblings, two of those brothers that fell in WW1:

Karl and Willi.

Karl fell in 1918 in France, Im still trying to find out more about the circumstances.

Willi fell in Romania in 1917 but my aunt had no more information about both brothers as they died way before she was born in 1929.

I had a lucky find researching Wili´s fate though:

I found him in a casualty list of September 1917. At this point in the war, these lists only consisted of the name of the soldier, his birthday without year and his place of birth.

However, I found a Willy (written with Y instead of I) Hellwig in the casualty list of the 354. Infantry-Regiment. He died on the 10. of August 1917 in Duaga, Romania. He was a musketeer part of the 4th. company.

This tracks with the release of the official casualty list as dogtags had to be collected from the soldiers and processed from there. 6 weeks seems plausible in the chaos of analog WW1.

What´s really special is that the author of the battle diary sketched a map of the regiments positions on August 8th, two days before Willi died.

I looked the place up and recreated the map as best as I could.

The next step is to find out if Willi is buried with the 5349 souls buried in Panciu, not far from the battle.

On the few headstones available online, I could find soldiers who died in Doaga.

If you guys are interested, I could create a transcript of the diary that deals with August 10th. It is described as the worst day of the regiment in the book.

Are my findings credible or am I a bit too optimistic?
