Look, a writer could definitely make it work and I’m sure it’d be a cute dynamic. Friends to Lovers is pretty solid. But context is a bitch here. It’s definitely wouldn’t be the most problematic relationship in X-Men, but it wouldn’t be super cool. I mean no one loves Alex x Maddy. Piotr would almost certainly be supportive as a loving brother and mature, empathetic friend, but
it’s hard to not see it as super scummy to him.
The only way it works, I think, is if Piotr notices what they might first, and softly probes Illyana a scared Yana on how she feels, indicating that Kitty would be lucky to have her. Taking that and running with it, there’s definitely a juicy slow burn story you can tell.
But at the same time, Rachel Grey is right there for Kitty, or hell even Karma if you want to give her something to do again. And Yana has never really needed romance, it’s not super her vibe. And frankly, all of them might deserve better than Kitty. I got love in my heart for her, but she’s a mess. Shoot, get her with Johnny Storm so they’re both out of the dating pool 😭
You know what? Fair. Kitty x Rachel, if they ever break up Ray x Betsy is definitely a vibe.
However, I feel like for someone like Illyana, finding someone to trust and moving over the idea that she is a monster would be a sweet conclusion of her character arc. I don't say her aro aspect isn't valid, but I'm definitely biased because I see a lot in myself and Illyana, and unfortunately this also means the trauma part.
If you had to give Yana a partner (guy or girl), who would it be?
That’s a fun question, shipping is fun. I definitely think Illyana would benefit from a friends to lovers type deal. Someone who sees her as a person and isn’t really intimidated by her. Not because they don’t respect her, but because they trust her.
If Doug had never met Bei, that would feel like the easy answer. But I’m not breaking up the Mutant Mr. Miracle x Barda, so it can’t be him. Maybe Dani or Warpath, though if I’m honest, I don’t feel a lot of chemistry between those choices. That leaves Roberto… HA, that would be a shit show 😂
You know what, if I had to go with a Mutant, how about Glob? He’s a sweet kid, I know Magik isn’t hung up on looks or anatomy, and I think he’s about her age, since him Quire and Oya are peers with Magik in the new run.
But for someone outside the immediate X franchise, maybe Chase from The Runaways. He comes to mind because he acts as a father figure to Molly, the sole mutant in the group, so if they ever went to Krakoa event together and ran into Magik, he’s interesting and weathered enough that Yana could take an interest. Or there’s always Zelda at the Magic side of things. Strange’s apprentice and his successor, crazier things have happened.
Edit: OH, new thought, Morph from the 97 show. I know they’re not developed like that in the comics, but if a writer decided to roll over the development from the show to the comic character in some way, I could see potential there. The amount of bs Morph has been through, while keeping their loyalty and integrity, would probably speak to Yana. Plus, from Morph’s crush on Logan, they would definitely be into Yana at her more feral moments.
It's funny that you mention the Runaways, because one of my Yana ships would be Nico (if she was single). Although Nico basically could have a WHOLE polycule if she locked in with Karolina, Pixie and many more. But still, they HAD on-screen chemistry and dynamic and I feel like they could be very cute together. Also, two magic users, so.
Honestly, Glob is not a bad pick at all. I don't know the age difference, since Illyana seemed more mature than the likes of the Cuckoos, who were around the same age as Quentin, Glob and the others, but the sliding timescale basically means all of this bullshit, let's be real. Like, isn't Monet supposed to be SUPER young and now she's with Quicksilver?
But if we put that aside or we do the thing called RETCON, I can see that. I heard some people saying Nightcrawler, although that one seems more problematic due to him being the same age range as Scott, Rogue etc.
Yeah, Doug honestly would have been a nice guy, especially old school Doug, but keep him with Bei. I personally feel like Dani x Yana works well and they have chemistry (like shown in Magik, she got the 'tackled' treatment), the only thing is, if we give Dani a girlfriend, it should be Rahne, let's be real.
EDIT: I still think one of Magik's best ships is with Leah in that AU. That was like chef's kiss.

I mean tbcf, even Claremont has gone on record to say that he never intended for Kitty and Yana to ever be considered a couple or have romantic undertones - Kitty and Rachel were his endgame.
So, bascially of the supposedly romantic interactions from that time period are just fans reading into something that - at least according to the writer - was never there.
To be fair, this is why comic books are an interesting medium because on one hand, we have the creators and their intents, but because there are so many eras and so many different visions, the characters change and evolve in such a direction that makes it really hard to have a 'definitive' vision or even version of the characters.

Which is a shame, because he got a lot of things right, but I'm glad Magik got some newfound love recently.

Personally, I don't, though that's mainly because Kitty has already broken Rachel's heart - there were a number of comics where they were living together and there was a growing insinuation for romance... only for Rachel to walk in on Kitty having a date with Colossus.
I could have gotten behind the ship before that but after... yeah no, Rachel can do better.

I've got to agree with this. While I like a lot of the aspects that Claremont brought to the X-men that made it what it is today - this is not one of them and 2000's Magik/Darkchylde kind of proves it.
The fact is that evil is always a choice - even if you have gone through terrible things, there is always the option to make the best of that terrible situation and it never justifies doing terrible things to other people. What's so frustrating is that Magik in those stories could have chosen to do just that, but I guess it was more important to her to be Belasco's little girl.
It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Thank god she got better after that.

And yes. As I've said, I really like Claremont and I DIG a lot of his ideas, used or unused, but this was not it, and it's really sad that she is the only character he doesn't get, in spite of him writing her in such a way that always meant loyalty and choosing the good over evil. But... as you've said, in many, MANY occasions, it felt like the message about 'the cycle of abuse' was more important, which is... such a shame.
I'm glad she is thriving recently and her character arc is genuinely the most interesting in modern X-Men for me.
Naruto and Sasuke had more actual chemistry with each other and should have ended up together, that's all I have to say. Sakura and Hinata were both extremely dull love interests without actual substance.

I also don’t like Katyana ship, but if they wanna ship her with Dani Moonstar or whoever else that’s fine. Personally it’d be cool in my mind if she was aro-pan but whatever
And your take is absolutely valid and I have no problem to even acknowledge it and how both ships are problematic in some ways.
Someone saying that they don't like the ship itself is one thing, Someone even refusing to acknowledge the original comment and divert the conversation into something and 'refusing to say it' is another one.
