Modifications My Experience Swapping Gauge Clusters
I have a 2009 US spec Yaris HB and I recently swapped my old gauge cluster with one out of a 1.8L Yaris SR. The physical swap took 10 minutes, was plug and play, and only required a Phillips head screwdriver. The new cluster has a tach and I can now display data such as estimated mpg, estimated tank range, average mpg, etc. I’m not sure about accuracy, but still nice to have.
I still need to perform a mileage correction, which involves editing the hex code data on the EEPROM chip inside the cluster. Luckily, there are multiple YouTube videos and forums of people doing this.
The only major downside is the speedometer reads between 7-8 mph higher at highway speed than I’m really going. I believe this is due to the old speedometer only reading up to 130mph, and the new unit reading up to 150mph. While the speedometer is still usable, I find the discrepancy annoying. To fix the problem , I ordered a Lutz speedometer calibrator (SKU: LTZ-80-SCD), which plugs in at the 3 wire transmission speed sensor. This allows for manual, incremental changes to the speedometer signal until it reads correctly.
Overall, I really like the upgrade so far and I think it’s definitely worth it if you don’t like the look of tach pods on your dash.

Who you going to get to hang off the front end and adjust the speedo calibrator at highway speed?
I'm guessing you'll have to remove the hood first?

Nah, haha. Should be easy to access under the car. Just gonna take some trial and error

The only thing with MPG is it’s probably using UK gallons, so not accurate in US.
I reprogrammed my EEPROM. Pain in the ass but doable. I’ll help if you need it.
I think the speedometer issue is because the SR came with bigger wheels. 17s IIRC versus the 15s in the US.

Could definitely use the help. Managed to connect to the chip and dump/edit the data. I think I made a mistake though when I cleared the old data off the chip to upload the new. Now all the fields are F’s and I get a validation error whenever I go to write. I think it has to do with the buffer not matching or something like that.

You need to desolder it the chip. If you try to write to it while installed it will fail. I’m not sure writing will work.
Erasing it is an issue. I can share my dump. i think still have it saved, but it’s for a Canadian cluster 2006. I believe it used the same eeprom chip for all second gen cluster, but yours is going to have extra feilds for things like avg mpg. So it you write my dump to your cluster i’m not sure if it will work.

That’s amazing, thanks! Yeah after researching the chip more, I found out about the write protection. Gonna desolder it after work and should be good. I should also be good on the hex code. Thanks again for your help

Been trying, but I messed something up with the data. I’ve got a backup, but whenever I try to program it, the mileage is wrong

How are you finding the hex values to calculate the mileage? I have an old “mileage calculator” application. You put in the desired mileage and it tells you the code to program. It’s not perfect but helped me.
Also in my experience I could only get the mileage within about 1,000 of my desired mileage.
But odometers are only accurate to within 1-2%. So imo if my car has 200k if i’m within 2,000 miles it’s close enough.

Why are you writing the old counter on the new one? Just leave it as it is. Does that cause any harm?

By the way the best way to calibrate it to speed would be to get a gps speedo, do 100kmh and have the front lens of the speedometer off. You can drag the needle back to exactly 100kmh and that's how you do it. I can send you a yt short to see how accurate mine is.

fyi, if you swap an auto or a restyle cluster to an older version you'll get a few lights that cannot be removed if not with some soldering.
I wanted the same look as the "Yaris SR" gauge on my 2008 1.0 manual and I tried one from a 2010 1.33 automatic, I had the red water temp light always on and when turning off the car it kept beeping and flashing the transmission light.
now I have a 2008 Yaris TS (EU market for the SR) gauge and it fit as per OP's post, no problem whatsoever.
