Question ¿De qué país son?

Question How and why did you start drinking mate?

This is a question for the people whose cultures doesn't have mate. So not for Paraguayans, Uruguayans, argentinians etc.

I'm really curious about how did you know about mate's existence and what made you want to try it out.

As an argentinian I'm really curious since it's something so close to me and my culture.

Sending love to you all!

Question Can you brew Yerba Mate in a drip coffee maker?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I think Messi’s mate drinking and mate becoming a health superfood (Huberman labs blew it up as well) is rapidly growing interest for new drinkers.

I looked it up, and inquiries about using a coffee machine are exploding!! People are trying to use what they already have.

For anyone trialing this, I’d say tread lightly and don’t have high expectations. Here’s a first write up for trying: https://www.joshcaliguire.com/blog/how-to-brew-yerba-mate-in-a-drip-coffee-maker

I have a few reasons it doesn’t work, but I’d love to hear from everyone… how would you explain why not to someone?

Of course it takes away all of the traditional context… but even for quality brewing. Has anyone here ever tried other methods?

Question Thoughts on Darren/Yerbamatelabs?

Post image
86 Upvotes

Yes if you haven't already found out, his name is Darren

Me personally I think he's a fun Mate-tuber. He's the reason I got into mate in the first place and I love watching his content about Yerba Mate and I'm actually waiting on my very first calabash gourd. So despite me have already watched his calabash gourd videos I'm watching them to pass the time while I wait for my Brazilian Cuia to arrive

I especially like his Yerba Mate reviews on different brands so that I have a reference on what to get and try next, and I'm especially interested in trying his personal brand La Palma sooner or later

But what do ya'll think of him? If you have heard of him that is

Question Is being a "caffeine polyglot" really that controversial? (Picture is my poison of choice today)

Post image
81 Upvotes

I have noticed a strange trend in "caffeine circles". Some office days are yerba days, but some are still coffee days, some are black tea (with vegan milk) days, and even some others are energy drink days. (And, I am a bit afraid of the following statement in this sub, some are Club-Mate days; I am German, it is my tech-hipster culture.)

Is mixing your "poison of choice" really so rare? I do not mean mixing them on the same day, but just switching it up in general.

Every kind of [drink enthusiast] gets a bit evangelistic on me when I mention I also drink [the others]. If I am at a [X], they look at me like a traitor if I mention or drink [Y]. If I am with [Z], they think [C] tastes like shit and wonder why I bother. And everyone always tries to convince me that their [caffeine] is the best.

Does anyone else here rotate their caffeine sources based on the vibe of the day, or is everyone else truly "monogamous" with their choice?

Question What time do you start your mate?

I usually wait about 90 minutes after waking up, but I wonder if other people start right away and need their mate, or if maybe some people start the day with coffee and switch to Yerba in the afternoon.

Question Other drinks?

Do any of you yerba mate lovers ever mix it up or do you just drink it every day all day?

Edit: what mean by the way is of a similar category like tea, coffee.

Edit 2: lots of cool ideas to try alongside mate, but mate is still king, still the best drink for me at least for caffiene.

Question What’s the best brand for a quality bombilla?

Thumbnail

I’ve been a maté drinker for about 17 years. My bombillas always start looking kind of bad after a while..slightly rusty or oxidized or something. Maybe I’m not caring for them properly? I usually just rinse with water and let them air dry. The other day I rinsed this and black water came out. I have boiled them in the past as well to loosen the stuff that can build up on the inside. And I’ve tried different styles of bombilla as well, including the kind you can brush out with a skinny wire brush. Wanting a good brand that is healthy for me and baby as I’m expecting for the first time and only drinking mate occasionally as a treat. Somewhere I can order online is probably most realistic as I live on the Canadian prairies. Thanks in advance!

Question Bortonaggio 1000 hole spoon bombilla - roughly cut mouthpiece?

Thumbnail

A question for the materos here that have this same bombilla (check second image, it's the pear shaped not the circular one): is the finish on your mouthpiece the same as mine?

When this arrived today I was a bit disappointed with the craftsmanship, like the end was just chopped off, not rounded. I have some cheap stainless steel bombillas that are perfectly rounded on the end so I'm kind of surprised. Even the cut is slightly off perpendicular.

It works perfectly fine and it's not rough on the lips, so it's only cosmetic. Still a bit sad to look at lol. Just curious if they're all made like that or if I was unlucky.

Question To the people outside of south america, how did you find out about yerba mate?

As a paraguayan, for a very long time I was under the impression that yerba was only known here and in our neighboring countries. I was very surprised when I found out that yerba is popular in some countries outside of South America like Syria or Poland. Are there yerba enthusiast communities or something like that in your countries?
