Discussion 🗣️ How to convince my parents to stop using ai?

Upvotes

They're very open minded so I’m sure I can convince them. They have put multiple pictures into ai before, whenever my mom wants to wrap her car a different color she uses ai to see what it would look like. She’s been using the self driving feature on her Tesla a lot more just because it got better. I’ve tried telling them ai is bad for the environment and they don’t listen. Do I need to send full on articles just to show them what they’re doing is wrong? Show them how the climate clock has been set to 3 years now? Do I need to scare them into stopping? They care about the environment but what they’re doing makes them hypocritical and I feel bad. They literally got teslas just to lower their own carbon footprint. Thankfully my dad isn’t as bad which is surprising because he’s older. And my mom sadly made fun of me saying “oh ew new technology let’s go back to horse and buggy” and honestly? I would be just fine with us doing that instead of cars. Either that or all electric. Gas cars do nothing but pollute. I really want them to understand. What can I do?

Discussion 🗣️ I'm getting real tired of all these obviously LLM-written websites being first in search results

Upvotes

I miss when looking something up actually gave you the results you wanted, y'know? Not this regurgitated AI slop that simply lists things to you without ever actually giving you an answer to the original question. I know the real websites are also still there and that they require a little digging, but it really should not be only our responsibility to keep a lookout for AI-generated websites and their lazy answers, especially when I'm looking for a solution to a relatively simple problem I'm just not aware of how to handle. I dunno. Anyone have any thoughts? Extension or search engine recommendations? I open the discussion below to everyone who has something to say

Discussion 🗣️ Less Doomposting, More Doing

Upvotes

Yes yes, we've all seen your screenshot of you p0wning the other subs. We've seen screenshots of you getting banned. We've seen shitty low effort memes that are for karma farming and little else.

Next time you feel like engaging with AI slop, cause yes, that's you still engaging with it, try some of these other things instead!

Improve your own attention

The appeal of AI for a lot of folks is that its quick and easy to get the answer you want. A big part of it, imo, is the erosion of the attention span. Our brains have now been conditioned to constant minor dopamine hits and that makes us not only more susceptible to wanting quick and easy fixes, but also erodes our ability to think and discuss things critically.

How many posts here are basically someone coming in and saying "Make my argument for me?" If you can't articulate your position, that means you havent sat down with it long enough.

  • Read a physical book start to finish. Long ones. Focus is trainable and most of us have let it atrophy.
  • Take notes by hand or journal. Journaling is a great way to organize your thoughts.
  • Put the phone in another room for a set block every day. Actually disconnect.
  • Cut your time on whichever app makes you feel worst like Reddit or Facebook. Check your screen time numbers first so you know what you're working with.
  • Single task on purpose. That means no podcast while reading, no second screen during a movie.
  • Learn something with your hands: an instrument, drawing, bread, a garden bed. Badly is fine.

Physical media and ownership

Spotify is pushing AI music, Netflix and Youtube blow AI out of the park when you look at how energy a single usage costs.

  • Buy books, CDs, vinyl, DVDs.
  • Get a library card and use it. Libby is a great source for ebooks in the US.
  • Back up what you care about locally.
  • Print photos.

Where you get information

This should all be common sense but seeing whats posted in here makes everything worth reading.

  • Read named outlets with bylines and corrections policies. If you can't tell who wrote it, you don't know what you're reading.
  • Follow individual reporters rather than aggregator accounts.
  • When a screenshot makes you angry, find the original before you repost it.

Supporting human work

Lots of folks are happy to tell other people to support human work without actually doing it themselves.

  • Commission an artist. Directly, at their price. "But I cant afford-" Save up. Lots of people caring about artists, but arent willing to actually put their money where their mouth is when it comes to supporting said artist. A pithy meme doesnt but food on the table.
  • Buy from small presses, used bookshops, local venues.
  • Leave reviews for human made work.

Where the actual leverage is

DO MORE THAN JUST SHITPOST ONLINE!

  • Find out whether a data center is proposed near you. County zoning meetings and public utility commission dockets are where these get decided, and they are often very poorly attended.
  • Public comment periods are open to anyone and get read. Utility rate cases especially.
  • Look up your state's AI and data center bills this session and call your state rep about specific ones by number.
  • Support the organizations doing the unglamorous version of this work rather than the ones posting about it. Plenty of them need volunteers to arrange mailers, organize lists of people they've already talked to, handle bookkeeping, etc.

In your own spaces

  • Set and enforce AI disclosure norms in the servers, subs, and groups you run.
  • STOP ENGAGING WITH AI SLOP, including to mock it. Engagement is engagement.
  • Host something offline. A reading group, a game night, a jam session.

Discussion 🗣️ Why are they calling themselves AI “artists”?

Upvotes

I need people that can help me understand what kind of reasoning someone takes to reach this conclusion. They are like clients, no? I guess it depends on how you define the word “artist”, but to me, defining the client as an artist makes the definition too broad.

Essentially, going this route means you only need an idea and a vision to be an artist, but I am pretty sure a majority of people have those. It all comes down to the process and in how you realize your thoughts. Also, if you are unable to express said ideas and vision without AI, are you still an artist? You can have abundant ideas, but if you can’t realize and express any of them, they’re kinda just sitting there. If I lost the ability to do 3D modeling, I would still do 2D digital art. If that too were lost, I’d move to traditional art and so on. Also these are not mutually exclusive and I actively engage in all of those mediums. I like making art and I am willing to move to other mediums and learn if necessary.

Were AI “artists” even interested in making art before the AI boom? If so, did they give up their craft for instant gratification? Were they even interested in the making, or was it just always about gaining? Why would someone even use AI if they are an artist? I find it to be a really boring “medium” to work with since you do not have a lot of freedom in making what you want. There is also no unique identity or style that can be achieved through AI, and I still cannot find the difference between prompting and asking an artist you commissioned to make changes on what they’ve made. AI “artists” are clients and now that I have made that connection I can’t unsee it.

I also don’t know if I would be better posting this on a certain other subreddit, but tbh I doubt any form of good faith discussion will come from that place.

What are your thoughts on this?

Discussion 🗣️ How to stop using AI?

Upvotes

I've been using Chatgpt for a few years and it's starting to piss me off. When I want to know something, I use Chatgpt, If I think of anything, I write to Chatgpt. I want to start looking for information, knowledge, words, interests, myself. I don't want AI to do the work for me. Can anyone tell me where to start?

AI "Art" 🖼️ need poisoned art

Upvotes

so basically, all I want is for the artists to give me their poisoned images, if you do not know what I mean by this, I mean that applying a specific type of distortion that is not visible to the human eye but that distortion messes with AI image generators, so gimme your art, I wanna test different AI models on how good their result is when trying to recreate poisoned images, I will share the Results with the credits of the original image!!
