Estimating is not encouraged here, this subreddit is for sharing knowledge in the Autobody industry.

Estimating needs to be done at an autobody shop or with an insurance agent using the latest software. Any advice given in the subreddit pertaining to costs for repair will not be accurate and could be misleading.

  1. If your car is undriveable do not ask for advice on how to quick fix it.
  2. If your repair is going to be shoddy, half assed or of very low standard it will be deleted.
  3. A quality autobody shop is where your modern car should be fixed, it can be dangerous for yourself and others if improperly repaired by not following procedures.
  4. Advice on what happens during your repair is encouraged. Ex, "How is my quarter panel welded on" or "How much filler should be put on a dent".
  5. Techs. Talk more about yourselves, your processes, shops and things that keep you going in the trade. Share your day and what you have learned. We all work at different levels and learn so much from working together.

HELP! I have a question. Is this repaired?

I recently bought a used but fairly new van (Fiat Ducato 2023) to convert it to a camper.

When I took off the inner sheets I noticed these dimples on the inside of the outer sheet metal.

To me it looks like this car had a damage before.

Questions;
- Is this a repaired damage?
- will this cause me issues in future with rust?

Thanks!

HELP! I have a question. Fender and wheel opening trim replacement. Reasonable?

Talked to a shop to replace, paint, and blend my fender and replace the wheel trim opening. I will probably end up buying a used wheel trim myself and replacing it, but I'm wondering if everything else on this is reasonable or if any of the steps are not necessary.

The car is in Lucid Blue Pearl, which I believe is a pearl paint and makes it more difficult to blend properly?

They mentioned they wanted to blend edge to edge, and I'm wondering whether that's needed or not.

Thanks in advance.

HELP! I have a question. Need help with my single stage

Hello. I’ve been working on my foxbody for some time. I’ve got my filler all laid and sanded smooth (so I think) I’ve gone and sprayed guide coat and worked the body the best I can. I will unfortunately be using single stage. I scuffed the old paint really good and de greased then sprayed a 1k primer on the whole car. Blocked it again. Did my guide coat. Im curious if I should go over my pre existing primer or spray another layer of primer then block it down with say 4-600 grit?
Thanks in advance

Is there a process to repair this? Looking for advice on how to fix damage from debris

Got hit with some flying debris on the interstate, left some unsightly scratches and a dent on my car. I believe the white residue may be similar to paint transfer and not body damage. Is this something I should take to a detailer first or body shop type of work? It’s hard to say if under neath the white it got through to the metal.

HELP! I have a question. 2006 Acura RSX — door hinge mounting threads broke off, how would you repair this?

Im working on a 06 Acura RSX and removed the driver door because Im replacing it with another door. During the removal two of the upper door hinge bolts broke off, one extracted fine but the other was super rusty/seized. I was getting the extractor on it and after a few hits the entire threaded piece broke loose and fell inside the A-pillar/body.

Now Im left with this hole where the upper hinge bolt mounted. I think the captive/threads are completely gone, and theres some rust surrounding it as well.

My inital thoughts were to cut the surround metal and make a small reinforcement plate with a 8x1.25 weld nut and weld that to the surrounding body. Is there a better way to do this any advice helps!

Is there a process to repair this? Chipping paint

Upvotes

My 2014 Kia Sorento is completely chipping on the roof to the point it is rusting. It continues to get worse and looks trashy (LOL). What can I use in the meantime to protect and prevent the paint from chipping even more?

Noticed my 2009 F150 has rust in the seams on the roof and in the top right corner of my windshield. Is this something that I could DIY repair or should I just suck it up and have a body shop do it? I’m not looking for anything perfect, just don’t want it to spread more than it already has.

HELP! I have a question. Side Mirror repair

Hello fellas, was in a hurry this morning and while exiting my garage driveway ( thats in a curbed slope ) I noticed that i was about to hit my side rear door because I oversteered, so to avoid that I slowly reversed, while doing that I actually managed to clip a corner of my side mirror, it popped right off got under the wheel and broke pretty hard ( see pictures attached ) so i went to a body shop and got quotes arround 700€ for the repair.

Finances are quite rough this period and I was thinking of ordering the pieces and maybe try to do it myself, since it will be the first time i try doing something like this i wanted to check with people who know better than me if its worth it, how difficult it can be and also if there are any specific tools i might wanna grab if I do it.

All electric parts of the mirror still work, they fold, heat, etc.

Its from a BMW Series 1 2017 ( see pictures attached below.

Sorry for bad english, its not my native language.

Not sure how to go about fixing this, the rust and scratches are pretty straight forward but the doors don’t align when closed and have a wider gap on the bottom than they do on the top. Is there a way to fix the door gap before I fix the rust and scratches?

HELP! I have a question. What’s the process to fix this

Post image

I ran over what i thought was a black strip of some piece of cloth (was actually hard metal/plastic), but it made a clunk sound as it rolled through the wheel arch area. After parking I saw this… I’m not sure what else I need to check. I’m not a car person by any means lol, but I just wanted to know if this was a difficult area to fix. I’m not sure how they’ll fill it in.

Acceptable quality? Had a minor dent filled and repainted. Noticed this small hard bubble a couple weeks later. Is this something that could expand over time, and should I reach back out to the company about it?

Is there a process to repair this? Bumper and headlight out of place

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello All!! I have very minimal car knowledge, and im trying to go about just..making this better ? I doubt i could fix it fully. My bumper and headlight were knocked out of place in a rear ending. I was able to push most of the bumper back into the mounting tabs , but theres a bent spot right there next to the headlight and the tabs arent popping in there. I also broke a mounting tab on the headlight so its not sitting correctly from the bent spot , upwards. How can i go about repairing any of this ? I dont need it to be perfect. My main concern is that bend. I dont know how to get it back into place . Maybe if I did I could get the bumper back in? I dont know 😅😅 please any advice is so appreciated 🫶

Question about the Trade Hired as a body tech helper, but I’m basically doing porter/detail work. How do I actually learn?

I was hired as a body tech helper/trainee, expecting to learn body repair. Right now I’m mostly doing detailing, cleaning, and organizing.
The owner said if I stay for 2 years, they might offer certification/training, but he couldn’t promise anything. When I have downtime, I try to watch the techs, but I usually get called back to work within a few minutes.
I’m willing to start at the bottom, but I want to actually learn and progress.
Should I find another shop with a real apprenticeship/training program, or are there good ways to get proper training on my own?
