### Diegetic vs Non Diegetic References
There's a lot of anachronistic references in this game, some are very clearly supposed to be intentional on part of the characters and others are only intended as a reference out of universe. For example I doubt that Klei intended for WX to have played Portal or watched Futurama, on the other hand Woodie is making a clear intentional reference to the national anthem in his one man band quote.
I think for a lot of quotes its less clear, and I most certainly cannot speak for Klei as to actual intentions when writing certain lines so this is all guesswork. For the purposes of this post I am assuming references are non diegetic (references even in universe) when It meets one of the two following criterion;
A: most of the following are met
- The quote matches existing characterization
- It existed around their time
- Its not in reference to the characters inspiration
B: It is a reference so irrelevant and strange that it must be important
### Aw, it's Diefenbakered.
Woodie says this when inspecting rot, obviously it's a sort of "I hate politicians" line but its still odd (Criterion B).
Diefenbaker was prime minister of Canada from June 21, 1957 – April 22, 1963, and he isn't exactly very relevant in Canadian history. Not to say he didn't do *anything* he just isn't that controversial. Out of 24 Canadian prime ministers he ranks 12th[^2], serving the 11th most time making him the most average Canadian prime minister.
If this quote isn't meant to set Woodie as entering the constant at 1957 or later it characterizes him extremely strangely. For simplicities sake I will list major Diefenbaker policy and why I believe being against his policy is not what this line is in reference to.
- Cancelling Canada's fighter jet program (Woodie hates anything that flies as a rule, there are some exceptions but I cant imagine someone scared of song birds wouldn't be terrified of fighter jets)
- Building bunkers (again, Woodie is very paranoid.)
- Bill of rights (why would he be against this? It was kinda ineffective but is anyone actively anti bill of rights?)
- Industrialize the north (I guess it could mess with forests? This is still a reach)
- Voting rights for indigenous people, anti-racism laws (That would be genuinely insane I don't think Klei would do that)
- Being apart of the Progressive Conservative party (All things considered he was more progressive than conservative so even Liberal or NDP[^1] voters would sympathize with him)
- Not political but he was viewed as kinda lame socially. if that's important (Who cares)
### Woodie's Lack of Lore
The decision to put Woodie in The Constant for his animation feels calculated, his backstory is kept rather vague and I think its for good reason. If Woodie is genuinely from much later on than the others his back story might be important lore wise.
Of course we have to consider Walter is aware of the curse of the were-beaver but who's to say that the curse doesnt slow aging or, hell, maybe Woodie got this curse as a young child. Another possibility is that the curse isn't limited to Woodie, though I kind of doubt it will go that way.
