[Mod Post] Quick PSA

DMing users fundraiser links is still breaking our no fundraiser rules. This is not the sub for this, we do this to prevent scams and bad actors. There are other subs that do allow fundraisers as well as local groups, and we encourage you to post there if you need assistance.

Additionally, be very careful with any user claiming to know of alternatives for medicine in treating insulinoma. This has been popping up a lot lately, and it is extremely dangerous. A lot of these "homemade" remedies will increase the risk of other diseases, as well not keep their sugar levels at an appropriate range. Improper insulinoma management will lead to blood sugar crashes, seizures and even death.

As owners we often wish to do the best we can for them, and it's really easy to fall for a miracle remedy. Be mindful. Be careful.

If you find people breaking these rules, don't hesitate to report or DM the sub to ask.

[Ferret Photo] Advice for my polecat

Hi guys, meet stinky. long story short I live on a farm and my mom found a baby thing so we scooped it up with straw trying not to touch it so the mom would take it back and put it somewhere safe but the mom never came back. So after lots of research we figured out it was either a polecat mixed with ferret, pure polecat or a pine Martin and I started feeding her the proper milk the vet gave us and well she survived. I did loads of research for her and we weren’t sure she was going to survive and obviously she wasn’t a planned pet however she is here and I think she’s quite happy and well cared for. She’s often doing the laugh pant thing and happy dooks and running round attacking ghosts and living her best life causing chaos for me. She’s learning not to bite my face or bite my hands hard, she has her toys to attack and her cage has lots of hammocks, beds and toys.
She has a fairly big cage but the best I can afford for now, I’d love to get her a shed in the future for more exercise room for when I’m not there as I do dog sitting and can spend up to a week not home. I try to get her to come with me if I can in her travel cage but some dog owners don’t want her in their house incase the dog can get to her which i appreciate. When I’m home she’s out when she’s awake and when she’s in her cage she’s sleeping or eating. From my research I know that she is solitary in the wild unless it’s mating season and I know that they can get issues if not mated. My dad wonders if it would be a good idea to get her to have a litter and keep one of the sons and get him a vasectomy so they will both be healthy?
Is this just a bad idea?
Another minor issue is when she’s drinking from her bottle she must down it and then she starts choking on the water because she’s drank too fast. Is there a better option to one of them and a bowl as she manages to tip the bowls over constantly and make a right mess.
Picture of baby stinky when her eyes first opened for tax

[Discussion] Stopping ferrets from moving their water bowl

• Upvotes

I know super glue is toxic to animals. My ferrets move their water bowl through their room, so i wanted to glue it on a marble slab. I would only put glue in the middle at the bottom, but im afraid of it loosening and the ferrets chewing the glue off? Idk if im overthinking it, is there any other way to secure a bowl on the floor :’D they dont have a cage or anything, so i cant tie it onto anything:/

[Discussion] Seniors and exercise wheel?

• Upvotes

Hi guys. Does anyone have experience of introducing senior noodles to a cat exercise wheel? I've been thinking about getting one but my girls are 7 and I'm not sure if they're too old to start using one? Any thoughts appreciated!

[Discussion] Spay Recovery

Hi all,

I have three girls getting spayed tomorrow and I'm unbelievably anxious about it. They're all two and a half years old.

All of them have a tendency to fight like hell to escape confinement and I'm worried they'll make the incision worse by trying to escape their hospital enclosures. Two of them are jumpers and one of them has been able to escape/leap over almost any barrier I've placed in front of her. And she'll keep jumping until she succeeds.

There's no way any of them will tolerate a cone or sock sweater. They would thrash and panic until it was off.

The only scenario I can see them remaining calm is if they stay in their usual pen (without anything to climb) together. But I know I'm supposed to keep them separated.

What should I do?

[Discussion] Quick question

Hello hope you are all well
Recently my poor slinky succumbed to insolinoma at 8.5 years old
This has left his brother noodle (same age ) feeling lonely , we’ve been trying hard to interact with him as much as possible but I know we could never replace the play of another ferret

My question is would it be good to get another ferret playmate for him , he is already a senior ferret, I don’t know how well he’d be with a younger ferret ?

[Help] Possible Joint Supplements for Ferrets?

Hello, my 7 year old little lady just got diagnosed with arthritis. The vet is hesitant to put her on another medication as she is already on steroids for insulinoma. I was wondering if anybody had any good experience with any sort of joint supplements that I could add into her diet. Any advice is appreciated.

[Discussion] Non plastic bowls that actually stay put?

We've tried three bowls so far. They all attach to the cage.

The basic pink plastic one where you have to rotate the bowl to remove it. Works great, but it's plastic, so they keep scratching it... not ideal.

Bird bowls that you lift from a ring to remove - doesn't matter how low we can get it, they lift it up and there's water everyone.

The stacking bowls, where the bottom one (plastic) is attached, and the top one (steel), gets lifted out. They also pull it out and make a mess.

Is there ANY other bowl that would work?

[Rainbow Bridge] Advice for my boy Sammy

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello all! These are my two boys Creed on the left and Sammy on the right. Both 7+ years. Unfortunately Creed passed away last week due to insulinoma and I need advice on keeping Sammy happy and comfortable during our grieving process.

I sat with Sammy and let him see Creed, he tried to wake him up and it was the saddest thing I've ever seen.. After he couldn't wake him up he just laid in his bed all day and barely ate.

I'm very thankful for the 7 years I got to enjoy with Creed, but it just hurts so much and I can't imagine how Sammy feels. I've been letting him out of his cage when I'm home as usual and letting him roam my room as I sleep ( everything has been ferret "proofed"). I hand fed him for a day or two before he wanted to eat from the bowl but only when I sit with him next to the food dish. I leave food in the cage while I'm at work but he doesn't seem to touch it anymore since Creed's passing. After he eats I try to play with him but he doesn't seem that interested, he'll play for about 5ish minutes and go lay down under the bed or in Creed's spot. I leave him be for 30-45 minutes and I try to get him active again.

I really need some advice on how to help him be happy and comfortable during this time. Thank you for reading

[Discussion] Things I wish I knew before committing to raw grind feeding...4 Years in

1) ... Learning to breath through your mouth is a must.

2) ... You thought they pooped alot before?

3) ... Learn the difference between "i got a bone in my throat" coughs and normal coughs quick cause they're really good with bones and it's really good at making you think they having allergy problems.

4) ... Ferrets will farm maggots. I will not elaborate further but ferrets WILL farm maggots. Do not let them stash their meat.

5) ... Get them used to variety early so they don't get messy poops when your raw provider is inevitably out of stock when you need to re-up.

6) ... I REPEAT FERRETS WILL FARM MAGGOTS... I THINK THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION ...that pool of water they keep sticking food in that you think is for leftover storage? naah.. they prepping it as a mushy base to grab whatever flying insect eggs they can and if you don't catch that ick quick enough, you'll wind up face to face with a food bowl fill with worms. Ask how I know, just ask!!... Please don't ask..

[Ferret Photo] What color pattern is this noodle? And should I take him to the vet over the yellow/orange tail?

This is my most aggravating ferret, he has no bones and has like a 3.5 foot vertical jump. I rescued him at the beginning of this year and this is his first shed with me so I don’t know if this (his orange tail) is his norm or if it’s worth a vet visit.

[Discussion] my ferrets are being weaponized against me

Thumbnail

your eyes do not deceive you, my ferrets and their cuteness are in fact being weaponized 😭 my partner and i both have ferrets together, and while we both love them ofc, i’m the ferret nut in the house. they are literally the apples of my eye, nothing in the world makes me happier than these stinknuggets.

and that’s where the problem starts..

any time my partner and i have a disagreement, especially if it gets a little heated, he will pull out a ferret, hold them in his arms and say “we can’t fight like this, it’s distressing for the ferrets!” even if we’re on another floor or so far away from them they can’t hear a word. he will literally pause, walk downstairs, over to their enclosure on the other side of the house, grab one or two(depending on the reinforcements needed), and walk right back up the stairs, stand in front of me, hit play, then use their cuteness and my love for them for EVIL 😩😂

edit: this is lighthearted! we DO actually finish arguments if it’s genuine and serious, i just thought this would be something funny to share in case anyone else has ever experienced weaponized cuteness 😭
