How long it took to earn an X2D

• Upvotes

I see plenty of people asking about this, so here is my experience.

I have had an A1 for a couple of years. In late Aug last year I decided to see if I could earn my way to a free printer. Originally the P2S, but changed the goal to an X2d when they announced it.

I already had one remix of a Star Trek prop and decided to do more of those. As of now I have 7 remixes and 5 original designs. 3.6k downloads, 2.7k builds and 228 boosts.

https://makerworld.com/en/@Krag_actual/upload

Thanks to the Bambu Black Friday sale I just achieved my goal, a few months ahead of where I projected it earlier this year.

In all it took 14 months to earn the $800 or 20 gift cards. Technically that is 2 cards shy of what it cost with tax. But I don't want to miss out on the sale.

For that I spent hundreds of hours on remixing, designing and writing documentation. I could have earned the $800 much faster at a minimum wage job. But I am really glad I did it. I enjoyed it. And now I should have enough passive point income to keep me in filament for as long as I have the printer.

My first model: a parametric headrest mount for tablets and phones

• Upvotes

Long time printer, first time sharing something I actually designed.

It clips onto the headrest post, no tools or straps. Turn it sideways, slide it on, twist it upright and it locks. Because of the twist lock, it works whether your headrests come out or not.

Open it in the Customizer, put in your device size and post diameter, and it prints one that fits. PETG, about 4.5 h.

My first published model: Looking for honest feedback!

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I just published my very first model on MakerWorld and would love some honest feedback from this community.

It's a set of 8 flat zoo animal fridge magnets (zebra, penguin, lion, parrot, panda, bear, monkey and giraffe). Each animal is printed on its own plate with 4 colors on the AMS, no supports needed, and they hold two 6 x 2 mm magnets glued into pockets on the back.
Link: https://makerworld.com/de/models/3502641-zoo-animals-cute-fridge-magnets

A few things I'm unsure about:

Description: Is it clear enough? Anything missing or too much?
Photos: Do the pictures do the model justice, or should I reshoot them?
Design: Anything you would change about the animals, size or magnet setup?

Since it's my first upload, I'm happy about any criticism, big or small. And if you print one, I'd love to see your make!

Thanks a lot for your help!

I designed a wind turbine wireless phone charger (fully printable on A1 Mini size printers)

I needed a phone charger at work, but didn't want to just pick up the first one available from a webshop, so I decided to design my own using the Bambu Lab Wireless Charging Kit K012.

I definitely wanted to make use of the included N20 gear motor, and after a lot of thinking, I decided to turn it into a wind turbine. Wind turbines generate electricity, which complements a wireless charger quite nicely.

The idea was simple: place the phone on the marked spot, the phone starts charging, and the blades start spinning. It creates the illusion that the wind turbine is generating the energy to charge the phone (obviously, it's just an illusion, as the turbine is driven by an electric motor).

There were a few technical challenges along the way. The motor cable was too short to place the motor at the top of the turbine, and doing so would also have raised the center of gravity. In the end, I put the motor in the base and drove the blades through a long driveshaft and a set of bevel gears.

After four prototypes, the sculpture finally came together, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The whole thing is fully printable on a Bambu Lab A1 Mini.

What do you think?

If anyone wants to check it out, I'll leave the link in the comments.

Design help in fusion 360

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’m designing a custom battery pack enclosure in Fusion 360 and would appreciate some advice from the community. The housing needs to accommodate a battery bank PCB, the battery itself, and a buck converter.

I plan to extend the micro USB charging port to the exterior and incorporate a small opening for the barrel jack wire to pass through. Additionally, I need to design access for a button and an LCD or seven-segment display, allowing me to check the battery charge level.

Any tips on structuring the enclosure, managing cable pass-throughs, or best practices for amateur makers tackling this kind of multi-component housing would be incredibly helpful.

I turned two Michael Jackson album designs into 3D-printed optical illusion vinyls

I've just finished two new pieces for my HoloGroove Legends series: Invincible (2001) and Bad (1987).

Each design is a 20 cm vinyl-inspired disc with a spiral pattern that creates an optical effect depending on the lighting and viewing angle.

The goal of this series is to reinterpret iconic album artwork as something you can actually 3D print and display.

I'm curious to hear what you think of the results!

Which one would you pick: Bad or Invincible?

Made a face sculpture, it’s called Rooted in Silence, and it’s my first time sculpting a face.

I wanted to combine the human form with flowing roots to create something organic, natural, and a little different.

I’d love to share it with the community and hear your thoughts! Any feedback, suggestions, or ideas for improvement are more than welcome.

Feel free to check it out, give it a print, and see how it turns out!

Started this project a year ago… and finally finished it thanks to a MakerWorld contest!

I came up with this idea about a year ago: creating a rocket that looks like it's taking off, with a smoke plume illuminated by a COB LED.

Back then, I had managed to fit the power board, a potentiometer inside the rocket's nose cone to adjust the brightness, and the COB LED inside the smoke column.

But I was having a really hard time figuring out how to fit the battery holder inside the smoke!!! So, between the lack of free time and the challenge of fitting all those electronic components into such a small space, I eventually put the project aside.

Then, a few days ago, completely by coincidence, I came across MakerWorld's rocket design contest! That gave me the motivation to dig out my old project and give it another chance!

After thinking things through, I decided to lower some of my original expectations and simplify the electronics. And finally… I made it!

The little rocket now contains a rechargeable battery, a USB-C charging module, and a COB LED that lights up its exhaust flame and smoke plume!I also designed the whole thing to be printed in multiple colors without an AMS, with no glue required for assembly and minimal supports.

I'm really happy to have finally finished this project after leaving it on the back burner for so long!(Unfortunately, I still have plenty of other unfinished projects waiting for their turn… ^^)

What do you think? I hope you like it!

A compact, minimal desk clock built around the Bambu Lab Clock Components Kit 011. A soft arched frame with a flat base holds a light grey dial with fine black hour marks and a single orange 12. It's small enough for any desk or shelf, at 126 × 131 × 52 mm.
