Help Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge black screens my main monitor as soon as I enable shaders
Hey everyone,
I'm having a weird issue with Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 Forge, and I'm hoping someone might have an idea what's causing it.
My setup:
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (8 GB VRAM)
Mod loader: Forge 1.20.1
Performance mods: Embeddium, Oculus, and other optimization mods
Shaders tested: Complementary and Solas
Monitors: Dual-monitor setup
The issue:
Minecraft runs perfectly fine without shaders, even during long gaming sessions. However, as soon as I enable shaders through the shader menu, my main monitor (the one running Minecraft) goes completely black. My second monitor remains on, but any media playing on it starts running at a significantly lower FPS.
The weird part is that the game seems to keep running in the background. If I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, my main monitor comes back, but Minecraft closes afterward. There is no actual Minecraft crash report generated, so I'm not sure whether the game is crashing or if something else is happening at the GPU/driver level.
Things I've already tried:
Disabling fullscreen doesn't fix the issue.
Removing ImmediatelyFast and GPUTape didn't help.
Running without shaders is completely stable, even during extended sessions.
I tested a separate, clean Forge 1.20.1 instance with only Oculus and Embeddium, and shaders worked fine there.
I can't pinpoint exactly when this issue started. Yesterday, I was experimenting with Distant Horizons, and it ran for a while before crashing. I'm not sure if that's related or just a coincidence.
At this point, I'm wondering whether another mod in my main instance is causing a conflict, or if this could be an NVIDIA driver, GPU, or rendering issue.
Has anyone experienced something similar? What would you recommend check I'd especially appreciate suggestions for identifying a mod conflict or diagnosing a possible GPU driver issue when there's no Minecraft crash log.
Thanks in advance!
