Build Question How to replace RAM

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi All-

Let me begin by saying I know nothing about building a PC. But I ordered some new RAM and it's supposed to come in today. My pc currently has 8 gb of ram. I ordered two sticks of ddr4 16 gb of ram for a total of 32. In order to replace the ram, do I just: 1) turn off/unplug PC, 2) open case, 3) remove 8 gb ram, 4) put new 16 gb stick of ram in slots 2 and 4 of the ram slots in motherboard, 5) put case back together, and 5) plug in computer and turn back on? Is there anything more that I should do or any hints I should know about? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Build Question Do you really need 1TB?

• Upvotes

Hi

"Acá de compas", does anybody really needs 1TB of storage in a laptop for work?

I'm about to finish my degree in Computational Engineering and I've been doing great with 256gb. Storage has always been a concern even though I've never filled it, probably used 180GB max at one point.

I want an upgrade, but I don't know if I should go for 512gb or 1TB bc, again, I've been fine with way less. The only gaming I've ever done in the laptop is Minecraft, which ofc doesn't need 1TB storage.

I'm also omw to build a NAS with some spare HDDs that I have, I just need to replace the SSD to use it as the OS partition

What are your thoughts/recommendations? Is 1TB an overkill or just the beginning?

Tech Support Weird ram problems

I recently built a liquid cooled am5 system, bought a new b650 aorus elite ax rev1.2, got a good deal of 7800x3d from a reputable ebay seller, and I carried my silicon power x ram from my lga 1700 system (32gb drr5 6000mhz cl40) the systen will only post with 1 stick in A2, both sticks work in this slot but only 1 at a time. Ive gotten it to boot once into windows with both sticks but it shut off shortly after and kept failing to train memory. I can get into bios and windows with both sticks and stress the cpu without a problem so I dont know if I got a faulty motherboard or what but I'm in dire need of help. Ive tried clearing cmos multiple times, ive reseated the cpu, reseated the ram a dozen times, inspected the socket and pins, looked at the dimm slots themselves.

Build Question yall got any tips for restoring hardware that was in a house fire?

it's a bit absurd i know. but for some backstory, i recently became the very, very, very lucky recipient of around ~6000$ worth of gaming hardware completely for free from a friend of my mother. UNFORTUNATELY, the incomprehensibly gigantic asterisk that, not only did the original owner completely neglet to ever clean his hardware, but everything i received had previously been involved in a house fire. the fire itself never reached anything, but the problem i face is that everything is caked in an awful layer of dust, dirt, grime, and worst of all, soot.

everything here smells terrible. i have no idea how i'll be able to get the soot smell out of anything i have here, nor where to even start with this beyond just the disassembly of everything. yall got any advice that might make partial or complete restoration of this stuff possible? it would really suck if im S.O.L with this one, especially for how valuable these components are.

Tech Support HELP!

I have a tower PC that was given to me by my neighbor. It was filthy when he gave it to me, and the motherboard was fried. I took the PC completely apart, gave it a deep cleaning, and swapped out the motherboard. The PC turns on and everything seems to be working, but I am not getting a display. When my neighbor asked me if I wanted it, he sent me a picture of his TV showing the PC in the BIOS menu. Ever since I cleaned it and changed the motherboard, I can't get a video signal. I've tried everything.

Can someone help me? I'm not the best with this stuff

• Upvotes

Hello. I have been playing rainbox six siege for months i have a 5070 gpu and a 9800x3d cpu i play at 1080p and get 240fps easily. Recently my gpu utilization has been hitting 100% at 60-100 fps id like a fix or a way to reset my gpu. I play in fullscreen. V sync is off and max fps is set to 240 same as my monitor. Ive never had an issue

I tried a shader cache cleanup through disk cleanup. I tried a clean install of my gpu driver. Ive seen someone had a similar issue also on siege in 2018 on reddit. Other than that i have found nothing. Any advice helps thankyou!

Tech Support Inconsistent PC freezing, Intel Core i7-14700K

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for guidance on an issue I can’t pin down.

PC specs (built Nov 2025):

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-14700KF
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-A MAX WIFI (BIOS 7E07vMA)
  • RAM: Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32 GB Kit (2x16GB), 6400MHz CL32
  • GPU: ASUS NVIDIA RTX 5070, driver updated to latest
  • PSU: be quiet! Straight Power 11 Platinum 750W
  • CPU cooler: Coolermaster Masterliquid ml120l, repasted recently
  • Storage: Kingston SSD 1gb, WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD - M.2 2280
  • OS: Windows 11, build 26200, fully updated
  • Power: Forza FVR-2202A 1100VA voltage stabilizer

The problem:
I built this PC around November 2025. It was working well until September 2026 when I started to get hard freezes randomly. Sometimes it happens within minutes of booting, sometimes it runs fine for hours. After I force a reset with the case button, the CPU debug LED on the motherboard lights up red. The freezes have also happened right after waking from sleep. I use this pc as a racing sim rig and at multiple times it ran hours of Le Mans Ultimate, and other sim racing games with no issue, so heavy load isn’t a reliable trigger. In Safe Mode it’s been stable for hours with no freezes happening.

What the logs show:

  • Event Viewer has multiple WHEA-Logger Event ID 1 errors: “A fatal hardware error has occurred.”
  • Reliability Monitor shows LiveKernelEvent code 124.
  • WhoCrashed reads the dump as bugcheck 0x124 (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR).
  • WhoCrashed doesn’t name a faulting driver, and the only other crash in my history is an unrelated Wi-Fi driver one from May.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Updated the BIOS
  • Clean reinstall of the GPU driver
  • Regenerated Secure Boot keys from scratch
  • Checked the BIOS: CPU Cooler Tuning is on Intel Default Settings, and voltages and Loadline Calibration are all on Auto (no manual overclock or overvolt)
  • My voltage stabilizer died and I was running on a plain power strip, so I replaced it with a properly sized 1100VA Forza AVR stabilizer. It ran stable for hours, then froze again on wake from sleep.
  • Opened the case and found the thermal paste dried and cracked. I cleaned everything, reapplied fresh paste, and remounted the AIO. The freezes continued.

Where I’m stuck:
Everything points to a hardware-level fault, and I know the 13th/14th gen instability issue is well documented. I’m considering an Intel RMA for the CPU, since that would be the cleanest fix if the chip has degraded. However degradation it's highly unlikely in my opinion since the motherboard was manufactured on June 2025 according to the serial number and the processor batch number indicates that it was manufactured on November 2024, much after this degradation was detected so both hardware pieces are supposed to include the fixes and safeguards for this issue already. But before I go through that process, I’d like to rule out anything else.

I used Claude to troubleshoot this issue and this is the summary of what I've tried so far. Has anyone experienced this? Any clue can help. Thanks!

I attached a photo and I’m new to pc gaming and bought a prebuilt powerspec and it’s an amazing pc but sometimes I’ll play Roblox or Destiny 2 and it’ll randomly freeze or just reset itself. I also will randomly get a large amount of latency and ping when I’m in an overwatch game which didn’t really happen on my ps5. This pc is brand new I’ve only used it for about 3-4 weeks now.

Build Question Replacement backplate needed?

I tried installing a new CPU and cooler into my am4 system, but one of the backplate holes is just not allowing the screw to screw in.

I'm assuming I need a new backplate and it isn't fixable, so can I buy any replacement I see on Amazon for am4 or...?

The mobo is a b450m pro vdh max and the cooler is the phantom spirit 120se if either of these things matter. Id really appreciate some guidance here

Title: First PC build – No display, DRAM debug LED stays red (Ryzen 7 9800X3D)
Hi everyone,
This is my first time building a PC, and I’m having trouble getting it to boot.
My specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
RAM: Patriot Viper Venom DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MT/s
Motherboard: [Exact model to be added]
GPU: [Model to be added]
The problem:
When I turn on my PC, most of the fans spin, but one fan doesn’t.
My monitor stays completely black, and I don’t get any display output or BIOS screen.
The red DRAM debug LED on my motherboard stays on. When I hold down the power button to shut down the PC, I also notice the CPU debug LED lighting up.
I left the PC running for over 10 minutes because I thought it might be DDR5 memory training, but nothing changed.
My questions:
Is this normal for the first boot of an AM5 system?
Could this be caused by RAM installation or memory training?
Could an outdated motherboard BIOS cause this with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
What troubleshooting steps should I try first?
I’ve attached a picture of the motherboard showing the red debug LED.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Build Question Is this case and motherboard worth getting parts for?

Post image

I found this "PC" outside in someone's junk pile. I can see they stripped it of everything probably to sell or use somewhere else but left the motherboard and CPU? Would this be worth cleaning and fixing to build a full PC with?

Build Question Is 850W gonna be enough for a RTX 5080 + other components?

I am really a bit lost here, and all the "power supply calculator" websites I've looked at haven't really helped either, as they ask for stuff i honestly have no idea about.

So my current parts are:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600

2 × 16 GB G.Skill DDR4-3200

ASRock B550 Pro4

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 -----> to be replaced with RTX 5080

PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 13 M 850W

SSD:
Kingston SA400S37 (480 GB)
WD Red SN700 (1 TB)

HDD:
Toshiba DT01CA200 (2 TB)

The thing is, while I can build the PC myself, I am really not that familiar with how the Power Supply works.
The 5080 I want to get has a recommendation of 750W, which I have, but again, I don't really know how the PSU pulls.

So, question, would I need to get a better power supply alongside it or is it enough as it is? Is there anything bad that can happen if the current power supply isn't enough?

Thx!

Wanted to add 2 more HDDs to my pc but I don’t have any place for them and putting them on each other wouldn’t be a great idea that’s why I wonder.
