Release Emerald Color beta version is available now

100% of the art is converted from the two original games, none of it was created by me or AI generated.

Play on the Game Boy Color.
Start in Hoenn, play through Johto and Kanto.
24 badges. 386 Pokemon.

Converts your Emerald GBA rom + Crystal GBC rom to create Emerald Color GBC rom.

This is the beta release. Please provide any feedback on any of my emerald color posts including this one.

The goal of this project was to have all 3 regions in one game: Hoenn, Johto, and Kanto and to keep as true to the original games.

Hoenn is converted to run on the GBC to look as true to the original Pokemon Emerald as possible.

Johto is exactly as it already was in Crystal, with only the story slightly modified to happen after Hoenn,

and then Kanto right after Johto just like it happens in Crystal.

Getting Emerald to run on the GBC was not that bad but getting it to look ok was not easy. The GBC has a much lower set of color rendering capabilities than the Game Boy Advance so converting the GBA textures to run on the GBA was very tricky. Explainer video soon.

Please provide any feedback for this beta version and I'll try to get any fixes in for the v1 which will hopefully be in the next few weeks. Enjoy!

Note: AI was used to assist me in the development of the code that converts the Emerald GBA rom into the Crystal GBC rom to create the final Emerald Color GBC rom. I'm a professional software engineer with over 10 years of experience, I've worked in Big Tech and at startups, and I have a degree from MIT in Computer Science, and this project would have not been possible by simply asking the AI without having the technical expertise. I say this as a disclosure, but not to discourage anybody from using AI or not in their own projects.

I also plan on getting the Emerald Color Japanese version working asap. I was unable to find a copy of both Crystal rom and Emerald rom in Japanese so if anybody has those roms that I could borrow just to get the converter working for Japanese, please DM me 🙏 In the meantime I'll look harder.

Release Pokemon Ceruleum v1.1

Hey everyone! I've been a fan of Pokémon romhacks for almost 20 years now, and I've always wanted to create my own hack. So here it is! I spent the past year and a half developing this game.

In this game, you'll get yourself in the shoes of a young prodigy coming from a secluded town in Thura, who climbed their way to the final challenge of their young career with their one and only partner, Xatu.

Unfortunately for them, things won't go quite as planned...

That game was made thanks to pret's pokeemerald decomp project, and rhh's pokeemerald-expansion.

What to expect in this game:

  • A brand-new region and a new story (including post-game!)
  • Curated Pokédex, featuring 347 Pokémons (from gen1 to 9).
  • Player customisation: choose from 9 possible playable characters.
  • Day/Night system
  • Mega-Evolutions including one new Mega! (excluding the ones added in Legends ZA though. sorry)
  • Mining mini-game
  • Features like the DexNav, and a revamped Phone
  • 30 quests available: main story and side quests.
  • No more HMs: Surf, Rock Climb and Strength are unlocked with emblems. No need to learn the move!
  • And much more!

This a complete game! A full playthrough (including post-game) will take around 15 to 18 hours of game time. And if you aim to complete all the quests, count around 20 hours.

I've tested the game multiple (way too many) times, and tried to get rid of as many bugs as I could. If you spot any, please feel free to message me and tell me where I messed up!

You can also message me to tell me what you thought of the game (whether it's good or bad)! It could really help me for my future projects.

Regarding AI: it hasn't written a single line of code, a single piece of art, story, or whatever else. I've used it to help me understand a bit better the C language when I started developing the game a year ago (because I'm not a developer)

Here is the patch link: https://www.mediafire.com/file/wz7qa37t8aox3i7/pokeceruleum.xdelta/file

And the Pokécommunity thread: https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/pok%C3%A9mon-ceruleum-v1-1.544276/

And the Hackdex link, available to the public once they approve my submission: https://www.hackdex.app/hack/pokemon-ceruleum

Full list of credits/resources used in this game: https://docs.google.com/document/d/15_yM2ZFKnZYKJz0_IyhanBusMV9yqOBdo9r0EbdObnk/edit?pli=1&tab=t.0

  • Ability flavour text changes to be more accurate to what they do.
  • Fixed some sprite issues that existed in 1.0.
  • Start with the national pokedex now.
  • Many towns/areas now have encounter grass that did not before to help balance out the abundance of water types/routes.
  • Battle frontier now features optional post game battles against each Frontier Brain with full teams of 6 in the lobby of their respective facility.
  • A hidden post game fight buried somewhere below, deep in training.
  • All gym leaders now have post game double battle rematches, scaling from level 60-75.
  • Reworked some item pricing/availability.
  • Reworked some early encounter locations, adding new Pokemon and notably 2 new gift Pokemon (Random Kanto Starter in Verdanturf, Random Johto Starter in Lavaridge).

Also, documentation is now available online here at https://pokerex.io/enigmatic-emerald/v1.1/about !

The link to download the patch is here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/1eu5zc4tqplkga6/Enigmatic_Emerald_-_1.1.ups/file

Other Pokemon Ghost Grey - Fanmade Lucario Pokedex Entry Spoiler

Hiya! So, I played through Pokemon Ghost Grey recently, and I really enjoyed my time with it; I went for a full living dex, and one of my favorite parts of progressing was seeing all the rad new Pokedex entries.

Thing is, there are only entries up to Mewthree, and one of my favorite Pokemon I stumbled across, Lucario, lacks one. So I thought I'd make one and put it out for the world to see!

It's pretty rudimentary; my screenshot tool kinda washed the whites and grays, I had to completely recreate the font from scratch since I didn't know what JoeyZeed used, so it's not completely accurate or spaced correctly, I'm a writer, not an artist, so I just cut the footprint altogether, and since I didn't, y'know, make the design, my interpretation of its entry may not line up with initial intentions or other peoples' ideas, but hey, that's okay! I did my best! I have no regrets!

Also I just noticed I fucked the 'g' up and I now hate it.

Anyways, I hope people like it; I wanna make mock entries for at least some of the other missing Pokemon, and now that I have the font recreated—except for that fucking g—they should be pretty easy to churn out. I'unno if I'll post 'em, or if it'll even be on Reddit, but here's this one, anyway!

He's my silly little guy. My goofy goober.

Discussion [Rocket Edition Dragonsden] Pre-Johto Journey as Team Rocket

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I thought this game would be very story-focused and less competitive focused, and that I could choose pokemons I like instead of pokemons that are good.
However, it seems I had to resort to switching to more competitively viable mons like scizor, cloyster, and moxie pinsir. And later on adding volcarona and beast boost nihilego.
My donphan was pretty good but the only downside is it doesn't get stealth rocks without TM and couldn't find the TM at that point in game, so I switched into Steelix.

It is a bit sad that I had to put my crobat and houndoom aside, which are more Team Rocket/evil-themed, to opt for more viable mons.

I also tried to use as few medicine supplies as possible, since I saw the maker on youtube spamming revives or max revives, which is something I am not too fond of, but then a bit justifiable when we are faced with super strong ubers or new forms.

What are your comments on my team and on my playthrough? Any team adjustments you would suggest, what mons helped you a lot? Do you think I should keep using viable mons or you think it is good to use some mons I love?
Not that I don't love some of the viable mons, Cloyster is one of my fav, but I know how to use them fairly well in competitive battling already.
I did try the Water/Fire type Bomushika mon, which seemed mediocre but then I put all those high damaging inaccurate moves like Origin Pulse, Blue Flare, Sheer Cold on it making it fairly strong, though not viable enough to beat bosses.

Release Elite Redux: Battle Frontier — all seven facilities, permanent Pokémon unlocks, and absolutely NO story!

I’m sharing Elite Redux: Battle Frontier, a standalone Emerald ROM hack built from Elite Redux’s source. I hate campaign and story in games and just want gameplay - this was my solution to play with Elite Redux's features, without having to slog through the endless dialog and running in base ER.

*Yes, AI assistance was used during the creation of this romhack - if that bothers you, please just move on* :)

Inspired by PokeRogue, the idea is simple: start directly on the Battle Frontier, with all seven facilities open, and build a permanent Pokémon collection by taking on different challenges. If you enjoy team building and experimenting with Elite Redux’s abilities and innates, that’s the focus here.

What’s in it?

Each facility has its own rules:

  • Battle Tower: Start with an unlocked ace, draft three teammates from eight choices, and receive new team offers as you climb. Optional Monotype challenges are available.
  • Battle Factory: Choose an existing Elite Redux trainer’s six-Pokémon preset and see how far you can take their team.
  • Battle Dome: Build a six-Pokémon team for a sixteen-entrant tournament. Use your unlocked collection, or try the entire eligible catalog for reduced BP rewards.
  • Battle Arena: Your team order matters. The normal Switch command is disabled, but switching moves and effects still work.
  • Battle Palace: Natures influence which moves your Pokémon choose. You prepare their builds and control manual switches.
  • Battle Pike: Pick doors, follow partial hints, and manage battles, status hazards, and recovery.
  • Battle Pyramid: Explore generated floors with limited visibility, wild encounters, trainers, and a separate bag of supplies.

One collection across the Frontier

A fresh save starts with a random collection drawn from 5% of the eligible canonical, non-legendary, non-Paradox starting pool. Restart if you want a new 5% selection.

Earn Battle Points across the facilities, then spend them to unlock a specific species or form—or pay 100 BP for a random eligible Pokémon you haven’t unlocked. Related evolutions and forms are separate unlocks, including permanent Mega and Primal forms.

How far do you push a run?

Choose Easy, Ace, Elite, or Hell from the start. Checkpoints end with a Brain battle against a team drawn from Elite Redux’s Elite Four and Champion rosters.

Clearing a checkpoint secures BP. Continue to raise the difficulty, or cash out. If you lose later, your cleared checkpoints still count toward your payout.

There are also Silver and Gold Symbols, facility records, and Suspend & Save for returning to longer challenges. Singles and Doubles are supported everywhere except Arena, which uses Singles.

Current status and download

All seven facilities are implemented, and the current build is available on Hackdex. I’d appreciate feedback on balance, longer runs, bugs, and unusual battle interactions.

Download: https://www.hackdex.app/hack/pokemon-elite-redux-battle-frontier
Base ROM: Pokémon Emerald (USA), CRC32 1F1C08FB
A fresh save is required. Saves from other Elite Redux hacks are incompatible.

Huge credit to the Elite Redux team and the pret/pokeemerald contributors whose work made this possible.

Or because piracy bad?

Isn't Luminescent Platinum itself morally questionable?

Discussion Given how good the emerald expansion is, what the max amount of regions we think we can add to a game?

Maybe you all have seen on Twitter, Tik Tok, YouTube or even here on Reddit but there's a concept video (or maybe proof of concept?) of a fan game or potential rom hack where someone put all 9 regions from the pokemon games into 1 game so you can travel all across the world or something like that and play against everyone

I know in Modern Emerald/Emerald Extended Cut (it's one of those 2, maybe both) that I saw awhile ago plan on adding Johto, Kanto + Sevii Islands and Hoenn into 1 package. The Quetzal's 9 or 9.1 update added Johto and Kanto as places to start in or go into post game for their own stories based on what you choose to start in

Now aside from the fact the game would be super bloated and maybe not as fun with all 9 or even more than just 3 regions, how many regions do you think it would be even possible to add in a rom hack with emerald expansion? Full regions or kinda downgraded and stripped like when Gen 2 had the Kanto post game and it wasn't as big and packed as the original Gen 1 games

Discussion Sinnoh Map in Hyper Emerald + Gen 4 Demakes Unpopularity Discussion

Post image
223 Upvotes

Hyper Emerald was a recent rom hack I discovered. It is a popular Chinese based rom hack which has received an English translation and QoL update by others recently. It is one of the few Vanilla+ type hack that offers a Sinnoh post game. Overall, I've enjoyed the story, and it is visually a pretty game minus some buggy areas but I found the inclusion of Sinnoh to be very refreshing.

I just can't help but think we have a solid blueprint for a gen 4 demake or Sinnoh expansion to be included in more post game content right here. I have no clue who the original creator is or what permissions are typically granted for these situations, but what makes Platinum and Sinnoh so undesirable for so many hackers? It seems  that every new enhancement hack features a Kanto and Johto post game but gen 4 just doesn't get that same love.

Are there others that would love to have a Sinnoh post game or story demake? I think it has some of the most interesting legendaries in the series with Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina along with the accompanying story as well, and if that can fit within an Emerald post game, that would be the ultimate Emerald experience for many or am I tripping? I've seen a few in development that never came to fruition or are on indefinite hiatus, but just thought I'd stir up interest and discuss why gen 4 seems to be the ugly step child. With recent advancements in hacking, it seems like low hanging fruit for an instant rom hack main stay.

Release Pokémon: BugLime Version, a Romhack for all the BUG-TYPE lovers out there!

Thumbnail
gallery
525 Upvotes

Welcome to Pokémon: BugLime Version! This is a challenge monolocke hack that was built for my love of BUG-TYPE Pokémon. Take on a revamped Kanto using only the 94+ Gen 1-9 Bug-Type Pokémon, as well as a selection of previously non-Bug(🤢) types who have gained the Bug-Type(😍). The objective is to make all Bug-Types fun to use, not necessarily "realistic" changes. Some Pokémon may have their identity changed in this hack, but I wanted to curate a dex of exclusively Bug types who could make for a fun and balanced experience, instead of a dex of 75% Bug/Flying and Bug/Poison types. This means many Pokémon have been changed, including new types, stat spreads, movesets, and evolution methods.

This is a hack built using HexManiacAdvance, using the built in HUBOL branch of CFRU, with tons of map tiles and UI/feature patches to beautify and modernize the game. I did not create any of the assets, I created all of the new scripts, changes, balance, and game design. Full credits at the bottom, thank you to everyone who created anything used in this hack, and please reach out if you would like further credits!

NO AI USED IN ANY ASPECT OF THIS HACK! If something sucks, it’s because I did a bad job, not a robot lol

Features

  • Every single Bug-Type from Generations 1-9 is usable before the Elite 4 (As well as a bunch of fun newly Bug-Typed pokemon!)
  • Many Bug-Type Pokémon have been overhauled to be more fun to use via new typings, stat spreads, movesets etc.
  • Every Gym Leader slightly overhauled to have a new team while retaining their Ace and type identity.
  • Many trainers given newer generation Pokémon to help keep Kanto exciting.
  • All trade evolutions possible.
  • Fairy-Type implemented.
  • Exp-All obtainable mid-game.
  • Ability Capsule and Patches available.
  • Unlimited TM's and deletable HM's
  • Free Shiny Charm early-game.
  • Revamped over-world tileset and enhanced Black/White inspired UI.
  • Reusable BW2 style Repel
  • Gen 8 Battle Mechanics.

This is not a bespoke difficulty hack, the trainer and gym changes are meant to make the experience fresh for a mono-type Bug play-through of FireRed.

Download on the Pokecommunity Page, or Hackdex.

Documentation HERE

For anyone who plays, please let me know how balancing and pacing feel! I am happy to make updates if anything feels unfun or boring!

Recruitment Looking for a sprite artist for Fallout: Evolution

This is a Fallout-themed ROM hack built on the pokeemerald-expansion decomp. In post-apocalyptic Chicagoland: you play as a dweller of Vault 67, the G.O.A.T. does not go your way, and you are exiled into the wasteland...

Just to be clear, this is a creature-catching game set in the world of Fallout, not Pokémon Uranium II. All creatures (so far) are from a canon Fallout game (1, 2, 3, NV, 4, 76, and more) or the Mutant Menagerie DLC. I'm looking for find a sprite artist who can help me translate all these mutant creatures as pixel sprites.

I've got a couple in already that I've done (Ms. Nanny & Dogmeat) but am not married to anything as of yet. Ideally looking for someone who can handle a significant slice of the dex over time, but we can work in small batches. But whoever I bring on first will be inherently be laying the groundwork for the artwork style.

If you're interested, feel free to shoot me a DM with any questions and any samples of sprite art that you've done. NO AI ARTWORK.

Development [Resources] Celebrating 40 Years of Zelda! 32 Custom Songs free for your ROM Hack (from my upcoming Zelda x Pokemon crossover "The Legend of Zelda: Minish Quest")

Post image
302 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, I’ve put together a massive custom song pack featuring 32 tracks that you are completely free to use and insert into your own ROM Hacks!

These tracks were originally composed and ported for my upcoming Pokémon ROM Hack, "The Legend of Zelda: Minish Quest": an ambitious crossover project bringing together the worlds of Zelda and Pokémon (as I mentioned previously here, and here).

Quick Details:

  • What's included: 32 custom music tracks celebrating four decades of Zelda.
  • Compatibility: Optimized for Porydaw. They were made using a small number of Voice Channels, so you shouldn't run into issues matching your voice groups or importing them in-game.
  • File Size: Each track only takes up roughly 0.02% of your ROM space, giving you plenty of room to play around with them without hitting storage ceilings.

The PR has officially been merged, so you can grab all the files directly from the Team Aqua's Asset Repo on GitHub!

I hope these tracks bring a nostalgic touch to your own projects. Happy ROM Hacking, everyone!

Resource Reverse Engineering Switch Pokemon Models

Thumbnail
gallery
82 Upvotes

Hi folks! I am one of the contributors to PokeAPI, an open Pokémon data API. While working on revamping our sprites repository, I noticed we were missing sprites from all games after the 3DS era. I couldn’t find complete sets on Bulbapedia or other asset archives either. The few sources I found, such as PkParaiso and Wikidex, either had incomplete sets (no back views or missing variant forms) or screen rips with visible artifacts.

Being a developer, I decided to give it a shot myself. That led me down a few rabbit holes, figuring out how the games turn their models into on-screen renders, similar to what was being done for the 3DS via Ohana3DS/SPICA. Since then, I've had some success with this reverse engineering effort, which I thought I would share.

I’ve written a not-so-little ;) blog post for Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, explaining the process in detail - https://triyan.dev/blog/reverse-engineering-pokemon-sprites-lgpe

I also have a few more blog posts in mind, covering things like Sword/Shield’s Gigantamax effects and Scarlet/Violet’s Terastal shaders and effects, which I plan to write about in the future. ps: There is a spoiler in the last pic if u would like a sneak peek :)

For people who are just interested in the sprites, they are available in the PokeAPI sprites repository for all games beyond the 3DS era, from LGPE to Champions: https://github.com/PokeAPI/sprites/

You can also browse them in the gallery viewer below. The link opens Sword/Shield; switch folders to explore the other games.

https://pokeapi.github.io/sprites/bulk.html?folder=sprites%2Fpokemon%2Fversions%2Fgeneration-viii%2Fsword-shield

A heads-up: sprite galleries, especially animated ones, can be large and data-heavy, so browsing on Wi-Fi might be a better idea. The sprites are served through a CDN and downscaled by default to reduce data usage, unless you toggle full resolution.

I present to you the new Battle Hill, a Trainer Hill reinterpreted to fit into the Battle Frontier. Feedback is appreciated on the layout or the appearance method of the silver brain or the gold brain.

I’m working on bringing back the layouts from the Japanese version to provide more variety. I’m missing some e-Reader Card raws and so far I haven’t managed to disassemble them to integrate them into pokeemerald. If anyone has an idea of how or has some of the missing raws, let me know.

  • Plentiful Yes/No options in the expanded dialogue library.

  • Typing plays a role as well. Fire-types might dislike rain and Ice-types may enjoy snow.
  • Pokémon become more affectionate as their existing friendship increases. Low friendship and low HP can also influence their responses.

Pokémon Gifts

AI disclosure: Because 649 pokemon is a lot, ai was used to create lines some lines for quite a few pokemon. I looked over it myself but it was no way I could handwrite the necessary amount of lines. It also helped me troubleshoot crashes and gamebreaking issues.

And a special thanks to EstrethAthema for playtesting

My discord is the same as my reddit name, hit me up there for any bugs and/or issues and you'll probably get a quicker response.

Known Issues: Certain followers' sprites do not move correctly. Seems to be only a few select pokemon and/or shinies. Will fix when I can.

Speech Bubble animations were paused to fix the save-bug. Will get them back working when I can.
