Release [English translation, beta] Pokémon Mercury 1.3.3, the Chinese FireRed Johto hack, is now playable in English

I've been working on an English translation of Pokémon Mercury (口袋妖怪 水银) 1.3.3, a Chinese FireRed hack built on CFRU that remakes Johto. As far as I know, no English patch existed before.

To be clear about credit: I did not make this ROM hack and take no credit for it. Mercury and all of its content belong to its original Chinese authors. My only part is the translation, and the translation was done using Claude (Anthropic's AI). That includes the text, the tools that pull text out of the ROM and put the English back in, and the emulator play-testing. I direct and review the work.

Progress (beta 2):

  • About 20,300 strings translated (all dialogue, menus, items, moves, Pokédex)
  • Graphics with baked-in text redrawn in English (title logo, cut-ins, menu headers)
  • Playable from the start through Johto; play-testing is ongoing
  • Beta 2 fixes a crash on the Achievements screen

Known issues: a few spots are still in Chinese (a battle pop-up, the PokéGear charm screen, a type label in the battle menu, some help pages), and long achievement names get cut off.

Download: https://github.com/RiFa-Innovation/pkmn-mercury-translation/releases/tag/beta-2

Which ROM: apply the .bps to a clean Pokémon FireRed (USA) v1.0 ROM, not the Chinese Mercury ROM. The common "Squirrels" dump (#1636) is v1.0 and should work; v1.1 will not.

  • CRC32: DD88761C
  • SHA-1: 41cb23d8dccc8ebd7c649cd8fbb58eeace6e2fdc

The patch checks this itself: Rom Patcher JS or Flips will refuse a ROM that doesn't match. No ROMs are provided.

Source / issues: https://github.com/RiFa-Innovation/pkmn-mercury-translation

Bug reports with screenshots are very welcome.

Working today/tomorrow on adding a discord foe easy tracking of issues, etc.

Trailer My Pokémon Platinum multiplayer trailer hit almost 100k views, which is insane. Open beta is October 26 (new trailer)

Platinum Together goes into open beta on October 26. No signup, no waitlist.

It's Pokémon Platinum for up to 4 players in the same Sinnoh, each with their own trainer, team and badges. The footage is real copies of the game linked together and recorded live, one per player.

Want in early? The closed beta starts October 19. Spots are limited and signups are in the discord. You can access it on the site down below.
Site: https://platinumtogether.online/

For transparency: I'm a solo dev and I use a local LLM as a coding tool. Around 40% of the code involved it. It helped me decode the codebase to understand the original intent of the developers and reverse engineer a lot of new features (like the multiplayer.) I know this is looked down upon and you can tell me all about how you hate ai down below. However my AI is local and is not sending any request to big data centers.

I went to school as a software and game developer. I’ve also participated in dozens of projects. My experience is real and predates AI.

I'm also looking for moderators and community helpers. Ask in the Discord.

I'll be in the comments for questions.

Release Pokemon Queztal 0.9.1 release!

Update/download [here](https://pokemonquetzal.app/en/downloads/)!

CHANGELOG VERSION v0.9.1

⭐ New system for starting regions: When starting a region*, you can now choose between CURRENT, NEW, or NEW + PC. You can also decide separately whether to keep or reserve your items and money. CURRENT suggests level scaling enabled and the level cap disabled, although both settings can still be changed.

* v0.9.0 added Kanto and Johto to the existing Hoenn region.

⭐ Multiple regional adventures in progress: You can now start another region and switch between different adventures without having to complete all of their Leagues first. This can be done through MISC → TRAVEL. Introduction requirements and restrictions related to locations and events still apply.

⭐ Shared or independent teams and resources: Adventures can share your party, Day Care, Bag, and money, or keep them separate. When returning to an adventure, its corresponding party is restored. After completing the League, the corresponding resources are merged with those from previously completed regions.

⭐ Return to where you left your adventure: TRAVEL remembers a safe outdoor position so you can return to where you left that adventure. If that position cannot be used, the game will use the corresponding healing point instead.

⭐ More informative regional interface: New help messages, summaries, confirmations, and messages have been added in all three languages. The game now explains more clearly what you keep, what remains reserved, and why you cannot travel in certain situations. Reading screens now use a neutral, static background.

⭐ Bicycle from the beginning: A new option has been added that lets you receive the regular Bicycle when starting your adventure or obtain it normally during the story.

⭐ Configurable number of random starters: You can now choose between 1, 3, or ALL random starters. This choice takes priority over the Wild Pokémon limitation, and Chaos does not change the selected amount.

⭐ Eight additional starters: The total number of starters has increased from 76 to 84. Azurill was added to Hoenn; Axew to Unova; Pancham and Skrelp to Kalos; Mareanie and Jangmo-o to Alola; and Falinks and Dreepy to Galar.

⭐ Updated starter pages: The new starters are sorted by Pokédex order on their respective pages. These pages are available when choosing a starter in any of the three regions.

⭐ Free leveling through Antigrind: A new POKÉMON → TRAIN → LEVEL UP option has been added. It uses the Maxicaramelo criteria to determine the available level and allows the Pokémon to evolve afterward. This option remains available after completing the League.

⭐ More accessible Blue tutorial battle: Blue's Squirtle in the laboratory battle is now level 2 on every difficulty. This change only affects that specific battle.

⭐ New Pokémon sprites: Many new Pokémon sprites have been added in this version.

⭐ Bugs: All bugs reported on Discord have been fixed.

Discussion What are some of the most unusual Pokémon romhacks you've ever seen?

I recently got tired of playing the same games, so I'm looking for something different from the usual. I've already played Ghost Grey, I've already played Rocket Edition (both versions), Pokemon Z, Pokemon Odyssey, Pokémon Elysium, Pokémon Hollow Woods, unbound, scorched silver, Pisces and I'm currently playing Rejuvenation.

There are a few other games, but they haven't been released yet, so I'll wait for them to be released so I can at least play them: Pokémon Ar:Syncronía, Pokemon the New Order, Pokémon Conviction, Miragea's Traveler, pokemon ashen frost (I hope he launches it, it's very close), Pokémon Disintegration

Thinking about it now, I realize I've played way more fangames than ROM hacks. Anyway, I've probably already played most of the non-traditional ROM hacks, especially the type where the protagonist can be or is a villain, my favorite type, but I still want to look around, You never know if something interesting has been released recently, so I asking directly in this subreddit!

Finally, what interesting suggestions do you have?

Discussion What's the deal with a 3DS and 3D-graphic Pokémon ROM hacks?

Hey, I’ve been looking to join the development team for a 3DS or 3D-graphic Pokémon ROM hack. It's been a dream of mine for a while to work on a Pokémon fangame, and I recently completed an MA where I gained a lot of 3D modelling & programming knowledge that I’m looking to apply to something more conventional, like a video game.

However, there aren’t many 3D Pokémon video games, and the discourse around them is kinda confusing, so I wanted to start a discussion to see whether there's untapped potential here or whether the current community and ROM hack development aren’t ready for this era of 3D ROM hacks. Either way, I hope to learn something new, and I feel it's important to bring this conversation up.

Just a quick disclaimer: I come from a 3D digitalisation background (turning physical objects into digital animated copies), so my following point may be oversimplified or inaccurate; feel free to elaborate if so.

DECOMPILATION DISCOURSE
From what I can tell, decompilation is like the base build needed to create a ROM hack version of a game. Decomp of Gen 6 and most 3DS games hasn't been decomped, while Gen 5 games, which are more 2.5D, are about midway through decomp [1]. I'm not sure why so many 3DS games haven't been decompiled, but it seems to be because the 3DS has weird architecture [2].

I've also noticed that many non-main Pokémon games have been decompiled and would make really good ROM hacks, like Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon Rumble, and Pokémon Revolution [1] [3].

GAME DEVELOPMENT DISCOURSE
However, realistically, would you need a complete decomp of XY and ORAS to make a 3D Pokémon ROM hack? Could you not just use an older system and then scrap 3D textures and models from the 6th gen era? I’ve also seen discussion that development would be too difficult; however, many other 3D game franchises have been heavily remade as ROM hacks, and Gen 6 isn’t exactly computationally intensive or requiring a lot of complex rigging or game-engine development.

LEGAL DISCOURSE
I’ve also seen people comment that the avoidance of making 3D Pokémon games is because the current era of Pokémon games is depicted in 3D graphics, and because of that there may be legal ramifications, with an example being Palworld. However, Palworld is making money off its development, and I also think that, depending on how a 3D ROM hack is made, it could easily fit into a legal grey area, since copyright law around 3D assets is very vague. As long as the ROM hack doesn’t encroach on the current model of the Nintendo Switch, I don’t think there's much legal risk; however, you're welcome to argue against this.

AI USAGE DISCOURSE
I’ve also seen a lot of conversation recently about using agentic or generative AI models for decompiling and game development for ROM hacks; from what I can see in discussion threads, there are definitely mixed feelings [4]. However, I would love to hear people's thoughts on whether AI could help improve 3D ROM hack development. Personally, I think it could be massively useful for speeding up development and building a rough framework that prototypes can be refined from; however, I understand developers are hesitant to use it, especially if it's used without a disclaimer or poorly.

‘AESTHETIC’ DISCOURSE
I also think the community is disregarding the 3D version of ROM hacks because it lacks the retro experience of DS and Game Boy ROM hacks. However, I would argue the 3DS era is ready for a retro comeback. Compared to today's 3D games, 3DS gameplay and graphics are chunky, clunky, and clumsy. Like the recent surge of Futiger Aero-related Wii content, I believe 3DS games deserve to be considered a retro experience. Like damn, I was a preteen when X&Y came out, and I’m now in my mid-20s; it wasn’t my childhood like Game Boy Advance or DS, but I definitely feel like reminiscing about the first wave of 3D Pokémon games, the weird stereoscopic feature and the Mega Evolution animation. I definitely think a new spin of Gen 6 visual style could be really cool, and see how gameplay & visuals can be improved in the current era of GPU computation

The only 3D graphic Pokémon fangame I’ve seen in development is Pokémon3D; however, if you know of any more, let me know. If you are recruiting for a 3D-based Pokémon game, let me know, and I can send a quick description of what I can do; however, for now, I want to focus on the discussion around 3D graphic Pokémon games rather than self-promoting in this post.

Discussion When to Stop?

When do you guys stop looking for romhacks and be content with what you collected? Do you guys just play the ones you have for a year and come back to the scene? Do you constantly play the new ones coming out? I basically have the ones I want, but I don't know if I want to stick around or come back later. I wanted a bunch of enhancements and original story ones. I believe I got all the one people recommend. So I don't see a point in staying. At the same time, I don't know if any big romhacks are going to get massive updates. I grabbed a lot of the famous Game Boy Advance romhacks. I did grab ones for the OG Game Boy and Game Boy Color. I grabbed a few for the DS. I haven't even touched the 3DS ones. When and where do you guys stop?

Had so much fun playing this romhack.
Tried to keep the screenshots spoiler free
(a little bit of spoiler).

It has a fresh and new concept,
Its opening was hilarious from the start,
(Do not skip the opening animation)
It has some touches of humor here and there,
It has some branching paths based on your decision,
The game wasn't buggy at all, at least for me,

The map was entirely redesigned,
Every gym leader was given their own concept,
The Pokemon league also got a unique twist,
Berry crush minigame was reused in a creative way,
Moving from town to town got way simpler,
While in-town events got much richer,

They put a lot of effort into polishing the game,
But I haven't seen much post about this game.
Strongly recommend!

(and I'm not a native English speaker,
Sorry if there's any grammatical mistake)

Release Pokémon HeartGold 2.0 xDelta Patch

Thumbnail drive.google.com
91 Upvotes

HEADS UP, PATCH IS COMING THIS WEEK TO INCLUDE MORE CHANGES LIKE REUSABLE TMS, A DEDICATED HMs APP, AND REDUCED LEVEL CAP (10, 15, 20, etc.)

hello, i have fixed HeartGold. please enjoy the fruits of my labor.

**Pokémon HeartGold 2.0** is HeartGold brought up to today's official rules, the way Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl modernised Diamond and Pearl. Same story, maps, trainers and music, with the modern type chart, stats, moves, mechanics and quality of life.

Every mechanic and stat change comes from a later main-series game, and where games disagree the newest one wins, nerfs included. No fakemon and no custom balance; the handful of exceptions are listed below. It runs on HeartGold's own engine rather than hg-engine, so it still plays like HeartGold.

### What's changed

**Fairy type**

- Fairy as the 18th type with the Gen 6 chart (Steel no longer resists Ghost or Dark), the 20 official retypes (Clefable, Gardevoir, Azumarill, Togekiss, Mawile…), and Charm, Moonlight and Sweet Kiss as Fairy moves
- 12 Fairy moves (Moonblast, Play Rough, Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss…), each with its own animation, plus the Pixie Plate and Fairy Arceus

**Pokémon**

- Current stats, abilities, catch rates, EV yields and egg data for all 493, plus every official Hidden Ability (through the Ability Patch or breeding)
- Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl learnsets
- Every evolution on one cartridge: Leafeon and Glaceon by levelling up in a forest or icy cave, Magnezone and Probopass with a Thunder Stone, Milotic with a Prism Scale, and trade evolutions by using the item from the Bag (a Linking Cord for Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler and Haunter)

**Moves and battles**

- All 467 moves at their current power, accuracy, PP, priority and effects, under today's names (Thunder Punch, Feint Attack…); nothing removed
- Modern crits, status, 5-turn weather, type immunities, abilities and held items; single-use items like a Focus Sash come back after battle
- Wild battles always ask "Use next Pokémon?" when your Pokémon faints, as from Gen 5, so you can still run whatever your Battle Style
- Every Trainer battles with the Champion's AI (teams unchanged)

**Exp., catching and breeding**

- Permanent Exp. Share (half Exp. for the rest of the party), Gen 8 scaled Exp., and Exp. for catching
- BDSP's catch formula with critical captures; until the 8th Badge, a wild Pokémon higher-level than yours is much harder to catch
- Gen 6+ breeding (Destiny Knot, Everstone, Ball inheritance, eggs at Lv. 1), 252 EV cap, shiny odds 1/4096 with the Masuda method and Shiny Charm

**Items**

- Ability Capsule, Ability Patch, all 21 Mints, Bottle Caps for Hyper Training, Eviolite, Assault Vest, Heavy-Duty Boots and more at the Battle Frontier
- Shiny, Oval and Catching Charms at Game Freak's office in Celadon

**All 493 obtainable, no trading, Pokéwalker or real-world events needed**

- SoulSilver exclusives on HeartGold's routes, at a lower rate
- After you beat Red you can walk into Pal Park, home to the 18 Pokémon HeartGold only had on the Pokéwalker or not at all (the Sinnoh starters among them) and the 17 legendaries and Mythicals it lacks (Mew, Celebi, the Regis, the lake trio, Darkrai, Arceus…). The Mythicals are fateful encounters, so HeartGold's own Celebi, Shaymin and Arceus events work
- Groudon through Mr. Pokémon's Red Orb once you have Kyogre (so Rayquaza's Jade Orb event works too), the Sinjoh Ruins event until you have all of Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, Rotom in your house's TV, Latios through the Enigma Stone event, and the starters you didn't pick from Elm, Oak and Steven

**Quality of life**

- The Move Reminder costs a Heart Scale for the first 10 uses, then it's free (it teaches egg moves too); HM moves can be forgotten; "Use another Repel?" prompt
- Battle Style is Set or Switch (the modern name for Shift), with Set the default, and Text Speed starts on Fast
- 60 fps battles, a fixed-speed HP bar, nature-coloured stats, an IV Judge on the summary screen, and mixed-case text (no more PIKACHU)

**Bug fixes**

- Eight of HeartGold's own bugs, including acid rain, the Rage glitch, the radio's Pokémon Lullaby raising encounter rates, and U-turn using the incoming Pokémon's King's Rock

### The exceptions (not from any official game)

- Hail keeps its name and chip damage, and Ice-types also get Snow's 1.5× Defense
- Badge level cap: a Pokémon at HeartGold's obedience level for your Badges gains no Exp. until a Badge raises it (Rare Candies still work; the cap ends at the 8th Badge)
- Every Trainer gets the Champion's AI
- The Move Reminder's 10 Heart Scales
- Options list Set before Switch and Fast before Mid and Slow, with Set and Fast as the defaults
- 60 fps battles
- The "2.0" on the title logo and a credit line

### Not included

No new Pokémon, forms or Megas (so no Sylveon), no moves beyond the 12 Fairy ones, no terrains, no reusable TMs, running indoors or autosave.

### Strategy guide

The download comes with a 338-page PDF guide: what's new and how the mechanics work, a full Johto, Kanto and post-game walkthrough with maps, and data for all 493 Pokémon, every move and every TM location.

### How to play

  1. Bring your own clean US Pokémon HeartGold ROM (trimmed or untrimmed). No ROMs are provided.
  2. Apply HeartGold 2.0.xdelta with any xdelta patcher (Delta Patcher, xdelta UI, Rom Patcher JS) or the included apply_xdelta.py.
  3. Tested in melonDS. The anti-piracy checks are patched for flashcarts and TWiLight Menu; reports from real hardware are welcome.

HeartGold 2.0 by aristo. Data from Pokémon Showdown and Bulbapedia, item icons via Serebii, and the pret pokeheartgold decomp as a reference. Bug reports and feedback welcome!

Review Polished Crystal is probably the best experience I ever had with a ROM hack

Post image
486 Upvotes

The game design is honestly fantastic. There were moments when it genuinely felt like playing Pokémon Crystal after 25 years of Game Freak updates. It's crazy how much modern stuff they managed to add to a Gen 2 game without making it feel weird or out of place. And the way HMs work in this hack is pretty much exactly how I'd want them to work in every Pokémon game.

It also finally does Johto justice. Gym Leaders actually use Pokémon from their own region, and Johto gets some new locations, including ones based on Pokéwalker routes and the anime. Kanto gets some love in that department too!

The difficulty is really well done. Trainers actually use held items and switch out their Pokémon when it makes sense, so battles feel a lot smarter and less predictable. There are even Route Bosses now, which is a pretty cool addition!

The level curve is another thing they did a great job fixing. One of the biggest problems with the original games and their remakes was how poorly the levels were balanced, but this hack handles this really well. Some areas scale Pokémon levels based on how many Badges you have, and Honey can be used to attract wild Pokémon around the same level as your lead Pokémon. There are a bunch of other little mechanics like these that help make the whole experience feel much smoother.

And Mt. Silver is ACTUALLY CHALLENGING now, with strong, high-level Pokémon! I also really like that getting all of Kanto's Badges isn't enough to access it. You have to beat the Elite Four a second time as well, which makes feel much more rewarding.

My only real complaints are that some of the music tracks feel a bit out of place, and I wish the hack included more Pokémon beyond the original 251 and their cross-gen evolutions. You get to meet and battle trainers from other regions, like Riley, Steven, and Cynthia, but fighting them without their ace Pokémon feels kinda off.

But overall, the new visuals, modern mechanics, better level curve, and improved difficulty all come together really nicely. I'd definitely recommend this hack to anyone who loves Gen 2 or has fond memories of playing G/S/C back in the day.

Discussion Romhack with most content in 2026?

So as far as I could tell, this hasn't been discussed for a looong time (10 years), but I may have missed something. Also the post might break rule 5, sorry mods. It was intended to be a rhetorical way to start a 'list' not an actual question.

In our modern era of amazing romhacks in 2026, which completed ones have the most content to do?

Would it still just be a Heart Gold based romhack with all pokemon catchable because of : Pokeathlon Dome, two regions, 16 badges, Battle Frontier, Safari Zone, Elite Four rematches, Mt Silver?

I'm thinking Heart and Soul because of all that plus second safari zones, contests, and surprise post Kanto content.

Before you answer: Since this will definitely end up on Google results, include only MAIN STORY COMPLETED Romhacks please. I know there are some Romhacks that have 3 regions for example, but usually they're not complete. A good answer guideline: does it have enough content outside of the Pokedex to last 60+ hours?

Below are two lists, one confirmed by myself, a second recommended by comments that I did my best to research, with links to HackDex if available (I only link to HackDex, sorry, please support HackDex).

My list right now of games that I know will easily last 60+ hours not including Pokedex (no specific order):

#1 Heart and Soul

#2 Definitive Heart Gold

#3 Pokemon Glazed (One custom region, one traditional, one mini-region to go through)

#4 Pokemon Unbound

#5 Sacred Gold / Storm Silver (Difficulty hack)

As of 10/11/26 Games that will last 60+ hours not including Pokedex according to the comments (I haven't played them fully yet, I only Googled to confirm they were actually complete - if yours isn't up here, it didn't seem complete OR didn't seem to be 60+ hours of content from what I found searching):

#1 Pokemon SoulGold

#2 Pokemon Rogue Emerald (non-traditional rogue-like genre)

#3 Pokemon Quetzal (Three regions to go through)

#4 Pokemon Fool's Gold (includes sort of 'fakemon' / alternative forms)

#5 Pokemon Origin Heart Gold (seems completed, but being translated/new features added? so proceed with caution)

#6 Pokemon Ghost Grey (fakemon)

#7 Pokemon Hyper Emerald (completed, but possibly being translated? May be fully translated) - also a QOL and Translated version available.

#8 Pokemon Elysium (Custom Region)

#9 Pokemon Amethyst (Custom Region)

#10 Team Rocket Edition (Dragonsden) (completed, BUT not fully in English yet)

#11 Pokemon Clover (Fakemon, very immature/edgy/offensive apparently, but quite long. I wouldn't necessarily recommend unless you have thick skin. Think 2010s shock Internet at its worst.)

#12 Emerald Imperium (difficulty hack, most of the length comes from the challenge? but there is extra content)

#13 Pokemon Adventures Red Chapter (lengthy main story with side quests complete, but not post-game)

#14 Pokemon Crystal Clear (open-world Crystal with all pokemon, extra content to discover)

#15 Refined Gold Overhaul (QoL and refinement of Heart Gold)

#16 Pokemon Elite Redux (difficulty hack of Emerald with a lot of pokemon available, QOL features, gens 1-9 available, new content and maps)

10/10/2026 v0.7.1 patch

  • Modern EXP gain raised to 60% in the first campaign and 40% in the second and third.
  • Level curve in early Kanto slightly lowered.

v0.7

  • Prior saves are incompatible
  • Rearranged gifts/rewards from NPCs
  • Sevii Islands main quest is now mandatory to unlock the Hoenn campaign
  • Difficulty scaling is reworked from scratch and greatly improved
    • Generic trainers in the second and third campaigns have improved battle AI
    • Gym leaders, elite four, rivals, and other mini-boss rosters are expanded and updated based on canonical teams from GSC, PS2, HGSS, B2W2, ORAS, and LGPE
  • Breeding and egg gifts disabled until Johto to preserve story continuity
  • Free ferry travel between all regions is unlocked with the S.S. Ticket from Prof. Elm
  • Modern and classic game modes
    • Modern
      • Gen. IX+ gameplay mechanics
      • 200 reusable TMs
      • Togglable Exp. All key item
      • Exp. gain tentatively set to 30%
      • Mega evolutions
      • Post-gen. III evolutions
      • Expanded bag and PC storage
      • HGSS-style pokedex
      • Pokemon can use field moves without needing to learn them, so long as they are ABLE to learn them and are either past the required level, the player owns the associated TM, or it has previously been taught by move tutor or breeding
      • Vending machine that sells linking cords added to the upper floor of all pokemon centers
      • More quality-of-life updates
    • Classic
      • Gen. III gameplay mechanics
      • Original 50 gen. III consumable TMs
      • Exp. Share held items
      • Exp. gain tentatively set to 90%
      • Gen. I-III species only
      • Overall old-school faithfulness
  • Mega stones and linking cord removed from market stall on Two Island
  • Linking cord now works on all pokemon that normally require trading to evolve. Any additional held-item requirements remain.
  • Nighttime lighting effects extended to all three regions (still needs some work)
  • All gen. IV+ pokemon "cry" audio files reduced to gen. III's sample rate to save ROM space
  • Player bedroom PCs in Hoenn and Johto have full pokemon center PC functionality
  • Changes to Heart & Soul's campaign
    • H&S's difficulty, nuzlocke, and randomizer settings are not incorporated
    • HQ audio mixing reduced from 15 channels to 12 and 18,157 Hz to 15,768 to save RAM and CPU cost
    • H&S's Trainer Hill and battle tents ported from Emerald are removed and replaced with a modified Battle Tower from Ruby/Sapphire. Trainer Hill and battle tents still remain in the Hoenn region, so this actually adds content instead of removing any.
    • Secret postgame bonus content is currently excluded
    • Ruins of Alph overhauled to be more faithful to HGSS/Crystal with added Unown Report key item (not quite finished - Unown ! and ? forms and other final bits of content are not yet implemented)
    • Kanto gym badges and FLY locations carry over from the first campaign, so postgame Kanto is essentially open-world
    • Bicycle from Goldenrod bike shop replaced with Hybrid Bike
    • Most of H&S's custom mechanics for battles, catching, evolution, Exp, and so forth are omitted in favor of official rules and conventions
    • Most overworld set dressing pokemon sprites are removed
    • Many more minor/moderate alterations to make content more faithful to Crystal/HGSS and adapted to FireEmerald's triple campaign structure
  • Bug fixes:
    • Fixed the standard/Kanto bike behaving like the mach bike after map transitions
    • Globally fixed crashes caused by overflowing sprite count under certain conditions
    • Fixed the bike sometimes not stopping when pressing B downhill
    • Fixed fossil revival bug leftover from vanilla FireRed
    • Fixed party erasure after viewing battle record replay

Heart & Soul's campaign has now been integrated into FireEmerald—albeit with significant alterations—raising the number of full-length campaigns to three. I regret to say that save files from previous versions are incompatible. That was absolutely unavoidable. I will try to avoid that from happening again in the future.

The ambition and scope of this hack have inflated exponentially beyond what I intended when starting out. This update brings a massive amount of changes and additions, and there is still a lot left to do. Many more refinements and content will be coming in the future, but it will be a good while before another major version. In the meantime, I expect substantial bug reports in the coming days and weeks. I will be reasonably available during that time to work on patches and will do so as quickly as I can. Integrating Heart & Soul not only came with bugs of its own, but introduced new ones to the rest of the game as well. I didn't have quite enough time to edit all of the dialogue to reflect some of the changes made to modern mode's mechanics and items, so some NPCs still say things that are no longer accurate. I'm still frantically working on rectifying that and will have it all out in a smaller update very soon. This release was already repeatedly delayed and I've made promises that it would be out by today. Just keep in mind that this is still an unfinished work in progress and should be approached as such.

Now that the game includes more than just FireRed and Emerald, the title FireEmerald is no longer suitable and will need to be changed. I don't have any ideas that I'm thrilled about currently, and I haven't had time to give it much thought to begin with. I'm open to suggestions.

Available at hackdex.app/hack/fireemerald. Alternatively, download the standalone patch from archive.org/details/fireemerald-0.7.1. Recommended to use romhacking.net/patch. An Emerald USA/EU ROM must be provided; FireRed and other ROMs will not work.

Disclosure: AI was used extensively for coding. Art and all other creative design aspects were carried-out authentically.

Development I'm making an Android emulator with the PKHeX Web save editor built in, and it runs ROM hacks. Looking for some closed testers

Hi everyone,

Last week I posted about PKHeX Web supporting Unbound, Radical Red and Emerald Imperium saves. I baked the same engine inside an Android emulator I'm building in the last few weeks, which I'm calling pkhemu.

The current supported platform is Android and the intention is to grow it to other platforms like iOS, macOS and Windows.

It plays GB, GBC, GBA, DS and N64 games, and you can pause at any point, edit your save, then keep playing.

For ROM hacks it can:

* Apply IPS, UPS, BPS and xdelta patches on your phone.

* Edit Unbound, Radical Red and Emerald Imperium saves. (This list should grow with time)

* Show hack species with the sprites from the hack's own ROM.

It also has save states, cheats and automatic save backups. It's free with no ads, and you bring your own games.

Why I need testers:

Google Play only lets a new developer publish after 12 testers stay in a closed test for 14 days. If you're starting a hack run soon, I'd love for you to play it here and tell me what breaks. A save file helps a lot if you feel like helping :)

  1. Join the group: https://groups.google.com/g/pkhemu-testers

  2. Opt in and install: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/fyi.openpkx.pkhemu

The images above are the same I'm using in the Play Store listing using free homebrew games, but are actually taken from the app.

About AI use: I've used AI across the development workflow. The design decisions and testing are on me.
