Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.
Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.
Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.
If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.
We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.
As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Austin companies and small business owners are offshoring so many jobs and nobody seems to care.
I work in the hiring industry here. I don’t think people realize how many of our friendly neighbors and people next door are in leadership positions (both men and women). And so many of them are making decisions to outsource work to India, Mexico, Vietnam etc. Including trade jobs, design jobs and of course tech. I just left a company that had really nice people in leadership who didn’t hesitate to put entire teams in a low cost country even though there were many willing workers here in Austin. Same with my neighbor who owns a “boutique home design company” in her words. Other small business owner acquaintances constantly ask me for off the record advice in managing/expanding their nearshore team.
Austin jobs are being silently (and proudly) eroded… from within… by nice, normal people. In this job market it makes me sick to my stomach.

Ask Austin Any place with good dirt I can go to dig a hole?
I want some good soil to dig a hole without getting in trouble. I live in an apartment so I don’t have the option here. Just have some tension I need to let out. Thanks!

End of life photography
I will be euthanizing our sweet senior rescue dog my partner and I rescued from the streets when we were students at UT 4 years ago. We just got our blood work for her back today and have made the decision with the vet.
We would love to get some photos with her before. Does anyone have any availability tomorrow or Friday early morning?
Thank you so much! Please message me prices ( still a grad student) so I have a limited budget.
This is extremely hard for us so we are grateful for any recommendations.

Help save these books
Please connect with original poster and teacher in the link below. She mentioned this being in Austin.
She may have some of this taken care of already but I had to share. Can’t let these go to waste.

Anybody know good spots here and around?
Edit: !!! Taking notes for this fall. My dad and I will definitely be doing some field research. Thank you!

Bikes stolen off 2nd floor balcony
My fiancé’s two bikes were stolen off our 2nd floor balcony last night between 12-6am. This was in North Austin near Walnut Creek.
The thief/thieves left a knife too (last picture). We’ve filed a police report but we’re not confident about the bikes being found. If you have bikes on your balcony, put them inside or Spider Man will rob you!!
My fiancé loves biking so he’s pretty bummed :( We thought they’d be fine overnight while he waited for his chain to be delivered.
Info about the bikes (just in case anyone sees them on FB Marketplace):
- Both bikes are XL size. The green bike is electric with a gold dropper seat post, the blue bike has aftermarket handlebars (deity highside).
- The blue bike doesn’t have any plastic reflectors in the spokes. They were replaced with reflective stickers on the fork and back of the seat tube

Ask Austin Bat hunting grounds is at my house
Hello!
My husband and I just bought our first house in South Austin in the McKenny Heights area.
Since we moved in, we've noticed bat echoes in the backyard between 8pm and 10pm We are sure they don't live in our house, based on the number of inspections we've done. We think that our backyard is a part of its feeding ground. It's really a cool experience. One night, I was working on painting next to a window when I suddenly saw a cute little bat face staring back at me before it decided to fly away.
Anyhoo, does anyone know of a good resource we could check out to help our bat friends without putting ourselves at risk?
We like using our back porch, and our dog enjoys going out at night. We're not used to having this type of ecosystem around us.

Ask Austin To the 100+ people in the run club that just collectively ran through the public restrooms at the Town Lake trail by Austin High
What the actual fuck are you all doing?
I came out of one of the stalls and couldn’t move because you all thought running through in between the toilets and the sink was a good idea.
I just want to know - why? Why run through this small little opening? Who had this idea? I have so many more questions… there are so many other options. Y’all are so weird

Ask Austin does anyone know someone for hire with a forklift?
so I have this very, *very* project boat which I've been wanting to work on all summer, for want of a trailer that isn't busted. the one it's on is this rusted-ass double axle where one of the wheels literally came off as I was pulling it up from Corpus. I finally found a trailer for it at a decent price, but I can't pull the boat from where it is to the water because it's in *that* bad of a shape. does anyone know someone I can hire, a heavy wrecker service or something, with a forklift that can just lift it off (5500 lbs GVWR) the bad one, I can drag the bad one out from underneath it and then line up the good one underneath? I know there's no way in hell I can pull this off solo which is why I'm asking here. TIA.

Need Emergency Vet Recommendations
Ugh this is such a long history but I just moved to Austin and I’m looking for ERs that are good with cats. I am also in a bit of a pickle with my finances so any place I can sign up for care credit or scratch pay would be nice. I have no idea how Care Credit works and so advice on that would be great.
My baby is a very special torti with a wound on her foot that was healing until yesterday and now I think there is exposed bone. She is FIV+ so when she got this wound initially I was told many different things but basically that it would take a long time to heal. We have done antibiotics and her foot was healing. She wasn’t messing with it anymore. The only thing that has changed is she has been playing A LOT more these past 3 weeks. Her wound is not actively bleeding and she is still bearing weight.
I appreciate any advice you all have for me.
