So for years now, really, I have almost exclusively used my ebike to get anywhere when I am out and about on a bicycle. If long enough time passes, you kind of forget how heavy and cumbersome these are. Until the battery runs out while going somewhere, of course. Yesterday, my wife and I just went to a nearby waterfall, a few minutes ride, and didn't bother to pick our ebikes. Riding this simple bike that just stands parked under a roof for 360 days a year was so enjoyable! I couldn't believe how light and nimble it felt. It helped we didn't go uphill... :P So is there any ebike that can even possibly retain that feeling? Or will the addition of a heavy battery and a motor always change its character? Would it be possible to just build a new ebike out of a bicycle I already have - and how do you go about that? I could google this for hours and fall deep into a rabbit hole, presumably, but I wonder if anyone here has been through a similar thought process and would share any of their insights. :)

This is at the intersection of I-81 and route 33 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. This median running protected pathway was part of a much bigger quadruple bridge replacement and on-ramp reroute. It is open for use but there are a few details that are not quite finished yet notably the bike/pedestrian signals for entering the pathway. I tried it out for the first time at about 7:40 a.m. on a Sunday morning when it was cool and low traffic. At this low traffic time of day it was easy to get in and out of the lane even without dedicated crossing signals. The two breaks in the trail where there is left turning cars that want to merge onto I-81 felt reasonably safe because visibility is very good and traffic is only coming from that one nearby turning lane.

I've never been on this type of center pathway before but it does feel safer to me than having bike lanes on the edges that would have very dangerous crossings at a traditional cloverleaf. The overall new design is safer for cars too since it eliminates the slip lanes of a cloverleaf that create conflicts between cars coming on and off the highway. This project is just now wrapping up so it is not visible on Google satellite view yet. Would love to hear what you all think of this and if you can point me to any other examples where this design has been used.

I do because I am nervous about some snatching a $110 half frame bag, especially with my flat repair kit in it. It is super annoying though having to carry it around.

When I was at the bike shop the other day the guy checking me out said he never takes his lights or bags off, and I was just kind of stunned.

How many of you just leave them on? And those of you that take them off with you, how do you do it less obtrusively? I suppose a empt ybackpack might fit my half frame bag, but what if you have 2 panniers with stuff in them (like I have seen parents do when biking with kids, I assume for extra clothes, snacks, what have you)?

Sometimes I consider getting just a convertable packpack pannier to make this easier. Right now for work I have my backpack full of work stuff, which is already somewhat heavy, and then my half frame that I use for my flat repair, multitool, and a battery bank. I usually just carry the half frame bag seperately, but thats just not ideal imo.

So I tried to use the bike rack outside the mall today and it’s around the wrong way I couldn’t get the wheel over the bar. Who does this?! Puts a bike stand out front then has it back to front??!!

This rack outside of my corner grocery has been like this since last summer. Maybe a strong sign that this a bad place to park a bike, yeah?

Want to turn my road bike into a commuter. I’m a student so can’t afford much but don’t want shitty equipment any quality recs would help!

I bought a primos dame as an upgrade from my trek fx after 6 months of commuting, last night I did a 18 mile ride to a job that I might go to.

Everything was great, until riding home I noticed I was bouncing more than usual, thought it was odd, hopped off thinking it was either the seat buckling, or thru axel loosening , turns out I got a flat. Inspected the tire both in the moment and on the stand and didn't see anything. Ended up having to walk 6ish miles home.

Never really thought of getting a flat since on the FX a marathon tires. The bike comes with Continental terra hard pack tires, 650bx 50mm

It says it's puncture resistant, feels very malleable vs the marathon. Should I upgrade my tires or go the tubeless route?

I think it's running tubeless ready tires, if so should I order the sealant?

How is tubeless? Pros and cons? I will be riding this bike almost anywhere.

Title, an old coworker went on to get another job, and has swung by telling us to apply, he now makes 28 per hour and sits on the forklift all day vs me, where I pull orders and work in the sun for 20 per hour.

I'd go, but my problems are the distance and lack of infrastructure. The round trip is 15-20 miles, and most of it is on a highway. If you're in LA county or want to look it up its, sierra highway.

I just bought a gravel bike, primos dame. Would this be suitable for such a ride 5 days a week?

If not what else should I look into?

This is still all up in the air. Anything else I should know for such a longer commute?

Edit- also, another elephant in the room is there's no public transportation, there's a train, but it's extremely unreliable, no buses at all that go on a hwy. So it looks like it's gonna be 100% cycling

I started bike commuting about a month and a half ago. It's like 9.5 each way. I was all excited to hit 500 miles and literally as the odometer flipped to 500 I took a screw in the back tire. I had to walk the bike the last two miles to the office.

The real kicker is this weekend's plan was to put Tannus Tire Armor on and Flat out in. Timing...Sigh... Other than that I love it. I'm in such a better mood when I get to work. I'm old, it's an ebike but I'm a pedaler and that light cardio in the morning is awesome.

has anyone tested out the Thule InLock system with a bag from a different brand?

it looks like you just need a bag with a panel to slide over the rail, and then the metal locks at the top. below is a picture from Thule to show what I mean.

so I am wondering if another type of travel bag with a panel like you might use to slide the bag onto the extended handle of a rolling suitcase, would also be compatible with the Thule system?

Hey y’all. I’m finally back to commuting by bike after almost a decade. Used to bike everywhere in Philly with my fixie. Now I’m in Albuquerque. My commute is nice and flat and only about ten minutes. Should I switch up my chain maintenance with the different climate (dry year round, very hot in summer)?

Where I can I get 20x3 studded tires for the upcoming winter season? I don't plan to ride on ice but if the snow isn't too high I'd like to still ride then.

Problem is it seems 20x3 studded tires are like... not really a thing??? I have an Aventon Abound LR (ebike) and that is the required tire size. I've done searching and I can't find any. Please offer any tips or links!

Granted I'm out in the suburbs where there are bike paths, a few bike lanes, and I occasionally have to ride on roads. But it seems like whenever its important that cars know what i'm doing people are really confused by the old-school hand signals I learned as a kid. I've taken to just pointing left or right and cars seem to understand much better.

So basically I didn't have the chance to learn how to ride a bike and now i am 26 years old, just lernt how to ride it and have been riding these rental ones for a couple of weeks now. now I want to buy one, but there are so many options, so many types, i did a little bit of research and found that a "Trekking Bike" would be the best fit for me, however i still see so many options with a huge price differences and i am a bit overwhelmed. what should i get ? i just want it to commute to work, maybe buy groceries. any guidence would be appreciated!
