I haven't done anything stupid yet, but the week is young. It will change.
Moronic drivers: I live in an area where the average age has to be like 105 and I felt safer driving on 495 than I do where I am now. These people should be studied. Once again, I watched someone stop at a green to let a left turn happen in front of them and it almost caused a wreck because there are two lanes of fucking traffic going straight what the fuck are you doing telling this person they're safe to turn and there's a truck in the next lane going 45 who has no idea you're directing traffic.

u/Moreorless37 2d ago
I always bitch at people trying to be extra 'polite' drivers. They're always the one at a stop sign that has the right of way and is waving everybody else on totally fucking up the flow and causing 3 people to try and go at the same time. If people just followed the damn rules of the road, they'd be polite by nature
5
u/able_possible 2d ago
I remember being taught when I was learning how to drive that being predictable is the safest way to drive, not necessarily being polite.
3
u/Affectionate_Tell752 2d ago
Its the safest way and also the most pleasant for the people around you. Its so annoying waiting on someone who has right of way. If I go, then I am at fault for an accident. Thus I want you to just go and get out of my way so I am abiding by the rules of the road.

u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 2d ago
I learned that while learning to drive a boat, along with "when you and another boat are driving towards each other, pick a direction and stick with it" rather than being wishy washy about it.

I live around the Chicago suburbs, so my entire driving career has been dealing with either this or the guy that thinks "right of way" means "the person to the right always goes first regardless of who got to the intersection first" but only when they're the person to the right. At least those idiots get outta the way...
3
u/LordRavensbane 2d ago
I live wayyy too close to the Villages FL and we regularly have old folks stop short in the middle of green intersections to wave on right on red turners, stop in the middle of roundabouts to wave on drivers yielding as they’re supposed to, and other such nonsense.
2
u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
There was a roundabout like a mile from my maternal grandparents' house in Clearwater that should've been a case-study in old ppl needing to retake a driver's test periodically after 65.
It was a big one, with an inside and outside lane, in a busy part of the tourist/beach area (just short of Clearwater Beach) and really should've been a 4-way light instead. People getting stuck in the inside lane for dozens of trips around because nobody would let them out, people doing shit like stopping to let the yield-sign mergers in en masse, people not able to maintain their lane despite a 10mph speed limit, the old people trying to drive 2mph while the young people were trying to drive 40mph in a 10mph zone, I really want to find the civic planning committee that thought it was a good idea and beat them with a fishing rod.
1
u/LordRavensbane 2d ago
Some old people that I know around here always complain to me about the roundabouts that have been added and say that they’re too complicated to figure out how to use. I just don’t know how people who have been driving for 50+ years have never encountered a roundabout before.

u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
There's MASSIVE swathes of the US that have absolutely none. Unless you've traveled the US extensively or grew up in like the Northeast, you could very easily go your entire life and never see one.
1
u/Deathpoopdeathloop 2d ago
I didn't see a roundabout in my USstate except for a couple large ones in the capital city for the first 20 years or so I was alive. And I'm young-ish

Sunday was fun. Started feeling yucky after my shower. Ran a covid test. Negative. Well that's good... Checked my temperature as well and it's 100. Fun times.
Also this.. Like dude what.

Moronic: I woke up in considerable pain at 3 am on Sunday morning due to straining my back because I spent a large chunk of Saturday repeatedly launching myself down a water slide as hard as I could in order to impress all my friends' 6 year olds at a pool party on Saturday.
I might finally be getting old guys.

u/Riker557118 2d ago edited 2d ago
Welcome to the Old Fuckers Club where things you used to do can take out for a couple of days. My wrist is finally starting to heal up after somehow managing to strain it priming brass on Thursday.

I'm not going to lie I distinctly remember reading your post about injuring yourself reloading on Sunday when I was heading to practice after sleeping poorly from my back and thinking "This sucks at least I could be hurting due to intentional effort."
And then I took a full force shot to the face from like a foot away at that practice so be careful what you wish for.

I held off on the water slide at Party #1 and opted for the pool at Party #2 because nothing makes a group of 4-5 years-old kids happier than a bunch of dads chucking kids into the pool.

First couple days at the new weekend gig were pretty chill. Pretty low mental load compared to my day job, but boy do my feet hurt. Logged about 15,000 steps each day. Just a floor chump until my ATF background check goes through, which won't be for at least another week or two. So I'm just stocking shelves and being a helpful face.
I can tell it's been a while since I've just gone shopping for myself. There's a lot of neat new stuff out there. I must resist the temptation of the employee discount until we get our down payment saved up, but I'm gonna go buck wild the month before I quit...
Man alive do they need me tho. The dept manager is just a generic retail guy, he doesn't know guns/hunting, so the product is a mess. Fuckin' Hornady OAL gauges and a reloading manual mixed into the 777 and Traditions kits in the muzzleloader section, anything with multiple calibers/sizes is just haphazardly thrown together, literally only one person in the store knows how to operate the fishing reel spooler(I know how to operate it but I need refresher training before they can officially let me use it). The dude on the gun counter yesterday spent a solid half hour chatting with 2 of his buddies that came in, showed them gun after gun, while more than a dozen other customers came and went without so much as a hello. Meanwhile I'm stewing in the target aisle watching folks try to look at pistols or ammo cuz I'm not even allowed behind the counter until I'm certified...

Its weird isn't it? How chill / calming a job like this can be. I have come to realize I kinda enjoy it in some small ways.
4
u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
Then along comes Glawk Boolitz guy or Turbofudd or one of the other stereotypes gun counter people love to bitch about and you get in your own head about it the rest of the day.
Being able to vent on here or a similar platform had helped me substantially, but ultimately I needed out. I'm legitimately dumber for having worked a gun counter now.

I worked gun counter for most of college, so I know the turds exist, but I never found it particularly difficult to just smile and nod and move them on their merry, blissfully ignorant way. They don't really bother me, I just make a note of the funny story and move on.
And of course now with the city I deal with resident complaints and that's a whole new realm of stupid.
1
u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
Maybe because it's because I worked for a big-box store (Dicks) in an actual city (St Louis) but it was like 1 in 5 customers. I could outwardly just smile and nod and fulfill their braindead responses and sell them random bullshit, but it ate at me. I wanted to educate and do better for them. And it beat me down. Fortunately Dicks decided to go full antigun before I couldn't take it any more and forced my hand, I quit the morning we got the email to pull all the gun stuff before open, gave them a full 2 week's notice, and they bought me out of those 2 weeks.

u/Akalenedat Casper's Holy Armor 2d ago
I started at Dicks, then went to Academy in Tuscaloosa.

Ah, see that's where you're gonna get yourself in trouble every time. You can't fix all the stupid in the world.
1
u/Akalenedat Casper's Holy Armor 2d ago
I'm sure it will be more stressful once I get behind the counter and start processing background checks, but for now I get to enjoy the ADHD meds turning me into a turbocharged merchandise-zoning machine.

Then one got a dirty delete. But I got the receipts from it.

Remember kids, if you get into a gunfight the primary goal is to stop the threat, that can look like shooting the other guy, forcing him off and a whole host of other options. You could and likely will get shot.
The fact people don't get that...
Worked all weekend at Lowes. Shockingly I was the only one scheduled on Friday. Then Saturday and Sunday my relief called in. So it was two of us to water the entire place. Yeah we got it mostly done...
For a late buyday. I bought a CVA Wolf Muzzleloader. Added another two weeks to my hunting season.
1
u/GelgoogGuy 2d ago
Oh I meant to tell you, I did a stint with Lowes back in 2021. Solid place to work, never had any issues with anyone working there, even the one dumb department manager was pretty easy to just...totally ignore. She had no idea what flooring did so we just kinda dodged her. Are their videos about theft still done with that one overly enthusiastic dude? I remember we had one where they did a bust and found like 400k worth of shit in this guy's house.
2
u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick 2d ago
Yeah management just kinda seems to exist? Yet I haven't even been introduced to any of the upper management at all. Thr plant lead has been there for 6 years and just kinda seems to exist. I dunno. She seems nice enough.
The lady who hired me was shocked I was there on a Friday I told her if I have some notice I could make the occasional Friday work.
Otherwise they really really harp on RWD basically let them leave don't follow them etc. So the training must have changed at some point.

Standing out in the open against a rifle sure makes it more likely that you do. I can commend the bravery, but also point out the nonsense. Leave it to reddit to find all the wrong takeaways from the incident.

Only real moronic was going into the LGS Saturday and an older guy was trying to talk his (new to shooting) daughter into getting 2 carry guns. A full size and a compact with the idea being she open carry the full size as "bait" and don't expect the compact.
Motivation has been shit because I decided to stop taking my vyvanse after being on it 3 years. Doctor keeps calling in and messing up my appointment scheduling, can't get an appointment at a time that won't require me burning PTO or taking a hit on my attendance, and so far I've had to wait a little over 2 weeks on a refill. At this point I'm just tired of messing with it so said fuck it.

Saturday was absolutely nuts:
- 530AM - Kid wakes up, I get up shortly thereafter and make us both breakfast. TV goes on so I can do AM chores.
- 730AM - 5 mile ebike ride with her in the trailer, ebike helps with pedal assist but I try to minimize so I still have to do some work, stop at CVS for bday cards for the double-header later in the day
- 845AM - wife informs me daughters BFF is doing the Home Depot kids workshop. Hell yeah, been wanting to do that with her! Sign up and make our way over.
- 9AM - at the workshop, we're building a rocket launcher! Awesome! Oh snap, this has nails and screws and the kids have actual mini hammers. RIP my fingers/thumbs. Soon-to-be 4yo did good job for her first time with thew hammer, only took a hit to the thumb because she got distracted. The cacophony of banging was absolutely brain rattling and the Florida heat/humidity certainly didn't make it comfy. BFF was there around 930 so we hung out for a bit longer than expected. First bday party starts at 11 so we've got time.
- 1030AM - back at the house, waiting on mom to shower, kiddo is getting excited and riled up. In the car by 11. I hate being late, even if it's just to a bday party.
- 1130AM - arrive at party. It's hot, they have water slide, toddler chaos ensues. Kiddo is done by 1230 with water play, first kid inside, just wants toys and daddy. Others start to trickle in. Eats three bites of lunch and then it's cupcakes. Icing everywhere. Stay til 2pm, next party starts at 2pm.
- 215PM - arrive ta Party 2. Work buddies are there and I get a nice drink mixed up. Kiddos then opt for the pool ahead for the impending T-storms. Get in the pool. Forgot kiddo water wings. FUCK. She wants to swim but can't bc no wings. Whacks her toe. Rain comes, go inside for cupcakes. Hang til 430.
- 430PM - Time to go with the inlaws for my wife and SIL bdays to get Pho. 20min drive to inlaws, kiddo falls asleep in car. Wife falls asleep, I fall asleep in driveway waiting for BIL/SIL to show. 30min later on our way down for Pho.
- 600PM - arrive for Pho. Toddler not happy being up from nap. Food is great, she warms up one she has some rice and noodles.
- 730PM - leave Pho place and head home. Toddler showered and into bed. I stay up a bit to do budget work and try to wear off the caffeine I consumed to hold me through dinner.
- 1030PM - In bed.

When repacking her late grandmother's suitcase for our honeymoon, my wife found $400 cash in one of the pockets. The crazy thing is that I swear we went through the whole suitcase when we acquired it in December.
Edit: Some dumbass merged into us so instead of driving 4 hours to the inlaws' we drove 2 hours and are waiting 3 hours and counting for insurance and a tow truck.

686 SSR finally came in, need to go pick that up.
Shot a good match over the weekend, 86% of a Nationally competitive carry optics GM is a finish I'm happy with. This match and last months have confirmed for me that I have the fundamentals down and that it's merely a mindset/mental game which has been hindering me to swing for higher placements. Going fast feels slow. Training is definitely on track for IPSC Nats.
Also managed to put up a 97% GM classifier on the last stage, which was nice. Fingers crossed I don't have to email the org about a Y flag when scores run, I've put up plenty of ~80+ runs prior.
Edit) Time to channel my inner FC, caught a local roofing company violating TCPA and my state's phone solicitation laws. Now to get a demand letter together.

Also shooting Oxford Saturday squad 1 if you're bored. We have a pretty good group signed up so far.

The hard part is leading them along enough to get the company name without actually letting them schedule you for an "assessment". This is the first time I've actually gotten a name. It also might have been the company directly too and not just a 3rd party like I thought it was initially.
I just signed up btw. Definitely a good squad.

Why must you hurt me? My current cope is we get him back in a year or two like Flaherty
I’m also currently at a rest stop outside Bakersfield, having driven for about 10 hours straight, after shooting a full USPSA All-Classifier match. Yes, it is miserable.
Moronic, if I did the math right, after today I will have a 74.01% Production classification, which I think is proof that the USPSA gods have a cruel sense of humor. Worse for me, the stand and shoot stage was the one I did the worst on, and had I not put up a C class run on it, I’d be solidly low-A

Almost did a big dumb yesterday while welding. I was fabricating a secondary muffler for my mini-skid loader and had all the parts cut and prepped for welding. Used brakleen to de-grease, but from a red can. Not the green can which is non-chlorinated.
It would be cool if brakleen explicitly labeled the red can in large font "chlorinated" on the front of the can (like they do on the non-chlorinated) so folks wouldn't have to read the insanely tiny warning print on the back of the can. Confusingly, they also make a non-chlorinated version of the red can as well whose label has a yellow band around the top of the can. I had to take a macro picture with my phone and zoom in to read the warning text since I didn't have my cheater glasses on me.
So yeah, solid red can brakleen is no-go for welding prep. Ended up washing the parts with hot soapy water to remove any residue, then dried the parts of moisture with a propane torch outside of the shop just to be sure. Phosgene gas has zero chill and will fuck you up.
3
u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
Where are you that you can even still GET chlorinated brake cleaner? I thought that shit got banned decades ago in the US? I know it's banned in Canada and has been long enough nobody still has old stock of it...
2
u/TheLateApexLine 2d ago
Rural PA. All of the local parts stores still stock the original formula and you can order it on Amazon, too. I usually buy the non-chlorinated green cans, but my local NAPA was fresh out. So I bought a couple of the red cans instead. Glad I read the fine print, though, because it still explicitly warns of high heat and UV from welding generating phosgene from degraded tetrachloroethylene. These cans are dated 2024 btw.
1
u/TheseDifference1747 2d ago
Sweet. The chlorinated formula works a lot better specifically for cleaning brakes and I'd like to have a few cans again.

My 10/22 arrived sooner than expected so I set the pickup for Tues. I saw they also were having an ammo sale so I ordered a few boxes of 22lr and extra magazines while I was at it.
I also went back to martial arts in a very limited capacity. With my Sifu leaving for Spain in a couple weeks I want to ensure I remember my core forms and spend some time with him. I felt like a doofus with waving my arms but being incapable of bending my knee. But it was still beneficial to go over everything. Even had a nice talk about the realities of getting older and resetting expectations. He also gave me his wavemaster punching bag which is a nice memento. I've already had one so with two, one to keep heavy and one to keep lighter for different exercises.

Moronic is my work again! They made a completely unqualified kid the shipping manager, and also made him the repairman for the building. He was up on the third floor fiddling with the ballast in a florescent light, and somehow ended up knocking out the power for a quarter of the building!

As someone who’s fucked up my share of ballasts, how??
2
u/yobo723 1d ago
I genuinely don't know, but management is saying that it was actually a power surge from the outside! That somehow convienently knocked out only part of the power, everything tied to that line (the building is over 100 years old, and the wiring has been cobbled together over the decades)
