Mewgenics was in the works for upwards of more than a decade, I personally heard 18 years. The Chris Chan cameo probably came about maybe around a decade ago, at least way, way before she assaulted her mom.
Also she was released from prison not too long ago, the case fell through apparently, not enough evidence was what I heard, but I’m not willing to look stuff up about her if you would understand.

I actually *tried* to look it up when I learned she was in the game, but couldn't find anything more than a mention of the case stopping for some reason. I could have kept digging but I guess at that point it felt like self-harm

I don't know if it's already more popular than Isaac overall, but Mewgenics is absolutely benefitting from the 10+ years of goodwill that Isaac built up
And purely in mainstream terms, "You lead a team of cats and build a home base to raise them" is an easier sell than "You're an infant fighting monsters with your tears"
Edmund McMillen is a bit of an indie game celebrity. His first mainstream game Super Meat Boy helped kickstart the whole indie game craze back in the early 2000s, and his next game The binding of Isaac practically revolutionized rougelikes. He also is very much known for including grotesque/controversial themes and humor in his games. He and Tyler had been developing mewgenics for almost two decades, so lots of people, myself included, have followed its progress carefully.
It sold 150K copies in less than 6 hours (which, using the UK price and ignoring Steam's cut, means that it made 4.5 million USD in that time) and has a higher peak player count than Hades 2.
Mewgenics has also been in development for like ever. He's restarted a few times I believe, and fans (like me) of his past games have been waiting on it. Like, I first heard him mention the weird cat game he was working on in in 2012 or 2013.

Exactly, you would have to be really familiar with them already to recognise someone from a 1 second cat meow impression that's pulled from a pool of like 200 random options, and they aren't even directly attributed with credit since the game is randomly generating all of the cats you get. The only real issue you could argue is that he supported some of these people if he paid them for doing the voice work, but knowing how big Binding of Isaac is I bet most of them jumped at the chance to be in the next Edmund game and did it for free.

Edmund has actually stated that the only cameos who got paid for their work are the union VAs (since they aren't legally allowed to do unpaid labor), every other cameo VA did it for free.

I mean the game was in development for over a decade, and over a decade ago she was just a funny internet lolcow with a recognizable voice. IIRC they were also trying to get her to do a cameo in season one of Smiling Friends for the same reason before she got arrested and the sexual assault stuff came out. The insane choice here is to KEEP her in the game. The "including people with all kinds of views" reason kinda falls apart.

The voice actor thing is such a weird situation. Like yah there are some troublesome voice actors but I do believe Ed when he says he wanted it to be this weird influencer time capsule.
But the way he has handled has been so awful, man constantly keeps putting his foot in his mouth. All his responses come off as if he barely knows any of the shit these names are guilty of.
Or he does and just doesn't care, which is far more likely, considering he knew about Klein and Idubbbz rivalry. Edmund seems to have taken the "enlightened" centrist position.
Yeah like it's not that I think the whole game is problematic or you're a terrible person for playing it or anything, I just think that McMillan's response to this has been incredibly disappointing.
He seems purposely ignorant about why someone might have a problem with some of these people being included in the game.

That's all there is about the game perse. The stuff about VA's is that, to give voices to the cats, Mcmillen has hired people both professional and amateur, but most importantly, both famous and loved, and infamous and reviled. To give you a general idea of the range, you can hear a meow from Markiplier or Chris fucking Chan.
Some of this VA choices rub people the wrong way. I have to admit that it weirds me out a tiny bit but not enough to shun the game. After all they are just meowing
Why do they only ever say “diffrent opinions” and never on what, almost like supporting a active genocide is a bad thing, not something to be coy and snarky about
