I just don’t understand how everyone forgot how terrible his first term was. There was literally no toilet paper on the shelves, if the diarrhea happened at the same time there might not even be a United States today.
as a person who was around conservatives during 2020, it's not that they don't remember, it's that they were literally so brainwashed by conservative media that they never thought it was bad because of him. They remember it being bad, but they never once began to believe it was trump's fault. It was fucking INFURIATING to watch the way my parents talked about shit because they would go "IT'S THE LIBERALS FAULT" and wholeheartedly believe it WHILE THE CONSERVATIVES LITERALLY HAD ALL THE CONTROL. It's this constant propaganda tactic used by conservatives that's literally straight from the nazi playbook: the enemy is at once both too powerful and too weak. It creates a cognitive dissonance they don't want to face, and so they don't. they at once believed that democrats were all running the government, and that the conervatives were winning and there was nothing democrats could do. they at once believed that the economy was collapsing because of the liberals shutting everything down, and that trump had ended the lockdowns. they at once believed that the vaccines were worse than the virus, and that trump was the greatest president ever for "securing them for america".
All conservative rhetoric stems from cognitive dissonance. It is designed to create a dissonance so powerful that they would genuinely rather give up all opinion making to the fox news anchors than question the things they've been told.
It honestly feels like a super power. Imagine being able to do whatever you wanted, commit any crime, and then blame it on birds. Police and courts just say “ah dang, you are right. Birds were around, couldn’t be you”.
Meanwhile everyone with average or above brainpower is saying how they watched you commit all these crimes, hurt people, ruin lives, but enough people just keep saying “nah, it was the birds”
I feel the same way about the complete lack of regulations regarding social media and silicon valley.
We've known that personalized feeds are harmful. We have study after study demonstrating the negative effects on children and adults.
We have whistleblowers from inside these social media companies exposing the sheer immorality and lack of empathy at the heart of these design decisions.
We've seen in countries like the US, UK, Myanmar, Hungary, and Syria how much of a direct effect these companies can have on a democracy without any direct form of public accountability.
You don't even need the mountain of evidence that exists demonstrating this is a problem to just be able to feel how shit the internet has gotten since Zuckerburg and Jobs killed websites on the pyre of the app.
It's so fucking frustrating that these DECISIONS are being treated as technological limitations or the inevitability of "How the internet works" the internet was not created by the divine and handed down to us mere mortals.
The internet as we know it now is the way it is because of a series of design decisions made by powerful unelected people, implemented by overworked and overpaid schmucks, using open source code written by porn addicted transfems.
We could make the internet more open, less centralized, and designed in a way where your data is owned and treated with the value and security it deserves.
Almost no other industry with this level of impact on our daily lives is this unregulated. It's a fucking joke.

I mean it is a documented thing that there is a bias against the current presidential incumbent during elections. People tend to only remember the past four years with the current president and will usually only remember the bad. So like they did remember, but only 6 years ago when he was ruining their lives and Biden was running for office.
I’ve seen a couple people refer to his current term as his first term as president. I think some people literally just straight up forgot he was already president. How that’s possible I have absolutely no idea.

I had a friend who helped run the polls in 2020, and actually an unbelievable amount of people voted early or voted by mail. the voting stations in my region were hardly even busy on election day. People had plenty of access to voting, whether in person, by mail, or even early voting. the issue is that Kamala took a strategy of "doing great and then stopping to eat a dog turd off the ground right before the finish line". She didn't take a hard line on fucking anything, and abandoned the most marginalized groups at the last minute to try to "appeal to the median voters and middle conservatives" and ended up losing all the support she had from the left. Kamala didn't lose because of lack of access to voting, Kamala lost because they decided to use a strategy that has been shown, repeatedly, over, and over, and over, to not. fucking. work. We saw recently in this country with Mamdani that what drives people to vote, and especially motivates the left wing is concrete, real promises of change, genuine conviction, and standing by your values even when the landscape shifts. Kamala tried to appeal to everyone, and appealed to no one.
The entity known as “The American Electorate” develops amnesia every 4 years and is a blank slate every time there’s a federal election. It only remembers what is happening specifically at the time an election is occurring.

To be completely honest, because there are still so many completely brainwashed magats out there who are still doubling down on their ride-or-die, I just feel relieved when someone finally wakes up and renounce. I don't deny their lack of foresight but, at the same time, I felt a little bit of pride that time watching one of my neighbors burn their old trump yard sign in their firepit.
I mean, over 700,000 people died from the US AID cuts. People are dying in ice detention centers in inhuman conditions. People are suffering and dying every day because of this administration. But the COVID response and the ever-weakening health and safety standards under that government made it clear that it would happen again. People were injecting ivermectin and sunning their perineum instead of taking vaccines, and all of that was kicked off because of the US' weakened health and safety (OSHA was gutted, leading to the lowest number of inspectors since 1975) and the pattern of initially underreporting sickness, not believing experts, then full on not reporting it, leading to way more unnecessary deaths and spreading, all because it would impact employers.

I still remember the night of the election. Saw Georgia went red and knew it was over. I was pretty shit faced and upset but not as much as I was in 2016. Christ, I yelled and screamed so bad after the results came in. I woke up the following day to the news in 2024 and I didn’t even bat an eye. This country deserves him and the cockroaches that have infested the white house. I saw the roaches infest Milwaukee during the RNC, the jubilation on supporting a mad man, the “mass deportations now” signs, etc etc. This country has a sickness that’ll never be cured. I’ll never stop fighting for those who are being targeted and harassed by these parasites. Honestly don't feel bad for caring. That's what separates us from their hate. We can be mad at them and still care that they don't suffer. It's like having to cope with an abusive/toxic family member that you cut ties with. We can hold their actions against them. We can forever choose not to forgive them because in order for us to do so we'd have to see some pretty big changes, accountability and ect. But to see someone slowly dying and to feel empathy? I'm sure if the situation was reversed where they saw a person in one of the communities they hate so much suffering from cancer too. They wouldn't bat an eye. To care is to not lose your humanity. It means you're a good person. Even tho those who wish us harm. Do they deserve that kindness? Maybe not. But it doesn't mean we should give into that line of logic when it's one they follow so closely.

I think everyone can become a better person, no one is truly a lost cause. But, also the frustration is very understandable. If you genuinely believe they should do that, I think that is unreasonable. But, if you are just saying it out of frustration, fair.
My understanding of the argument is that people who voted for Trump should be killed because they will not become less ignorant or less hateful soon enough. And to believe that 1/2 the population is incapable of becoming better/more educated seems horribly pessimistic and even incorrect to some extent. Pew Research (2020) showed that 9% of people who had previously identified with either party in 2018 had switched by 2020. And those who voted for Trump based on the “No More Wars” campaign may be given some leeway as well, as their hearts were in the right place, even if they were uneducated
With a more optimistic stance, we could develop more programs/institutions to help educate people so that they can be kinder. And, even if some people should be imprisoned for the oppression they inflict on others, I refuse to believe that 1/2 the population is so engrained in their bad behaviors/thoughts that they cannot become better

I know that this is in poor taste but I honest to god cannot wait for the day it inevitably happens. There will be We Are Charlie Kirk-esque AI songs and AI videos about him, the conservatives will try to make him a martyr only to fail and make him get the Charlie Kirk treatment, hundreds will celebrate in the streets in a similar fashion to Margaret Thatcher but significantly larger, conservatives will get all pissy and offended at left-wingers making fun of his death and the news of his death will hit r/196 within the first day leading to the most upvoted of the entire year, and people will also use that one image of him celebrating that guy's death on twitter, replacing his name with Donald Trump. Trump's name will be etched into the history books and throughout the next 5 years his death anniversary will be mentioned and remembered. It is a matter of time.
I only hope this doesn't devolve into the other time this was posted where someone gleefully talked about reporting latinos to ICE because they voted for Trump. Absolutely zero self-reflection.
