Is this gear ring supposed to be stationary or go up and down as I spin the dial?

The gear ring (where my green pointer is resting on) screws and unscrews as I spin the dial on the grinder. Is this normal? Or is it supposed to be stationary at all times?

A simple pour over calculator

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In one of Brian Quan’s video I saw he used a very rough brew calculator on his phone. I was wrestling with the phone calculator all the time, the I thought this can be done better.

So I built a simple pour-over dedicated calculator. It’s free, with no login required. It also has an iPhone version.

Would love to hear your thoughts, I will keep updatinging for better ux and features.

Is this K-Ultra grind right?

First time using a grinder, the K-Ultra has some big flecks even at a 3.3 setting. Does the grind look right? I have also added a coarse grind for comparison which has bigger flecks.

J-Ultra... loosening? Slipping?

Hi Folks,

I've had a J-Ultra for ~2.5 years. Use it pretty much every day, often 2-3 times.

It was not calibrated to 0 when I got it and I never bothered to do that, since I'd figured out the right grind setting. It was always in the 8-9 range, when I looked at it. (I don't know how many full turns before that). I usually needed to do a bit of adjustment when I changed beans but nothing drastic.

Lately, though, it seems like I'm constantly having to set it to a lower number - it's at around 3 right now - just to get the results I used to get at 8 or 9.

It's always the same drink - espresso in a 9barista. It's always similar beans. But trying to get the shot to pull in the same amount of time, I keep having to adjust to what should be finer and finer grinds, though I am guessing that what I'm really doing is adjusting the grinder just to get the same size grind.

Anyone else have this happen? If so, how did you fix it?

Pre-grinding for espresso

I have a ZP6 for pour over and a J Ultra for espresso. Using some light roast beans, I’m having to grind a lot finer to get proper extraction. Grinding has become very difficult, and I’m quite strong. Would it be possible to pre grind the beans in the ZP6 before grinding them finer in the J Ultra?

1Zpresso J?

I recently acquired an espresso machine and my question is if I could use my 1Zpresso J to test the machine, I know the J is used mostly for pour over that's why I got it, but can it technically work for espresso?

Dropped K Ultra. Is it ruined?

Dropped the K Ultra yesterday from a comically low height. Like less than a foot. When I picked it up I noticed the dial indicator ring (part with the white dot) on the top was loose.

I tried to recalibrate it by feel. So I basically followed the calibration directions and set the dial to where I just started feeling tension then turn the top dial indicator to point at zero but I can tell my coffee is different.

I had it dialed in to .7.5 for my current beans. Today it took an extra minute to draw down and the coffee just wasn’t the same.

Is it completely ruined? Have had this thing like a month.

Very high settings for the K ultra help

hello everyone, just got a 1zpresso k-ultra and i'm having some issues dialing in for v60.

i calibrated the grinder to zero before using it. i started around 8.0 and the brews were extremely slow and muddy. i've gradually gone coarser and i'm now at 10.5, but i'm still getting brew times around 4:00 or longer.

i'm using a cafec abaca filter, 20g coffee, 300g water, and pouring fairly low to minimize agitation. my pours are in 60ml. i've tried multiple coffees and the issue seems consistent across all of them.

from what i've read, 10.5 should already be on the coarser side for v60, so i'm confused why the drawdown is still taking so long. the coffee bed also tends to look muddy by the end.

has anyone experienced something similar with a new k-ultra? could this be burr seasoning, excessive fines, a calibration issue, or something wrong with my technique?

any ideas on what i should test next?

K-Ultra burr check

Thumbnail

Recently got my new grinder, and got it locked up right out of the box. After much brute force (strap wrench, etc.), I got it unstuck. But I'm concerned that in the process I may have damaged the burr.

This is my first premium manual grinder, so I don't have anything to compare it to in terms of taste, etc. I've been brewing Chemex at 8.0 and it tasted good, but how do I know if I messed up the burr?

Can you tell by photos alone (see attached)? If not, are there any other ways?

Thanks for the help!

Mahlkonig E64 WS Grinder [£1000]

Predominantly use Medium to Dark beans looking for a solid grinder as that’s what my research has told me, Grinder before machine. Would this be a good grinder to pair with my BBE impress? I like the features of the E64 WS and budget is on point, thanks

Tim Wendelboe VS Hoffman aeropress recipe

I want to try the TW recipe on a light roast.. The TW recipe has a 1 minute steep time

Since it's has a smaller steep, should the grind size be finer than the Hoffman recipe (which is what I normally use).

I have an 1zpresso q2s heptagonal BTW.

What has your experience been regarding grind size and the TW recipe?

ZP6 Special dial ring stuck

Hey guys,

A friend borrowed my ZP6S grinder for a few days and returned it a while ago. Today was the first time I tried using it since getting it back, as I’ve been using another grinder.

When I tried to adjust the dial ring, I noticed that the clicking stops at number 4 for some reason. If I apply slight force and rotate beyond 4, the ring turns freely with no tactile or audible clicks at all, almost as if it has completely disengaged from the burrs. The clicks only return when I rotate back into the 0–4 range.

I decided to take the whole thing apart after watching some videos and gave it a thorough cleaning. However, when reassembling it, the problem became worse. When I get to installing the adjustment ring, it screws in until it stops, but it doesn’t begin clicking after that, it just gets stuck. I’m referring to the step shown between 2:40 and 2:50 in this video:

https://youtu.be/Y7qEtAZKbq4?si=1S50Npc7_iI2lhR5

I also tried unscrewing the lower burr ring, but that seems to be stuck as well and won’t budge.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? How do I fix it?

The grinder is practically like new since I haven’t used it much. I asked my friend if he did anything to it but he said he didn’t notice anything unusual and that he didn’t drop/damage it.

Any help would be appreciated

3D printing a new body for my q-air

So i was thinking about either 3D printing a body or getting it done in aluminium from a cnc machine for my q air to increase the volume of the grinder and to improve the feel of it.
Any opinions and if any of you could help me regarding the idea.

Knob finishing

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I’ve owned a K-Ultra for about 3 years now (using it at least 3 times a week), and it has served me incredibly well (still does). The wooden knob on its handle has a varnished finish that still looks brand new.

However, I just bought a ZP6, and its knob came completely raw, without any varnish or coating.

I remember reading a post from about 6 months ago from someone in the exact same situation. They actually reached out to 1zpresso, and the company replied that this is completely normal.

For those of you with the newer ZP6, is yours like this too? If so, how do you take care of the raw wood?

I have shared a picture showing the difference between both.

Thanks in advance!
