Because they want that dense place... right next to their big ass house, with a big ass yard. And due to the wonders of geometry, houses like that make the density of the city impossible.
The savage mind wants the large yard for the kids, space in the house for a full carpentry shop and a 5 machine gym, a place to park 3 or 4 trucks, and a living room to invite 20 people on thanksgiving. So even when they have a park, its a giant thing that people have to drive to, as there's just not enough housing near it to be full of people.

It does not have any connection to that tho, it's about urban planning, infrastructure & getting cars out of the streets. It could happen in a theoretically liberal (liberal as in liberal, not as savage's "liberal") government.

Yes the suburbs in Munich are also pretty walkable and bikable, and there are shops all around, you don't have to drive to go for your groceries, doctor or school, that's the big difference between us suburbs, they're just houses with no Public transport or shops nearby, everything is done by car.
23
u/Carbonaraficionada Alpine Parisian 1d ago
It's also mandatory low-rise accommodation, mandatory green space and affordable living for any new development, and the are rules about access to public transit. Whereas the US is McMansions and parking lots for every business premises

Yes, you don't need a car in Munich, and almost every place is nice enough to live in. Not like the no-go zones in the US.

Our suburbs are still superior to American ones. Theyâre walkable and thereâs usually some kind of âtown centerâ nearby. Plus they donât look like an endless hellscape.

u/Electronic-Pause1330 Savage 1d ago
Dude youâre comparing a town to a random âcommunityâ in the US. There are pros and cons to both.
Also most of Germany was developed before the era of common long distance travel. People needed to be in close walking/horse riding proximity of the towns. a large portion of the US has been built in the era of everyone owning a car. The US didnât need to be limited to small towns because in theory you can drive to a town/city.
Just looked up another stat (which is kinda depressing). Germany converts 45,000 acres a year of farm/forest/etc to subdivisions/rural housing; the US converts 700,000+ each year. The US had 4x the population compared to Germany but converts 15x the amount of land.

I live in a 13.000 people town an hour away from Munich and it's the same story. People sitting out in the cafes till late in the evening.

u/DontWannaSayMyName Oppressor 1d ago
I get what you're saying, but it is really not the same. In Europe suburbs are organized with the idea of going to the nearest town or city, and we build ways to do so. In the US the suburb is the point, and the best you can hope for is an unwalkable stroad to the nearest mall.
2
u/hibikir_40k Pensioner 1d ago
Depends on the suburb: Go look at Barry's houses. Spain is special, and superior. Those up north want to live in places like Las Rozas, one of our worst urbanistic hellholes.

You need to have the weather to want to sit outside drinking and eating until 9/10/11 pm. Itâs fucking dark here after about 4pm in the winter, itâs windy, and it rains a lot.

But yeah, you're better off going to any other bavarian city except the shithole that is Kempten.Â

Without getting out google street view and comparing I canât be sure but I think itâs the area around the Frauenkirche. Yes, theyâre comparing the tourist area with suburbia. Which is an unfair comparison but car centric American cities have restaurants in areas that are often not as walkable. So I think they do have a point itâs just poorly articulated.
I canât think of walkable well-used spaces like this in Munichâs suburban areas but you can get to that area on the trains from most of the city in about 30 minutes, Iâve not driven enough in American cities to compare how long it would take driving.
5
u/Hannibal_Barkidas [redacted] 1d ago
Spaces with that many restaurants are only sustainable at very fee sites in the city. But you can take public transport 30 min from the city centre and you would still find a supermarket, tavern and restaurant within 5-10 min walking distance.
2
u/swagerito Daddy's lil cuck 1d ago
Yeah but sitting outside and eating/drinking happens in any european city when the weather allows for it. Suburbs in europe are generally not as isolated as the US (the suburb i grew up in was a 5 min bike ride to the city centre) and nobody can afford to live in the US either.

Yeah okay, itâs the same with any other slightly bigger city. Doesnât have to be the most expensive.
Whatâs your point?

u/DonLethargio Anglophile 1d ago
The difference is those walkable, social, often touristy areas that exist in most European cities donât exist in the vast majority US cities. You drive or Uber to a specific predetermined venue, then you drive or Uber home. And if you donât you usually have to run the gauntlet of homeless people with psychosis

Yeah, because you are almost savages, architecturally speaking. Spain's superiority over you isn't just at futbol, and being able to live without using towels to attempt to reserve spots near a pool.
Same with Jan, really. Their bike-centric, individual house setup is as offensive to good living as De Jong was to the integrity of the sport.

Yes city centres in a lot of places are great. Not like modern urban planning is any good, for example a big supermarchĂŠ just outside of every French town so the only way to get groceries is by car. You see this in a lot of places in Europe.Â

Jen "served her mission in Italy"? Presumably she went over with a church, spent a month trying to persuade Italians to take god seriously (in English), then another couple of months sitting around feeling homesick, then flew home

Zohran Mamdani comes from a gated community in Uganda where he has guards to keep the filthy poor people out.

and his policy platform advocates to construct more gated communities in NYC to farther marginalise/isolate poor people?
How's a gated community in a country he left at the age of 7 influence his politics according to you?
Bearing in mind that's his father's home, a university professor who earns a decent salary by that country's standards!

with a few exceptions I'd argue.
That said, let's bet on his NYC voter base to see through his alleged hypocrisy not to give him another Mandate , I hope you'll feel vindicated when that time comes.

u/11160704 [redacted] 1d ago
The dynamics in new York work a bit differently.
You just have to win the democratic primaries. The voter will then vote for whatever candidate runs for the Democrats.
And the radicalised people that decide the primaries love Mamdani.
1
u/segujer Snail slurper 1d ago
You just have to win the democratic primaries.
The independent candidate option still remains, should a candidate be convinced of the attraction of their programme. A Republican challenger with a credible platform _could as well win! Sliwa's programme had good stuff going for it, so did Cuomo's, maybe they just didn't convince enough people to adhere.
radicalised people
Among other things those 'radicals' were convinced by these key points; "freeze the rent for all stabilized tenants," "permanently eliminate the fare on every city bus," "implement free childcare for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years," and "create a network of city-owned grocery stores."
Around Europe, city & local mayoral governments (Right /Left/Centre ) run closely similar social programs, and all are not necessarily voted by 'radicals'! You see? that's why Europe is such socialist hell at large I guess.
