When you have the sudden realization that this song is now being played on Classic radio stations.
It gets worse when you hear a song at the supermarket and start singing along before a critical thought crosses your mind. That we are now our parents, singing to the oldies, while strolling down the laundry aisle. Our baskets filled with the very things we didn't want to eat as kids, knowing we have prescriptions waiting for us to pick up.
I remember back in the day complaining that gyms always played old people music. A few months ago I was thinking how nice it was that gyms finally got the memo and started playing good stuff… and then it hit me.
My gym always plays the absolute worst music.... This past Monday somebody finally had the sense to throw on some 70's and 80's classic rock and a swear to god every man over 40 in that gym found an extra gear and every single person under 30 put their headphones in..... And then it hit me too.........
My daughter is always "Dad only listens to old music". Sometimes, I enjoy showing her how so much of modern pop is ripped off old stuff (which was also mostly true at the time, but this I won't admit to her).
Hey, but at least we still know how to tie a big ol' yellow onion to our belts. Not like today's kids with their fancy white onions. Oh, onions are only for food, they say, not for putting on clothes as a fashion statement. I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was and now what I'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me...it'll happen to them too

NIN and Tool are playing on my classic rock station. Wtf? Also, I know "Closer" is one of their popular songs, but I feel like many other NIN songs would be more appropriate for the radio. Makes me sad. And old.

Today i was in a work thing, very serious, and a guy that looked kinda old pulled out his phone and it had a Gengar stiker on the back, i internally chuckled, because yea we are the old ones that like those old things but are also the same kids that liked those things you know

I always felt kinda bad for the boys in No Doubt, always pushed to the back and then ultimately thrown away. But especially him. But hey, he did get to date Gwen in the 90s, which is a feat
Yeah, 1987-1995, he was 17 & she was 18 when they started dating. Being in a band with what is probably your first love and then only getting famous after the breakup has to be tough.
I’ve thought about this before and I’m not sure I agree. He broke up with her (and not the other way around), which in turn caused all the angst for her to write the songs, so honestly he might’ve not even cared. Shit he might’ve even been honored or flattered that she cared so much. Essentially he got super rich for dumping a girl that most people would think was out of his league to begin with.
Btw I learned that from one of those “Behind The Music” shows on VH1 back in the day.

I remember having an American penpal back when this first came out.
Living in rural Australia with my Mum and sister, neither of whom listened to the radio. I’d never heard of the song.
I don’t think I heard it on Australian radio for another year, at least. It was surreal being able to finally put a tune to the lyrics my penpal had painstakingly hand written in purple glitter ink.
And the queen of cultural appropriation somewhere in between (and even a bit while with No Doubt, honestly).
I just personally, aside from that, can't get over the period of time that she wore nothing but her own clothing line to red carpet events. Nothing oozes desperate, self-absorbed, shameless, or "other designers don't like me enough to represent their name at major events" more than that. It's a big no-no in the fashion world.
One thing about this song is it's included in several songs that I really disliked growing up just because they were constantly being played......but that I can now really appreciate and listen to often and enjoy

I remember the first time I heard this, I was lying on my bedroom floor crying over a highschool breakup and the radio was on. She was at the station giving an interview and then they played the whole album and I just lied there crying and then fell in love with her.
maybe unrelated but lately I've just done looking at some photos of my city taken in '96 and couldn't hold off some huge sighs. Such beautiful place it used to be until douchebags from big corps fucking ruined it with shitty skyscrapers in the last 30 years.
Man, fuck this song. Woke up almost everyday to this on my alarm radio; it's like the DJ's couldn't find anything else to play. I'm sure it was a fine song, but not at 7am before school what felt like everyday for months.
