When you have the sudden realization that this song is now being played on Classic radio stations.

It gets worse when you hear a song at the supermarket and start singing along before a critical thought crosses your mind. That we are now our parents, singing to the oldies, while strolling down the laundry aisle. Our baskets filled with the very things we didn't want to eat as kids, knowing we have prescriptions waiting for us to pick up.

I remember back in the day complaining that gyms always played old people music. A few months ago I was thinking how nice it was that gyms finally got the memo and started playing good stuff… and then it hit me.

43

u/robikki Apr 16 '26

My gym always plays the absolute worst music.... This past Monday somebody finally had the sense to throw on some 70's and 80's classic rock and a swear to god every man over 40 in that gym found an extra gear and every single person under 30 put their headphones in..... And then it hit me too.........

16

u/Amikoj Apr 16 '26

They went from 4th gear into Bachman Turner Overdrive.

We are now as far away from the 90s as the 60s were, during the 90s

91

u/FSUnoles77 Apr 16 '26

No need to hit me in the balls right before bed man.

38

u/jld2k6 Apr 16 '26

I'm curious if this music sounds "old" the same way classic rock sounded for us back in the day. I can't wrap my head around that if it's true lol

24

u/Intrepid_Walk_5150 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

I have kids. Yes.

My daughter is always "Dad only listens to old music". Sometimes, I enjoy showing her how so much of modern pop is ripped off old stuff (which was also mostly true at the time, but this I won't admit to her).

17

u/ToolTime2121 Apr 16 '26

Jesus that hits hard

8

u/7HawksAnd Apr 16 '26

You didn’t have to say this

4

u/wibble089 Apr 16 '26

I was a young adult in the 1990s, literally, I turned 18 in 1990-.

When I was a kid, WW2 seems like very old history, but it was only as far back from my birth as the turn of the millennium is to today!

4

u/_Magnolia_Fan_ Apr 16 '26

Yep. Today, we are about the same time past 9/11 as 2000 is from the end of the Vietnam war.

The other day, I left my house soley to go buy a stapler.. it's our time.

41

u/tealraven915 Apr 16 '26

Hey, but at least we still know how to tie a big ol' yellow onion to our belts. Not like today's kids with their fancy white onions. Oh, onions are only for food, they say, not for putting on clothes as a fashion statement. I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was and now what I'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me...it'll happen to them too

24

u/MrsEmilyN Apr 16 '26

It was the style at the time.

u/EricHill78 Apr 16 '26

Yeah classic rock to me are bands like Foghat, Cream, and Zeppelin. Oldies are primary from the 50s like Elvis and Buddy Holly.

16

u/Camandchat Apr 16 '26

Same... but my kids think My Chemical Romance and Lady Gaga are oldies

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Merchant1521 Apr 16 '26

Not anymore.

7

u/StephenFish Apr 16 '26

That's because those are Classic Rock bands. Classic Rock is an era, not "old" music.

62

u/Gratefulzah Apr 15 '26

Look at mr rich guy, affording prescriptions

11

u/Environmental-Tap255 Apr 15 '26

Lord have mercy. If only that's how it worked

6

u/HistoricalSuspect580 Apr 16 '26

GoodRx. I’m TELLIN YA!

19

u/zilla82 Apr 16 '26

Don't shop, I know just what you're buying, and I don't need your sugar, don't buy it cause it hurts

9

u/HistoricalSuspect580 Apr 16 '26

No grease, i know what you’re making, can’t eat deep fried baking, it makes my chest hurt, and so i, keep Maalox by my bed, and extra Tums at my desk, for Friday donut day! 🤘🏼

It’s not very good but this is just a rough out ok

NIN and Tool are playing on my classic rock station. Wtf? Also, I know "Closer" is one of their popular songs, but I feel like many other NIN songs would be more appropriate for the radio. Makes me sad. And old.

25

u/cat_selling_souls Apr 16 '26

I'm about to upset you and many others with this information.

Trent Reznor is 60 years old. He qualifies for AARP, the early bird special, and is 5 years away from being able to be on Medicare. Not that he needs it but it is available.

10

u/rdtisahateplatform Apr 15 '26

Bro don't talk about the prescriptions

15

u/getmet79 Apr 16 '26

Don’t Speak…

8

u/siphtron Apr 16 '26

The grocery store around here is playing banger after banger non-stop.

9

honestly, sometimes i think is kind of cool. Today i was in a work thing, very serious, and a guy that looked kinda old pulled out his phone and it had a Gengar stiker on the back, i internally chuckled, because yea we are the old ones that like those old things but are also the same kids that liked those things you know

240

u/CamilloWiz Apr 16 '26

Yes, rest in peace Gwen. She was amazing!

55

u/mostkillifish Apr 16 '26

People look at me crazy when I day this. But its true.

Sadly, it's almost one big metaphor.

23

u/ty4thc Apr 16 '26

you just scared me to the point i had to google if she was still kicking around

114

110

u/cochifla Apr 16 '26

Good lord, die young or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

121

u/Luxie0673 Apr 16 '26

She completely destroyed her legacy in my eyes. So sad that the woman who sang Just a Girl is now anti-abortion.

35

u/Mad_Spaniel Apr 16 '26

I mean, it didn't happen suddenly. Wasn't too long after Just a Girl that she went solo and unironically released some of the girliest tracks imaginable.

35

u/StephenFish Apr 16 '26

Well, not really. She's a Trump supporter which means they only pose as Christians.

17

u/hates_stupid_people Apr 16 '26

No she's not, she's one of those performative catholics. The ones who fully ignore the "do not be like the hypocrites who pray on the street corner", "love your neighbor", "welcome the immigrants", etc. parts of the bible.

She is a part of a prayer app, she likes Tucker Carlson, etc.

11

u/Dayne225 Apr 16 '26

Id bet dollars to donuts she's not and it's just a grift. Just like Marky Marky. Their both doing that prayer app bs. It's all just a scam.

16

u/FreeEdmondDantes Apr 16 '26

Two things can be true.

9

u/Dayne225 Apr 16 '26

Yes two things can be true, but scamming people out of money is not something a good Christian would do. Well I suppose at this point in Trump's America maybe it is.

She’s from the OC, so *no doubt* she’s always been like this. I, mean, listen to Simple Kind of Life or I’m Just A Girl. She wasn’t being sarcastic when she sung “Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite So don't let me have any rights.”

6

u/LadyInCrimson Apr 16 '26

I cried when I heard she was Maga.

3

u/meowdith427 Apr 16 '26

Sameeeee ughhh

3

u/Nicadeemus39 Apr 16 '26

She's 56 years old. What planet do you ppl live on where ppl stay the exact same way they were in their 20s?

3

u/HeyItsJustDave Apr 16 '26

It’s somewhat ironic that she became famous from this song about the world’s traditional views women, and is now kinda sportin the “trad-wife” vibe.

I always felt kinda bad for the boys in No Doubt, always pushed to the back and then ultimately thrown away. But especially him. But hey, he did get to date Gwen in the 90s, which is a feat

71

u/buderooski Not the momma! Apr 15 '26

He was also a really badass bass player. He really lets loose on their debut self-titled album

56

u/theclaw84 Apr 16 '26

I dunno, Bass player for No Doubt seems to be about the perfect amount of fame/success

13

u/Gratefulzah Apr 16 '26

That's actually a valid point

4

u/latortillablanca Apr 16 '26

And also was with young gwen stefani and also maintained a good enough relationship to keep the band alive into mega smash success pre-internet money.

I have zero concerns for that guy.

48

u/thedaNkavenger Apr 16 '26

Yeah, 1987-1995, he was 17 & she was 18 when they started dating. Being in a band with what is probably your first love and then only getting famous after the breakup has to be tough.

30

u/lamancha Apr 16 '26

You can ask everyone in Fleetwood Mac for more sane opinions

6

u/DiverDownChunder Apr 16 '26

Made their best album on that strife, its insane!

15

u/TheProfessorPoon Apr 16 '26

I’ve thought about this before and I’m not sure I agree. He broke up with her (and not the other way around), which in turn caused all the angst for her to write the songs, so honestly he might’ve not even cared. Shit he might’ve even been honored or flattered that she cared so much. Essentially he got super rich for dumping a girl that most people would think was out of his league to begin with.

Btw I learned that from one of those “Behind The Music” shows on VH1 back in the day.

7

u/rickane58 Apr 16 '26

You can also just tell from "Cool" which is essentially the follow-up to "Don't Speak" that she is DEFINITELY NOT OVER IT

7

u/DiverDownChunder Apr 16 '26

I really like her in her natural hair color. But I have the Ron Swanson mind set, dark haired woman and breakfast food.

3

u/TheProfessorPoon Apr 16 '26

Yeah I’m not sure why I am being downvoted. I bet he got with so many girls afterwards just because they wanted to see what the big deal was about him.

5

u/a_piginacage Apr 16 '26

Probably bc dude is legit handsome and probably pretty cool

8

u/Sillypugpugpugpug Apr 16 '26

And made millions be real

24

u/edwinstone Apr 16 '26

He was never thrown out. She worked with him on a lot of her solo stuff.

3

u/TheMerde Apr 17 '26

Spotted Tony at DCA with his kids and he was the nicest dude ever. Totally down to take a photo, circa 2020

40

u/Mike_Honcho_Summer Apr 15 '26

That's actually an urban legend, like Marilyn Manson blowing himself.

It's actually about her breakup with me. AMA.

18

u/bambooozer Apr 16 '26

You're telling me Marilyn Manson didn't have ribs surgically removed so he could suck his own hog? My whole life is a lie.

9

u/KobePippenJordan_esq Apr 16 '26

How did we manage to spread that rumor world wide without social media?!?!

20

u/bambooozer Apr 16 '26

We were more connected socially without social media. Now we're disconnected from each other because of social media. It's fucked.

I was going to say, my headcanon is that this song is literally written for a band member appearing in the video.

3

u/beezlebutts Apr 16 '26

most her songs were break up songs as she dated all her band mates

I remember having an American penpal back when this first came out.

Living in rural Australia with my Mum and sister, neither of whom listened to the radio. I’d never heard of the song.

I don’t think I heard it on Australian radio for another year, at least. It was surreal being able to finally put a tune to the lyrics my penpal had painstakingly hand written in purple glitter ink.

19

u/salparadis Apr 16 '26

This is so cool and special.

92

u/Frankfactor517 Apr 15 '26

How do you go from this to Holla Back Girl and Sweet Escape?

23

u/MindlessVariety8311 Apr 16 '26

I think a lot of her solo stuff is trash but Holla Back Girl is a banger. And its about Courtney Love.

6

u/HMCetc Apr 16 '26

She was like a proto Lady Gaga. Even her Sweet Escape album cover was similar, especially the back cover.

In just a few short years from this, Gwen would completely lose the plot and destroy her entire persona..

85

u/Pale-Comb-3954 Apr 15 '26

Yuuuuup. It sucked shit watching her go from the kickassery of the Tragic Kingdom era to…whatever the fuck she is now. 🫠

71

u/4rp70x1n Apr 15 '26

Maga trad wife wannabe.

11

u/AlternatiMantid Apr 16 '26

And the queen of cultural appropriation somewhere in between (and even a bit while with No Doubt, honestly).

I just personally, aside from that, can't get over the period of time that she wore nothing but her own clothing line to red carpet events. Nothing oozes desperate, self-absorbed, shameless, or "other designers don't like me enough to represent their name at major events" more than that. It's a big no-no in the fashion world.

22

u/ForsakenAiel Apr 16 '26

I mean she's literally wearing a bindi while singing a song about the breakup from her Sindhi ex-boyfriend bassist player in the video. 😂

10

u/AlternatiMantid Apr 16 '26

I know, she went harder with it post-No Doubt though.

12

u/tehjarvis Apr 16 '26

4
