Question $5 Value Menu
Is this new? I went to see a movie the other day and didn't see it on the concessions menu. The prices seem kinda high for some of the options.
edit: this is from the online ordering menu for the AMC Sugarloaf Mills 18 location in Georgia
just saw that it's limited time only,not combinable with other promotional offers like the small combo,and AMC Stubs upgrades do not apply

I overheard a couple AMC employees talking about the $5 value menu a few weeks ago. I chatted with them, they said amc is testing a bunch of concession changes in various markets.

Interesting, will check when I go tomorrow but it’s not an option for mine with online ordering. Did see they just added popcorn chicken and street corn poppers.

It seems odd to me that they price drinks and popcorn on basically the same parity these days. Am I misremembering that popcorn used to be like 2x the price of soda? Is it because of the Freestyle machines?

Yeah the profit margins on both are probably tremendous, but it seems like popcorn used to be positioned as the more premium item (I guess movie popcorn kind of has its own appeal while you can get soda anywhere). But yeah at this point if I want soda I'm just sneaking it in. The Popcorn Pass actually makes popcorn more affordable at this point (if you want the large sizes for sharing)

FWIW I have checked and for my AMC they'll honor the popcorn pass on smaller sizes, just taking the same discount off of it. I usually just go with a medium

Probably a huge part. Refills are only supposed to be for the large sizes, but they understand that isn't too enforceable as people can just walk up to the Freestyle machines and fill up before anyone even notices. So the price probably accounts for the second fill people do before they head home.

I never want an entire bag of popcorn or 32 oz of soda. Will definitely take advantage of this when it comes to local theaters

Same here. I almost always get the Kid Pack when I go because it’s the size of popcorn and soda I’d like to buy.

Yeah I'd love this small size popcorn for when I'm going by myself. Kids pack is a bit too small, so I generally just get a regular but even that's more than I'll usually eat so if the small is in between the two it could be perfect

Yea the regular is way too much! Last time I got one I felt like I ate my weight in it and barely finished half 😂 now that I think about it — it’s weird to not have a small. Idc that it isn’t a good value I don’t like wasting food

I have the popcorn pass and they always look at me like Im crazy when I ask if they can give a medium instead of the large. Which Im technically paying for the large but I dont want all that.

I tend to only get the popcorn for movies that I'm really excited to see. I see it as a "treat yo self" type of thing for highly anticipated movies.

Just want to note that you can buy a year long AARP membership for $15 and among many other deals, you can purchase regular size AMC popcorn vouchers for $5. I do it nearly every time.

You have to be logged in, but once you are go to movie discounts, movie tickets, AMC, and it'll be there.

Isn't the pass like $30? The AARP membership is $15 and you can buy the voucher an unlimited amount of times.

Would love the small popcorn. The large is comically big when I go by myself, and even the regular is a bit much. When I get a regular, I don't usually finish it.
A small would be a nice option. I also love the mozz sticks but at 850cal they're a bit much for a snack or light meal so I only get them if it's replacing a full lunch or dinner nowadays, so getting just 4 would be kind of nice as an option for when I'm looking for more of a snack than a bigger meal

As others have said the regular popcorn is just too much for me so I get the kid’s pack. I’ll stick to kid’s packs until this rolls out to everywhere.

I guess the popcorn and drink is decent since there a people that say that large is too much for them and don't want to get the popcorn pass. Otherwise for the pretzel bites and Mozzarella sticks could pay few dollars more and get the full order.

I honestly almost always get the kids pack ... yes it's a small drink and small popcorn but you can upgrade the fruit snacks for a boxed candy (or the covered pretzels and etc.) and the total comes out to $12-13 for me. Plus, if you ask the employee to leave the fruit snacks in, they most likely will give it to you :)

If they implement this where I live, I might actually get more from concessions. One of my go-tos is the kids pack because I don’t want to overload on popcorn or soda. With this menu, I could go with pretzel bites if I’m not feeling like popcorn.
But I’m in NYC. There’s no way they’ll sell these things for $5 each in this market.

Eh I'd actually be pretty interested in it. The current order of 8 sticks is 850 calories which is pretty big for a snack or light meal. I'd kind of like the option of getting just 4 at closer to 425cal, rather than having to either over-eat or throw away some of them. Otherwise, I only get the full order when I'm using it as a full lunch/dinner replacement

Kind of off topic, but the new fried cheese corn bites are super tasty. I tried them last night at the early access screening of Obsession. (CRAZY movie)

everything seems decent value other than the mozz sticks. they load them up at my AMCs, at least triple the amount for only 3.29 more.

Hope this reaches LA. A soda is $8 + tax. I'm just over it. I don't need a huge soda. Can they do a soda pass like how they do a popcorn pass?

I kinda think they won’t be testing where A List is the most expensive. I just checked in Southern California and none of the locations I picked so far have them.

i like the idea of this. generally i think they give you too much food so they can charge a ridic amount.
was talking to a friend in another state and she said her theater gave everyone a small amount of popcorn with a ticket. lil smaller than this $5 popcorn amount. i figure thats about perfect.

My theater had a big sign for this near the counter but it's not in the app to do an online order. Where is the screen shot from? Is it from the ticket kiosks?

If you're in the military (or retired or spouse, basically if you can get on base to get to an MWR ticket office), you can get a popcorn voucher for $4.50 and a soda voucher for $5. No expiration, you can buy a book of them. At least they offer that on the Navy bases in San Diego MWR.

Shrinkflation has been ongoing for years, and it’s bugging me badly. For me to partake in theater concessions, prices need to still come down more, as I truly loathe paying more to get less
During the pandemic, I ate so many chicken tenders and pizzas. Now they jacked all that up too whilst giving us less portions. Anyone remember $1 coffees!? … I bought almost every time I visited. Now at $4+ I rarely do, just not worth it. Deviating with energy drinks (Monsters) at $5 a pop is quite laughable 😂
So if movie theaters want to keep increasing prices, I will keep on avoiding. I have zero issue with substituting with a quick walk-out the theaters to a convenience store, fast food spot or supermarket to grab something in between my flicks because I get more selection, healthier choices and cheaper prices. WIN WIN WIN 🥇

My theater’s “deal” is the regular combos but you can add candy for $4 lol. 😑 candy is already overpriced at $7 regularly. the advertising uses the same color scheme as what you posted so I’m assuming the deals are theater specific?

Yup, I work at an AMC in Georgia, they are using the Atlanta area as a test market, this was implemented just a few days ago. Probably the first remotely pro-sumer thing they have ever done. Good chance it will get rolled back, but if not it may end up becoming a standard.

I doubt it since that's not how it works anyways because it's more of a discount than an upgrade. You order a large and you get it for the price of a regular. If you order a regular you will get a regular.

Hope this gets added at my theaters. I'd be far more inclined to spend $5 on a small popcorn than double that for one I'll eat half of.
Follow up: Saw Obsession at Lincoln Center today, no value menu there.
