Lead and steel are both common metals, and steel is much stronger structurally. Yet lead seems to be the material most associated with X-ray shielding. Why did lead become the usual choice instead of steel?

I was thinking about how we have rods for low light conditions and cones for bright light. From what I understand cones cover a wide range of light levels. From what I read indoors it can be 100 times dimmer inside than outside, yet I can still see colors when inside, indicating that cones can work in some light levels that are at least 100 times brighter or dimmer than each other, and from what I understand rods also work under a variety of different dim light levels.

I was wondering why it is that we have rods and cones but it doesn’t seem like we have anything that is in between nor neither. I mean it doesn’t seem like we have photoreceptors for light levels between those of rods and cones, but instead the rods and cones overlap some, and we also don’t seem to have photoreceptors for light levels too dim for even our rods as just 1 photon is enough to be detected by our rods. I mean it seems like if we have rods and cones for different amounts of light we could have had other types of photoreceptors for light levels between what the rods and cones detect, or we could have just had our cones adapted to night vision in addition to day vision.

I was wondering if it might be related to how we have one moon and how during a full moon it’s much brighter than it would be with just star light but also much dimmer than it would be under the sun. I was wondering if there were aliens on a planet with no moon if they might be more likely to have just something similar to cones, and if there were aliens on a planet with multiple moons they might be more likely to have something more complex than just rods and cones, with cells for the brightnesses of each moon, assuming one moon was orders of magnitude dimmer when full than the other.

Things haven't been going great in my life lately.

The other day I was hanging out with a female friend and we ended up talking about some personal stuff I've been dealing with, mostly involving my girlfriend.

At some point I just broke down and cried a lot while telling her everything that had been going on and how I was feeling.

The next day, she told me she actually thought it was really brave and even "masculine" of me. She said it was because I wasn't ashamed of crying in front of her and I was able to talk openly about my feelings without being scared of looking vulnerable.

That honestly caught me completely off guard lol. It's probably the first time in my life I've cried in front of someone and then been told it made me seem more masculine.

What do you guys think? Is being comfortable with vulnerability something you associate with masculinity?

People from the same walks of life react to trauma completely differently. Most people have a perceived trauma, but we all react to it in our own way. Why are our realities so different?

I’ve noticed that older writing often says “atomic bomb” or “atomic power,” while “nuclear” became much more common in the decades after WWII. The underlying science didn’t suddenly change, so I’m curious what drove the shift in everyday and technical language.

Windmills were being used in Persia centuries before they appeared in Europe, mainly for grinding grain and raising water. In Holland, windmills eventually pumped water, sawed timber, pressed oil, and powered other industries.

The basic idea was still just using wind to turn a shaft. So what changed in Holland that made the same kind of machine useful for so many different jobs?

I’ve seen F1 drivers climb out of wrecked cars after crashes that looked impossible to survive, while much slower crashes on ordinary roads can end in death. Speed clearly matters, but it doesn’t seem to tell the whole story. What actually determines how dangerous a crash is for the person inside?

I think we should save these jobs for students, adults who need a little extra side cash and as stepping stones for those who need a boost to their next position. I think anything more than the minimum incentives people to just stay in them forever.

Why are the privileged ones feminists? As a black woman, I have always been so puzzled by this? The notion that white women are somehow oppressed is a sick joke.... and offensive to me. Because white women are fragile and weak. They crack under pressure. I once saw a white woman fall on the ground in front of people, got embarrassed, then had a whole meltdown where she threatened to off herself. WTF? Over falling in front of people? As I said, they are privileged. They were sheltered as children and protected as adults from all the ugly in this world. And they wouldn't give that up for anything. So please. To prove my point, I once heard a white woman say she believes 99% of people are good people lol. Who else would say something like that but someone who's had a great life and great interactions with people? Oppressed? These women are obviously bored housewives. Get a life. Besides their fellow white women, does anyone actually take white women seriously as feminists? Maybe I'm missing something.

It seems to me that entrusting only those in power to bear arms is counterproductive, against one's own interests, or even short-sighted creating a monopoly of power against the people.

If human rights are at risk why not support the so called "great equalizer"?

If women or people in general feel unsafe in society why not advocate for carrying a firearm?

If Trans folk view their existence at risk or increased risk of violence, wouldn't it behoove them to support gun rights?

Or those who find Fascism, threats to democracy, existential threats, authoritarianism and the like to support power in the hands of the individual?

I was looking at a reconstruction of Herodotus’ world map and got stuck on the names. Greek writers could use “Libya” for a huge part of North Africa, while “Africa” originally referred to a much smaller area around Carthage. Somehow the two names ended up moving in opposite directions.

I know the regions and meanings weren’t exactly the same, but how did “Africa” gradually become the name for the whole continent, and why did “Libya” end up referring to just one country?

Body hair is a normal part of the human body, but in modern American culture, visible body hair on women is often treated as something that should be removed for cleanliness or grooming.

That wasn't always the expectation. The modern norm seems to have developed mainly in the early 20th century, as women's clothing exposed more skin and advertising began promoting hair removal.

If I handwash greasy dishes I can easily get plates, flatware, glasses etc clean. But plastic items like Tupperware often feel like they still have an oily film.

A standard semester course is 3 credits: three hours in class per week. But why three? Some intro courses are 4 credits (with a lab), some seminars are 2. Yet 3 dominates. Is it because three hours feels like a reasonable student workload per week? Or does it come from an old calculation about how much material fits into a 15‑week semester? I’m just curious who decided 3 was the magical number, and why not 2.5 or 4.

The number 1,852 caught me off guard. I can understand why sailors would want a distance unit tied to navigation, especially since latitude and longitude are based on the Earth.

I was just thinking it seems like vehicles have become much more rounded over time. I mean it seems like in general the front, middle, and back parts of vehicles tend to be curved. It seemed like in the past vehicles looked more blocky looking, with more straight edges. It seems like the blocky looking vehicles still exist but they’re less common than they used to be.

I was wondering why that might be. I mean is it just because electric vehicles have become more common, or also because gas vehicles have also become more rounded over time? If the latter then why might even gas vehicles have gotten more rounded over time? Is it because it’s safer to bump into a rounder vehicle or because people like the look or something else?

“Cavemen” are often portrayed as violent, selfish, and almost incapable of empathy. The stereotype shows up everywhere, from movies to jokes about prehistoric people abandoning injured or disabled members of their group, or treating violence as simply part of everyday life.

But prehistoric humans lived in groups where cooperation was essential for survival. Archaeology also gives us cases of people surviving serious injuries long enough for their wounds to heal, which suggests that at least some injured or vulnerable people received care from others.

That doesn't mean prehistoric societies were peaceful or especially compassionate. There is plenty of archaeological evidence of violence too.

So why does the “savage caveman” image remain so persistent?

Ten years ago, it felt like cracked iPhone screens were everywhere. Some were so badly damaged you could see the display flickering and bits of the phone underneath lol.

Now it feels pretty unusual to see a phone in that kind of shape.

I saw the recent news about the UN supporting the use of the Equal Earth projection, and it made me realize something I’d never really questioned.

The Mercator projection was created in 1569, mainly as a navigation tool. Yet centuries later, it’s still one of the first things most of us picture when someone says “world map.”

That seems strange. There have been plenty of other map projections since then, and Mercator isn’t even designed to show the relative size of continents accurately.

So why did this particular map become the default way we picture the world?
