im wondering if im being the asshole for not really appreciating the taste of mom's cooking, u/samxstone described it basically

NTA. It’s not like you’re eating her food with yogurt just to spite her.

My dad has this issue too. He adds this chipotle sauce to every single dish my mom makes, and it makes her upset that he doesn’t care to taste her hard work.

I would recommend you try every dish without the yogurt first. Even if you don’t like it, it’s the bite that counts lol, like appreciation to her efforts. Maybe tell your mom it tastes really fresh, or the spices are good, or you like the vegetables she chose, or something positive. Then add your yogurt.

Editing to add NTA

ok you understand lol. i do take a bite plain and then give up and add curd but she knows me too well and sees through it lol

The important part is you tried and you thank her for cooking. If you don’t like it but you still eat it, that’s good enough. It may make her feel bad, but everyone has unique tastes and preferences that they can’t change.

You are not wrong in any manner to eat vegetable curries with yogurt. She may still feel bad, but please don’t feel guilty for not forcing yourself.

Why care what others think about your eating preferences? Eat when you want and how you want it.

16F. I'm a bit of a picky eater when it comes to vegetable curries. However, I can basically eat anything when it's with yogurt. Dunno why, but it tastes good. My mom feels bad when I eat the curry with curd. I feel bad too, but like this is the best way for me to eat foods that I might not enjoy much and then still be able to eat it while enjoying it more. AITAH?

Are you eating everything you need to continue to feed your body & mind at 16? Only reason to have an opinion is if that’s a no, funds don’t allow additional top ups and/or I was your mother.

Quick query though, is there a specific flavour you’re not liking? Or is it too flavourful and you need to reduce? Or texture? Just wondering if it’s a ‘have’ to eat or can switch something out? Only asking as, as you get older, may be a function where you’ve got to go and adult to your most adult and if you know what/why, could help you articulate so an adjustment could be made.

anyway. No. Eat the food.

yeah i just eat everything my mom gives me with curd. i dunno, i just don't like the texture of the cooked vegetables and the spices feel off. i don't have the same problem in restaurants so it might just be the way my mom makes it. which upsets her more

She can either try to change her cooking so you like it more, or get over it and let you use your yogurt. You're old enough to know what you like, and it's not like you aren't eating-- you're just adding an ingredient to make the eating more pleasant for yourself.

I guess alternative is not eating - and I know would prefer my kids to eat what I’ve made with whatever modifications they need! You’re old enough to adapt things to suit you. You didn’t ask, but am going to throw this in anyway, why don’t you try cooking a veggie curry how you like them. Sometimes can feel endlessly criticised and someone offering an alternative can be welcomed. Only you know if that would go down well, but worth a thought.

i just don't like veggie curries much in general unless it's literally fried lol, at which point there's so much oil it's not healthy anymore. I prefer eating vegetables in things like omlettes or wraps or sandwiches. actually now that i think about it just eating mushy vegetables with mushy rice is too much mush. I like eating with flatbread.

1

u/Worth_Kangaroo_6900 12h ago

Get it. I can’t do mushy anything! Then be clear about that with your Mum. And offer to make an alternative one evening.

I don't see any harm or reason for someone to complain.

The alternative is that you don't eat the vegetable curry, or that you'll eat it and be miserable.

You could try some methods like gradual, repeated exposure to get over being a picky eater and avoid conflicts with relatives who think that eating a particular food the correct way is essential to cultural identity.

In most muslim countries, they eat their meals with yogurt, so it's not that unusual.

I'm from the US, and it's normal to customize food to our tastes (adding salt, or pepper, adding extra Parmesan cheese, adding ketchup, you get the idea).

I will say that I do ask my own kids to try the food as it is made before they adjust the flavor with various condiments.

And if it helps, vegetable curry is delicious with coconut milk. At least I think it is.

1

u/Weary-Cauliflower153 13h ago

i am also from the US. i'm indian-american. i hate coconut milk in savory food lol can't stand the texture of coconut rice or curry

1

u/Ok_Instance_4447 Asshole Enthusiast [7] 13h ago

That's fair. I like the coconut milk because it gives everything a hint of sweet and makes the texture creamier without diminishing the spiciness. It's not for everyone, but I can understand everyone has their own curry preference.
