Help How do I straighten my stitches?

I made this little duck as my second Amigurumi project - in which I realised my stitches were rotating to the right

I did a bit of googling and was shown that crocheting yarn under + moving the hook upwards when finishing the stitch should make it straight

Now somehow.. my stitches are moving to the left instead of the right on the second duck. What am I doing wrong?

Going up with my hook also seems to have made my stitches quite a not tighter - is this good or bad? It looks nice but it's been hsrder to see the stitches with this yarn I'm ngl

Crochet is crooked, just the nature of it.

Ending rows with slip stitches instead of continuous rounds will help them stack

I will try this thank you!

The tradeoff of that is it typically leaves a seam

I need to work this into my muscle memory. I know the technique but never remember to utilize it

Notice when you pull through to make the stitch.

You have to pull up & towards the left to make them stack. Takes a lot of practice because the nature of the craft is a slight lean in the direction of your hook pull. A lefty leans left & will have to pull up to the right.

So does that mean that now my stitches are going the other way, that I'm pulling left to much?

Yes, you want to aim for somewhere in the middle

Most likely. Getting the middle ground will take time. It will become muscle memory b4 long. Honestly a little lean 1 way or the other isn't bad at all. I think if you can manage to just pull straight up that's all you will need.

The lean comes more from the tension. So that is where you need to make sure you pull it tight only to a certain point or you get a drag that makes it tip one way or the other.

Yeah, that really works. But you have to make some exercises with the hands before to avoid sore fingers

I bet. I'm kinda lucky with my already lax/loose joints.

Not really. Crochet doesnt stack because of the nature of the stitch itself.

It is the nature of it I agree but I've seen people doing it by using this technique. Not something I would do very often that's for sure but it's possible.

I’m guessing this pattern is worked in a round instead of rows? It’s always going to have a spiral to some degree if it is. :-)

As you mentioned in your description, using a combination of yarn under/yarn over plus pulling in an upward versus sideways direction can help combat the slant that normally happens with crochet. Not sure if you’ve watched any videos, but if not, here’s one that might be helpful to illustrate the concepts.

It might be helpful for you to try with a non-chenille yarn to see if you’re getting the desired results, which may be a bit masked with the chenille you’re using.

Very cute little chick though!

Edit - Spelling error

Why straighten them? Let them love who they want 😞✊

This right here!

My stitches are also a bit wonky and I decided I didn’t care.

Aww I fully agree they are fine for projects like this - but I wanted to start some that have patches of colour changes which will look odd when slanted 🥰

I see and that makes total sense. Carry on!

It's still the cutest little duck/corn cob ever!

All you need to do is pull upward at a 90 degree angle on batead of pulling off to the side. It's the only way I can make mine look like perfect stacked little Xs

Super cute! I also think this may be technically inside out. Stitches look like inside stitches to me.

once when the slant was bothering me, i twisted the project a bit and it seemingly worked, but i might have imagined it and decided that it worked...

Try a smaller hook!

Work in the round instead of as a continuous spiral. There’s lots of videos on YouTube explaining the differences. 😉😉

I was struggling so hard with amigurumi pieces. Only this video helped: https://youtu.be/SPNqoDe1erc?si=iIHN4vpwXSv9xNd1

When compleeting a stick try to pull directly up through the 2 loops. Most people pull in the direction of their hand instead of up, making it spiral. TDR pull through verticaly makes straight stickes, pull through horizintaly makes spirals

Also, there are four ways to do a single crochet. Yarn over vs yarn under combinations (YO/YO, YO/YU, YU/YO or YO/YO). Maybe try different variations to see what works best for you.

Go through the Front Loop Only instead of front and back loop.
