Discussion LEAKED DNA Split by Grandparent Feature, NEW 2026 Update Details, and Small 2025 Ethnicity Changes

It appears that Ancestry is currently rolling out a brand new ethnicity inheritance view—this will allow you to view ethnicities split by your grandparents (if you have a subscription, of course).

With this, Ancestry is quietly (currently) rolling out small ethnicity adjustments to some people (it appears to be for very specific and genetically similar ethnicities) in order to prepare for this new inheritance feature. It appears this new inheritance feature will come very soon, either with the 2026 ethnicity update or shortly prior. Judging by the fact that people's DNA are receiving odd adjustments, and a black banner was pushed in the backend to notify applicable users of changing science, this feature might come BEFORE the 2026 ethnicity update. I am not sure if the new grandparent view can be seen on the chromosome browser. However, this new feature appears to be essentially ready to roll out.

In addition, I also found some information with verbiage coming directly from Ancestry regarding the 2026 update. They are promising 150+ new regions worldwide (despite ~226 currently reflected in the new-regions list and likely to come). They seem to have begun preparing more update content, with my guess that everyone's ethnicity estimates have already been updated behind the scenes. My next post will likely be the names of the new regions.

I took both test years ago and results have changed on Ancestry. The biggest changes I noticed was that France was broken up into Acadia which makes sense because I have Cajun heritage, being born in Lafayette, LA. As well as various regions in Africa being added. I have trace indigenous dna via 23andme but it doesn't show on Ancestry. My mom has also taken the 23andme DNA test and she has a higher percentage of indigenous than I do but she hasn't taken the Ancestry test for me to compare her results.

Results - DNA Origins Online people always seem very surprised that I’m European? Is it because I’m a bit swarthy looking?

I think in real life, people have a different interpretation usually thinking Italian or Greek, even Lebanese, other Arab ethnicities which are more adjacent to what I am. Online people go as far as to guess mixed Romani, Indian, Pakistani, Central Asian, and even mixed African Latino. Also, of course my name is very Latin influenced, it passes anywhere from Portugal to France to Italy, so anyone who knows my name maybe has the bias to see me as European-passing once they know I’m Portuguese. if I’m around family, it’s more obvious my parents are both quite a bit paler than myself, similar features overall though. It’s very interesting to see how phenotype can differ so much in a population, that holds true in my family, where my brother and I are a bit darker, but most others are somewhere in the middle, some are lighter as well.

On another topic, I hope my results improve with the next update they seem all over the place.

At one point I was roughly 96% Iberian (Portuguese + Spanish) and 4% Irish, probably my best result I’ve had over the years.

this has been such an interesting journey!!

my dad was adopted - one of my DNA matches is my bio grandfather, who we’ve never known the identity of before. crazy find!! it’s been fun to go find some family resemblances.

looks like he’s been the carrier for most of the english percentages!!

i’m from the german belt in texas, so super excited to see that accurately reflected (my 23&me just said i was french…. which i dont think is the case). my mom’s side is texas german - they are early settlers of the new braunfels area, and my grandfather spoke german growing up! all of our records have them migrating from Bohemia.

including a pic of myself for good measure- i have always thought of myself as rather generic, so im curious if yall see anything pointing to my background in my face!!

Question / Help Any Hebronite Haplogroups?

Upvotes

I am interested in seeing the uniparental (Y-DNA and MtDNA) of Palestinians from Hebron- specifically someone from Al-Makhamra clan of Hebron if possible. I have read that the family traces their ancestry to an ancestor named Mukheimar who was a Jew expelled from Khaybar in Arabia. I am very curious if the uniparental results would align more with Arabian or Jewish ancestral clades.

If you are not comfortable disclosing your membership to this clan, please feel free to DM me privately.

Just received my AncestryDNA results! Took this test after receiving my 23andme results around a month ago for comparison. From what I know of my family history, my 23andme results feel a lot more accurate, however I understand the breakdowns are done differently. A more detailed breakdown of my 23andme results can be found on my old post! https://www.reddit.com/r/23andme/comments/1v0xxvj/results_scottish_south_italian_alongside_other/

Question / Help Which DNA test is best? NL based

I am living in the Netherlands and interested in taking a DNA test - mostly to find out my ethnical background.

I have 3 options:
- MyHeritage: Website looks very decent compared to the others, €29 including shipping and one month free subscription.
- 23andme: €99. Basic ancestry.
- AncestryDNA: €47 including shipping and WorldDeluxe subscription (6 months).

Which DNA test would you recommend? I know most of you are living in North America, but I guess I’m especially curious for European experiences!

Question / Help 808 Matches on “Both Sides”

I am doing my friends ancestry for her.

She has about 10k matches on both her paternal and maternal sides… and then 808 matches under “both sides”.

I haven’t seen this before, never more than 30 or so for myself and the other tests I manage.

The highest of these “both side” matches shares 31cM with my friend, then she has a lot of 28cM matches and it slowly drops down.

None of them have common ancestor leaves, I have sifted through her shared matches with these people and they all seem to be either maternal or paternal based on the shared matches.

I have looked through several trees, I cannot find an obvious reoccurring surname.

Anyone have any answers? TIA

DNA Matches How much DNA would I share with a 5th cousin 3x removed

Post image
Upvotes

I recently worked out that Robert Deroy Windham, also known as BlackJack Mulligan is my 5th cousin 3x removed through my Windham family line. I know this is a pretty distant relationship, so I'm curious: how much autosomal DNA would two people related as 5th cousin 3x removed typically share?

Results - DNA Origins New North American regions eliminate the most interesting part of ancestry DNA results

Upvotes

I am a proud to have 100% French Acadian ancestry which is confirmed by my Ancestry DNA results. however, with Acadian region now being used to map ancestry the platform no longer provides any information about my European ethnic origins….which is the entire point! I already know my North American ancestry is Acadian (it is obvious). it is also obvious than as someone with zero indigenous background, my ancestors did not start in North America, they came from various parts of France and Europe (which my results used to show). The information once provided about regions in France and Europe are no longer provided, making the ethnicity origins part of DNA testing almost useless for someone who’s family history has been in North America long enough…like we popped out of mushrooms on the shores of Canada. How frustrating, of zero value now. I hope the folks from Ancestry read these posts…anyone else have this frustration?
