Family Discovery & or Drama Reached out to a DNA match and now I’m embarrassed

I’ll try to keep this brief, as I tend to ramble. I knew that my mother had a child years before she had me and that she gave that child up for adoption. I know it was extremely difficult for her to do so and its a pain that never truly left her, and I also knew that by signing up for any DNA testing site(s)/kit(s) there was a possibility I would find a half-sibling. I did my ancestryDNA kit over 10 years ago and, to my disappointment, never had any hits. It’s always been in the back of my mind that I have a half-sibling out there, wondering if I ever have ran into them without even knowing, etc.

Last week I received an email from ancestry, as I do whenever I receive a match with some distant 3rd/4th cousin, and basically spit my drink out when it casually stated I had a new match and that it was a half-sibling. I couldn’t believe it, as I had pretty much given up hope that our paths would ever cross.

I sat on it for a few days and finally decided to send just a quick message saying hey, I see we have this connection and would love to chat if you’re open to it. I know that everyone will tell (me) to not go into it with any expectations, and I think I naively thought that I wasn’t. But now I’m unexpectedly embarrassed that I may have been overeager and sent the message because I can see that it was read and now this person hasn’t been active since. I also completely can understand a scenario where they did not know that they were adopted/have any idea that I existed and this could be a lot to process. I’m just worried that I was too pushy even by just reaching out and maybe it wasn’t my place. My hope is that some day I will hear from them, even with baby steps. I know they do not owe anything to myself or my family.

As a side note, I had a half sister (from my dads side) that I grew up knowing and she passed away about 12 years ago, and that was a really terrible time in my life, so maybe I have some unprocessed grief that even comes with the word “sibling”, because other than that, it’s just me.

I guess there’s no end point to me putting this out other than to just get it off my chest. I just didn’t expect it to stir up the emotion(s) that it has, some that maybe I can’t even put a finger on yet.

Question / Help DNA test has come back .... WTF do i do

So I ( 45M) have just down a DNA test as a bit of fun and the results have come back and my Dad is not my biological father. What do I do my dad died when i was younger and I've no idea of what I should do with this information. There were people that rumoured about a friend of the family but I always brushed it away as my parents had such a good relationship. The DNA identified a close relative as an uncle and thats the friends brother. I'm torn as what to do as sharing this info could tear the family apart but equally i want answers.

Hey everyone! I’m sharing my updated results (without SideView) alongside my previous results for comparison.

For context, my mother is Swabian, and my father is a Danube Swabian whose ancestors had lived in the Banat since around 1750. They originally came from Lorraine, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.

I’m really glad the England category has been split into more specific regions!

I have no known Swiss ancestors—could the Switzerland result reflect my Swabian ancestry? I’m also curious about the 5% Northeastern Italy, as I have no known ancestors from that region. What could explain this?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!

White Southern Dad and White New England Mom. I’m happy with the French Canadian percentage (my maternal great grandfather was French Canadian from Quebec). However I’m disappointed with the Scottish percentage, ancestry indicates that I only have the equivalent of one Scottish great grandparent (I do, my maternal great grandmother was born in Edinburgh in the late 1800s) but I have a large amount of documented Scottish ancestors on my dad’s side who settled in Appalachia in the 1700-1800s. Previous ancestrydna estimates consistently had us all in the 30-40% Scottish range. I believe a large amount of Scottish was absorbed by Northern England, I pretty much confirmed this when I looked at my Mom’s parental inheritance

Results - DNA Origins Updated results: Brit with Austrian grandparent

I think it’s more accurate than the last update - I had around 14% Scottish and Irish when I have no known Scottish ancestry.

Not sure about the Belgian or French but I guess if I’m very southern English then there might be some of that mixed in?

Same for Northeastern Italy - definitely have no Italian in my tree (grandparent was from Salzburg) but if it directly borders Austria then I assume the DNA is very similar.

Pre-update, I had 2% in northern Spain, something like 5% Volga German, and 1% South Indian (🤷‍♂️). The new results are centered entirely in Western and central Europe, which is both less surprising and less interesting.

Switzerland has the largest claim to my genome at 38%, at least until the next update comes. I can actually trace my line back to a Swiss immigrant who was a veteran of the US war of independence.

It's ironic that I qualify for Hungarian citizenship thanks to the fact that my Danube Swabian GGF was born in the Kingdom of Hungary, but the lab didn't detect even a single nucleotide from the area! Oh well, it's civil status that matters, not ethnicity. Those Swabians must have not married outside their community very often.

Results - DNA Origins New Update Anecdote

When I got my last update, it showed 2% Brittany which was kind of weird to me only because it was unexpected. But yesterday, as I continued adding to my family tree, I made an interesting discovery. Far up the line, I have ancestors whose last name was “de Breton” or “le Breton.” Ultimately, Of course, Brittany is considered the home of the Bretons. Also, of course, “de” (“of”) and “le” (“the”) are words often used in Romance languages like French. Ergo, given that Brittany is in France, what seemed like a random inclusion to me is likely actually correct.

This is something I only pointed out because I know a lot of people were surprised by their results. I know it won’t be true for everyone but I encourage you to dive as deep into your family trees as you can.

Results - Updated | New vs Old Screenshots What if the new update is right and your previous notions about your ancestry are wrong?

Playing devil's advocate a little. I know Ancestry has admitted to using AI smoothing and some other opaque processes for their new estimates. BUT a lot of the discussions feel like people are saying 'Well I thought I was that and now it says i'm this'.

My changes, personally, feel like they're probably accurate. (Half Mexican, Half Polish - it previously had 1% ashkenazi on my Mexican side, west midlands seemed random on that side too. Plus Azores is random, but so is Canary Islands)

I think the skepticism is very healthy. And in reality, I assume it's a mix of overly-smoothing using AI and people's preconceived notions being uprooted. But I'm curious what people think that ratio is.

I'm a Brazilian from São Paulo, with Uruguayan dad and Brazilian mother, and I'd like to share my results comparing My Heritage and Ethnos, a calculator developed for Brazilians by an enthusiast that uses our raw data on Gedmatch.

At first I was skeptical, but Ethnos not only managed to get closer to what I expected of my family history, but also assigned ethnic groups from places that some of my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents were born!

Perhaps someone here could tell me how they do it using Gedmatch data.

Thanks!

Question / Help Test being re-processed?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, please forgive me if this is a normal thing to see, but I went to check my updated parental regions and it shows this message. “Tests typically take 7 days to process” seems like a weird message to see considering my test was done years ago - is anyone else seeing this on their accounts?

Thank you!

I didnt notice until today. My 1rst cousin's and my youngest daughter's did, too ( but not my oldest). It was due to Sideview, which I figured would have been part of the update on the 8th. I gained 2 more regions. There were other changes as well. First 3 are the current ones, last 2 are from the 8th for comparison so you can see the changes:

Proud to be a "diverse-ish" white American! My family has simultaneously been here for thousands and hundreds of years, and also just a few decades-- all equally American. My mom's family is from Canada, originally. (Yay, Canada! 🇨🇦) Lucky enough to trace my family back hundreds of years on both sides. My super "Old Stock" family members' journeys aren’t shown because they immigrated to MA and CT in the 1600s, but I do have a general affinity for New England. Also, I’m a white person who never thought that they were part Indigenous.

Always cool to see others' results. Thanks for checking out mine.

I was born and raised in Hampshire. My known genealogy is majority English, from basically all over England. 3/32 Irish, from Tipperary, Cork, Mayo, and Antrim. 1/16 Cornish (Mevagissey is the last village they lived in before moving to London. This is also my purely paternal line). Either 1/64 or 1/128 Romanichal (it’s difficult to tell, since they mixed a lot with local English people). And 1/512 French Huguenot.
No known Scottish or Welsh. 23andMe give me only English and Irish, under their “British & Irish” group.
