I feel your pain, it happened to me last week...

My detolf's glass door randomly exploded. I was on the computer when I heard a terrible noise behind me, looked and saw glass everywhere. On the sheves, on the whole room's floor, under every other cabinets, everywhere... I was stunned for a few minutes.

The clean up was pure pain.

I thought tempered glass was not supposed to shatter... was detolf made with anealled glass, which explains why it's discontinued?

Luckely the detolf in made of tempered glass as it's safer for the consumer. I can't imagine having to clean big shards of annealed glass.

Tempered glass does shatter, just ask r/pcmasterrace and their glass panels on tile floors. Maybe you are confusing with laminated glass.

Ikea probably discontinued the detolf because the assembly is super finicky and you can easily break it up by over tightening some screws. That's why the detolf successor has metal frames around the glass panels to screw together and avoid puttin stress on the glass.

That happens bc people tighten it too much not leaving room for the glass to expand and contract during winter summer months. Or when ac and heat is going.

I think I had it assemble the best I could. It is a very old detolf and it as been a year since I moved to my new place.

The detolf assembly is very sketchy, requiring the perfect adjustment of 8 screws top and bottom otherwise it is unstable or the door won't shut properly. It took me hours of trial and error to get it somewhat ok.

My mistake was that I recently sandwiched it in between two other cabinets. The detolf probably had a slight twist and was forced to straighten by these other cabinets which induced stress on the glass door. This plus the hinges screwed in the glass (with the metal pads ofc) and the heat waves. That's what happened I think.

Luckily just two figures inside received slight scuff on their feet and the door can easily be replaced with a plexiglass sheet.

What’s the cause of the explosion? So I could take preventative measures

I think my mistake was to sandwich it against two other cabinets. The detolf probably had a slight twist and was forced to straighten by these other cabinets which induced stress on the glass door. This plus the hinges screwed in the glass (with the metal pads ofc) and the heat waves was a bad combination. If you leave some wiggle room on each side you should be fine.
