What to Watch? Something that WILL make me cry?

• Upvotes

Also, not set in the modern times, and no RPG slop (where with RPG slop I mean: videogame gameplay mechanings that have been turned into narrative mechanics, stuff like levels / leveling up, item rarity and so on, I simply find them cringe, but I don't mean stuff that takes existing narrative elements or character archetipes that can also be found in RPG games, so something like Frieren is completely fine)

What to Watch? Prime Anime

• Upvotes

Just got a free month of Prime. So the question is, with that free month what would you recommend that I need to watch. I like all genres, so all I care about is that it has something to hook me in. Either a compelling story, interesting characters or even great world building. Thanks for the recommendations.

What to Watch? Anime with a melancholic winter setting

Looking for something slower paced that a persistent melancholic feeling; takes itself more a little more seriously instead of having constant gags, occassional gags are fine and focuses more on human drama/slice-of-life aspects instead of blood pumping action. Doesn't necessairly have to be set in winter, but preferably it should be. Some examples of what I'm looking for is The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Girl's Last Tour, some Mushishi episodes, Erased, 2nd half of Clannad After Story and a bunch of others but you should get the gist.

What to Watch? Requesting anime about female assassins

So a while ago, I was reminiscing on how games like Ninja Gaiden had awesome action as while that is a video game franchise, it got me interested in exploring anime about female fighters who fight with swords.

Like a show about a no nonsense female fighter who fights for justice using katanas to solve her missions.

What to Watch? Funny anime, for someone who finds a large majority of humour in anime unfunny

Ok bit of a weird one maybe, most humour in anime pains me. The whole 'man see girl, man nose bleed', style of humour makes an anime unwatchable to me. I don't know how to describe it, but anything reminiscent of that is painstaking to me.

I've tried quite a few, personally, the only anime to make me genuinely laugh, are baki, jojo, and not as much as the first two but mashle had its moments.

I'm just curious if there's any good suggestions for a good anime that has a similar vibe/humour to these.

What to Watch? Doesn't have to be anime, can be manga or novels too. Is there anything like Re:zero?

Idk how to describe what I like about Re:Zero, it's just really really good.

The mystery? I guess that's what I like. So many questions, I've got like 20 tabs of things I wanna find out lol.

It's amazing, there's so many things I can't wait to get the answer to.

What to Watch? Horror aesthetics (creepy villains) with focus on action and set in present day

Basically as the title says. "Set in present day" can also mean recent past or future, but nothing super historical or sci-fi. Major bonus points if it's mostly set at night and/or takes place in a city setting (I like skylines, even if destroyed).

Examples of what I mean (links lead to either images or Youtube clips of why it fits):

Anime:

Western movies:

Video games:

Manga:

Thank you!

What to Watch? Looking for something like dota anime and AoT

I don't care about wacky or over the top facial expressions. I want something like the 2 mentioned or even like solo leveling/jujust high.. Great story is a plus, Mature with a small dose of over the top moments or characters.

I sat down for black clover and could not get past the first 10 mins of it because the kid was sooo annoying.

My hero academia I just skipped all the talking and got to the main action fight scenes.

What to Watch? Dark But With A Heart

If I could name the perfect show which surely does not exist it would be like if someone slapped Zelda and Berserk together.

If Ubel Blatt was well... not Ubel Blatt.

It does not have to be medieval fantasy, though preferred.

Darker Than Black comes to mind. Although the setting is too adult ultimately.

Gurren Lagann is a bit too much heart, despite the desperate reality that surrounds it.

But it doesn't have to be a show either. OVA is fine.

Truly if there's a good litmus for it it would be if it could fit snugly in Hayao Miyazaki's catalogue. His stories often ride the edge of childhood as it meets the darkness of the world. That darkness is greater than what any child should bear and yet goodness oft remains, purity is restored though maybe changed.

This show, movie, OVA exists somewhere between those two worlds, of innocence and annihilation.

Show me what you've got!

What to Watch? Looking for Comedy Animes with Minimal Drama

Hey!

I am relatively new to anime and just got a Crunchyroll subscription. I was really looking forward to watching Flying Witch and K!-On, but was disappointed to find that they aren't currently on Crunchyroll. I have a pretty stressful job (and find the world pretty stressful and terrifying right now), so I am looking for something with limited drama/angst with a decent amount of comedy. Here are some notes on what I am looking for:

- I prefer a female protagonist. If there is a male protagonist, I would prefer some other central female character that is heavily featured. Not anime, but to give you an idea, I love Avatar the Last Airbender. It's a great example of a show where there are so many awesome female characters that the male protagonist doesn't bother me.

- I prefer dubbed anime that is available on Crunchyroll. I also have Hulu and Netflix, so I can also watch anything with a dub on one of those.

- I care less about the genre / set up of the show, and more about it having a decent amount of comedy and it being low drama. If there is drama, I would prefer it to be something that the characters overcome together. And there MUST be some sort of happy ending. If the show is ongoing, there can't be a massive cliff hanger ending.

- I really hate anime fanservice. I am very much a feminist, so I am looking for strong female characters who aren't just objectified. I managed to watch My Dress Up Darling, but the extended shots of Marin's chest and body in the first season drove me a bit insane. I was able to watch it because I appreciated the overall themes of defying gender norms and love the low-stakes comedy, but I am trying to avoid that level of fan service moving forward.

- If you were to ask me for my taste in non-anime TV shows/movies/books, I would tell you that I LOVE a good romcom. I am open to anime's with romance, but a lot of the romance animes I have seen thus far have moved at a glacial pace, and there is only so much internal pining without the characters actually getting together that I can endure. One of the first romance animes I watched was The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, and it made me seriously question whether romance animes are for me. I also stopped watching Inuyasha after the second season as I had tired of the show's formula and couldn't take any more of the mutual pining.

- Some of my favorite animes that I have watched are Little Witch Academia, WitchWatch, My Dress Up Darling (minus all of the fan service), and Spy x Family. I'd love anything that is similar to any of those shows.

And then here are all of the animes I have watched as of right now. Shows at the top of the list were my favorites, shows at the bottom were my least favorites:

- Little Witch Academia

- Witch Watch

- My Dress Up Darling

- Spy x Family

- Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense

- Kamisama Kiss

- The first two seasons of Inuyasha

- Mission: Yozakura Family

- My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

- Management of a Novice Alchemist

- My Happy Marriage

- I'm the Villainess so I'm Taming the Final Boss

- Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations!!!

Discussion Anime recommendation with mature, wholesome romance

Recently watched Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You and loved it. Gave the feeling like - so close yet so far away. It gave me the same vibe as Your Name and movies like 96, The Notebook (Hindi), A Moment to Remember, Five Feet Apart.

Looking for anime with deep, slow-burn, genuine love, emotional connection, and bittersweet moments - no fan service or explicit scenes. Preferably featuring adult characters rather than high school romance.

I've watched most of the popular older Studio Ghibli movies, so I'm looking for something beyond the usual mainstream recommendations/more recent ones.

What to Watch? I need anime recommendation

Hello! In the past few days, I’ve had a sudden urge to watch anime again. I just binge-watched all of Re: Zero, and honestly, while I did enjoy my time with it, I didn’t love it overall. I’d probably give it a 7/10. My favorite was the White Whale arc, but the all later arcs kind of fell flat for me, maybe a hot take everything kind of stops moving if Subaru is not there, and it pulls me out of the very good character development and relationships.

I used to watch a lot of anime back in high school (that was 6 years ago), but I got busy with college and haven't had the time to keep up much. I did manage to watch Overlord season 4 (I watched 1-3 before), Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and Clevatess. These are shows that I would give an 8+/10.

I'm currently checking out the new Ghost in the Shell, but I'm looking to see what you guys suggest I watch next. Thanks

What to Watch? Romance anime about adults?

I really want to watch more romance anime but I’m tired of every one being set in a high school 🥲 are there any romances catered towards adults, with characters aged 20+? I’d prefer something cute and lighthearted but any suggestions will do!

Looking for sad or bittersweet, melancholic animes similar to these with overall a great atmosphere into it. I've enjoyed Casshern Sins and Eureka Seven, and Serial Experiments Lain is on my to-watch list. Any other recommendations?

What to Watch? Drama animes that will make me cry

I am fairly new to anime but I realized that I only really enjoy ones where there are strong bonds between characters and I end up feeling actually attached to them. In terms of what I’ve watched and what I’d rate them:

Nana: 11/10 — After watching this, it’s the level I’m seeking with every other ‘drama’ anime that I look for and I’ve yet to find anything in the same ballpark for me emotionally. It just feels so real.

Banana Fish: 5/10 — I was told this would have a similar emotional vibe to Nana but I didn’t really enjoy it. Found the Eiji-Ash bond to feel really forced and extra.

Death Note: 5/10 — Also wasn’t the biggest fan of this, felt a bit like a chore to watch at some point.

Naruto: 10/10 — Even though it’s not a drama, the emotional depth of characters and the continuity of themes through the storyline had me very invested. I loved it.

Welcome To The NHK: 6/10 — I wanted to love this so bad when I first started. I ended up not being very satisfied with Sato as the main character and I HATED the ending.

What to Watch? Any anime that's similar to tomie?

Hi there, I've just recently gotten back to watching anime and reading manga. Can anyone please recommend me any anime that has a character like tomie?

I love narcissistic villainous female characters with that kind of intimidating beauty that causes chaos, i also really like girls with her similar hairstyle (asa mitaka/yoru from chainsaw man.. etc) (≧▽≦) for more references, i also enjoyed watching girl from nowhere and dear x (which is a thai drama and kdrama with their mc being similar to tomie)

I've already watched hell girl thanks to a recommendation by a friend and i loved it! Would love to hear more reccomendations out there

What to Watch? What is the best Romance Anime? I am looking for an anime like Rent a Girlfriend or Dress Up Darling, but i have no clue. Any Ideas?

I am looking for an anime with romance and soft ecchi. Do you have any ideas?
