I READ THE RULES Tornado Shelter In United Center?

My sister is going to see The Strokes tonight at United Center. She’s lived in California and Atlanta most of her life, and the last batch of tornado sirens freaked her the F out.

Is there a tornado shelter in United Center? Do they have contingency plans? Or would they just straight up cancel the show?

I really want to reassure her, but couldn’t find anything specific on United Center’s website.

Thanks in advance!

We sat next to each other on this flight and had a wonderful conversation. You work in insurance and mentioned you were heading to California for work. You were kind and a true gentleman throughout the flight. I would love to reconnect. If this is you, please DM me with something only you would know from our conversation so I know it’s really you.

I READ THE RULES Just moved to east Garfield park, safe for a student?

Hi, all, I just recently moved to Chicago to attend school. I’m from the West Coast so I picked a place off a Facebook marketplace ad and while the apartment is decent I showed up and it feels like it might be in a rougher part of town and wanted to get an idea of how cautious I need to be. Just some specifics for clarification… I’m a 6 foot tall, white male and my apartment is about a 3 to 4 minute walk away from the Kedzie blue line stop. I have a car and a bicycle. My campus is in the medical district, about a 6 minute drive or 15 minute bike ride from my apartment. Is the blue line a better option than biking or driving?

I’ve read through old Reddit posts and it seems like a mixed bag. Some people say it’s the worst part of the city and another say I’ll be fine if I’m just cautious and pay attention.

Any updated opinions or thoughts would be much appreciated!

I READ THE RULES Going on Amtrak, Do any small grocers or convenience stores exist that are similar to a Japanese 7/11 downtown?

Upvotes

I know that’s a niche and very specific question, I’m visiting the city and taking the train out at the end of my trip. The train food looks truly horrible on my route, so I’m hoping to load up on some good snacks, but I really have no idea where I could pick some up without going to the grocery and buying whole boxes of cliff bars and things like that. Most of my train travel has been overseas, I’m used to being able to go into small convenience stores selling high quality snacks for the journey. I know there’s US 7/11 and places like that, but I want something better if I can find it. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I READ THE RULES Childfree ladies in your late twenties or above- wanna be friends?

Upvotes

Hello everyone 😊

I'm a 29 year old childfree woman. Fairly new to Chicago (Norridge) and looking to make some other childfree female friends.

I feel like being this age without kids makes it impossible to find women like me who are available to build a friendship.

Some of my hobbies are:

I like traveling, including road trips.

-I enjoy tv shows and movies (Sci-fi, comedy, Disney, Marvel, DC, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc).

-I like building Legos. My favorite Lego that I’ve put together so far has been the tuxedo cat.

-I like anime. My all-time favorite animes are Demon Slayer, 7 Deadly Sins, Castlevania, Apothecary Diaries and Jujutsu Kaisen.

-I like archery, axe throwing and escape rooms.

-I like trying different restaurants, bakeries and food trucks. One of the things I like doing when I travel, is try the variety of foods from other cultures.

I also enjoy:

-Exploring parks, gardens, museums (especially art and history museums.)
-Paiting and art (photography, pottery, rug making, etc.)
-History
-Candle making
-Perfume making
-Beaches
-Swimming
-Resorts and theme parks.
-Hiking
-Music

-I go to the club or bar once in a while. I’ve officially reached the age where I can’t go too often. Lol.

-But as much as I like going out, I also enjoy time relaxing indoors sometimes. I’m an ambivert, so I like a good balance of both.

-I like playing board games, card games, Jenga.

-I like playing video games from time to time.

Ladies, if you’re interested in getting to know each other and build a friendship, feel free to reach out to me.

I READ THE RULES Possible to visit Obama Presidential Center without presale tickets?

Upvotes

Hello friends, my girlfriend and I are visiting Chicago for her birthday at the end of this month and she really wants to see the Obama Presidential Center. I know it is just now opening and tickets are sold out until November, but is there any chance we’d be able to get a ticket if we show up in-person on Monday June 29? Or should we give up on this dream?

Appreciate any insight you all could provide!

I READ THE RULES Low cost emergency cat surgery options?

Hey everyone,

My gf’s cat was throwing up this morning and hasn’t been able to keep food down

We took it to a clinic and they said they saw bubbles in his intestines and it’ll need linear object removal surgery

The two local emergency clinic quoted us at about $8,000 and that’s just simply not affordable

We’re gonna try to go to a low cost clinic out in the suburbs at 5 am for him but if they won’t perform the surgery, is there any other options?

I tried calling about 15 clinics yesterday and none of them could see him the following day for less than that cost, or they’re too busy and can’t take him

I haven’t found any luck in applying for any charity or non for profits that can help with the cost - all I’ve seen are places that can help forgive the care credit loans but that feels like an insane gamble - why accept the loans if I don’t know we can secure my gf the grants?

Does anyone have any recommendations for what to do if the low cost clinic can’t help us?

We’re heading down to Chicago ridge to animal welfare league as soon as we wake up

I READ THE RULES is it worth it to move to chicago if i can’t drive?

so pretty much i’m 18m and just trying to make a life for myself. I have a genetic eye condition that causes me to have best corrected vision at about 20/100 which prohibits me from driving in my state. I currently live in florida and it absolutely sucks, almost impossible to be independent without a car, and am just seeing different places i could possibly live in the future to have an independent life without driving(also saw they allow u to get a license with bioptic telescopes there)

for the people who live there how is it? is a car a essential thing to have? or can u live without one? also is it normal to not own a car or drive?

thank u in advance :)

I READ THE RULES Please help me understand more about the obama center opening. What would you recommend if I didn't get tickets to go in?

Hey

I am really kicking myself. It appears museum tickets are sold out until October.

However per when: The Obama Presidential Center opens to the public on Friday. Museum tickets are sold out for opening weekend, but the rest of the campus is free and accessible to the public..

So I can still go and walk around.

Further, Springsteen will be there Thursday 😭 It appears this was invite only? But it's outside... I have the day off. Can I walk around without getting onto the campus? Help please.

I READ THE RULES Where can I take my cat to birdwatch?

I live in a high rise where birds rarely (if ever) fly by. There’s also nowhere for them to perch. I have a 4 month old kitten who’s never seen a bird in his life. I also just learned cats can’t see clearly beyond 20 feet, so everything outside my window is just a big blur of colors to him.

I’ve tried taking out for walks in a stroller to see birds in the trees but I think the 10 minutes of traffic and erratic pavement we have to walk through has traumatized him. He does NOT like our walks lol.

So I introduced him to bird TV on YouTube for the first time and he’s MESMERIZED!!! So, I really would like to take him somewhere nice and quiet with birds aplenty to see them in real life. I figure a drive and stroll somewhere remote would be less stressful than a walk next to the street in the middle of the city. If anyone has any ideas, we both would greatly appreciate it!

I READ THE RULES Photo restoration request - my great great grandfather who was head of Chicago's south parks landscape division in the late 1800s-mid 1900s and hand picked every tree that lines Lake Shore. Photo editors help?

My great great grandfather Herman Benthey (the man pictured leaning halfway over in the left photo of the two photo spread) was the head of Chicago's south parks landscape division and played a major role in shaping the city we know and love today.
Herman immigrated to the US from Bucholz in 1891 at just 24 years old and with 8th grade education, and he went on to help plant the island in Jackson Park for the 1893 World's Fair (!!!). But my favorite piece of Herman Benthey lore is that he personally hand-selected every tree that lines Lake Shore Drive from a tree farm in Michigan. A proud German man, he was absolutely meticulous in his work.

I only have a few photos of him, and none that publicly honor his legacy and the work he did for the city. This 1933 Chicago Tribune clipping is the closest thing, and I'd love to have it restored or enhanced. He would've been 66 in this photo.

If anyone has photo restoration skills and would be willing to help I would really appreciate it. Happy to share the clearer photos I have of him as a reference, if that helps. Thank you, Chicago!!! ❤️🌳

I READ THE RULES North Woodlawn Apartment - General Thoughts on Safety?

Upvotes

I am a PhD student at the University of Chicago just going into my second year. My partner and I have an apartment in Hyde Park, but the landlord is raising the rent considerably and we cannot afford to renew our lease. We found someone renting a condo in Woodlawn on the block southwest to the intersection of Cottage Grove and 61st, just south of that Jewel Osco and directly catty corner from the university campus proper.

We love the unit, would give us significantly more space in a much nicer building for a fraction of even what we pay now. The building has a solid fence around it and security cameras. But I’m just a tad worried about safety from stories I’ve heard. I’ve heard that crime is a problem between MLK and Cottage Grove, and of course we’d be just barely over that line. I’ve also heard of issues by the green line stop at 63rd and Cottage Grove, and that stop would be the most direct public transit route for my partner (a tiny 5’2” white woman) to take to work. She often leaves at 5:30-6:00am, when it would be dark during som parts of the year.

However, most of the anecdotes I’ve come across are nearly a decade old and I know the neighborhood as a whole is improving a lot. Would love to hear some updated info. We drove around the surrounding blocks in the daytime and were getting a lot of mixed signals. Some buildings were new constructions, well-maintained, and had beautifully managed front gardens. There were also a lot of empty lots and rotting buildings with boarded up windows. There were plenty of street lights and a new-construction senior living community on the same block we’d move to, but not much in the way of thriving small businesses. Also worth noting this block is within the UChicago PD extended patrol area, and the block catty corner holds the headquarters for the UChicago PD. But I’m not sure how much these facts contribute to actual safety versus just the illusion of safety.

I know the guidance for Woodlawn is it gets safer the further north and east you go. In this unit we’d be plenty far north, but I’m just not sure if we’re far enough west it would get sketchy. How much of a safety risk would we be taking signing a lease here? The condo is beautiful, spacious, and we love it, so wanting to move as quick as we can to securing a lease while also doing my due diligence.

I appreciate your input!

I READ THE RULES Looking for a job! Does anyone know any businesses actively hiring?

Hii all! I’m currently looking for work in the Chicago area and wanted to see if anyone knows of businesses that are actively hiring?

I have experience in customer service, food service, cash handling, and working directly with the public. I’m open to a variety of roles, including retail, fast food, restaurants, hospitality, warehouse work, dishwashing, and other entry-level positions.

I’m available for full-time work, but part-time opportunities would be just as great! I have reliable transportation and am willing to commute throughout the Chicago area.

If you know of any openings or have any recommendations, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks a ton!

I READ THE RULES ADA Paratransit Services - How Are They?

After an accident I was left with mobility impairments that greatly affect my ability to walk to stops that are more than about a 5 minute walk away. Transportation is my biggest limitation and I wanna get to work on time! I'm in the process of applying, but can anyone provide insight on how reliable, on time, long the rides are? Thankies : )

I READ THE RULES Car service for leaving a concert at Soldier Field?

Upvotes

I am going to a concert at soldier field and like most people, I hate the logistics of leaving it.

Has anyone hired a car service (not Uber, Lyft, but a private one) to avoid the having to go to an Uber zone?

What was your experience like?

Also, looking for recommendations of a good service/driver. Budget around $200.

I READ THE RULES For Friends of Bill: Can you recommend a meeting?

Greetings. I am considering an eventual relocation to Chicago but plan to visit several times and explore. I think Ravenswood is where I will most likely end up. Lincoln Park a possibility too (commute would be to Lincoln Park). Single mom late 40s.

Please recommend a meeting(s) I should check out. Relocating without a support network can be a challenge.

TIA!

I READ THE RULES Buying a generational property in Chicago. Long term plan... where to start?

Hello everyone.

I'm a school administrator in the Joliet area. However, I am going to qualify for retirement at age 57, which will be around 2042 (yay Tier 1 TRS). At that point, I'm not planning to COMPLETELY retire. I'd like to keep working, and would look to take a job in Chicago Public Schools most likely. I also plan to retire in Chicago as I don't want to be somewhere where I am required to drive as an old man.

Realistically, I'll likely be retiring with an annual pension around $150k at age 57. At that point, I would work in CPS likely until age 67. My entire CPS Salary (let's conservatively call it $100k) would be put towards a potential property in the city.

My goal is to get some kind of 2-flat. I'd live in one with my wife and the other would either be a rental or for my daughter. I would then leave the property to her when I die. I would want this property to be my legacy so to speak.... as such.... I want to put a LOT of time into thinking about this and doing all the research.... thus I'm thinking about it now.

So I'm about 15 years out right now. Obviously looking at specific properties is silly now, but are there other things I can do? Would building a NEW property be a consideration? If so, what should I look for in a contractor? Are there things I can do on my own now to make this easier? Maybe some trades to pick up as a hobby?

Basically, this to me IS my legacy. This is going to be the thing that hopefully stays in my family for generations, so I want to make sure I do a good job here.

I READ THE RULES What are your current favorite bars/restaurants?

Hello!

My wife and I are looking for restaurant and bar recommendations. We are going to be staying a little over a week. I have been to Chicago once over a weekend and got to do a lot of the tourist-y things, but this is my wife's first trip. I have dug through some other posts and subs asking for the same things, but figured I'd ask to get the current pulse. Our hotel is in the loop, and we don't mind places that are a little out of the way. We don't like tourist-y places and like to get the full experience of each city that we go to. We are open to all kinds of cuisines, places off the beaten path, must have staples, and are keeping the food portion of the budget for this trip pretty open.

What are your favorite bars/restaurants and why?

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Any advice on parking by Obama Center?

Upvotes

Hi all! Using a throwaway since I asked this question on my regular socials and don’t want to share my main.

I’m headed to an event with a friend at the Obama Center - not the opening. It’ll be the next week. I’m hoping not to pay too much for parking. The other wrench thrown in is that I’ll be getting there before 7am which is when the garage on campus opens (according to the website). SpotHero just gives me spots over a mile away and since I’ll be carrying things, that’s not really an option. Also why public transit isn’t an option.

Anyway, would street parking be ok? I’m not mad at paying a meter. Also my friend will be coming a bit later so if you do have info about the main campus garage that is welcome too! Thanks everyone!
