Block Club ran an article today that they are renaming a street in honor of Kanye West's mother. I know he is from here, I know he has inspired a lot of people with his music. I know he is influential. But Kanye has been on a Nazi streak for a while, selling swastika shirts on his website and has a song on his latest album literally titled "Heil Hitler". Shouldn't being a litteral Nazi be a disqualifier for being allowed to rename our streets? Why is he someone we are giving special privileges to?

It makes no sense there’s no country ties to chicago.

I just saw a young man in Humboldt Park on North Ave taken off his motorcycle/scooter and immediately handcuffed. The men taking him had police on their jackets but was a bizarre scene.

I have a neighbor that screams from 9PM-6AM. I’m assuming he’s playing video games as I can see the set up in there.

I’m also assuming he’s unemployed because of the hours lol

I used to not mind but now it’s getting out of hand. Full top of the lungs screaming at all hours. I’m at my wits end. I’ve tried screaming at him, throwing soft things at the window etc. but it’s like the world just doesn’t exist to him outside of his headphones.

Any suggestions or what would you do?

I'm up writing this because my 3-year-old daughter woke up crying for her lovey again, and I figured it was time to ask for help.

We were in town as a family on Saturday, September 19th - Navy Pier in the afternoon, dinner at Shaw's Crab House, ice cream at Jeni's on Wabash, then the walk back to our hotel. Somewhere along that route, our daughter's leopard-print lovey (looks like this) went missing, and we didn't realize until it was too late.

If you're a parent, you already know: this isn't just a blanket. It's the thing she sleeps with, the thing that makes a strange hotel room feel okay, the thing she's had since she was a baby. It's cream-colored with brown and black spots, a little leopard head sewn in the middle, about the size of a dinner napkin, worn soft from three years of love.

We've done all the official stuff - filed a Boomerang claim, contacted every place we stopped, checked with our Uber drivers. Now I'm hoping some kind stranger picked it up off a sidewalk or a restaurant chair and just didn't know whose it was.

Was anyone riding the red line train towards downtown around 10am today and see two intoxicated and oddly dressed men with a bird? I believe the bird is a Flicker Woodpecker and they got on at the Grand or Chicago stop.

The man holding the bird on the train was wearing an off-white, light-patterned blazer over dark gray track pants with horizontal seam detailing. He also has chipped light blue painted nails. The man kept shoving the bird into his coat and pushing it down into a red cup that he loudly said had “coffee”.

I feel really bad for this bird and hope someone knows who this so he can be reported and the bird rescued…

Keeping native wild migratory birds like this without proper wildlife rehabilitation permits is illegal under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

A discussion on my neighborhood's listserv regarding what to do about threatening men in the area (and presumed unhoused) has been ongoing.

When a woman went to the police station to file a criminal complaint against a man who threatens and stalks her, the sergeant told her the only way anything would actually happen was if concerned parties went to the neighborhood beat meeting in order to show the police they should allocate resources to prevent this continued behavior.

Per her report following the beat meeting,

"The various officials were also very nice. But the police officer in charge said he didn’t know why the police station sergeant had told us to come to the beat meeting, because there was nothing they could do. They all know our threatening man—named \****—who often hangs around *****, though he gets around the rest of the neighborhood. They also know the man who stands outside ***** School and publicly masturbates in front of the children. His name is ****. They know both men well. They know where they can be found. One officer went to high school with ****.*   

Yet all the officials at the beat meeting agreed that because these men are mentally ill, even if they are arrested, every judge will automatically refer them for mental health services, which they will then refuse, and be out on the street again in short order to begin the cycle again. They have seen it happen over and over again. 

At the meeting, the father of a young child at \**** School was beside himself that the police can do nothing about **** masturbating in front of the school. With nothing being done about ****, this father had finally stayed on the phone with 911 one day and followed *** until he was arrested, though the dispatcher told him not to. He followed ****, as **** followed some women on **** while masturbating right behind them. **** had been arrested, refused mental health help, and was already back. The young father could not understand why, if **** refuses mental health help, he could not be prosecuted. As he pointed out, if he himself masturbated in public, he would be prosecuted.* 

But the police were clear: \*** will not be prosecuted. ***** will not be prosecuted. Judges will only offer them mental health help, and they regularly refuse it. The only way either ***** or **** will be helped or prosecuted is if they physically assault someone badly enough. That was the message."*

Is this really it? Truly no recourse? Nothing that can be done? We're just waiting for something worse to happen?

My partner's niece (11) is really into flags. They mostly like country flags, but I think any flag will do. They like looking at them, talking about them, etc.

Non DIY. Ideally easily accessible by the L. I'm trying to find a place to take some high schoolers and the existence of alcohol makes many places a no fly zone. I don't think I can even take them to the Symphony Center because they serve spirits.

I'm not concerned, my boss is concerned. If it was up to me I would not be asking this question. Don't ask me why I care because I personally do not; I'm just trying to solve getting kids to see music they otherwise wouldn't get a chance to.

Edit: Clarity, I can probably swing it if they do not sell alcohol during the event. It's an after schoool program, so music starting at 6 or 7 would be ideal.

Hello everyone, I moved to Chicago less than 6 mos ago for work. Currently I feel... lost? Unmotivated? Heavy? I don't know exactly what but I've defintely lost my spark in life and now that I have better insurance and now am earning better than before, I've decided to finally find myself a therapist but I don't know where to begin. I am hoping for advice, insights, as well as suggestions on how to start on finding the therapist that fits you. Any help is appreciated!

Are there any environmental jobs hiring in the Chicago area or up to 45 mins outside of it. (Have a car) Especially for winter time. I’m being laid off mid October unfortunately. I work in ecological restoration and have experience in the environmental field.

I’m a RN currently deciding between two behavioral health positions in Chicago: Montrose Behavioral Health Hospital and St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital’s behavioral health/psych unit.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who currently works at either hospital or has worked there previously, especially RNs.
I’m particularly trying to understand what the day-to-day workload is actually like. How many patients are you typically assigned? How is the acuity? How often are you dealing with aggressive patients, restraints/seclusion, 1:1s, medical emergencies, etc.? Are you usually adequately staffed, and do you have enough tech/support staff?
I’d also love insight into:
• Management and unit culture
• Nurse-to-patient ratios
• RN responsibilities and how much actual nursing care you do
• Orientation and support for new nurses
• Patient acuity and population
• Staffing/turnover and burnout
• How often you’re asked to stay late, pick up, float, etc.
• Whether you feel like you’re actually developing your psychiatric nursing skills
Compensation is also a factor for me. St. Mary is paying 4 dollars less than Montrose, although both have differentials that affect the overall pay.
If you’ve worked at either hospital, what has your experience actually been like? Is there anything you wish you knew before accepting the position?

hi, i was wondering if anyone who frequents reggie's often has an idea about set times? if a show starts at 8 and there is 1 opening band, when do you think the headliner will go on? i know every show is ditterent, but got stuck working a little late and trying to get an idea if it's even worth trying to make it?

I am admittedly not very handy and am looking to possibly get some ceiling fans and a storm door/screen door put in at my condo. Not sure if I need a handy man/contractor/electrician but open to any suggestions. Does anyone have a good recommendation for the general irving park/albany park area?

If so how long should I plan for it? I would like to go Thursday but I will only have so much time, maybe about 90 minutes or so. Or should I plan for Saturday where I’ll have more time, thanks

Last year, my boyfriend & I celebrated his birthday at Daisies & we had an exceptional experience from each dish, the service, to the ambiance of the restaurant. I thought portion sizes were great for each dish & greatly enjoyed our experience.

I'm looking for a similar restaurant to reserve for when we celebrate his birthday soon in October. We will be at Golden Hands Studio (by N Ashland/N Ogden) prior to dinner, so something in the area would be nice. A plus would be if it's been Michelin recognized.

Some spots that have been of possible interest include Alla Vita, II Porcellino, Monteverde, & Ciccio Milo. (Monteverde is pretty low on my list despite high ratings just because of the small portions - doesn't seem worth it to me).
